hello,
i searched for half a day now and havent found any answers to my problem. i guess this may have been posted somewhere else before, so pls excuse me for asking.
i have an unbranded sensation xe from uk and i got the ota ics update 2 days ago.
i rooted it before the update with revolutionary. for the update is searched a little bit cause it did no work the first time, because of the custom recovery(i think- pls excuse me if thats not all correct, but i am a bit of a noob in theses things) so i reverted to stock bootloader and recovery and did the update.
i saw that not all was running good as it should-maybe because i did the update over my existing GB stock rom without any wiping.
so i thought i could install a custom ics rom intead of the stock(what i could have done month before, without waiting)
as i realized that root apps did not find any root permissions i thought there could be something wrong.
after my reserch today i found that i have
locked stock hboot 1.27.0000
s-off
stock recovery.
i am not able to flash any custom recoveries and gain root access in any apps.
i tried to root it again and get all the stuff needed to install a custom rom, but unfortunately revolutionary does not work with hboot 1.27.0000. and all my attempts to get a custom recovery (adb, flashable zip, rom manager) failed.
adb says access denied
hboot flash says: wheater nothing (does not flash the .zip at all or does nothing after flashing) or wrond device id. i checked my cid (its HTC_001), which is in the text file.
rom manager has no root rights.
whats going on? please help me. i cant find anything more to get that working.
Sounds like you are flashing a PG58IMG recovery. What exactly does it say when it fails? You'll need the recovery to flash superuser in order to give root permissions to apps...
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
thx for the very quick reply
thats exactly what i tried to do in boot screen.
with the adb commant it was just the image but that did not work in any way.
with the PG58IMG.zip file it says nothing without showing any boot with power button after flashing or it says failed because of different device id
exactly it says:
Model ID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Press Power to reboot.
i still have SU installed from before the update and it gives SU permissions to Titanium Backup for the automated backup. but when i open the app it denies the SU rights.
i thougt the S-Off means that i am rooted? is that right?
S-off doesn't mean you are rooted.
Open the PG58IMG file. inside you will find android-info. Edit this file with your MID (model id) then it should work.
If you don't know your mid, dowload terminal emulator from market and give this command: getprop ro.mid
Once you have custom recovery, you can download and install the su binary from here
Install also superuser and busybox from market.
Hope it helped.

One question for you. Why didn't you install the recovery that comes with Revolutionary ?! It's also ClockworkMod and you could easily root your phone through a flash zip. Why make things complicated ?
L.E: If it S-OFFed your phone, it has gotten root permissions, so I can't see any problems on installing CWM.
Check this out.
I've not tried it yet, but it should be the solution to your problem.
thanks for the help i m sure downgrading will help but i have tried a few guides and none of them work... has anyone has another one up their sleeve?

Did you try also the guide I suggested? Just to know.
of course i did... but for me the revolutionary does not install cwm, gets stuck on downloading...
Mmh.. I understand.
There is an issue which is not so clear to me in that procedure. The guide says you get temporary root access, and in that very moment you should launch revolutionary, but the set of commands I can see in the "code section", don't convince me enough. Something tells me that performing all those commands, especially the latest ones, the temporary root access is going to be closed. Maybe the revolutionary software should be launched before issuing the latest two commands. Maybe this is the reason why you are not able to install CWM.
Of course, this is true if, and only if, I did understand the guide correctly.

I see what you're saying but it does work.
Basically running the fre3vo tool enables you to get TEMP root access on your device which you can then use when running the revolutionary tool.
Now that you're S-OFF you should be able to follow the instructions below in order to install RECOVERY, I'd recommend EXT4 (which is based on CWM)
install-instructions:
download zip package you want
put it on the root of your sdcard
rename it to PG88IMG.zip
reboot your phone in bootloader
go into hboot
hboot will check your sdcard for the PG88IMG.zip and ask if you want to flash update
confirm flahing
reboot your phone
rename the PG88IMG.zip back to something else cause if you are in bootloader, hboot will try to flash that file every time when it is named PG88IMG.zip
Let me know what happens....
cheers guzs thanks a lot for zour help! i ave run the fre3vo & revolutionary method a couple of more times and after 3 times it somehow worked! downloading mz first rom through rom manager now! cant wait to experience the real android world with out htc limitations!
ben_pyett: thank you for your explanation. I'm not so expert on Recovery programs; I'll follow your advice.
BTW: I see you have 0.98.2000 hboot. Since I've never seen that, I guess it is different from 0.98.0002 and it is not a typing error. Isn't it?

