New TBolt User Here - Thunderbolt General

I may be a little late to the party, but I just picked up a used Thunderbolt as a replacement for my cracked Stratosphere (I knew I should've gotten the insurance!). However, I don't think I've downgraded. Actually, with the specs and openness of the device I've come up in the world a bit. It'll be good to be able to have some good old fashioned custom ROMs again. Well, I have to wait until Monday first.
First off I'm new to HTC devices and Sense. I'm going to have my first taste with a Sense 3.0 or 3.5 ROM. Does anyone know any really good ones? Also I did the research on CM7 and I know there are unofficial builds so if someone could point me to a stable one I'd love it.
Anyway, glad to join the team and I'll try to stick around when I get an upgrade in November by developing. Of course I need to get a decent computer before that.

The only cm7 currently in development is thunder shed. It's my dd. I feel the best 3.5 rom is eternity. And imoseyons kernels are the only way to fly.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll try to give them all a spin. I have one new question now. The micro SIM in my Strat won't work in the TBolt. If I go into my local corporate VZW store can I get a full sized SIM for free?

You can buy an adapter or get one from VZW for free. When they swapped phones for you, they should have changed the sim.. Just let them know

Well they haven't switched the SIM because I bought my device off of Swappa. I find an adapter to be unreliable and I've heard they can jam in the slot. I'll probably be down in a store tomorrow so will they be able to give me a full sized SIM for free?

Im sure if the phone checks out fine, they should... Let us know

Went to my local B&M store and it turns out it cost me ten bucks to activate the new SIM. Not sure if it that's correct but it's information nonetheless.

Woah! Love this phone.

After dropping my first captivate in a river early this year, I finally got a new one a couple weeks ago.
I must say things have changed a lot around here, after reading for a few days I am finally caught back up on everything I missed
Awesome job guys, thanks for all the hard work you guys have put into keeping this phone current and awesome. I can't see myself upgrading for a while

lol. A lot of people thought I was crazy because I didn't want to wait a month for the atrix to come out.
Then another month for roms to come out.
So far I love my captivate.
ICS alpha 6
has anyone taken a look at the alpha available on pirate bay? i wanna know how to install it and if its legit. I can't post it cause i'm a new poster
There are already a lot of ICS threads on here. I believe the A6 ROM was posted on the "ICS ported to i897" thread in the development section.

I would never go there for roms.
I am running A6 as we speak which I got from these forums.
Camera doesn't work (for video or pictures)
SU doesn't work (haven't toyed with workaround yet)
3g (I am trying work arounds now, doesn't work by default)
Still a really impressive interface to play around with, and I think I can live with the cons for a little while until a more stable rom gets hosted. I will say I am in love with this os though.
The interface alone is so modern and fresh feeling I can't entirely explain it.
kjdoug............THIS is the only site you need to mod your captivate. forget any torrent site when it comes to the OS on your phone.
BTW welcome to the forum! READ lots, you will learn, also there are a lot of top notch guys on here that will help you out.

I noticed. I'm watching the dev thread, with excitement.
Waiting for more of the bugs to be worked out before I flash it. I use my phone for work so it has to be almost 100% stable
It just fits nicely in my hand and my pocket, All the new SGS2s all seem to large. IMHO

and ICS beta1 works mighty fine, i might add!
So does CM team's Build 3....
Yes I would recommend the CM9 version (or working towards it) if you want to try out ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
The 3g works without any manipulations, almost everything works as a matter of fact. Calendar sync did need some .apk switched in to get calendar working in beta2 but at least for me in beta3 I didn't have to redo anything. All my apps from tibu work and download correctly. It just seems to be very smooth.
PS. I also upgraded to the ATT SGS2 and love it but I also have my cappy as backup and love messing with all the roms for it still. Basically testing it all out. Plus I am pleasantly surprised that the cappy got ICS before the SGS2.

yahh I'm on the Beta 1 dev version, I feel it is smoother, there is no need for scripts anymore, everything works without doing extra flashes(besides kernel and superuser). I get much better battery life out of this one too! The one from DemonWav's thread.

