[Q] Handwriting with Stylus

any1 try hand writing with a stylus? i know it sucks on the iPad, and also the Archos 101, but how is it on the Transformer? i need a tablet i can hand write on, so if you have tried it, let me know!
Capacitive touch screens and stylus support has always been relatively poor--there's just not enough precision. HTC might have licked it by adding an n-Trig digitizer to their newest 7-inch tablet (can't remember the name of the thing at the moment), but I haven't tried it myself.
Edit: Actually, here's some info: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/a-closer-look-at-the-htc-flyers-screen-and-stylus-aka-htc-scri/
If handwriting is that important to you, then you might want to consider the HTC.
yeah i would like to get the flyer, but im looking for something around 10"
today's amazon free-app is a keyboard app that supports hand-writing as input. it's call flext9
also supports voice, swype, and also a regular keyboard
try it out, it's free if you get it from amazon's app store.
or you could just try an app like genial writing with a boxwave stylus. I am using it for taking math notes at the university and my prof lectures like a machine gun.
My friend uses the ZeroStylus Pro and he says it's very good.
http://www.zerostylus.com/products-page/
I also use genial app with a boxwave stylus and it isn't bad.
Did try other cheaper stylus but boxwave is alot better, not tried zerostylus.
Itaintrite, have u compared boxwave with zerostylus?
You could try Grafitti from the market. It was brought back from the old Palm days.
I have a dagi stylus and it works relatively well. As far as apps the two I have been playing with and have found to be the best are
Handwrite
http://www.appbrain.com/app/handrite-full-handwriting-note/my.handrite.prem
and
TabNotes
http://www.appbrain.com/app/tabnotes-(trial)/com.softwareincheese.tabnotes.trial
Both still need work to be perfect for my needs but are a good start. Have also tried Maple Paint but not what im looking for.
I've been using an app called handrite with the stylus. pretty solid. its fairly new, but the dev has pushed a couple updates in the couple weeks I have had it. Should get better over the next couple months.

I just ordered a boxwave stylus...that Genie app is da bomb!
Very intuitive, and very fast...just what I've been looking for.
I'm currently writting a note taking app. I'd love to hear some input (features etc). The current offerings felt really slow and lacking features to me.
I am looking at all the styli mentioned in this thread.. boxwave, targus etc etc.
The tips on all these look rather large/broad and dont seem that good for notetaking. It would seem that some precision would be lost.. kinda like writing a note with a broad-tip magic marker.
Is there a stylus out there with a "finer" tip?... or am I getting the wrong impression?

Ok...here are my suggestions after trying about 15 of them today....
1.) Speed...no lag...it's gotta feel really snappy.
2.) The UI has to allow for QUICK writing and clicking...no stuff scattered all over 20 different menus...
3.) I WISH that there were a way to allow laying the wrist on the screen while writing....(I know ....this aint gonna happen)
4.) One thing that I had a hard time with was the ratio of writing area to what is produced....I'd like to be able to write smaller and produce fairly large characters...I kept running out of room on a few of the apps and it's hard to scroll while writing.
5.) My opinion is that Genial and handwrite were what came closest to what I wanted.
IF you want a beta tester....I'll happily apply....

Repligo Reader. It's simply the best PDF reader out there for speed and rendering, and has all sorts of annotation features.

The Dagi is the closest. The problem is that the capacitive touch screens need a large area in order to register a touch. The Dagi at least allows you to see the "point" because of its transparent end. IMHO the tip still needs to be much more flexible because you still have to hold it relatively close to the correct angle for it to work well.

Yes, this is very difficult. Especially while keeping the tracking very fast. You're talking about analyzing the type (possibly area) of touch point basically. Android's event system makes this difficult. I hope they improve this soon.

Do any of these have an OCR (or CR I guess) type of thing? I use a pen and paper for taking notes currently, and it would be awesome if I could pick up a stylus have my tablet easily transcribe the notes for me.

[Q] BEST STYLUS for hp touchpad

I was wondering did anyone find any good stylus that is compatible with the hp touchpad. This was my main reason why I got the touchpad so I can use it for note taking and sketching. I want to get a really good one for the touchpad or for any future tablets i might get in the future.
This is what I´m searching for, too. I think the Wacom Bamboo Stylus is the best you can get for capazative displays at the moment...but it´s a bit too expensive for my taste. Any other suggestions?
Sorry, I don't have much to recommend. I've wondered how a stylus would work on the Touchpad. I'm coming from the Nook Color, and from what I understand, no stylus really works well with it. I personally have some el-cheapo meritline stylii that didn't work with it at all -- I'll have to try those on the Touchpad. The HTC Flyer is supposed to have a nice stylus too, but I'm not sure if it has anything special to play nice with the Flyer hardware.
The other thing is - do you have a worthwhile note-taking or drawing app to use it with? I couldn't really find anything that seemed that great in the app catalog. I downloaded one drawing app, but it seemed a little kiddie-oriented.
Just a short info: flyer is another universe...it´s an active digitizer which is just working with special hardware...you can´t use an active digitizer on a normal capacitive screen

