[Q] Screen will not light, help with ADB?!? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My screen will not illuminate. I believe its a hardware issue, but I'd like to verify if anyone can help. The soft keys will light up and I can hear notifications, but the screen does not light up when I press the top button or slide the keyboard open. Sometimes if I fiddle with the slider, the backscreen lights up, and if it is fully open the screen will show, but with illumination so dim its not really possible to use.
I can still feel the haptic feedback, but I'm at a loss. At first I thought this was due to flashing a rom, but I restored back to a prior one that worked well. I cannot view the screen in recovery either. I would like to mount the phone as usb storage to my computer to remove a couple of .zips on the sd card and reboot. Anyone point to or show me how to do this or any other restore/resets through adb, maybe re-install a .zip through adb? Is there a way to do this through adb, pushing files or otherwise, as I cannot see anything on my phone?
thanks

Reset
You have to factory reset the phone due to one of the roms you may have installed. Sorry

Give that man a Cupie Doll . Either that, or your screen went south. In any case he is correct RUU, and take it back.

Home Button, Trackball, Power Button.....BLUE LIGHT?

I pressed the Home button+Trackball+Power Button.....when starting my G1.
The Phone doesn't "power on" but the led light comes on BLUE and stays lit.
Any idea what this is for or means?

Wow, clearly you have no brain. My phone is bricked, check the New SPL and IME thread and maybe you'll have the slightest clue what I'm talking about.
MY QUESTION HERE IS VERY SIMPLE.
While trying to get past G1 boot screen, I pressed the
Home button+Trackball+Power.....
The Phone doesn't "power on" but the led light comes on blue and stays lit.
Battery pulls have been done numerous times over the past 2 hours. If you don't have a clue as to what the blue light represents, then don't bother replying to this thread. Ok.
Thanks.
when u installed the new spl did u reflash the rom?
cuz thats the problem
when the new spl is added you have to reflash the rom u were using
dont wipe so you wont lose your apps
A customer came into my store 2 days ago with a g1 that would not turn on and all it had was just a blue led lit. Tried everything to get a screen to come up and no luck.
That same update bricked my phone, t-mobile boot is all i see
home+power = dont work
camera+power= dont work
nothing did now i have to return it

I rephrased my 1st post so I could get an answer about what this post is for. I'm not an idiot, I know how to flash an SPL/ROM/ whatever.
The phone is bricked, I am one of many, check the New SPL and IME thread.
That has nothing to do with my topic here though. Thanks.

I can get the G1 screen to come up, but that's all. I just didn't know if the combo of keys I pressed to start the phone meant something.
Turns out if you just press the trackball in and press power that will trigger just the Blue LED light to come on as well.
Just trying to figure out if this is useful or just more G1 shananigans. lol.
is the G1 screen comes up your phone is NOT bricked...
try flashing the regular JF ADP1.5.. if that dont go, start flashing old roms(RC29, RC30 etc..) hope that works
Saw this posted on a forum for T-Mo
the omniscient Google sez:
(found on forums.tmonews.com)
The problem is caused by ppl powering the device on, and when they press the red END key they are also holding down the MENU and pushing in the track ball at the same time.
This then enables a lock on the phone the only way around this is to pull the battery and turn the phone back on with/out pressing an holding the menu and trackball.

well plug the charger into the phone with the battery still intact.....then remove the battery while the phone is still plugged in. then unplug the charger and plug it back in........place battery back into phone and then power it up. That worked for me.

It actually can be bricked head over here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=515822 and you will see that it is. Persons are not able to get into recovery even unable to get into the boorloader screen. By pressing home + power or camera + power. it can be bricked and show the G1 boot screen there are 7 or so phones that are like this now.

Just a generic lock? awesome. That's all I was wondering. Thank you!
Blue light happened when I washed my G1. I can occasionally get it to start up, try hitting the power button for a sec, hit it a gain a few times and see what happens. Throwing some trackball presses in there seemed to help too. G1 is an odd creature...
7 phones bricked and still counting thanks to the H special SPL.
Not so sure it's the SPL
one correspondent who purports to be an associate of T-Mo suggests that that button-press combination invokes a hardware lock that can be undone. see above

W/B if that solution works for you; maybe it'll help the other 6 stricken G1s too
sir*mez:
If it gets to the T-Mobile-screen, the phone is NOT bricked.
If it's able to show the picture, it furthermore shows that atleast that part of the flash is intact (The picture resides on the splash1 partition, while the secondary is on splash2).
barlev869 & arqueware:
Hardware-lock? My bet would be this is some sort of test-mode, maybe for hardware-diagnostics?
It's not a lock if it can be avoided by just rebooting the phone (Which it can, i've been in the blue-led mode several times to try to guess what it was doing when booted like that...).

From my understanding of the problem, You're half right. Part of the system does indeed come up but unfortunately that isn't enough to get adb to run or to boot into recovery mode or into fastboot. Basically, while you're right that it's not fully bricked and it is theoretically possible to fix it, the phone doesn't have any interface at all to do so. It'd be like trying to fix BIOS settings on a computer when you don't have a keyboard.
NOTE: I haven't flashed the new SPL so haven't been able to run into any problems with it, but from reading other people's descriptions of what happened, the above seems to be the case.