Giving up on the sidekick

I hate to say it but through the past year I've seen this thread explode then burn fizzle and slowly die.
There hasn't been any "new" development for this phone since mid year and it doesn't look like we will ever get gingerbread or any real interest in this phone from any hardcore developers. T-Mobile failed in ressurecting the sidekick imho it started off good but it quickly became a novelty and they just brushed it under the carpet. Even going so far as to not do exchanges on devices with known problems.
I love the sidekick line for the design of the phone and the full keyboard and basic reliability of the design. For those who don't know the company who designed and built the original sidekick phones "Sharp" came out with a new phone on at&t that looks similar to the older sidekick designs. Its also touch screen and has android. I havnt really looked at the specs on it tho. Just know it exists.
For now ill use this phone till it falls apart only because I can't afford a new one and T-Mobile has me by the balls on contract :-/ untill there's some kind of breakthrough with this phone I think I'm done posting on here till I get my next android device.
Id like to thank those who deserve it for helping me and the community
Ay0teddy, sduvik, xmeatizmurderx and even revolution for his efforts in trying to keep things going.

The sidekick was my first android phone an I am sad that more devs haven't seen this phone as the new G1 but at the same time i'm happy with the devs we have that are trying to learn new things an make better roms for our phones. I myself am also on contract with tmobile so it will be a while before i can upgrade my sidekick for another phone (maybe a galaxy note even if it means no 3g or 4g) Currently for stability i've been using a spare xperia x10 mini pro (loaded with miniCMpro an phone cost me $125 after shipping) an its a breath of fresh air not having the phone reboot at random or fcing in the background without showing whats going wrong though i do miss having least 2g speeds (running on edge on this phone) but I do hope one day the devs we have or a new one finds a way to bring our phone from being a unloved child to being a phone to be desired
hey
yea i got rid of my sidekick 4g i have a galaxy s device now and im loveing it the way i did was called tmobile and demanded that i speak to the loyalty department and demanded a new phone because of the issues or i was leaving and they basically gave me a 600 dollar phone for 99.99 dollars 50 rebate and theirs a lot of dev going on for this phone that i got now you can take the warranty route and exchange your device three times than get another device free its called warranty exchange and since its a 4g phone you have the option of getting another 4g phone but they choose it for u its overnight shipping so you basically HAVE to have insurrance in order for it to be 5 bucks with each exchange or otherwise you pay 20 bucks for each exchange without insurrance if it all works out go to gazelle.com and sell your sidekick they gave me 80 for it
Bye. Can't say I care.

Hey, at least he/she thanked the devs... it might have taken a page and a half to get there, with a review of opinions everyone has already said and/or read.
I must admit though, I do feel that the earth stopped rotating for a moment upon this announcement. hehehe
i kid-i kid
While development and upgrades to Gingerbread may be non-existant (for now), the users on this community have brought out the best in my phone. I had the same outlook as you did soon after buying this phone and seeing that there wasn't a) A gingerbread update already available (seeing as how the phone was released in March and I got mine last month), and b) It didn't look like Gingerbread or ICS weren't going to be available anytime in the near future. Even with Fryo this phone still has a lot to offer. Revolution's ICS Domination ROM gave my phone new life and a new modem brought my down/up speeds up exponentialy.
I have hope that eventually we will see a Gingerbread update (or even ICS) since this phones specs aren't too differnt from that of the Nexus S. But if not, I'm still glad I chose to get a Sidekick one last time.
I'm giving up too we just gotta wait the devs got our bacl!

Once again I look on xda and find a small amount of dev work being done I'm glad people still are holding on to this device. It makes me happy. I came back after this post for a brief time because of new roms but wound up going back to an older rom after difficulties. I know most of you left here are new to this device but I wanted to let everyone know once again I'm leaving my sk4g. I will be moving to the HTC Amaze 4g forums one of my good friends got a new rezound and let me have her amaze for free ^_^ once I root it I will be switching my daily driver to that. I hope to see this phone someday get the respect it should have from the inital release. Thank you to all devs who prooved that this phone wasn't just a little toy for text addicted teens and actually could have been brought to greatness if it weren't for t-mobile dropping support. Also if we ever get gingerbread, ice cream sandwich or jellybean to run on the sk4g would someone please pm me and let me know I would love to see it ^_^ untill then goodbye all and once again a big thanx to all the devs who keep this section of xda from going into the inactive threads pile with all other discontinued phones ^_^