I got this one : Targus AMM01 , and it's ok :

There's also the Kensington one , longer, ok too :

I know in what section i am, are you? Touchpad = WebOS + uncoming Android. Im giving him a suggestion for what to use if he migrates to Android when it comes. So if you got a better suggestion, go ahead.
Till then, check this out:

k, so I have three, here's my review
1) generic rubber-tipped one - it was basically a plastic straw with a rubber bubble (hollow inside) at the end. It was ok for pointing, sucked at anything that needs a longer press since it was smooshy.
2) Dagi p501 - Works great once its held at the proper angle. The angle is not hard to hit, but once off, it feels a bit weird since it's not symmetrical.
3) Dagi p504 - GET THIS ONE. It's great, can easily write with it and its got a flexible tip, so it's always in full contact with the screen.
Caveat - the hp touchpad kinda sucks for note taking. When trying to draw a circle, it turns into more of an octagon. Maybe it's the application (Just draw, got from hp app cat) but i tried to do stuff with my viewsonic gtab and it was smooth enough to write cursive (though I had to remember how to write cursive)

Yes, that's the one... I have one of the "lite" versions on the NC. It's really good. I also have another one that's for note-taking, but you can write on the screen and it will put it inline with other text like in a notebook. Hopefully apps like this someday make their way to the TP one way or another.

Stylus

What would in your opinion be the best stylus for taking notes?

I've used the top one, it's heavy and clumsy and hard to use for extended periods. I've yet to find anything that beats your fingers for typing on screen.
well I get one off ebay, its the same thing, made from the same material, why waste 18 bucks while you can get it for 1 bucks.
I would say it does increase the accuracy, but since the screen has multipoint touch screen, you have to lift your hand in the air to take note. Its really not practical for me, I just use it to play draw something.

This happens even when you change the input mode to stylus?
Actually the stylus mode works pretty well for me.I've been using it way before it was merged in the nightly. Dees Troy who wrote the mod recommened a capacitance style and it works nice. Check his thread on rootzwiki it was only like 5$ on eBay. I had bought a more expensive one before and it was not nearly as good. Reason being the fat tip was calibrated for the tp with his digitizer. There's a whole technical reason behind it if you are interested check it out.

I actually have a stylus and they're pretty cool. Only thing is there isn't a note taking app like the notetaker HD from Apple, I can't stand Apple, but I just wish someone would make an app on that par. And besides that is the multitouch problem. You can't have your hand rest on the screen or it'll take it as an input which sucks.

Yes you still need to lift your palm, the only difference that i can see is that when you change to stylus mode, its somehow more accurate and easier to write with, but that doesn't change the fact that its still hard to write in general.
At the end of the day, using a pen and paper is so much faster, easier, and better. I try to use ezpdf to annotate lecture note, but at the end I don't use it since its really hard to write with.

I received the Wacom Bamboo Stylus as a gift and it feels great. It weighs 18.9 grams so it feels fairly natural in hand. It kind of sucks that we dont have any good Notetaking apps though. Maybe webOS does but I know that I haven't been able to find a good app in the Play Store. GoSMS has a nice smooth response to styli if you use the doodle/handwriting function so if you don't mind having your notes in a picture form, it works very well. I wish their team would release a strictly notetaking app because they definitely hit the nail on the head. Or maybe if they released their source for the handwriting plugin, someone here on the forums could build an app for notes. Anyways, good luck on the stylus situation!
Any cases out there that have a slot or somewhere to put a stylus?

Do You Think We'll See More 3D Phones?

I currently have a HTC EVO 3D (basically just because I got it BNIB for an amazing price on Kijiji) and at first I really hated the terrible viewing angles (this was a common criticism in reviews as well, so I kinda knew what I was getting into) because the colour became washed out far too quickly. Then I just started longing for a phone with an AMOLED display (for almost no wash-out from any angle).
However, once I turned on the 3D I was blown away at how well it works! Unfortunately the 3D viewing angles are VERY precise, but once you get one (there's 3 defined angles) it looks awesome. I'll admit I figured I wouldn't really use the 3D function much, but it certainly is growing on me and since I have a 3D TV and home theatre system (both of which I already had BEFORE I bought the EVO 3d) I can share all my 3D content with them and it works amazingly well!
So, my question to you guys, are you enjoying the only two 3D phones available right now? And do you think we'll be seeing more?
Ive played around with with the Evo 3d and watched a few movies on a 60 inch 3d TV. It does look cool but its not for me. Im sure we will see more 3d phones but it will be from less know phone manufacturers, the big boys are all about speed, specs and battery life now.
True...
Yea I have to agree, although LG is supposedly going to be releasing a successor to it's Optimus 3D. And I think the latter of what you mentioned is hopefully going to be the focus for most manufacturers, because I think most people are fairly content with the speed for now, they just want phones that last longer.
However, it terms of 3D, I think it would be really epic to see 3D projected holograms in the near future!
I wish they'd make more phones with some sturdiness feeling like the Evo 3D and stop with this skinny paper thin crap, the exception being the One S, that's just beautiful.
I Agree!
Ya! I must admit, the first time I handled my HTC EVO 3D, I was surprised at how heavy it was (I mean for a phone, obviously it's not that bed, but this is relativity), but then I took off the back cover and I could tell that there's actual metal parts and the plastic they use is at least VERY STURDY plastic.
In terms of the One S, I definitely like the Micro Arc Oxidization on the ceramic back that they use.
Anyway, on-topic I'm also surprised at how well the 3D works, for the VERY FIRST iteration of 3D implemented on phones (I think LG was first, but both of the phones came out the same year and therefore I consider them as the first wave or "iteration")!
3d phones ae FAIL!
Disagree for being a fail. It just there isn't enough 3D content.

