Thanks for a really nice forum! - HTC Desire S

The time has finally come. My HTC One X is in my hot little hands, and the wife has hijacked my DS. Time I was moving on.
Thank you all for the last 13 months here. I've actually felt a strong sense of remorse about leaving the DS forums behind, which hasn't happened on previous upgrades. It has been a pleasure.
I'll pop back to answer questions on my subscribed threads, and of course i will be continuing support on the CoreDroid ROM thread.
Cheers guys.

Crap... Lost a good one there. We're crumbling fast here... But I guess its only a matter it time before we all change our devices. Maybe I ought to take a look at this one x hoopla myself...?

Ohh i looked at it alright, couldn't take my eyes off the screen. It's great but costs like 35k. I'm probably here for another year or so, so i seriously hope we don't lose devs over this.....

We have it here in Greece for about 3 weeks now.
Official release will be at 15th of April or so however many resselers have it right now.Probably these are independent imports.
The price starts from 626 to 699 euros.
I will try to blackmail a provider to get it for free or at very low price.

We want a detailed review!!!
Coming from a long standing user of Android, HTC, Sense and the DS, your review will definitely be more informative and genuine than the ones floating around everywhere...
So we're waiting for a lowdown on the One X from you.
P.S. : Make it an embarrassingly long one!!

35K flat rate? Or is there bargaining room...? With papers and warranty i presume?

Some shops say 37k, so i assume 35k after bargaining rate...... Even if i were to get a new phone (highly unlikely) then i would go for the smaller One S. 4.7 inches is too big for me.

I thought HTC was only launching the X and V in India, not the S... maybe i'm wrong... haven't been able to keep up with development due to real world work... But no half way (4 in) measures this time. I'll either keep the 3.7 incher DS or get the 4.7 in monster!!!

Don't worry, he said he will have one up soon
I knew this would happen. It happens to every forum during upgrade time, and you see the forum shrink
Det66, and LBC also got a One X....

Thanks guys. Yes I'll give it a week or so to get a good idea of it, then do one of my mega reviews! I'll post it here. There is an ota update due so i also want to wait on that before i comment on battery life! ;-)
Early impressions are very good. Once you get used to the size (my DS already seems like a baby) it's screen just blows you away. No matter how hard i squint closely at the screen, i can't make out a single pixel! It's like the screen is painted on. Obviously you notice it's power getting it set up. Flies through menus and homescreens.

OK I said I would put my [MEGA] review here when I was finished with it. Had the phone for a couple of weeks, so will be posting this on Amazon pretty soon....
My first venture in to the world of Android and HTC was with HTC's flagship device of 2010: The HTC Desire. When it came to upgrade that, going with the next flagship (the Sensation) didn't seem worth-while. I didn't like the larger size, and wasn't convinced the dual core CPU was going to be utilised properly and provide any real advantage. Instead I chose to go with the successor to the Desire, the Desire S and I never regretted it for a minute. A fantastic device despite it's minor flaws.
Time marched on, and it came time to look at the next upgrade. The logical choice for me was the HTC One S. Still a large phone, I loved the aluminium uni-body construction also used in the Desire S. However, HTC (as well as other manufacturers of late) have made the curious design choice of removing the SD card slot. I was disappointed to learn that my planned upgrade device had been hobbled with a mere 16GB internal memory. I knew this wasn't enough for me. I wasn't convinced with the offer of free Dropbox space to appease me either. The extra data allowance I'd need on my contract to use this cloud storage regularly would amount to an extra £210 over 24 months. Plus my carrier's 3G isn't fantastically reliable. Who wants to wait an hour, draining their (non-replaceable) battery for their album to download before they can listen to it?
This forced me to look at the One X, a phone I wrote off initially when I learned of it's dimensions and OTT processing power. Being as the X is only £50 more than the S, it made more sense to me than paying to increase my data allowance. Still not being convinced of the need for a dual core phone (I don't do much gaming on my phone) I was definitely sceptical about all this quad-core business, but hey, I needed 32GB storage and that was that.
So now that you know where I am coming from and after having this phone for a few weeks now, here are my findings.
Note: At the time of writing this I am on firmware release 1.26.401.2 which has the following bugs:
Sense occasionally reloads after exiting an app.
nVidia Power Management put in the wrong part of the ROM by HTC. (Epic Fail HTC)
HTC Agenda Widget causes Sense to reload if scrolled.
OTA updates are expected to fix these soon.
Build Quality.
I decided to break from the norm and go for the white model. The first thing that struck me upon removing from the box for the first time (not surprisingly) was the size. I actually LOL'd. To this day I still think it is a bit too uncomfortable to hold compared to my Desire S, but after a couple of days I got used to it. It is much lighter than it would appear to be, but I suppose this is because I'm used to an aluminium phone, not a polycarbonate one. I find that one handed operation is not quite possible in all circumstances, the most irksome one being the power button. Yes it's where all the others have been, on the top-right edge of the phone. However using one hand I can no longer reach this whilst maintaining a reliable grip on the phone. A two-handed on/off is required. Fitting a case makes it slightly easier to grip, but of course adds more bulk and detracts from the gorgeous aesthetics. I can't help but feel they could have taken a leaf out of Nokia's book, and put it on the side where it's easily reached by the thumb.
Whilst waiting for it to full charge before turning on for the first time (following HTC recommendations as I didn't want to risk damaging a battery you can't replace) I gave it a good look over. All is in line with HTC usual build quality. Some have reported a gap between the top of the screen and the body, but doesn't seem to be a problem on mine. The volume keys however, do not have much tactile feedback when pressed as they have been set flush to the edge of the phone. Possibly to reduce accidental pressing, but only a small gripe there.
The protruding camera lens is a concern. Lying flat, the glass of the camera lens will be in direct contact with the surface it's on. Even some cases don't help here, as the cut-out for the camera lens still lets the lens poke through. At the time of writing this (as is common with a new release) there are no Case-Mate cases available for this phone. I am having to be very careful about putting it down.
Despite all this, I was impressed with the look, feel and weight of the phone. And then I got the green 'Fully Charged' light and I turned it on....
Holy cow. Now this is how you do a screen. I cannot make out a single rough edge or pixel. It is pin sharp. Colours are represented well and it is a joy to look at. I am so glad I did not go with the One S and it's pentile screen. Performance in strong daylight is still not perfect, but at least at full brightness it does much much better than my Desire S did. After a couple of days, my wife (now the proud owner of my Desire S) asked me for assistance with some settings. After two days of looking at the One X, the Desire S screen was like looking at rough, grainy tiny little toy by comparison!
Operation.
Needless to say the CPU power on offer here makes navigating around the phone's menus and apps slicker than a buttered weasel. There is just no waiting, even for a second, for commands to be carried out. No stutter scrolling through lists or panning across full web pages. I tried one of those games optimised for Tegra chip-sets just to see for myself what the phone was capable of. Pinball HD ran without a single stutter or hiccup and looked fantastic.
I am also liking HTC's refined and slimmed down Sense 4.0. I was never a fan of the Sense 3.5 fancy animations. They were cool at first, but quickly became annoying. The home screen carousel effect was just a pointless effect that frequently had me rolling my eyes. I was worried that more CPU power would encourage more fancy fluff. Thankfully HTC appear to have listened to their critics and gone the other way. A lot of the needless animations are gone, scrolling wallpaper is back (thank you), and Sense has returned to being a pretty yet functional UI. It improves on areas of the stock Android 4.0 but doesn't completely smother it. Of course if Sense is not your thing then there are a wide selection of alternative launchers for you to download from the Market, but I have not tried those so I wont go into that here.
HTC were keen to promote the improvements made to the camera on this device, and I can confirm that for the first time since my Sony Ericsson k800i, I have a fantastic camera on my phone! It is not quite good enough yet to get me to forget about my dedicated compact digital camera (we'll need to see the return of xenon flash for that IMO) but this the best camera phone you can get today. Shots in strong light are all but indistinguishable from my compact camera. Shots in low light are vastly better than my Desire S, with much less noise and correction required. I used to regularly have to open up photos in PicSay Pro (a nice photo editing app) on my Desire S and correct the exposure and saturation of low light shots, but I have yet to open that app on my One X. I may not need it at all, as HTC have for the first time included native photo editing that can now do more than just crop and rotate. Despite HTC having added 5 levels of LED flash intensity, I still find that if the flash goes off it still makes photos look a little bleached. It could have done with something like Sony's 'Flash Mode' on the White Balance settings, which amps up the reds to counteract the bleaching effect of the flash. But so far I have left the flash set to 'off' and have yet to be disappointed with low light shots. HDR mode is very good at helping here.
I was a big fan of Swype keyboard. The stock HTC one takes up too much screen space on this phone in my opinion, plus their trace keyboard is still not a match for Swype's. Too many corrections required. However Swype worked well when one thumb could comfortably reach across the screen. I find the far corners of the keyboard too uncomfortable to reach on the One X. To that end I have accepted two handed typing is a must on this phone, so have made the switch to Swiftkey which works very well.
Beats Audio. Gimmick. HTC saw fit to not include official Beats headphones in the box, so it is merely a Bass Boost button that has been around since Walkmans of the eighties. OK if you are listening to bassy music, but make the switch to something else and it sounds terrible. I quickly turned Beats off and returned to my much loved music app PowerAmp. This has a very comprehensive EQ that lets you tune the sound to your liking, and to suit your choice of headphones. To this end the sound I can get from my One X is very good. I also like that it goes slightly louder than my Desire S, which I always found to be a bit too quiet. I can't comment on the quality of included headphones as I've only used my a-Jays.
Battery Life & no SD Card.
Two major concerns of mine were the sealed battery and no SD card slot. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking I wouldn't have mined the phone being slightly thicker and heavier to be able to change the battery and swap SD cards. Also was the concern that with over 4 times the processing clout of my Desire S, with a much larger screen, and only slightly larger battery capacity that battery life would be sacrificed. Relax. So far the battery life is shaping up to be exactly on par with previous HTC phones. Not better, but not worse either. Don't judge the battery life in the first two weeks. You'll only get 6 hours out of the first charge, but 10 hours out of the second charge. 12 hours out of the third charge. After a week I was getting 18 hours which as a heavy user is all I'd expect. Now that I am two weeks in I am getting 24 hours with regular use. Playing HD games of course brings this right down, but that's what you would expect if you want to have this much power at your finger tips.
There is a shade over 25GB available of space on the virtual SD card. I can live with that. The One S has only 11GB out of the 16GB which would definitely be insufficient for my needs. I just have to be a little bit more brutal about which albums I have on my phone, and keep on top of transferring large files like video and backups to my home network. I wont let this phone get as cluttered as my last one! I am not suffering for the loss of 32GB storage capacity.
Conclusion.
I am relieved that my major worries about this phone have turned out to be acceptable. I am very happy with it. Others may find the early bugs unacceptable for HTC to have allowed to be released, but I am a member of XDA. Bugs are there to be conquered!
I have gotten used to the size, and the screen means that any other phone I look at (including the iPhone) causes me to scoff! I can never go back to anything less than 720p now! Anything else just looks rough next to the One X.
If you wait until HTC release an OTA update to squash these silly faults or you'd be happy accepting them to fix yourself using the help of XDA, then it is in my opinion, the best phone I've ever had.