No problem. I myself have switched DD's, but still support this phone highly. Regardless, I wish you the best of luck. The SGSII is an amazing phone, and I hope the Amaze4G is just as well. If you're finally done with the SK4G, you could look into sending it do bhundven as he is a recognized developer as such I'm sure he can do wonderful things and teach us things we never knew. After he's done creating and testing and he gets his own (soon) he will send it back. Please get in contact with him.
If I at any point decide to leave the SK4G (which isn't in my immediate future but who knows) I will send it to the developer who DOES NOT have one or is not capable of getting one -- to keep.

TLS, that was very nice to ask that! If azcledel feels that he does not want to "give up" his sk4g, but instead loan it to me for 2 weeks, I would be happy to pay shipping to and from me.
The device would be returned in the same condition as I received it.

I would gladly if you were to pay shipping (I'm a broke ass college student with no job) haha. You ARE a recognized developer. I trust you.
PM me on here if you're up for it. I'm going to be at college nearly all day so I won't be able to even send it at least until tomorrow. (My day off).
I will concider sending it once I get access to a pc to root my amaze but I'm not sure I want to give it up yet the amaze is a dual core running a fresh stock ics 4.0.3 with sense 3.6 it all depends on what I can do to it and how I like it. I don't like not having a full querty keyboard but the touch screen issues and lack of ram on the sk4g is why I am concidering switching in the first place also the "free" part helped a lot lol I'm broke myself and cant afford to upgrade. Who knows I may switch back to the sk4g and sell the amaze idk yet but will definetly keep it in mind.

Woah! Don't sell the Amaze 4G, it's..well...amazing! But yeah, just because it's 4.0.3 doesn't mean anything. You can find stable builds of 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 with Sense UI removed -- (if you want it that way) I got my GS II and like, 3 days later 4.0.4 officially came out with a newer radio too. But yeah, I understand the feeling of not wanting to consider dropping the SK4G in anyway (after all, it was and is my first Android smartphone and the first for which I've maintained a ROM for...) regardless, I'll admit to only buying the phone for 2 reasons...I was a teenager when the Sidekick was BOOMING around middle school and high school, and the price was so damn budget I had to get it.
Well so far I'm digging the amaze still hate not having a 5 row physical keyboard but the dev teams seem pretty informed we have ppl working on porting cyanogen mod 10 and jellybean. Right now I'm running a Rom with 4.0.3 had one running 4.0.4 but had problems sending/RECEIVING mms so I SWITCHED back. What's the point of comparing QWERTY Sidekick with a typical touchphone?.. There are over 9000 of them, many with JB.

ICS from HTC later this year

according to facebook page
says for desire HD which is very similar to inspire right?
Yes it is. I'm sure once it's out for the Desire HD, all the devs that use that base (like Android Revolution HD) will be working on getting it to the Inspire. All we can do is wait.
The problem ATT took the inspire from there inventory so no ics for us...

S-OFF will solve all your worries. The Desire HD was a high-end phone for HTC, they won't abandon it for at least 2 years. The last version of ICS is probably where updates will end, or it might get a single update that will get it to Android 5.0. Any more is unreasonable.
I keep hearing that AT&T took it out of inventory, but when did that actually happen? I bought my inspire only 2 weeks ago, and while it was from a RadioShack, as a former employee I don't remember there stock ever being that far behind
Considering they just had a sale on the inspire I think they still have them

Any HTC ICS phone is needed.... We need Sence for ICS and that can be taken from any HTC phone.
just recently saw a bunch of ATT ads for buying the inspire or the infuse for 1 penny. Id love ics from htc, not because its worth a damn from them but because of what the devs here can do with that.
Making it seem like they pulled it from the inventory is probably just some marketing scheme. They make it seem like this phone is no longer available after the public wants it and them BAM! buy it for valentines day in the red color and for cheap too. If I was a person wanting a phone I'd jump on that. Its just a big game they are playing. And personally I don't care if ATT sends the update out or not. Thats why I came to this site. To get the most out of my phone and that means I can update it and not have to worry or wait for ATT lol cause we all know they aren't the fastest person in the race.