To be honest i'm no expert either.
The boot loader that I have is the ENG (engineering) one and does have this version number.

I am trying to launch revolutionary on my linux box, but every time I try to do it, it says:
Code:
bash: ./revolutionary: Permission denied
It has execution permission (777) and the phone is connected and has the TEMP root access. So, this "revolutionary" software doesn't work to me.

did you type "sudo ./revolutionary" ?
do you have the phone set with USB debugging on?
See HERE for further help from Revolutionary documentation
Thank you for replying.
Yes, I used sudo (I didn't doing with sudo before!), I have debugging mode ON and I've already checked the help documentation. The problem now is that the program suddenly quits and it is due to some missing dependency, actually, if I try to execute revolutionary on a Debian Linux 64bit (into a virtual machine), it runs properly.
As I've already written here, it would be useful to know what are the dependencies required by revolutionary so that I can install them on my Gentoo too.

Did you achieve S-OFF and manage to install CWM through the Debian VM method?
If you didn't why don't you try running it from a Bootable Ubuntu CD/DVD as described in the this thread Search for "How To: S-Off your device with Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool"
No I didn't S-OFFed my device yet. I want to do on my Gentoo Linux. I'm studying how to check what are the dependencies needed by revolutionary. I was trying ldd, but no lucky with that.
I only saw that on a Debian x86_64 virtual machine revolutionary works.

Thanks for that. I bought my Desire S a few days ago and it says in the bootloader that it is S-OFF already. So I didn't do any adjustments myself so far. I tried what you suggested but without success. When I go into hBoot it scans for the file, then briefly shows "parsing...[PG88MG.zip]" and that's pretty much it. Nothing else happens.

It's strange that it is already S-OFF.
Anyway, I have a doubt about the hboot version. I don't remember now the exact version number, but it's not 0.92.2000. My previous one was: 0.92.0002, when the device still was S-ON. What about it?

please reply asap..
If you followed this guide try flashing "su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip" again. On my Sensation it worked after 3rd try ;-)

"Failed to get root"
I read somewhere that it happens because of applying the OTA update.. So my question is, If I flash RUU over it and then try again, would it work ?
Follow the steps in the guide you were following s-off with Revolutionary, it make take 5 tries and say it fails but eventually it works, keep looking to see when it says s off. Then put the CWM Recovery zip on your sd card and Super user zip from the guide. Then flash the PMG58IMG zip which is your Recovery, delete the PMG58IMG file from your sd card, then boot into recovery and choose the option for flashing a zip from sd card, navigate to the SU signed zip, it will fail 3 or more times just keep installing it and your done.
Is HTC sync installed/uninstalled? Have you uninstalled any other apps that may attempt to sync when you attach the device?

Yes it is because of the OTA update, u need to downgrade ur firmware in order to get root on ur sensation. I m also using HTC sensation(India) with the same H.Boot version and cant root as getting the same error "failed to root" untill u downgrade ur firmware.

then do Revolutionary S-off...
Install 4ext recovery

How to root Sensation XE with official ICS OTA Update?
I have tried to follow the guide for hboot / clockwork / root and CID but it won't let me install clockwork!! It states there is a modelid mismatch - i am using the same clockwork files as i did before
Went from
1.17 hBoot with s-off
CWM 5.0.2.0 (stock for OTA upgrade)
1.73.401.4 rooted rom
To
1.27.0000 hBoot with s-off
Stock (wont let me flash CWM)
3.32.401.105 with SU and busy box but No root access
Anybody able to shed some light on this please?
Which SU package did you use?
I haven't used a SU package yet, they need CWM or 4EXT to flash don't they?
I have the SU and busy box package still on the system from the old rom. That is they were both up to date before the OTA upgrade
I am guessing i have to get a custom recovery then reflash a SU package to get full root back, but i can't get it to flash the recovery. I have now tried CWM 5.0.0.8, 5.0.2.0 CWM Touch 5.... and the 4EXT Touch recovery using PG58IMG.zip method and every time it says modelid mismatch. All the recoveries are for Sensation and the CWM classic ones are the same files i used on my phone with GB
Ok so i think i have figured it out, to install the recovery using PG58IMG.zip method, do i need to change the modelid in the zip?
My modelid is: PG5813001 (XE) and the flash is for: PG5813000 - just changing the modelid would work would it not?
Also, does anybody have the stock recovery for ICS...so i can reflash it after using custom recovery to install SU??

