[Q] ROOTING without USB ??? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Not sure if I have a bad SGS4G usb port or just cable issues - I have read a number of posts that folks have gone through three or four cables before finding one this handset likes. it definitely does not like anything at the moment.
I'm just mainly trying to get rooted for use of Titanium. Is there a way to do without tethering to a PC? I can pull the sd and put whatever I need on there or use WIFI which is working swell.
thx for advice

You might be able to use z4root to root the phone. But other than that, you will need USB. As far as cables go, the stock cable works fine for me. If it's your USB port that is the issue, you can get that repaired by a third party, but if you're not rooted yet, you might as well send it in to Samsung if you're still under warranty.

will this work?
any idea if these steps work on SGS4G?
http://android.modaco.com/topic/331706-root-without-usb/
or, if I can get Z4root to 'root' the handset, is that all I need to get Titanium going? does Z4root include busybox?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Try that.

This has been asked before and the short answer is no. No usb equals no root with this device. By all means try these other suggestions and if you are successful please let us know.

thank you hech! I so appreciate the short and definitive answer.

This needs attention

Look, this is probably a little bit against the rules, (linking to the Q&A forum from here) but this issue needs some serious attention from Galaxy-S Gurus:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863745
Multiple users are now having a serious problem connecting to their Galaxy-S Captivate in download mode. No string of drivers, updates, or anything else is solving the problem.
Why does this need your attention? Because if we can't get our phones connected in download mode, the risk of bricking your phone while flashing is FATAL, not something you can simply ODIN your way out of.
Please help. And please don't delete/move this thread until we clear this up.
Can you clarify what tasks you're performing that are giving you problems? Using Odin can unbrick a software bricked phone if you boot with it and the phone in download mode. It may help if you were more explicit about what you were doing and the steps you were taking.
Edit: sorry, didn't see the link you posted. Can you list all the options you've attempted and the steps you took? It might reveal something you may be missing.

Simple driver problems... reading the odin thread would have gotten him fixed up right away.
I downloaded the driver that dg is talking about in the Odin thread. Not the one from Samsung site and have never had any issue and I flash my phone like its a drug.

Please refrain from responses like this in the future. I know you'd like to have a simple answer and think that I'm some n00b, but there's more to it than just a driver issue.
I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled every driver there is. Samsung Kies, Samsung New PC Studio, Samsung USB Drivers -- Hell, I even started downloading drivers for the Samsung MOMENT and any other phone that anyone listed having the same problem with. I downloaded the driver package with the uninstaller that you're supposed to run before you reinstall. I've uninstalled, rebooted, edited registry values, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted, and still can't get the PC to recognize the phone in download mode. USB Mass Storage, Kies Mode, Debug mode all work fine. Not download mode.
I've been working on this for 36 hours. Trust me, it's not a simple driver problem.
I even tried running USBDeview and it doesn't even list the device as plugged in when it's connected in download mode. Windows tells me "A USB device connected to this computer has malfunctioned."

I'm thrilled that you think you have it all figured out, but I think you need to actually look at the Q&A thread before providing such terse replies.
It's not a simple driver issue. I can't even jam the driver up Device Manager's ass.
It sees a download-mode phone as a malfunctioning USB device. Get it? Is there another way to say that I've downloaded 700+MB worth of Samsung apps and drivers since 5PM EST on 12/13?
DesignGears was just trying to help. He was just pointing out that there are different usb drivers in the ODIN post besides the ones from Samsung. DesignGears is a senior member of this site and also a rom developer. He may have helped you out further (considering he's is an expert at this) but probably not anymore, good luck.
I've been here for two days. It's tough to go two days on this forum without seeing his name. I'm somewhat aware of his credentials. That really doesn't change the fact that he gave me the first, simplest answer which came to mind without even reading the thread that I linked. In a fairly dismissive fashion.
I mean, right in my first post I mentioned that no updates or drivers seemed to be solving the problem. Shouldn't that intrigue the expert just enough to have him actually read the Q&A thread about the problem?
If not, I plainly don't want his help. Someone less dismissive with just as much knowledge will come along. This board is teeming with helpful minds; something else I've learned in my two days here.
i read that entire thread and it seems only 3 people have this issue, and 2 of them stop posting.. so.. it looks like its just you.
not to sound like a broken record but it sounds like a driver issue, borrow another phone if possible and see if it works in your comp, a lot of the fixes are posted in the previous thread that you linked already.
edit: im pretty sure this belongs in Q&A anyway as its not a major issue
Hard to imagine why the OP hasn't gotten any help...
Your usb port doesn't supply enough power. Use a diff port or use another comp

And it is the right answer.
All you need to do is pay attention.
Your phone goes into download mode just fine. The problem is that your computer is not reading/recognizing the device correctly. This is a driver issue. The drivers you need are not readily available by simply browsing the Samsung site. You can find them in the Dev forum.
I understand you are frustrated because you did something to your phone that you were unprepared for. Do not snap at the people who are trying to help.