Wow, that's really long. Thanks very much for that.

Galaxy S3 or One S ?

I've been searching everywhere for a comparison thread or video or anything between the T-Mobile One S and Galaxy S3 . I right now have the One S and I am torn between this and the S3, so simple question, what phone do you think is better and why? T-mobile One S or T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 ( we pretty much know the specs)
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
As always, this is a question of tastes, likes and dislikes.
Looking only at the specs, the S3 is better.
But looking at practicability I think the One S is better.
If you don't care for the money go for the S3.
The benefits of the one s over the s3 are better price, better haptic due to the smaller screen and better touch due to the aluminium body.
On the other side the s3 comes with bigger battery, sd card support, better screen (hd), better cpu and probably the bigger fanbase in the future... Therefore more developers.
I don't use touchwiz or sense so this wouldnt matter for me.
Gesendet von meinem HTC One S mit Tapatalk 2
this is what ive been wondering. i have till the 18th to return my htc one s if i dont like it (since i get 30 days to return it here in california). ive had reboots, signal going in and out which has been driving me nuts and wifi calling dropping calls for no reason when i have full wifi signal. also i think the gs3 looks like crap to me and cheap and the htc one s looks way better, but the GS3 does have better features (IMO) then the htc one s.
Galaxy S3:
Bigger screen
HD screen
Expandable micro sd card
Bigger battery and also can be replaced
More ram 1gb vs 2gb which might not even matter
I think the cpu and gpu is the same as the htc one s
NFC
HTC One S:
Much better design and sexier
Camera software is better (i think it is)
Htc sense 4.0 (which i think is much better then touchwiz)
I figure for the money im better off with the gs3 since i paid 250 plus taxes for my one s. but i will see.
Firstly the GS 3 does NOT have a better processor, just because it is "quad" does not mean that it is better
The S/XL/X AT&T/Evo 4G LTE uses the latest snapdragon chip, the S4 dual core krait. Have a look at the benchmarks comparing the GS 3 and the HTC One S and the HTC One X (Snapdragon S4)
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9300_galaxy_s_iii-review-761p5.php
Unless you are looking at the version that the USA is getting in which case the GS 3 will then have the s4 as well.
Also just because the GS 3 has a bigger battery does not mean that it is also going to be better
Many factors affect battery life:
- screen size/type/res.
- driver/software optimization for battery
- the hardware that is used especially the CPU
etc.
So due to the bigger screen/higher res, the bigger battery is needed.
From what I have seen (from people who know what to post for screenshots regarding battery life and the required info. ) and heard from a friend (who owns the GS 3), the battery life does not sound that good, seems very average and only slightly better than the X.
Also just look at the atrix, it had a big battery, yet its battery life was terrible.
However, due to the s4 being very power efficient, the battery life could be a fair bit better than the exynos quad gs3,
version.
At least you will be able to get an extended battery though
The GS 3 only has 1GB of RAM as well (USA version has 2GB). There really is no need for any more RAM.
The GPU in the GS 3 is better (the GPU in the GS3 USA version is the same as the HTC one s [adreno 225])
So to sum up, if you want a bigger/better screen, more storage for dropbox, internal and the choice of using an SD card, NFC, better 1080P video recording (camera/photos seems good, but not a huge difference from what I can see and the HTC one/Sense V4 has a lot more features and some of them are great along with a better UI IMO) and a larger developing community go for the GS 3.
Although play with the GS 3 first and see what you think of touchwiz as I personally don't like it one bit, hate the colour scheme, modded apps and feels like a big step down from sense V4 overall IMO. Although touchwiz is tweaked very well under the bonnet.
Also you may find the GS 3 to be too big.
I think the OP is talking about the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 which will have dual core not a quad. Sure it all comes down to preference, would you like to have "TAMPERED" written to your bootloader and documented by the same company that is supposed to honor your warranty ? How bout a VGA front camera ? Maybe the atrocious cut out for the ****ty front camera? How bout poorly designed antennae that struggle to get a signal inside a building ? What about a non expandable 16gb memory device of which only about 10 is free ?
Touchwiz and Sense both hog resources, but TW is much, much lighter. The One S restarts Sense every chance it gets, and has a serious multitasking problem.

Not an issue for a lot of people as some are happy with the stock ROM in its current state and see no reason to root and flash a custom ROM yet as the 1S is super fast and smooth out of the box with great battery life and features.
Also is that not only if you use their method via their website for unlocking or whatever it is?

That was taken with some light coming in through the window (however, it is very cloudy outside, so it would be much better when we have blue skies)
The "atrocious cut out" There is nothing wrong with it IMO.
On the other hand the notification LED is atrocious and probably the cheapest/tackiest way that HTC implemented it.
At least the entire design and looks of the S is far better than the white & pebble blue GS 3, which looks like a cheap fisher price toy IMO......
Might be built very well and durable (not as durable as the GS 2 by the looks of things though) but there is no denying that in terms of "perceived quality" the HTC handsets especially the S due to the aluminium unibody/MAO process are still leagues ahead of Samsung.