Assuming you didn't do it already: SuperCID using the guide you mentioned and rename ClockworkMod to PG58IMG. I have had the same problem and SuperCID solved it for me. And it's easier as well, as you don't have to add your CID to every item you want to flash. About the root issue: Another issue I had as well. It seems it is really hard at best to root a stock ICS. I migrated to a pre rooted custom firmware to solve it. Android Revolution in my case. Like it better than stock anyway. And with SebastianFM's kernel, the multi touch issue is addressed as well.
same here, I have exactly the same problem
stock recovery after ICS OTA update won't allow me to flash CWM i already tried using all other PG58IMG zip.
I'm still searching other threads that may help though, should you find one buzz me please...

By renaming Clockwork to PG58IMG I mean that the bootloader itself can flash Clockwork when it's renamed. When starting at the bootloader screen the file will be scanned and you will either get an error (for example Model ID incorrect when your Carrier ID doesn't correspond) or you will be asked whether you want to install or not. In your case, you should be fine. As far as I know it's the only way outside of Android to install a recovery tool.
And about installing Android Revolution: Just check the ARHD thread in Android Development. It contains everything you need to know and various links to additional requirements.

Another thing: The ARDH thread will mention root access, but I noticed that it only seems to be required for some of the mentioned backup tools that operate from within Android and thus obviously require root access to function. But Android Revolution itself and the other stuff that need to be flashed from outside of Android do not require root access in my own experience. With me, it works just fine. One final standard warning: Proceed at your own risk.
Hello xda users.
I want to root my sensation, and therefor i need to get it from android 4.0.3 to 2.3 so it can be possible for me to do.
My HTC
HTC Sensation Z710e
Android 4.0.3
Sense 3.6
Softwarenumber 3.32.401.5
Here is the thing, ive looked around for hours on filefactory.com
put i cant seem to find a file that can put my sensation back to stock rom, so i can start root it. Could any of you be kind and help an noob out here?
Are you S-ON?
Yes S-on ..
you can root your ICS with S-On
Go to htcDev and unloock your phone
flash in a new recovery using "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" using the recovery.img file extracted from PG58IMG.zip
then using cwr flash the updatede SU
Boom! your root
using htcdev unlock whill wipe all your programs and settings AND void your waranty. and u might brick your phone
AND FYI u cant downgrade your Hboot if u are S-ON and the new 1.27 is imposible at this time to get s-off
i will go do that asap ..
Thank you for your quick answers ..
Best regards

Use CWM (Clockwork Mod) to flash the SU package - if you don't know how to do that then don't even try
i do know what that is, its just my english isnt that well.
i went to htcDev, and unlocked my sensation.
then i got rom manager on android market and tried Flash Cwr but im stuck at here..

ROM Manager needs root to function, and since you don't have root yet you'll have to flash the recovery through fastboot. Then you can install Superuser through your recovery.
But wait, you want to downgrade to Gingerbread? You won't be able to do that since your device will still be S-ON, and Gingerbread won't boot on HBOOT 1.27 (necessarily for ICS).
So the thing Maydayind said about
"you can root your ICS with S-On"
What did he mean with it ?

I think he needs to push clockwork mod recovery via ADB then flash su. After that he can go from there.

In the first post there's a section talking about getting your computer setup to ADB. Follow those instructions. Once ADB is set up type in su. Then type ADB devices. This should give you your serial number this is exactly what you want to see it shows that ADB is setup.
Now skip to the section towards the bottom of the post with a line break and the word fastboot ( it's like two paragraphs or so from the bottom). Follow the instructions to get superuser installed. Once superuser is installed start your phone and launch Play. Install ROM Manager. Launch ROM manager and grant superuser permissions when it asks for them. Tap on the install clockwork mod recovery tab. It will let you know if it installed successfully, you are home free. You get to play with the big kids now
