Try to reduce background noise as much as possible.
Hold the phone a few inches from your mouth.
Enunciate each word as much as possible and don't speak too fast.

Vlingo is pretty good, but the in-car feature drains the battery fast. Overall though it does voice recognition really well.

Feel the vibration? Hear the noise? God forbid you actually turn it on????
In all seriousness, there is an app called noled for Samsung phones that uses a part of the screen for the "led." Thing is they have AMOLED screens so turning on a few pixels is perfectly acceptable and doesn't kill your battery.

Question about messaging

Does anyone have any insight as to why the stock messaging app would have me download just a regular text message? Doesn't happen every time but enough to get on your nerves.

Never had that happen unless it was a mms (picture)

One thing that did come to mind is it seems to happen when someone sends me a text from an iPhone. Could it be that the Android knows it's superior and rejects the text from the inferior iPhone?

Check with them if they are using iMessage or something like that. I remember hearing about a texting app on iPhones that uses data and allows iPhone users to text for free.

I use Project Linda tones. It's sort of like GLaDOS from Portal.

I salvaged the files from when I had it installed on my vibrant and keep using them.
I use whatever cool sounding couple second blips I hear from songs. The one I currently have is a tiny snippet from the beginning of the bit trip runner game song "impetus"

Otherwise I've used the star trek communicator sound, and some notification sounds from Sony handsets...Sony includes some great message tones with their phones.

The one I use
I use the 'wok wok' sound of a car alarm! Fun!
I use the "Road Runner" Meep meep
I have an audio clip from the movie 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'. The clip can be found on youtube with the key words: Jay's FXXk Rap