I have had my device since release day and have had no problems with the signal whatsoever no matter where I am, just took these SS when in a shopping centre in the car park level (bottom level out of three levels) and this is my signal with a H connection, which usually results in a weaker voice reception as opposed to a G/E connection:

Not an issue for some people otherwise we wouldn't have even laid eyes on the device just like the others....
Unless you plan on throwing your entire music collection (can use google music as well instead) on to your device along with films etc. then there won't be any problem with storage.
Over 500 photos including lots of 1080P recordings, along with emulator files, wallpapers etc. over 60 apps installed (including games) and I still have plenty of storage.

I have only had 2 reloads of the sense launcher when I was just using pure stock and it was only after returning from a game whilst using the browser as well. I have disabled a lot of sense widgets/apps etc. and use apex launcher, ics browser +, snowstorm weather widget, smooth calendar, APW calendar 4x4 widget, switch pro, and tasks free widget, swiftkey beta 3 and I have no problems with the multi-tasking, or any reloads whatsoever now.
And for the people who are experiencing the "serious" problems with the multi-tasking I am sure HTC will eventually release an update tweaking it or they could just root the mobile and install this app and then set the multi-tasking to what you want:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0
I have had the GS 2 (on stock ICS) right beside my 1S (complete stock sense) and the 1S was noticeably quicker and smoother in every area that I tried be it browsing, games, loading apps/menus, carrying tasks out etc.
The GS 3 seems to have just as many problems as well, seems to be some wifi problems, screen problems amongst other problems and I am sure as time goes on and more and more people get their GS 3 will see even more posts stating problems etc. just like what it was with the 1S.
No device is perfect out of the box, guaranteed that every single device will have problems, even the iphones, which are suppose "to just work out of the box" have problems with the screen, buzzing in ear piece, poor battery life for a lot of handsets and signal problems as well etc.
And just because people experience certain problems with their devices does not mean that it applies to every single handset there is in the world.....
When OP asks this question here, I assume you ask the same on s3 forum cos you will for sure have most of people recommend one s here and s3 there.
There is no definitely good or bad, or better or worse between these two. Even one s is not HTC's flagship, give it to other brands, it could enough take the crown.
We could only rationally compare the specs and provide personal preference which is so depending on individules. I wouldn't deny that s3 does have better specs in some areas but one s wins in others. And one s has a few issues such as the mao coating chipping off. But it does not stop us loving the phone, rather, it only makes us love it even more cos only when you care your device, you want it better, right? Just like me, I never know what problem s3 has and will have, simply because I don't really care, I am satisfied with my beloved one s and I am pretty sure I will keep loving it since it is almost almost perfect.
So, the best way to find out which one to get, is to see the specs first, then find out any issues with both, especially if there is any deal breaking one, if you still cannot decide, go play with both in your local shops and feel them yourselves. However, I do recommend avoiding black one s cos it has hardware issue, but grey one is fine.
In the end I would say, I lovey my one s! Hope lots of people do the same (of course, try love your one s, not mine )

HTC One S:
Much better design and sexier
Camera software is better (i think it is)
Htc sense 4.0 (which i think is much better then touchwiz)
I figure for the money im better off with the gs3 since i paid 250 plus taxes for my one s. but i will see.

Im in the EXACT same boat as you. I got my One S for 290 on Tmo with upgrade and am looking to sell back my One S for the GSiii. The only thing is I have til the end of this week to decide! Haha. If I sell back to T-Mo, will I be able to upgrade again?
Regarding reboots, since release day pretty much, I have only had 2 reboots and they both happened when I was using swiftkey beta 3, so it may have been related to that app due to it being in "beta" stages.....
Haven't had any more reboots since the latest beta version and update for the 1S *touch wood*

yeah u can still upgrade if u return it within the 30 days or whatever days u have. i probably will trade mine back in right before it ends. it just depends on how much the gs3 cost me. i cant stand no micro sd card expansion. i know we get drop box but what good is drop box when ur out and u get crappy 2g? its pretty much useless and so is google music. this is why i would much rather have expandable memory so i dont have to rely on my internet connection. it just sucks to give up such a sexy ass device plus i normally hate samsung and love htc but i feel like im getting more for my money if the gs3 cost me the same as the htc one s cost me. if it cost more then i will stick with the one s.

That is the exact same reason I am considering switching over for. Thanks for the reply, nice to know I get my upgrade privilege back. If you find out how much the GSiii will cost on upgrade, please let me know. I will do the same for you
EDIT: I read Samsung states that the newest device should be 199 with contract (upgrade I assume as well if TMo is good). So same price if not cheaper if TMo does or doesn't have the 50 mail in rebate like with the One S (at least for me in Chicago). I found that on THIS article.

Sweet if its 199 with no rebates then I will get it asap. I paid 250 plus tax and over night shipping which cost me 340 which is kinda to much money for this phone. I sent the rebate in but it can take up to 8 weeks to get my 50

Yeah the size is nice and its 720p which is also nice. I like the expandable micro sd and the removable battery is nice as well and NFC support.

Not an issue for a lot of people as some are happy with the stock ROM in its current state and see no reason to root and flash a custom ROM yet as the 1S is super fast and smooth out of the box with great battery life and features.
Also is that not only if you use their method via their website for unlocking or whatever it is?
Is the front camera really that important? Out of all my friends and family that I know who also have a front camera on their android phones, no one actually uses it......
The quality isn't amazing, but it isn't terrible....

I agree with this post almost completely.....except that I am definately having the data issue. I am hoping against hope that the ghost firmware update will correct this.
I returned mine yesterday and am having the same problem with this second one.
Edit-I think I'm in a fringe/low lieing area. I never get a real good signal, but the indicator fluctuates wildly. Mostly at 1-2 bars or less.
I myself would choose the One S over the SIII. Which I did.
I was a little concerned about the battery but it has turned out to be a non issue. Battery life is superb!
Changed my mind. I am sticking with the One S. Build quality is wayyyy better plus I would have to shoot myself in the groin if I had to deal with TouchWiz, even for one day. It's nice that you can have much more memory, but that's about it.

yeah it does suck but at least there is apex launcher which makes any phone nicer lol. plus im sure there will be a cm9 rom for it somewhere along the way. lol im still thinking about it. i probably wont make up my mind till i see the pricing official from tmobile

Why is the One S underestimated??

Guys I have seen lots of reviews of our phone.I own it for two months and I am very pleased with it.In fact in most reviews is faster than other premium phones and except for the screen resolution in terms of characteristics is great. Also its size is great and all these made me choose it between hox and gs3.In fact I had it side by side with hox and in swapping hox fealt heavy and laggy compared to hos.S4 is really great. But, it is not considered to be top range and has lost value pretty easily. Its retail price is close to the others but it is considered cheaper. These facts had made me to reconsider my buy and thinking of changing device. What you guys think?

Most probably it's because it has flaws, that are unacceptable in a top-notch high end device?
Like the premium extra-durable cover, that needs to be handled with extra care, and it still does not guarantee, that there will be no chipping?
Or the light leaks below the front glass?
Or the squeaking top cover?
Or the ridiculously small storage capacity?
Or the far from perfect video support (I need to have two extra players installed, and I still am not sure if the movie I have just downloaded will play or not)?
The only reason I am still keeping it is the perfect form factor, but every time I notice a new scratch, that appears out from nowhere, I just want to get rid of this expensive piece of crap.
Thats y u need to root. I have the rom i ported from HTC ONE S with new kernel..runs just as fast, obviously rooted, overclocked, v6 supercharged and swap enabled minus bloat...u should stay with it. Root it and get the energized from NRGZ8..themed and tweaks..He is one of the best developers

Look at it from a customers point of view, who aren't phone/tech geeks like us. Lets say 60/70% did some homework ad looked around. They decided on andriod over ios. They seen whats on the market and might even watched some youtube clips.
What most people will likely see:
Quadcore > Dualcore (Most people wont know what or S4 can do)
Bigger screen > better form factor. I think most people won't take the time to pick the phone up and hold it. and see how it feels in their hands.
And the one S got a pretty crappy screen regarding resolution/density.
This plus the fact our phone is just about 100 euro's? cheaper than the one X or SIII which excel in all these points.
Most people wont see the elegance of this device. You have to stand still and hold it will you fall in love with the seize, form factor, build quality and design of this device. And I think most wont/will do this when they walk in the phone store, because there are so many choices.
And this is if they disregarded htc completely because their friend, bother, uncle had a htc once and they didn't like that one.