exactly. and as far as ICS goes, by the time it actually comes out we wont care anymore. same with GB by the time it was released we were way past that.
I personally DGAF about the HTC roms. They are always bloaty and generally slow. I try to use open sourced roms because I dislike proprietary software. Updates are few and far between, etc. sure sense looks good, but I'd rather go for the Android look anyway

Can we please beat this into our heads, because I'm getting frustrated having to scream this from high heaven to get anyone to listen.
HTC releasing an official ICS ROM for our phone is incredibly important because the kernel source and files will make running any ROM on our phones for ICS that much easier, it doesn't matter whether it's a Sense or AOSP ROM. All the bugs and glitches in any ICS ROM will be mostly fixed by kernel source and drivers.

Your right once the Source for the official version is posted all the issues with ICS right now will be gone. The kernel source will fix the camera issues and most of the other issues present in ICS roms that we all see right now. Take the camera. The Video recording bug will most likely not be fixed until the source is released from HTC. Then you will see most if not all roms move over to ICS

yup. This is the only reason I'm gunning for the official release also. My phone runs so much smoother without HTC sense. So does my fathers captivate without touchwiz. But we definitely need those essential functions such as proper camera.

The more probable explanation is that the phone is getting to end-of-life and they're looking to blow out inventory to lock in customers and hit their unit volume contractual commitment with HTC.
That's great news! It will not take long for the developers to mod that for the inspire.

good reason to get in financial position to buy phones outright and then not ever be locked into phone contracts (if only being out of x-yr contract would get a discounted rate)

Yeah, there's some wisdom to that. I used to do it that way myself for years with a Kaiser and HD2, but since I'm going to be needing a data plan anyway, and don't see a reason to switch from AT&T, I figure for my purposes it's hard to conjure a compelling reason to spend $500 or more on a phone if the carrier will subsidize me for what I was going to do anyway. :screwy:

Ugh. No kidding. I'm stuck with AT&T right now, and hate it. Even with the grandfathered data plan, they'll throttle you down to nearly dialup speeds if you use too much data within a billing cycle. If it weren't for the contact and having to pay that exorbitant freaking termination fee, I would've already told AT&T to piss up a rope and switched to Sprint.

If you were going to sell your phone which rom would you chose?

I'm selling my inspire 4g i'm going to get a galaxy nexus, i was using Icecold sandwich 7.0 from the desire hd, but the camcorder doesnt work and the keyboard freezes quite a few times, i cant sell my phone like that, would rom woul you flash on the inspire if you were going to sell it, i want something as stock as possible and with great battery life, one of the reasons im selling my inspire is because of the battery life i was getting , 7 hours at most! that's outrageous
Right now my only choice is android revolution but it has sense 3.0 which sucks, i wanted a 3.5 rom but most of them have been themed, 3.5 was never released officialy for the inspire or at leats the desire hd?

If you are selling it i would put it back on stock. This way you know everything works and wont have them calling you back to complain. Or you can wait to get the ICS update that is coming soon. (a few months maybe)

The thing is I forgot which one was the stock rom, I don't wanna pit something that old either, I just found out sense 3.5 wasn't officially released for the inspire 4g, what about the desire HD?

No only the DHD got an official 3.0 update.
CM7 or rooted stock
If it were me, I'd sell it with CM7 loaded on there - alternately you can find a rooted stock ROM - here on XDA, iirc. CM7 will offer them more flexibility, but the rooted stock will keep internet passthrough as an option. (Only thing I desperately miss on CM7)
I would never recommend anything other then a stock ROM to an outside party, unless its explicitly stated they want a rooted Inspire. All ROMs have bugs and its nearly impossible to know (unless you're familiar with the party you're selling to) what bugs they can and cannot live with. If the OP wants to sell to an unknown 3rd party, its just good policy to get it back to stock and let them root the phone and do what they want.

Also unless i knew the person, i wouldnt trust a rooted phone from someone else. No idea what kind of data loggers they have on there or message forwarders, call recorders etc etc. ya its just bad policy to sell modified phones unless requested to do so.