Right, I think so. There is another Glasses free 3D Mobile named ZP200 from China. I have played, feeling so so..
Well lets take a look at the facts. There are medical studies that show that spending a long time looking at 3d images can lead to things like vision, balance problems and headaches. So while there may be a few devices out here and there they will never be more then a few nor will they become main stream.
I'll Keep That Quote!

I think that statement may come back to bite you lol, well maybe not, but I think you'll see how wrong you are in the future! idk maybe I'm just overly optimistic but I think 3D is one of the best ways to immerse people in virtual content and so whether or not we stick with stereoscopic/auto-stereoscopic is beside the point and therefore I realize some people have issues viewing current content but as with almost all of technology, the bugs get worked out eventually (although presently I find there are almost none, the main hiderance is a lack of properly filmed 3D content).

I think that in reality it is just a fad that will probably pass by however i personally would like to see more development there because the advance in technology is good even if it doesn't end up in the phones themselves

ya, as much as I hate to say it, I think it is kind of a fad as well, especially with 4K on the horizon, people may opt for sharper pictures over the immersion (although personally I think the latter provides a MUCH better feel in terms of theatre enjoyment) but I too would love to see more advancements in the technology. It also depends on how it is marketed, because if people start really enjoying 3D then obviously we'll see more content and products in 3D. However, most people don't want 3D products unless they're actually done properly, so it's kinda a fine balance right now that can tip either way, with the help of a small, yet strong enough, push.

i think that we will see more 3d phones, but i'm not sure whether we need this technique on a phone or tablet. it's obvious, that it is only a funny gimmick!
Hopefully when the technology gets a little less... gimpy.
The way it is now, it kinda reminds me of the LG (I think) that had the built-in projector. "Think we will see more phones with projectors?"
Phone with projector plus 4d capability...imagine if that happens!

Thoughts on the Moto gamepad

Hello everyone,
I've read some reviews on the gamepad mod, and I'd like to know if any of you had bought it.
I'd use it in public transportation so a cheap bluetooth gamepad like this one https://img.tvc-mall.com/uploads/details/84020147A-1.jpg is too big.
The moto gamepad seems like a good/ok piece of hardware, but the price is a little hard to swallow. Is it worth it in your opinion?
Thank you for your replies.

I have gamepad in my possesion, and i can tell you'll be fascinated about how *well* it works, espacially in games. It just feels like you're playing on a PSP.
Your Moto Z wont fall outta the mod, because the gamepad holds the phone tight. I also like the little red lights an the shoulder buttons, which could be useful for you at night. It's well luminated. The battery holds for a whole day and can be charged by the c-port. This will also charge your phone.
The only contra i could find is the support in games: Most of the "good" gamepad games are powered by Gameloft. I dislike 80% of the games that are listed in the gamepad-app (imo), but it's only a matter of time to the devolopers to "pick-up" the support for the moto gamepad.
In conclusion: A nice gamepad to play games on, but the selection of the games are bitter at the moment.
I hope i helped you with this post!
I have it. Used it for few weeks for Tony Hawk on PSP emulator. It took me few hours to remember Tony Hawk and get used to controller. I think price (I payed 50$) is right, since it feels very well built and form factor is quite compact (doesn't add width of the phone only ~doubles thickness and add few centimeters in height). Only downside of gamepad is that it's a bit too small for long gaming sessions (3hours+) - after few hours non-stop playing you can feel a bit in your thumbs because they are bent all the time.
Nowadays I only play rhythm games on my phone so controller is not as useful.
I would recommend it to anyone who is into emulator gaming and plays mostly games which work great on joystick.
Thank you for your replies. Good to know that the build quality is solid.
Regarding the games available for it I don't really care as I'd mainly use it for emulator gaming. (I don't have the cash right now for the Switch )
So I think I'm gonna wait a little for the price to drop, it's 90€ in france right now, and not a lot less on ebay
I have one. It´s very cool, but the games that I wish to play are´t avaliable on Moto Game Explorer, like nba2k, pes or fifa...
And Like Bomberlt said: The thumbs kind hurt after a while playing.