What a load of BS
I have yet to see anyone get 6-7 hours on screen time on the GS 3 from one charge out of the box (unless you're someone who keeps airplane mode on, screen brightness to like 0% etc.). Going by proper usage as in wifi on all the time or 3G/H data and auto brightness with some browsing, phone calls/texts, quick game, some videos etc. the one S battery life is better, (maybe not by much) due to the S4 chip and smaller screen with a lower res. At best the GS 3 seems to get about 5 hours on screen time and at best the one S gets 6 hours on screen time, however, the majority of people seem to be getting only about 3-4 hours on screen time spread across a 1-2 days with the GS 3 where as the majority of people are getting 4-5 hours on screen time spread across 1-3 days.
Also the only areas where the GS 3 is better by a lot are:
- screen in terms of res. and size
- storage
- 1080P recording
- NFC
- NLED
The S is better in:
- IMO sense largely the camera overall, way more features, much better UI (camera quality is more or less the same, wins some, looses some), gallery, calendar app etc. only good thing about touchwiz are the tweaks/features like smart stay, smart status bar, which can be had on pretty much every mobile now through apps
- build and perceived quality and IMO looks
- better CPU for performance per core (more important than having an extra 2 cores as hardly any apps utilise dual fully let alone quad), power efficiency, heat
- cheaper
Everything else is more or less the same, audio, camera quality etc.
The words, which you should be using is a more "complete package"

Have had my one S since April and have no chipping at all apart from the inside of the USB port, not exactly the most careful either, I just keep it in a pocket of its own, set it down on a clean surface, I only use a case every now and again.
Is that really an issue? I only notice it in pitch black whenever I have a black wallpaper showing. Besides the buttons are far better than the GS 3 buttons especially since the Gs3 has a hard home button, which just ruins the look of the front and better than many other devices IMO, only way it can be topped is with on screen buttons like the GN). Oh and btw so does the GS 3 and a lot of other phones:

PB model isn't as bad but it still does as well.
EDIT:
Oh wait you mean, the way the light actually goes on to the bottom of the screen? Again is that really an issue? As I said, only time I notice it is in pitch black with a completely black wallpaper. You will also probably notice black spots on the screen with a black wallpaper but again, this is normal on every AMOLED based screen.
Have had no problems with squeaking on mine. Even if there was a problem, it still has far better build quality than any other phone and the ceramic back would make up for it IMO.
Storage is a problem for a lot of people, however, if it is, then the people just won't bother looking at this phone then and get the GS 3 or something with an SD slot, I have no problems with mine, over 80 apps installed, this includes a number of games including games like dead trigger and I still have 1.53GB available, I have 876 photos including 1080P/slow motion videos, loads of emulator ROM files, wallpapers/icons etc. and I still have 4.81GB left, could easily free up the majority of that space as all my photos are backed up each day to my PC and I imagine that "average joes" wouldn't be overly fussed about it either. After all the Galaxy nexus etc. have no SD slots and limited storage yet they do very well still, just not as well as the like of the GS 3 and GS 2 etc. For me and a lot of other people storage isn't a problem therefore we don't really consider it a con for ourselves.
What problems are there with video support, any file I have thrown at it plays flawlessly on BS player, this includes 720/1080P MKV's (size is 10GB+, split up into parts), AVI, MP4 etc.

Not really true, why do you think the iphone 4/4s is so popular Many "average joes" can't stand the size of a lot of these phones today or the plastic used and is why they largely go for the iphone as it is small and feels great and looks great (not keen on the looks myself but I can see why people like it so much) They even consider the one S and GS 2 to be too big
It is simply due to the lack of advertising, I still have not seen one ad on TV for the one S, always the one X and have lost count of how many ads there have been for the GS 3 now......... and HTC don't seem to be too popular here (UK), a lot of people look down on them, even the majority of average joes seem to think that they are an awful company, no idea why though, granted their support isn't the best when it comes to sending mobiles of for repair etc. and some of their phones have been rather crap but the one S and one X (now that the issues have been sorted out) are their best phones they have released to date and sense V4 is much better than previous versions.
The only real problem that people (the ones who know know a bit more about phones than the average joes) have with the one S is:
- storage
- pentile matrix used instead of RGB
I don't really have any problem with those, the pentile is noticeable in some areas, however, I only notice it when I concentrate on the edges of icons and have my face really close to the screen, the rest of the screen is great, colours, viewing angles, blacks and best of all, how easy it is to see the screen in sunlight, don't have to be above 70% brightness to easily make out what is on the screen, no need to cover the screen with your hand etc. Plus apparently pentile matrix is better for battery life and so I personally rather have it due to that reason.
Anandtech sum my views up pretty much spot on regarding the screen quality:

I came from a GS2 to One S (S4) - but only for a week. Reasons are, the OLED display is not good enough for me, sorry but it is not up to much in terms of resolution and light output. The black case chips on its own, it seems. I've had and sold several smartphones over the recent years and NEVER had any marks on the case or screen. I'm careful but not anal about it. This phone just made me weep! Finally, the so-called notification LED is a freakin sick joke. Pointless engineering faux-pas.
Now happy with my Sony XS...
Here are the reasons that tipped my clicker finger to buy the One S...
T-Mobile now has unlimited data and that's switchable between 5G
The One S has 42 Mbps (so does the Samsung S2/3)
Those 2 above provide backed up data at an avg of 18 Mbps in my house. So, AT&T's LTE was eliminated.
One S is a better device for my needs... size and interface
One S has a very bright display that's easier to read
That's only a few. The S3 is a nice plastic phone with a lot of stuff.
The stuff I need and the functionality of using it is on the One S.
I debated long and hard and did a lot of research on the One S and the SIII before buying and finally decided on the One S. Couldn't be happier with my decision. The quality and performance of the One S is great. The SIII feels cheap and is so hyped up. I get 6 hours screen on time overclocked at 1.72GHhz and score over 6000 on quadrent. I also like that I can choose between sense and pure android.
My gf got the S3 and I got the one S, I'm happy with my choice.
The S3 was too big for my liking and had TouchWiz. I also thought the One S would have better ROM options once I decide to root the phone.
Either way I ended up with a nice upgrade from my MT4G