I've sold two phones with CM7 on them and the people I sold them to had never owned a rooted phone. One of them was coming from an iPhone he had dropped in the sink - both of them were extremely satisfied with CM7 as the ROM. One of them has since gotten a new phone on contract and rooted it himself; the iPhone guy has since sworn off ever owning an apple phone again and still has the rooted inspire.
Give the people what they want, when they wants it, and they wants it all the time... (even if they don't know that's what they want at first.)

Yeah but 2 people out of the entire phone population doesn't sound like it speaks for the majority. When it comes down to it, a 3rd party buyer who is looking at the phone has the same expectation as if it were new i.e. stock ROM on it. If the buyer asks for it rooted obviously its a different story. Not everyone wants a rooted phone, it just seems that way since XDA is all about getting more out of your phone, but the general phone user typically has no idea about rooting, ROMs and the like. Too each their own though, sell the phone whatever way you want, I would just rather sell it stock and not have to deal with non sense that may occur after the fact if something goes screwy.

Not only that but hopefully that way they cant crate a new account just to make new replies for the same stupid a** questions.
Itll never get old on xda. hahaha.
I would recommend CM7 because it is simple and to the point but still offers alot of flexibility. Although the average user might like a Sense ROM more because of the Facebook integration and such.

I really don't see how it matters one way or the other. If you take it back to stock, you will most likely get more interested buyers. If you advertise it as rooted, you will attract those buyers that are looking for a rooted phone. There are alot of peeps that want a rooted phone, just so they can do simple stuff like remove bloat, yet are afraid to do it themselves, so you might be able to get a lil more for it rooted. Either way, I doubt you would want to provide your own personal warranty.

How long will the Infuse live?

Well, the Infuse is now 2 years old. How long will people develop for it? Does anyone plan on keeping their infuse for a while?

if you need to be on the tech cutting edge, it would be considered old.
Otherwise, it is still a fast single core device, 4.5" amoled screen and takes great pics and vids

Which is why I sent mine back to Samsung for repairs! I love the camera!!!:cyclops:
I plan on getting a nexus 4 soon, but I will be keeping my infuse as a tag out phone. I imagine people will develop for it as long as there are new things to bring to the table. Here's hoping we can get some key lime when it finally drops

Maybe the bugs in JB should be worked out first.

Bought mine used for $50 and plan to keep it till it craps out or I trash it(if it wasn't for the ballistic case I already would have) if that happens i'll look for another one most likely.
Well, as more and more people move on from the infuse, I'm just wondering if it's worth the developers time and effort to keep coming out with new roms. I imagine that within a year or so, there won't be a lot of infuse users left. But hey, if it floats your boat, keep working on it for the next 10 years. I myself will be moving on next February when my contract is up. It's been a fun ride, but time to get a quad core behemoth like the Note 2. Or maybe even the new Samsung Mega (6.5" screen). If it's available in the US.

That's true, but we should also be thankful we got JB on a device that didn't even officially get 2.3.7 lol

No doubt we should be thankful. But it took GB a long time to be completely stable, (REVENANT rom is awesome) and that's why I'm only recently jumping on board the Gingerbread Express. Stability/100% usability are my only criteria. If JB had that, I'd be all over it like flies on excrement.
It seems like for a lot of people, installing new roms is like changing their underwear. Which is cool if you're into it. And actually, I know what it's like to install something new every other day being a linux user. I've tried every distro under the sun in the past. New features are cool, but at some point you have to ask yourself what do I do on my phone that a new rom will make better? In reality, it's probably not much. I need my phone to work, and work perfectly, that's all.
Computers are another thing. At least on my computer I can install Virtualbox and try things out before I go for the BIG INSTALL. But hey it's all good. If you can live with imperfections with new roms, go for it.

That sums up the beauty of android. To each their own, everyone likes something different. As long as I don't have major bugs, I want to run the latest and greatest. Some are like you describe yourself, all about stability. Either way, its all right here to get. I hope the infuse stays alive for a long time, and I'm sure the talented devs we have can iron out most if not all the bugs