Need help with reseting my phone blindly

So my screen died out, I feel the vibration and hear the alarms, but cant see anything. This happened shortly after I was sliding my keyboard in and out really fast. I think im just going to sell it off as parts on ebay but I want to make sure my data is off the device.
I was thinking of going to clockworkmod and resetting the phone, but there is this screen with the 3 androids on a skateboard and I dont remember which one gets me to recovery. So I need like a reference like a picture if anyone could take one or two for me. I also dont remember if which button is select, the track pad button?
Thanks- Johnny.
Sliding the keyboard in & out really fast? Were you doing a durability test or something? Anyway, I'm a bit confused. If your screen doesn't work, how do you see the 3 androids? That's your bootloader & if you see that then as far as I know, it's not your screen that is at issue.

I was sliding the keyboard in and out really fast for fun, but then after like 2 hours my screen started to lag, then it just blacked out. Really stupid of me, but it happened. I was trying to remember what happens when and how to get into recovery. And my screen is still black.

Hold power down as well as volume down for about 3 seconds & that will put you into your bootloader. From there there is a factory reset too. Bump volume down twice and them bump your power switch. That will start the process of a Factory Reset.

It's a case of a broken/cut flex cable. You know the ribbon like wires that connects your upper part phone to the lower part.
Same as demkantor I'm willing to buy it also. I got a broken MT4GS right now so I'm not active here(need to fix it to continue development lol) My LCD saw it's doppleganger when I drop my device. You know broken in half.

A "factory reset" isn't going to repair a cable. All it will do is format your system, cache, etc. and prepare your phone to accept another operating system. If you want to do that thru recovery to make sure..... you can volume down with power to take you back to bootloader. Once sitting at "fastboot", volume down once to highlite recovery then select with power button. Once in recovery, power down twice then select with the trackpad. Once it's run there for about a minute your system should be wiped and you're ready to return it. You've NOT installed another ROM or taken yourself back to original condition though.

I couldnt factory reset it, i kept texting myself to see if it reset and it kept ringing. I tried around 20 times :\ So instead I just put 2 step verification, used a application specific password on android and hopefully the person i sold it to doesnt try to hack it. case closed i guess.
GREAT! So you messed it up yourself, did your best to make it unusable and sold it to an unsuspecting buyer. You're on the WROOOONG website then 'dude'. That's why I'm so glad I forgot to tell you how to wipe out the system. Maybe your poor "sucker" will be able to figure it out. Hopefully he will come here. Evidently, your screen was fine???

ok ill try that. but here's the thing. whatever app i use to turn off the backlight of the soft keys. it only dims it to the lowest level and doesnt completely turn it off.
when you look at your phone in a different angle, you can still see a very small light emitting in the soft keys part even when you shut off the phone. i tried reinserting the battery hut it doesnt fix the problem.

Make a backup, do a full wipe in recovery, and reinstall the ROM you want fresh. If the propblem goes away then something is just screwy in your current ROm install and you may just have to set up a fresh install of it.

i hope your right that its just a rom problem because sometimes out of nowhere, all of a sudden when i shut off the phone, the backlights were completely gone(which is what i want to happen).
I'll post the results later. thanks.
by the way, when i used cpu spy it doesnt turn into deep sleep when the screen is off even if there is no apps running.
i left the phone for 6 hours screen off and charging. and only 8 minutes it turn into deep sleep state. the other remaining comes from my lowest speed which is 384. so im joping its just a rom problem.

Wait a minute...when you said the backlight stays on even when you shut off the phone I thought you meant like when you turn the screen off. Do you mean when you physically power off the device?
That's really screwy. If so, something is really REALLY messed up.
Try the following 3 things in this order from easiest to hardest.
1) Remove the SD card. Reboot the phone. See if the problem persists. If it goes away without the SD card, copy your files to a computer, format the SD card, and copy your files back. I give this a 10% chance of working but its quick to test it so why not try?
2) Do a full wipe. Flash a bone stock Sense ROM. Seen if the problem goes away. If it does, wipe again and install whatever you want.
3) Run a full ruu and return to completely stock. If the problem is still there your hardware is broken. If the problem goes away you will have to restart the rooting process. You will have to redo s off, redo superuser, etc. Then flat whatever ROM you want.
Try doing an full ruu back to bone stock. Reroot, and start over with a new ROM. You will have to go through the whole s off process again. But it might fix this. And form the sound of it you have somehow borked things that shouldn't have ever been touched.

Well, when the phone is off, the backlight is already gone. So its ok now. The CPU spy also states that when I turn my screen off, it turns into deep sleep. That one is fixed too. But when I charge the phone and let my screen off, it doesn't go into deep sleep but it consumes the least frequency of the processor which is 192mhz I don't know if that is normal.
I think I have a hardware problem since I sent my phone to replace its microphone flex which includes the lights coming from the buttons. I'll try to send it back to the center since it still has warranty.
Thanks. I'll update you.