[Review] HTC One X vs. HTC One

I've been using an HTC One X from AT&T since last summer on Scott's various CleanROMs and have really enjoyed the phone. It was excellent. Then, the HTC One was announced. I was immediately envious and having already used my upgrade, I knew it would be a long time before I had one.
A couple of weeks ago, I was listening to SiriusXM on my HTC One X via LG's bluetooth headset and I was just having a grand time until I pulled the phone from my pocket to notice that the screen was no longer lighting up. It was responsive, the phone worked, touch worked, but you couldn't see anything. AT&T replaced it under warranty and I had a brand new HTC One X on the 3.18 unhackablefornow update.
I couldn't live like that. I tried. I spent a week hating my phone, the very hardware I'd loved for so long.
After the wife got sick of me complaining, I got the demand to go buy whatever I wanted if I'd just stop complaining. I got the HTC One Dev Edition and have had a couple of days with it. It's really nice, feels great in hand, the front speakers sound great, Blinkfeed is annoying, but the rest is fine. The 64gb is really the only thing that is dramatically different though. The IR remote is sort of cool I suppose, but nothing that I'll probably use with any real frequency. I like that the USB hole is in the bottom now too instead of hanging out the side so awkwardly.
The point of all this? For those with your HTC One Xes that are just rocking along and doing exactly what you like, there's hardly a reason to "upgrade". I like certainly like the beveled screen on the One X more--the One has a raised edge, so exactly the opposite of how smooth and nice the One X is. The aluminum case is sure slick looking and feels nice, but I like the rubberized plastic on the One X. It sits nicer on your lap/leg/dash/sofa/etc. too. And for some reason, the damn on/off button is moved to the other side of the phone. I'll get used to that I suppose, but why? It was in a fine spot before on the previous generation, why move it?
Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to bash HTC. Both phones are excellent and w/ the 64gb, it's sort of the phone I've always looked forward to owning so my whole music collection could be at my finger tips. If you're on the fence though, there's not a lot of reason to ditch that reliable device we've all loved over the past year. Enjoy it and wait for the next thing and buy it when you're due for an upgrade, not for $650.
I hope that helps some of you that were drooling every time the thing came on the TV like I was.
Hopefully there will be an exploit for the One X on 3.18 one of these days and I'll turn the new One X into a great little back up phone/tablet.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree, having now owned both. I just walked into an AT&T store to check it out in person several days before upgrading, and after flipping through the UI, I was not 100% impressed with it compared to the One X. I mean, sure, the specs are an improvement by comparison and it's something that I'm happy with purchasing, but if my HOX wasn't broken and/or I wasn't able to get an upgrade, I would have been ok with saving my money.
I really like the build quality. I don't have any of the crazy gaps people are talking about. It feels nice, looks nice, and sounds great.
What I don't like compared to the HOX is Sense 5. I really thought it was going to be better than Sense 4+ but it's not. I haven't rooted/unlocked it, and have no immediate plans to, but I hate how I can't edit the icons on the dock. Also, the dock follows you into the app tray. That SUCKS. Blink feed is annoying and you can't disable it...only change your homescreen to another tile. I also find that I like the capacitive buttons on the HOX way better. Half the time, they don't light up on the One and aren't that sensitive. And, what's the deal with HTC and hating capacitive buttons?! THe Inspire 4G had 4 buttons, the HOX had 3, and now the One has 2! Pretty soon, we'll only have "One." (See what I did there ) One final thing that seems annoying is for me, at least, when the display is on Auto Brightness, I seen to experience a weird flicker on the display. I don't know if it's just me, my particular phone, or what, but it is annoying.
If you need to have the latest and greatest, then stop reading this pointless drivel and go buy one. Otherwise, root and rom on with your HOX.
Of course, these are just my 2 cents. I could be wrong.

Thanks! Ive been on the fence, but don't have an upgrade. this makes me feel a little better
the biggest difference is
battery life and speakers
- both have amazing screen (the htc one seems to have better whites imo, and more a bit more color, and its a bit sharper, but the one x is a bit brighter and has the floating screen effect that the one sadly doesnt have)
- both are snappy (htc one, a bit faster)
cameras - both plus and negatives, i would say HTC ONE (overall), htc one x takes nice images in sunlight though
but yeah, the speaker on the one x is a disgrace, its weird how they went from worst speaker to best speakers lol
Just placed my order for the One on T-mobile. My One XL needs a new mainboard so I guess it's just going to be a nice paperweight for the time being.
I'm really curious to see how well I like it. I'll get it on Tuesday. I only played around with the display model at bestbuy but it was locked up tighter than fort knox.. You couldn't even swipe over the screen because it had a security lock covering the whole ting.
Which one to grab!
I have ordered One XL last week after lots of hesitation between it and the One, and this review from someone who owns both kinda support my choice, thanks
I have played with both devices in store, of course studied specs/hardware of both and worked out what my needs are and what I can/can't live with. I never buy phones on contracts so cost is an important factor here. My personal choice is based mainly on following:
ONE:
Pros: design, battery, cpu
Cons: the worst (for me) is the 2 buttons-logo combination instead for the usual and more reasonable 3 buttons, I can't get pass this for a $$$ flagship. Expensive compared to my other option, poor DIY-repairability which is important for me (regardless of warranty status).
ONE XL:
Pros: design, has 3 capacitive buttons, good deals for sim-free or pay as you go with available cheap carrier unlocking (Europe), much better DIY-repairability.
Cons: battery but can be changed to HOX+ battery 2100 mAh.
Cheers!
I've played with the (white) One and the S4 in the store. I hated the fact that the one is longer and somewhat bigger than the HOX. Although I have 2 available upgrades on my family plan, both att unlimited data grandfathered, I left the store without a new device. They didn't have any black ones at the time, I'll go back again to check that one out... Otherwise don't feel like upgrading.

I own both phones, and you can edit the apps in the dock, you just have to do exactly what you said above... go to the app tray and you can edit the apps in the dock from there (probably why the dock follows you to the app tray )

Hmm.. How about that! Thanks!
I own both phones. I've had the One XL since launch day (1 year, 9 days ago) and I bought the One a couple of days ago as a replacement. Perhaps I can shed some light on the differences between the two phones for those of you who are considering one of the two. Sorry for the long post, but I felt I should be thorough.
HTC One vs HTC One XL Comparison
This is just a strict comparison about random aspects of the two phones... There isn't really any order to it; it's more of just a long rant about the differences. I'll start off the comparison in my favorite way - looking at what's wrong with the new device.
Cons of the HTC One:
Physical Design: Since the plastic sides of the silver phone is white, the whole aluminum body looks white if you give it a quick glance. I hate white phones with a passion but aluminum is my favorite color so it's a trade off for me. Of course, this is a personal preference and will vary depending on the user. Other items regarding the physical layout of the phone include the size. The One is the same width as the One XL but it is slightly longer. If you were to take the One XL and add on a second row of capacitive buttons they would be the same size. Personally, I feel that the One's "aspect ratio" is better, but the phone is kind of long for my tastes. The iPhone 5 is a better size in my opinion, but again, this is just personal preference. Another thing that may or may not be of concern to you depending on whether you use a case is how easily the phone slips into your pocket. The One has sharp edges (similar to a macbook) so it doesn't slip into your pocket as easily. Similarly, since the edges are all made out of aluminum the phone will dent if you drop it on a hard surface. (So don't drop it)
Capacative Buttons: The One only has 2 capacitive buttons compared to the 3 that the One XL has which is super annoying. HTC did this to comply with Google's design guidelines but other manufacturers *cough* Samsung *cough* have ignored this suggestion. They should have made the HTC logo a capacitive button as well. The touch pad doesn't fully extend that far off the screen, so even with a custom kernel the HTC logo only works "sometimes" as a button. I believe this is an engineering problem that could be attributed to AT&T. The HTC logo is not clear and it does not light up; it is painted on underneath the screen - the same as the logo at the top of the One XL's screen - in metallic lettering. If they had put a capacitive sensor above the logo it would constantly interfere with the metallic paint (This is my personal theory, but I think it's sound).
Another disadvantage of the One is the software isn't as mature as the One XL. The One XL is at the peak of it's development cycle; there are very few bugs and everything has been optimized. The One is new to the game and we're still waiting for HTC to release new kernel sources along with everything else. Developers are still trying to figure out how to work with the phone. The developer of the ROM I use, for instance, doesn't even own the phone yet!
Carrier Loyalty: As with the One XL, AT&T gets special privileges. AT&T is the only carrier who gets a black HTC One. They're also the only carrier who offers a 64GB version (The Developer Edition also has a 64GB version but it is only offered in silver).
Pros of the HTC One:
The HTC One isn't all bad though, not by a long shot. It has many numerous advantages over the One XL.
3rd Party Support: One of the best things about the One is that the phone is standardized among all carriers. You can buy a case in the Sprint store and it will work on your T-Mobile One. Additionally, all GSM phones (International, AT&T, T-Mobile, Developer Edition) can flash the same ROMs without having to worry about bricking the device. In many ROMs you just select what version you'd like your phone to be optimized for. This helps with development immensely! I'm so glad HTC did this. Supposedly the One will also be HTC's only flagship phone for this year, so you don't have to worry about an HTC One+ coming out in 4 months. I'm also very pleased to see that every carrier has put out advertisements for the One. I've seen many of them all over TV and even some in movie theaters. This is where HTC messed up last year. Unless the individual phone sells well 3rd parties won't make accessories for it.
The only real difference between the GSM variants is that the T-Mobile version includes more radio bands. Thus, if you want to get the most versatile version like me, get the T-Mobile version. It's also unbranded so it has no logos (aside from the "beatsaudio" logo on the back which the One XL also has)!
Physical Construction: The HTC One feels very solid in your hand thanks to the "zero-gap" construction. This means that the entire back/sides of the phone are all one piece. The plastic accents are all bonded to the aluminum backing, so it is similar to the One XL in that regard. Because the aluminum and plastic is CNC'd out in one piece you can consider it as a single unit; you will never feel the plastic injections with your finger unless you have a defective unit. It's somewhat similar to the unibody design of the One XL minus the speaker grills which are separate pieces - you can feel the transition between those pieces and the screen. This is normal.
Audio and Video Recording: The recording quality of the One is indisputable. It is simply superb. You can record video at a night club and actually enjoy the music and video afterwards. The microphone is insanely good. The video camera is designed to excel under low light conditions. One consequence of this is that the One's camera is only 4MP (slightly higher than 1080p) instead if the XL's 8MP. This means that the camera is great for what most people will use it for, but unfortunately I can no longer carry around my phone as a dedicated camera replacement (for vacations and things where I want a little better picture quality).
Performance: The One is FAST! Using 3DMark's new application you can test the gaming performance among various platforms. The HTC One GPU is actually more powerful than a nVidia 7900GS videocard (think precursor to the 8800GT)! I actually had one of those in my gaming PC a couple of years ago. To me this is insane. To think that my phone is more powerful than the higher-end gaming PC I built in 2006 (in some tests).
Battery Life: The battery life in the One is pretty good. I'm getting around 4.5 hours of on-screen time but I'm still tuning the phone. I've only had it for 3 days. The battery isn't even settled yet. I'm sure in 2 weeks I'll be seeing 7+ hours on-screen time once I get everything sorted out.
IR Remote: One small thing that no one thinks of is the HTC One's IR blaster integrated into the One's power button. You can now control all of your home theater equipment using your phone. This is very handy for people like me who always find themselves on the couch with their phone in their hand but don't want to take the time to search for the remote. HTC even includes a little TV guide app that lets you select a specific show and it will automatically change the channel for you. I like this!
Fixes from other Phones: The HTC One's notification LED is fixed from the One XL. It is bright and you can actually see it from all angles. The HTC One XL has an almost useless notification LED and can only be viewed when looking from the phone straight on. I once had a coworker stare at my One XL for 2 minutes before he asked me whether something was blinking. He thought it was but he wasn't entirely sure. The One has solved this very annoying problem.
Storage Space: The One has much more storage space than the One XL. The 32GB version has about 25GB of usable space where as the 16GB One XL only has about 9GB. This is nice if you're thinking about replacing an MP3 player or like to have mobile videos stored locally.
This is all I can stand to type for now. I'm sure I forgot stuff but I'll have to wait until I'm at a computer to finish the comparison. If you liked the review click thanks please.

