For the stock phone its android 2.3.3 withe sense 2.1 upgradeable to android 2.3.5 with sense 3.0 officially without unlocked bootloader. And yes, it will receive android 4 update but with sense 3.6
If you s- off your order phone or unlock with HTCDev you can load up pretty much any thing you want.

Gingerbread 2.3.3 with sense 2.1. Not sure if it ships with it but it can be updated to 2.3.5 with sense 3.0. Ice cream sandwich is expected this month with sense 3.6

Lucky if you get a desire S with sense 2.1.
First thing out of box, revolutionize it.
If you are buying a new phone, would recommend you too check one v. Almost same specs but newer model hence will receive more updates in the future

How do I get the latest version of Sense or upgrade the version I have?
Hope the microwave thing is a joke?!!! I'm really learning about these things so don't really know how to upgrade to the latest Android and Sense. If I only have Android 2.3 or thereabouts, how can I upgrade HTC Sense so that I can then upgrade my Android?
start from reading the manuals in the forum
if you want to stay on the official versions by htc, you dont need to do nothing.
your phone is up to date, and if update will be available your phone will tell you
I had ics running on my desire s worked fine apart from camera

Yes, because you didn't need htcdev and with revolutionary s-off you can do almost everything inside this forum, the only thing i would recommend is to change the revolutionary bootloader to a eng bootloader, check the index if you don't know how, it will keep you from problems you could face.

Is this correct? Thought it came with 2.3.4? Also, why can't I video chat with googletalk?

its version 2.3.3
Is this correct?
Yes
Thought it came with 2.3.4?
No 2.3.3
Also, why can't I video chat with googletalk?
Because thats a feature only availble in 2.3.4.
HTC will hopefully update it to 2.3.4 in due course. The only phones I know of having 2.3.4 are the Nexus One and Nexus S, but anyone can correct me if I'm wrong

Officially, you're probably right, but pretty much any phone running an up-to-date custom ROM will have 2.3.4, such as my HTC Desire running the CyanogenMod 7.1 nightlies.
Thankyou everyone. Is qik a good way to video chat?

Apparently the SGS2 is getting 2.3.4 reasonably soon, which will hopefully spur HTC into updating themselves.

Why would you put a stock DESIRE HD ROM on an INSPIRE just to hope that HTC will think you have a DHD and give you the update for the DHD? Well they won't anyways. You do realize a stock DHD ROM is not 100% compatable with the Inspire? They do have slight hardware differences.
Gene Poole has a rooted version of the new DHD ROM with adjusted drivers for the Inspire in the Development section. If that is what you want in the end then just install it. Here is the link.

Only problem with that is, other users, like myself, have gotten a bootloop after installation. It will boot, but will constantly loop on the "HTC - quietly brilliant" screen. Last I checked, there was no solution as of yet. If Gene Pool can figure out what is causing it and correct it, I will most likely try flashing it again.

If you really want to run this stock base, I would go into fshami's Sens 3.0i thread and ask Wild Child if you could test his soon to be released stock version of this base. It has all the S's- smooth, stable, speedy, solid..... I'm sure he wouldn't mind another good tester.

Is there a chance for an official update for the Desire S to the ICS ?
Nobody knows, but could be possible...
At this moment no available information about from ths update but in my oppinion its coming about 2-3Q of year.
i've read that htc wants upgrade desire's series. HD,Z and S but in second semester of this year. i'm not sure how much is a credible information..
If HTC is ever going to release official ICS for Desire S then it is for certain that you will have to wait a long time.
Don't hold your breath.. HTC has not been very fast publishing updates, at least not for the Desire series... Q3 is probably overly optimistic (IF there will ever be an official update).

Because the leaked ICS ROM is for the Sensation, which is a qHD device.
It's best to wait for a leak of the XL which had the same screen as us

For many reasons..
Even though most of us will be using custom ROMs, we want official bases to work from so we have the right kernel source, drivers etc. This way you have better comparability, battery life, performance etc.
Think HD2. No official WP7.
Unofficial WP7 built with no official drivers = permanent bugs. (Multitouch, camera flash)
I explain this EVERYTIME, when someone posts this....

I'm not sure it will happen. HTC only announces large screen and high resolution phones now. And as we all know, they don't like to upgrade old phones. So if there will be an ICS phone with 480x800, it won't be soon.

Trying to get to the 10 post count in a hurry, are we?
Just manually checked my wife's HTC software update, and it finally has the Android 4.0 ICS Sense 3.6, I d/l'd it, but havent installed it yet. Is there any reason I shouldn't update, say if I decided to root it anytime in the future?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
It will be best to root before update.because it will be a whole lot easier with the hboot version you have now. You should be able now to use revolutionary and if you update, It's likely you will no
longer able to use it depending on your hboot. Revolutionary supports certain hboot versions and some ics might not be supported. This is my understanding and I was also told the same thing. So I rooted on revolutionary then updated to 4.0.3 and custom Rom .of course its possible to root after update, just more difficult in my opinion. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Hope this helped out a bit.

Let her use both devices and make the decision. My wife is still running stock GB on hers and sees no reason to change it. Don't push her and be held responsible for any changes she does not like.
There are certain apps that you'll have bugs and compatibility issues with on ICS, but most of those should be ironed out by the developers over time.
Definitely s-off before hand either way. That way you'll have the ability to easily downgrade if she doesn't like it...

Finally HTC One X getting Android 4.2 + Sense 5 update in Europe . huraaa!!!!
Not long after the HTC One X+ started getting its Android 4.2 update in parts of Asia, HTC Europe has followed suit with an update for the original NVIDIA Tegra 3-powered One X. Reports from the XDA forums show that the update to version 4.18.401.2 weighs in at a little under 380 MB, and includes Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and the new HTC Sense 5 UI. As such, the update also adds many features from the HTC One, including the BlinkFeed home screen experience, the new Gallery and Camera apps, and automatic video highlights.
It's worth underscoring that this update is for the European HTC One X (codename Endeavor), not the AT&T One X, known internationally as the One XL (codename Evita). So far there are reports that the update is hitting Nordic countries and parts of Eastern Europe first, including Slovakia and Denmark; other European countries should be getting the OTA in the hours and days ahead.
HTC insider @LlabTooFeR tweets that the European HTC One X+ should also be getting a similar OTA, to software version 2.18.401.2, however we've yet to see any signs that that update is rolling out.