Any update on this issue? My wife's phone has many screen problems, but one of the primary symptoms is that the backlight is almost always on in the lower left corner, even after removing the battery and reinserting it, before booting. When I charge it, the backlight gets brighter and I see dark pixelation across the screen. At times the screen has crapped out completely, and it usually appears dark, has some light flickering, blotching, and vertical lines. I'm wondering whether this is an LCD/backlight issue at all or another hardware issue. Don't want to buy an LCD if that won't fix anything. Some LCD/digitizer assemblies have a mic cable, though, so I'm curious about what you found out about that. Thanks

Then it seems to be a hardware issue more than a software one. However, you can try to re install the stock rom and see what happens. You can go to hboot and do a factory reset, you will lose data but it will install everything again.
Do you know how to do that?..
Power off the device
Press volume down + power
When you get to the white screen with androids, you can navigate with the volume rocker and choose with the power volume. Choose to factory reset the device and see what happens.

Nexus 5 Screen will not light up

Hey guys I've had my N5 for almost a year now but it seems to have gone kaput on me recently...
On Monday I was on a skype call, (just audio) when my phone suddenly restarted, I didn't pay much mind to it as that happened before and it would usually just cut back on, but this time, it restarted, and restarted and just didn't stop. That lead me to think its the power button being stuck so i checked it out and made sure its not being depressed and well yeah it wasn't. And soon after that the phones screen was sometimes on during the reboots and sometimes off. I knew it was rebooting because the N5 vibrates a bit when Google pops up on the loading screen in a certain way, but yeah now the screen doesn't light up at all, there's still vibrations and sounds like when I call or when I say Okay Google a few times, the LED will even light up during a call. I know the phone is "on and working" in the background but the screen doesn't light up and as such I can't touch it, any ideas and or advice friends?
bump de bump?
Possibly your backlight burnt out? Water damage?
if you are running cyanogenmod, you could be experiencing sod "sleep of death". thats when you know the phone is on and working, but the screen doesnt turn on. ive been reading lots of complaints about cm and the sod.

As the phone kept rebooting it went from seeing everything, to seeing nothing but the back light to dark, so maybe? It was just by me on my desk too so I was doubtful about the water damage but I put it in the sealed rice bag for about 24 hours just in case but still no luck.
I actually am running cyanogenmod and whenever I do have a problem I always feel that its related to CM as the phone doesn't have any physical damage...maybe I should look into that, any other ideas friends?
P.S I am using the ElementalX Kernel and UNFORTUNATELY I turned on the FAST CHARGE USB option and that makes the phone play funny with the computer, if you guys have any advice as to how I could turn off that option please do let me know

all it does is completely wipe your phone and install an older android version. flashing the factory img will do the same, except youll get the newest android version. don't use these tools, doing things the right way will be more beneficial to you. anyways, since cm is having issues, try a different rom, or just go stock.

Well i got mine through the Play Store and I did think about an RMA, I know there was that free screen replacement thing going on but the customer rep sounded like he had no idea what I was talking about. and I'm thinking its a flex cable issue as my phone hasn't incurred any damage from drops or bumps or anything since i make it a point to be stationary while using phone, but....where the sim card tray is, that "bridge" or thin piece on the bottom side toward the phone has split as a result of my bad sim card ejecting, but that was when i first obtained the phone, also there is another split, inside the phone there is a canopy above the charging port that is split but i still know that occurred long before this, and its not even an electrical piece along with the sim card bridge thing.
BUTTT yeah im afraid if I RMA they will use that as an excuse to charge me $400, even though I know it's not playing any sort of factor in my screen acting up....Is there a policy on that?

I suppose I might as well shoot for it? Is there a way to decline paying for the device if they decide that I should pay?

send back the rma? honestly, i dont know. i dont know anyone thats ever had to pay. unless its obvious that you did something, youll be fine.
So when you hold down the power button and the vol - for about 15 seconds the bootloader screen doesn't show up? If so, yeah try to RMA.
I will chat it up with one of the customer service peeps and see what they think then, and maybe even hopefully one will know about the replace anything deal

and yup Ik its in bootloader mode though because the computer beeps and tries installing drivers and what not and also because it does that single vibrate, but yeah the screen is still dark so I can't see my selections, I believe I can still actually make a selection though, just unable to see them

Check to make sure you have the newest drivers (there's a sticky in the general section with all the useful info). If you bought it from the play store see if you can get an RMA - Google seems to have a good rep with this. It wouldn't hurt to flash a factory image to erase everything either before sending it off (privacy and whatnot). If you have the newest TWRP (2.8.0.1) if you boot into recovery and you should be able to access the internal storage without having to select anything (in case there's anything there not backed up). Boot to recovery is volume down twice and power I think.

Well now that I used that tool I'm not sure if my recovery is still TWRP or if it's stock, it flashed a stock factory image I'm told, but that doesn't remove the Kernel and Recovery too does it? I wanna get it as stock as possible before I sent it out. At this point I believe it has a factory image but I can't say for sure about anything else