I was in the unique position that I needed to switch to T-Mobile so I got it from their online store. After taxes it came out to $144 up front, then I pay for the rest of the phone $20 a month for... Idk, 24 months I think. Regardless of how much you spend up front, the phone itself is $600. Early termination fees on the HOXL with AT&T is at least $205 if you bought the phone when it came out.

If i'm busy at work (read: not procrastinating on my phone all day), it's lasted me two days with about 30% left. A lot better than my One XL.
I have both the One X and the One and in my opinion the One is much better than the One X. I still love both phones but the One is much more responsive, little to no hiccups at all unlike my One X, sense 5 is so much better than sense 4, and the speakers are amazing. Also battery life is much better on the one. I'm still on stock AT&T on my One and it's much snappier and more responsive than my One X ever was on cleanrom or viperxl.

Looking to join you guys soon! I think I've just about pushed my one x as far as it'll go and I'm ready to step it up a bit
Ugh, it is soooo tempting to get the One, especially with T-Mobile getting rid of the 2-year crap... now just gotta find a new job.

HTC One Vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

I have seen SO many threads about the pro's and con's of both handsets and most are based on bias because people just want to justify their purchase one way or another or are comparing 5 minutes of use in a shop with their every day phone. I have now got both phones and here is my "opinion" of the pros and cons for both....
Screen:
The One's screen is stunning but feels small compared to the S4 and while I am one of those people who prefers the unnatural oversaturated colours offered by the S4 the sharpness seems way better on the one. Icons on the S4 have a slight fuzzy look to them compare to the One like a JPG being stretched. Could all be down to the screen size which as I said I much prefer the S4's larger screen.
Design:
This is a lot of preference but anyone who says the S4 is better looking than the One is on crack or like I said justifying their own purchase. The Samsung's plastic obviously has benefits like being able to change the back cover when it is scratched and removable to access the battery or SD card (which I don't care about the battery as I don't keep phones for longer than 12 months usually and as long as the phone has ample storage for me I am fine). Also the plastic on the S4 feels greasy and gets dirty with fingerprints very easily. One thing that a lot of people don't like that Samsung keeps doing but I love is the physical home button. The fact I can with one hand turn the phone on with the home button is WAY better than the two handed approach with the One which the power can only be turned on by the power button on the top left. On a funny note I left my old S3 on the S4 box in my office and someone walked in and picked it up and said "wow how amazing is the new S4 it looks so much better than the S3", might be a good thing because people obviously like the look but it shows that the 4 isn't that big of a difference from the 3.
Camera:
This has been done to death but believe me that both are great. If the HTC had a 8mp camera it would be the definitive Android phone but it doesn't. Both has a lot of tricks and features and both do a great job. The HTC does a better job with low light and with moving objects and the S4 has way more details.
Sound:
HTC wins this hands down. Not only with the built in speaks but with headphones too. Samsungs audio player also pales in comparison to HTC's which is as with everything on the HTC beautiful and consistent with the resat of the OS but also correctly downloads album art and lyrics to play in a Karaoke mode.
Software:
This one I am really in two minds about and my comparison is purely on stock.. The HTC's new Sense is pretty amazing. Its fast and has a consistency in its look that Samsung should take note of. I have owned a S2 and S3 and Touchwiz has barely changed. Why is the SMS app black but the mail app is white and the calendar app is a wooden brown? It seriously feels like Samsung has way too many programmers working on Android and gave them all one app or part of the interface to work on and didn't allow them to communicate to the other people to get a consistent look. Its ugly and isn't customisable in many situations. I have shown people the S4 and they marvel at how smooth it is but until you actually run it along side the One for a period its hard to describe how much smoother the One is. Never stutters never and little pauses or skipping of animations like the S4 does. On the other hand all the things the S4 can do are cool, if not gimmicky and useless. Samsung have better support from developers and as such things like my Fitbit sync wirelessly with the S4 but not my One, Grindr crashes constantly on the One and more. Support for the one is pretty amazing already and its still brand new. I also love the fact I can download a ROM and easily install it which you can not do easily on the HTC. I only every use stock but I will use the Stock UK or American or German or what ever version is the newest as here in Australia new ROM are usually released pretty slowly. It becomes an addiction every day looking if a new Android version or ROM has been released to install and try on your Samsung. 90% of the S4's new features I have turned off, they aren't guaranteed to work 100% of the time and can be more trouble than they are worth. Example Smart stay... this rarely happens but it does happen and did happen with my S3 too is that I will put the phone down on my desk at work and it will never turn the screen off, some how it thinks my office's ceiling is a face and stays on. The one feature I do love of the S4 is the one where you wave your hand over it and it lights up for a few seconds to show the clock and alerts then turns back off. Also something simple that the S4 does that the HTC doesn't which I didn't realise until I had both was when you get a message or alert the Samsung turns the screen on and displays it (admittedly in an ugly pastel coloured but for SMS's) but the HTC will never turn the screen on unless you press the power button. I will also mention that Samsung's Touchwiz also seems unpolished and incomplete, little things like the MP3 player on the lock screen not correctly fitting and cutting the bottom off just makes me think again that Samsung's developers didn't work together to produce a single OS but instead a mish mash of individual bits to make one up (maybe they rushed it out to steal some of HTC's thunder).
Hardware:
Obviously Samsung wins this hands down but once again with Touchwiz slowing down the S4 the One just feels faster. Benchmarks are great but you don't live your life in a benchmark how the phone functions in every day use is what counts. All the sensors and support that Samsung has is way better than HTC. Just simple things like putting a magnet in the phone so covers know when they are closed and turn the phone off. Simple yet awesome. The fact that Samsung continues to make a flagship phone with only 16gb and then used up over half of it with is ugly bloated OS is just beyond forgiveness. So many people say well use the SD card but always remember that you can not install apps to the SD card and a few big games and your phone can be full. HTC has a 32 and 64gb model readily available here in Australia and I guarantee that the 32 and 64gb models of the S4 NEVER get launched here just like they did with the S3. SO many promises broken, no size over 16gb and no wireless charger released even though they showed them off at the launch.
Battery:
Both easily got me through a days use. The HTC didn't last as long in standby and the S4 didn't last as long in use so they pretty much evened each other out. The fact the S4 supports wireless charging is a huge plus for me. People ***** about its useless and not as fast as a cable but they obviously don't get it. With wireless Qi charging you can still use the cable when your in a hurry and need a fast charge but the convenience of just sitting the phone on my desk charger at work and its charging is priceless. I work 9-5 so if it sits on the charger for 8 hours then its never going to go flat on me. I don't have to worry about one of the staff stealing my Micro USB cable (which happens all the time) or even looking for a cable its just amazingly convenient to sit it down and its charging. I have ordered one of those Chinese Wireless Qi inserts for the S4 and cant wit to use it. You cant add that to the One and the One is very slow charging. VERY SLOW.
Conclusion:
Both phones are the pinnacle of Android technology right now for mobile phones and both deserve to be hugely successful. In the end I stuck with the S4 as my every day phone simply because the support it has from app developers like fitbit like I mentioned before, optional wireless charging, the home button, the screen size and the fact I can flash ROMs when ever I feel like it. Every now and then I think I have made a mistake and should keep using the One, mainly when I look at how ugly Touchwiz is and when I get stutters in the OS which is unforgiveable for a phone with this kind of power. All the flaws in the S4 can be fixed with software and I one day hope Samsung wakes up and makes Touchwiz have the same beautiful look and constancy of Sense, till then I will download other apps to replace Samsung's and hope the speed issues are resolved in updates in the future which I can flash so easily when ever I want to.
thanks for the recap on every other review out there. you are in the s4 forum, therefore s4 > htc one to all users here who arent trolls.