Refresh your USB Driver stack maybe?
Move your USB cable to the back of the computer, right off the MB.

When I first started to use ODIN I had this same issue, then I moved the USB to the back and it worked. I also made sure I had all the ancillary software loaded on my PC too.
I believe in the looong Q&A thread, someone already suggested moving the usb cable to a different usb port.
My only suggestion: Do a master Windows cleanup and reboot of your computer...or try using someone else's computer.
eliminate more variables, improve your logic, stop banging head, change way of life
I hate to reply to this yardsale, but:
The logic would probably be:
Stop banging head, create another relevant test scenario.., or:
assumptions: phone seems to be in download mode. problem may be at other end of cable, device manager seems to be functional, test another device manager, is it ok? try another USB port?
In any case, moving to another machine probably would have fixed it. You didn't seem to eliminate many variables in your process.
You certainly may have eliminated an intervention from God as a possibility.. fortunately humans are very compassionate.. they seem to have stepped in for you, despite yourself...

[Q] Help with Bali + Voodoo LagFix

I have never modified a phone before, I've never needed to, but the lag issues with the SK 4G are bugging the bejeezes out of me and you all seem to really know what you're doing.
I've spent a good amount of time wandering these forums and found the threads :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128657
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189151
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100513
I'm slightly tech inclined, and I understand that I need to do something with rooting. But overall, I have no clue how to access what I need to, or how to flash, or what else is needed. I also am not sure how to find out what type my phone is (KG2, KD1, etc) as that seems important.
Is there an elaborative guide somewhere that can more specifically tell/show me how to modify my phone with these alterations?
Thanks very much for your time!
I will try and help ya out if you like... I sent you a private message on here. good luck, you will get it. basically you probably want to start by downloading the Samsung drivers for your computer, and the SuperOneClick root from the thread in the development section.
For anyone who checks this out, yogi2010 was wonderfully helpful and between his support and my mad typing skills we made a guide. Check the forum for it! (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275116)

I have a usb-uart with buspirate guide I've been working on for a little while.
I will post it soon. I was hoping to take a few more pictures... but I'll just have to add them later.
What phone/device do you have? That will help answer the movinand question.
This should have been asked in a Q&A forum.
It is the microsoft kin twom.I'm hoping one of these devices will be able to pull off some info as far as the bootloader and or system files. The phone is very locked down and running out of ideas for how to get into it.Can a mod move this too the right forum?Let me know when you get your project up,cause i definitley want to check it out.

I get that irritable sensation that you're being lazy, as it seem you haven't bothered to search the forum at all. Answers to all your questions can be answered by searching... Here is your phone specs. Although they don't mention what Tegra processor you have...
Here is your Google search string:
Code:
[URL="https://encrypted.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=UART+site%3Aforum.xda-developers.com&oq=UART+site%3Aforum.xda-developers.com&gs_l=serp.3...69372.77789.0.78005.14.14.0.0.0.1.141.1164.13j1.14.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.SIkcCldMwac"]UART site:forum.xda-developers.com[/URL]
And YES this is QA post.
And YES you should change the title of your post!
(Or you gonna piss-off a whole bunch of people looking for "unbrickable" mod...)
Wow...Lazy? Really? lol.Believe me,i have been searching/reading the xda forums for awhile relating to usb to serial/nvflash/movinand chips/uart/bus pirate and everything that has to do with it.I know the complete specs of the phone and as far as which model tegra processor,it doesnt matter at the moment. The things i asked are that what couldnt be found from the hours i searched on xda developers and google by itself.Believe me i have searched.A random search link on xda about uart doesnt tell me much more than what i already know.
I asked if there were schematic for adam outler's design since it seems to work better than the others i have seen on here and other forums.I cant ask him directly since im sure he has a life too instead of going through tons of messages. The other things i asked couldnt be found on here or from a google search....so i thought this would be the place to ask.bhundven seems like the one that will help me out though.
Well you know best. But I always recommend the much easier to use FTDI USB serial cables/modules. However, the BusPirate is more versatile as it supports many more protocols and even JTAG to an extremely limited extent.
You need to figure out what voltage levels you need for that device. Usually with serial over USB, you need 3.3V, while for direct on-PCB UARTs you probably need 1.8V. But since you have your Tegra proc specs, that is no problem right?