You are not talking about exynos variant right?
HTC One Cons:
- CID based roms
- Locked Bootloader, unlocking it will cost you a part of you warranty and a lot of anger if turned in for repair
- Slow updates
- Hboot versions determines wether you can flash/update a rom
This for me is enough not to buy any HTC even if it would be made of gold
iphone!
I was using the S600 9505 variant. And my post may have gone over things that reviews and such may have mentioned but no review covers it all and I have not seen a single review mention things like the fact the HTC screen doesn't turn on to show notifications.

Wow, yet another biased review that makes out its unbiased.....Jesus.
Couple of points:
With TW, you can change the background of the SMS app, if that annoys you? So what if its a different colour to the mail app.
Sense, unlike touchwiz doesn't have the quick settings it the notification bar. Sooooo convenient to be able to toggle things quickly without having to add widgets to the home screen.

What do you mean bias? Seems like your here to defend your decision to buy the S4. I have used both phones for weeks and I gave my observations. Simple. Not biased. I still love my S4 and that's what I am using today so I am hardly here to bash it.

Finally a comparison between the two. I couldn't find any.
WTF guys?! This is the general thread. OP had both devices and felt like posting his thoughts. You dont like? Move the #$^#$^ along and keep your opinions to yourself.
I dont get cretins that like Unibody design phones with no storage expansion.
Ok, on built 32 GB of space is ok, its just that when you already have a nice and good microSD card, you would need to throw that thing away and you would need to tediously copy the data from the sd card to the phone.
What about the battery? After 2 years, if you intend to keep the phone, your battery is going to be much weaker than when you bought it. Batteries get weaker with time and lose their performancel.
Sure you can keep going on, but good luck using that thing with 50% or less battery performance after 2 years.

These types of threads are funny and fairly frequent. OP, this is what you're essentially saying - "everyone else's opinion isn't as good as mine so let me tell you what's really going on." And there's bias throughout your post and that's OK; but call it that. Everyone wants different things so their view is always going to take that in to account no matter how objective they try to be. I like Samsung's s/w features and Sense doesn't even have Awake Stay. So if I were to review TW vs. Sense which do you think I'd like best? But that's just me and I know I'm in the minority; at least on XDA. When expressing an individual opinion the best approach is to state your position, describe how you use your device, share your findings and then let others draw a conclusion based on their needs as to which phone or feature is "best."
Iphones?
As if we really need threads like this

If i had to choose between the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, it would be the Galaxy S4 by a long mile. Or not really since i already have the Samsung Galaxy S4 now

There are many reasons why i did choose the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One. And maybe some of my reasons are the same reasons for you to choose the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One. I'm gonna write down all of my reasons to buy the Galaxy S4 here, so this post might get pretty long.
1. Polycarbonate body. Since this Polycarbonate body is made out of some kind of plastic, it doesn't spread the heat around your whole hand when the phone gets hot. Yes, alumininum looks and feels great, but it have a negative side because aluminum spreads the heat way more out than plastic does. Therefor, the HTC One will spread the heat to your whole hand instead of having the heat on one place only when it gets hot, like it is on the Galaxy S4.
This article shows how hot the Galaxy S4 gets under heavy usage and where the heat is and how the heat spreads out: http://blog.gsmarena.com/thermal-im...rfaces-shows-that-the-device-rarely-gets-hot/
2. HTC One gets alot hotter than the Galaxy S4 according to NordicHardware's test of the Galaxy S4. And therefor my reason number 1 is pretty valid. The article is in Swedish though, so if you want it translated, then use Google Translate.
I see some complaints that the Galaxy S4 gets pretty hot for someone. And if the Galaxy S4 gets that hot, then the HTC One for sure gets even hotter and even more bad to hold.
3. It have a microSD card slot. So yeah, i'm currently using a Samsung MicroSDXC Pro UHS-1 64 GB Class 10 card in my Galaxy S4 witch is great. Taking tons if pictures and recoring alot of videos when you are on a vacation is going to take up a HUUUUUGE amount of space. And not to mention that 1080p movies are needed when you have a 1080p screen. And those 1080p movies can take huge amount of space to. Same goes to alot of mp3 files / musics.
4. It have a removable battery witch means you can change out to a fully charged battery when you are out of battery on your main battery in 10 seconds. This allows you to keep doing what you are doing without having a big massive brick of a battery pack with you witch will be in your way when you are using the phone.
Or you can even buy a bigger battery that gives you over 3000 mAh (an example) witch will last you for ages.
5. It have a cleaner and better design than the HTC One. This is my opinion after holding and looking at the HTC One.
6. 5 inch screen is better than 4.7 inch screen. Specially when the Galaxy S4 are smaller in size than the HTC One.
7. The Super AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S4 is way better than the IPS LCD screen on the HTC One, because you can choose if you want the colors to really pop or if you just want to have perfect color accuracy (thanks to the Adobe RGB / Professional Photo mode) on the phone.
8. It have Android 4.2.2 witch is better than Android 4.1.2 that the HTC One have.
9. Samsung releases Android updates way faster than HTC.
10. It have alot of sensors witch i find great. No other smartphones have this many sensor inside a phone.
11. It have tons of cool and handy features witch i mean is there to bring the development of the current smartphones forward rather than just updating something you already have or something existing on your phone or just stand still like iOS have done since 2009. Some of the features the Galaxy S4 have doesn't really works optimal yet, but i still think it's pretty nice to have those features and they will also get better in future updates. It's always handy to have WHEN you need it and when you want to use them.
12. It's lighter and thinner witch makes it more pocket friendly. Not only that, but the backside of the phone is more flatter witch makes it better to use on a flat surface.
13. The camera on the Galaxy S4 are WAY WAY better than the HTC One in light situations. Here are some pictures i have been taking with my Samsung Galaxy S4. Remember that those pictures under are BIG.
Here is a picture of the same flower with HDR effect on.
As you can see, the true power of the Galaxy S4's camera makes the HTC One's camera to looks horrible in light situations.
14. The sound quality when you are recording videos are also better than the HTC One's sound quality. The proof is here:
15. The HTC One wasn't available when i had to buy a new phone. So since the Galaxy S4 was available when i needed a new phone, then i bought the Galaxy S4.
So there you have it. This is 15 of my reasons why i bought the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One.
Here is a little help, if you can't decide whether to take the one or s4:

Anyone interested in M10

I'm definitely interested. I love this phone, but I didn't think the M9 was much of an upgrade. We shall see though. It will between htc 10 & moto X pure

I would like some insight too.
1st. Would like the M10 2nd. Google (read about *4G issues?) 6P .
question is being on VZW.
will s-off and root be possible for M10 on vzw?
??
So I was on the fence for a while going back and forth with the leaks, but I think after the official announcement I'm in. Everything about this phone sounds great. I'm also liking their new ad campaign. HTC's #1 issue has been marketing. Yes the M9 was a miss for most of us on this forum, but that's because we already had the M8 and there was little reason to upgrade. The M9 was in many ways still an excellent phone. I really hope that the HTC 10 + Vive can help HTC recapture the market. The fact that they are releasing a new phone that pushes the envelope in nearly every direction despite shrinking margins and posting a net loss is very impressive.
I can't say with certainty, but I'm very hopeful of the s-off / rooting potential of this phone, even then VZW version. The unlocked GSM model will be able to unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.
As it seems is always the case these days, with everything new we get, we lose some features as well. Let's take a moment of silence for stereo front facing speakers and the IR blaster... add them to the Qi wireless charging we lost after the DNA.
My only complaints with the HTC 10 so far: Facebook will come preinstalled and can't be removed (ugh), and the rear camera sticks out, which is fine if you use a case, but I almost never do, so that's annoying.
Oh, and I apparently the Camellia Red colorway is a KDDI JPY exclusive, which stinks. I have the red M8 and I love it! If I could buy a red 10 I'd be so happy.

I have a feeling S-Off will come to the HTC 10, Jcase had this to say
https://twitter.com/jcase/status/719891850484559873
HTC 10 will be on all carriers except At&t, the unlocked variant will of course work on there still. I am so excited for this device, it has everything you could want in a phone. Sense UI is still great & it being closer to stock is a plus. This & the Galaxy S7 are the only 2 devices right now that have my attention, its either a phone that can be Rooted & Boomsound or a phone that is Water Resistant & has Layers Support.

Thanks buddy, I love my ?8.
I recently dropped it and cracked the screen. So I have been looking for a replacement.
Would like it to be better then the M8.
Being I'm on VZW unlimited. I know Big red is locking all doors. I would like to use my phone with the least possible restriction. Would like the phone to have great community/dev support.

And a built in battery which makes it a totally useless phone for me. My M8 is the only phone I'll ever own with a non-removable battery. Sorry HTC, not for me.
No removable battery or no removable storage card = NO!

One out of two = NO! Micro SD slot AND removable battery = minimum acceptable features.
I may pick up a used Galaxy 4 again and activate it, the M8 is now two years old and the battery life has dropped quite a bit... <sigh>
Removable batteries are not a priority for the majority of users. In all the years I've had a phone I've never swapped out batteries. While I understand there may be use cases that require removable batteries, I've found that portable battery packs solve most use cases. If you must have the ability to swap batteries than I suggest looking at the LG G5.
I like the HTC 10. Seems like a solid upgrade, especially the camera which is now one of the best on the market compared to the M9 being one of the worst. Sense 8, and lack of bloatware seems fantastic for the unlocked version. If Javacard can s-off the HTC 10 on Verizon, that might pull me over! Sense is probably the cleanest, smoothest UI I've used.
I ended up getting a Nexus 6P in mid-march. Love the screen size. I'm holding LTE band 4 a lot better than I did with the M8, and can now get LTE in my basement when I was only able to get 3G on M8.
The 4G issue you were referring to could have been fixed by the last major firmware update, but who knows. Haven't had a problem with mine. Go figure. Every phone has its own personality
Only annoying part is Verizon includes free visual voicemail, but no way to use it (no app compatible) so I keep getting a text for each voicemail. Can be rectified by calling CS and downgrading to basic voicemail, but don't care enough. I may get 1 voicemail every month? lol
I use Google Voice for my voicemail, it's free and much better than Verizon's offering. As an added bonus, you get a 2nd phone number which is great for when you don't want to give out your actual cell to anyone (filtering calls is much easier in Google Voice than through Verizon).
I'll wait until the first or second price drop. Since my m8 just got marshmallow, I'm very happy with it and don't need to be on the latest and greatest. I'd rather have the money in my pocket.
I would love to get another HTC phone but the 10 isn't up to snuff compared to the Samsung Galaxy S7. I was leaning towards the S7 just because of the wireless charging ability and better camera.

I was interested (more so bored with having the same phone over a year) but then I bought my wife a galaxy s7 and I can say for certain other than camera performance, faster charging and specs nothing has changed since 2014 worth upgrading for. For two days I ran app after same app on both with no real difference in real world speed (running stock rooted marshmallow with NO mods) despite benchmarks and specs. Increased resolution serves no purpose other than specs on a 5" screen and human eyes. Both screens look perfect. I guess a fingerprint reader would be nice for people who lock their phone or think it's easier to pull out a phone than bank card (she doesn't use it. Never even been set up).
Point is after real world comparison nothing revolutionary has changed. They aren't even getting prettier and thinner anymore (m8 and m9 look better and thinner). So I bought a skin/wrap and I feel like I have a brand new phone. Pretty sure this is why at some point they stop supporting newer software. From 2014 many people would never need to buy a new phone except for outdated software.

I'm considering the G5, hoping someone will unlock the bootloader. I suspect people with newer phones haven't encountered the battery problems I have with my M8 (my LAST PHONE with a non-removable battery!) which is over 3 years old, the battery was fine until around 30 days ago...
I hit the sack around 11 PM and connect the phone to the charger, I get up at 7 AM and take the phone off the charger. When new, I could often get to 10 PM w/o recharging, recently I have to recharge TWICE during the day and today I noticed the phone won't charge more than 85%!
So now my options are: Replace battery, this involves losing the phone for some days and spending a bunch of bucks or new phone, again a bunch of bucks or buying a used phone from Swappa, again a bunch of bucks all of which would never have happened if I could only remove the old battery and slide in a new one!
I'll definitely try to get it. When ever they decide to release it on VZW. Way worth the upgrade from the M8 . 4 gigs of ram, SD 820, fingerprint, new boomsound/headphone audio, better cameras, 4k video recording, USB C, QC 3.0, a little bigger screen size but without the size of the phone increasing, I assume better battery life.
I stopped by a Verizon store yesterday to play with their display 10. It's a nice phone, but I don't think it's worth the $600-700 price to upgrade over the M8. I like the physical design of the M8 better, not a fan of the chamfored edged on the back or the rear camera bump. For the "best mobile camera ever" I was underwhelmed. Maybe it's just the awful lighting in the verizon store, but the image quality wasn't substantially different. I noticed the 10's front camera is much less wide-angle than the M8's. Moving the headphone jack to the top sucks. Back to the days of wires sticking out the top and bottom of your device. Also, you know how the M8 has that glossy plastic strip across the top, which blends well into the IR blaster power button? Well the 10 has the same strip except it's a soft matte grey plastic that I just don't think works at all. It looks like the original M7 did.
To be honest I'm a bit disappointed. I rushed out to buy the Thunderbolt when it came out, I waited for the store to open to pick up the DNA. Upgrading to the M8 felt like a major upgrade. Going from M8 to 10 though just feels like a slight iteration, gaining some new bells and whistles but losing others. Maybe HTC will get the 11 right, if they survive that long...

Pixel count the image is wider. The m8 only has a 4MP camera while the 10 has a 12MP camera. It shoots @12mP in 4:3. The wide-screen mode is a cropped version of the 12MP and still is a lot more MP than the m8. Also the screen is a much higher resolution than the m8 so the same pictures from the m8 would take up less space.
Honestly the phone is solid. Battery is great. Been using mine for a couple days now.