OTG & boot from external micro usb

Dear XDA,
I am a new user, so if this post is in the wrong place, sorry.
I am planning to make a custom case for my ville. My plan is to mod a very small usb hub into it. So i can plug in usb cables and stuff. Also i wanna buy a very fast mirco sd card. The hub wil be inserted in the mirco usb port. I wanted to ask if it is possible to boot from such an external micro sd card, outside the one s. If it is possible do i need to root it? Has anyone tried something failiar before? And am i able to charge my phone through the usb hub?
Tanks in advance,
pro-one1000.
I'd say that this is more suited to development or accessories, but I'm sure a moderator won't mind.
Android is based on Linux, so there is no reason why it can''t be possible. It would probably be quite difficult, but definitely do-able.

I do no work with programming (I'm taking a crash course in computing in the summer to get a bit of help) so I am probably one of the last people that you should ask to be honest mate. If you repost this (not that a senior member would ever recommend that...) on General or Android Development then you may get a bit more attention from people who know what you are doing.

access storage on phone with cracked display

Hey Guys
My Nexus 5 screen is smashed, it was still usable until today but now the display is blurred and is unresponsive to touch.
How can I access my storage?
USB debugging was on, so when I plug my phone in to my PC, nothing shows up.
I replaced the ADB driver with MTP USB Device driver on my PC, now when I plug it in, it does show Nexus 5 in My computer but theres no files/folders inside it when I open it up.
Would be grateful for any advice

There are many threads discussing this issue, they are everywhere here, they are in almost every device forum and the steps to do what you want to do are similar for all devices, there is more than one way to do it. Serch and you will find them.

Best not to say anything at all if you've got nothing helpful to say mate.
All you had to do was nudge me in the right direction.
This forum is becoming seriously toxic.

I said that there are threads everywhere about this here, take your pick, they are so plentiful that I don't know how you haven't already found them, no need to point a direction when it's everywhere around you. If we were standing in the middle of the woods and you asked me which way is the forest, is there a place I could point? Or is it all around us no matter where we look. I can't help that my reply made no sense to you.

Heres a tip for the future:
If these threads are everywhere then suggest one or two search terms for the op to look up.
The op has obviously had a look and thats why he's mentioning that he's tried replacing the driver to allow MTP access. So thats one of the many "more than one way to do it", now suggest another, doesn't have to be step by step, just enough to give somebody an idea to flesh out their search strings.
You can't help that your post made no sense, but I can help you make better sense of your future posts.

I go a little further than just trying to answer, I try to give them enough to make them think their way through finding their answer so that they understand first hand how to find it and the what/why of what they found. I can be cryptic sometimes but it's to get their gears turning. I do this because I've discovered over time that just supplying their answer, in the end, really doesn't do as much good as it could, they solve their problem but they don't get anything else out of it.
I suggest doing a Google search for:
"How to backup data on android with broken screen"
This will give more results because it will draw from more sources than just here at XDA, there's a ton of this stuff out there, you could almost virtually trip over it if one were to just look. That's why I gave no specific links.

Let the op be the judge of that.
Sometimes, thats all people want/need. I appreciate this is a hobby for you, It may not be enough for you, but if the response is enough to "solve their problem", believe me that is huge for the vast majority of people asking questions.
For the vast majority of people, a phone is just a necessity to get through life and messing with it is not their hobby. If they have a problem with their phone, they need it sorting as soon as possible with as little collateral as possible, so they can get back to their necessities or maybe even hobbies that they really enjoy. Its their perrogative.
That is why if you judge xda as a community, the vast majority of members on here have less than 50 posts. They solve their problem, their mission is complete, and then they go (this is probably true for every forum). I also fall into this category. That doesn't mean to say that sometimes I do not want more - this just isn't a craft that arouses that in me. I am a member of many forums where I have thousands of posts, and thats because I fit into the category of wanting to "get something else out of it" as you describe it. Thats my perrogative.
If we read carefully to the post written by the OP, we'll get to see if they just want to solve their problem, of if they want a little bit more. Our response should be tailored towards that. Sometimes, because of our prejudice, we decide for the op what they should want.
Also, Thanks for your help
Regards
Mubs
