any1 try hand writing with a stylus? i know it sucks on the iPad, and also the Archos 101, but how is it on the Transformer? i need a tablet i can hand write on, so if you have tried it, let me know!
Capacitive touch screens and stylus support has always been relatively poor--there's just not enough precision. HTC might have licked it by adding an n-Trig digitizer to their newest 7-inch tablet (can't remember the name of the thing at the moment), but I haven't tried it myself.
Edit: Actually, here's some info: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/a-closer-look-at-the-htc-flyers-screen-and-stylus-aka-htc-scri/
If handwriting is that important to you, then you might want to consider the HTC.
yeah i would like to get the flyer, but im looking for something around 10"
today's amazon free-app is a keyboard app that supports hand-writing as input. it's call flext9
also supports voice, swype, and also a regular keyboard
try it out, it's free if you get it from amazon's app store.
or you could just try an app like genial writing with a boxwave stylus. I am using it for taking math notes at the university and my prof lectures like a machine gun.
My friend uses the ZeroStylus Pro and he says it's very good.
http://www.zerostylus.com/products-page/
I also use genial app with a boxwave stylus and it isn't bad.
Did try other cheaper stylus but boxwave is alot better, not tried zerostylus.
Itaintrite, have u compared boxwave with zerostylus?
You could try Grafitti from the market. It was brought back from the old Palm days.
I have a dagi stylus and it works relatively well. As far as apps the two I have been playing with and have found to be the best are
Handwrite
http://www.appbrain.com/app/handrite-full-handwriting-note/my.handrite.prem
and
TabNotes
http://www.appbrain.com/app/tabnotes-(trial)/com.softwareincheese.tabnotes.trial
Both still need work to be perfect for my needs but are a good start. Have also tried Maple Paint but not what im looking for.
I've been using an app called handrite with the stylus. pretty solid. its fairly new, but the dev has pushed a couple updates in the couple weeks I have had it. Should get better over the next couple months.

I just ordered a boxwave stylus...that Genie app is da bomb!
Very intuitive, and very fast...just what I've been looking for.
I'm currently writting a note taking app. I'd love to hear some input (features etc). The current offerings felt really slow and lacking features to me.
I am looking at all the styli mentioned in this thread.. boxwave, targus etc etc.
The tips on all these look rather large/broad and dont seem that good for notetaking. It would seem that some precision would be lost.. kinda like writing a note with a broad-tip magic marker.
Is there a stylus out there with a "finer" tip?... or am I getting the wrong impression?

Ok...here are my suggestions after trying about 15 of them today....
1.) Speed...no lag...it's gotta feel really snappy.
2.) The UI has to allow for QUICK writing and clicking...no stuff scattered all over 20 different menus...
3.) I WISH that there were a way to allow laying the wrist on the screen while writing....(I know ....this aint gonna happen)
4.) One thing that I had a hard time with was the ratio of writing area to what is produced....I'd like to be able to write smaller and produce fairly large characters...I kept running out of room on a few of the apps and it's hard to scroll while writing.
5.) My opinion is that Genial and handwrite were what came closest to what I wanted.
IF you want a beta tester....I'll happily apply....

The Dagi is the closest. The problem is that the capacitive touch screens need a large area in order to register a touch. The Dagi at least allows you to see the "point" because of its transparent end. IMHO the tip still needs to be much more flexible because you still have to hold it relatively close to the correct angle for it to work well.

Yes, this is very difficult. Especially while keeping the tracking very fast. You're talking about analyzing the type (possibly area) of touch point basically. Android's event system makes this difficult. I hope they improve this soon.

Do any of these have an OCR (or CR I guess) type of thing? I use a pen and paper for taking notes currently, and it would be awesome if I could pick up a stylus have my tablet easily transcribe the notes for me.

Hey guys, I am looking into picking up the Asus Transformer...when it becomes available in the US... and had a question.
I was really wanting an application for it like Microsoft OneNote, which allows you to manage your schoolwork very easily. Pretty much a notebook with tabs for different sections and other neat things. It lets you type, and also draw, within the same note. Has anyone found a app for the tablet similar to this? As I will be using this for lots of note taking in Grad. school and was hoping I could find something that would work well for me. Thx in advance

MobileNoter has worked great for me on my Nexus, and I believe the developer is working on a tabley/HC version to be released soon. I'm crossing my fingers for inking/drawing support, as I'm needing a good OneNote solution for the transformer when it comes out in the US. Their iPad version looks pretty slick, hopefully we get something similar.
I did take a look at MobileNoter, but it appears to only be able to view notes that were created using OneNote. I'm looking to create the notes on the tablet, hopefully that functionality is out there.
Take a look at evernote, andoird, web app, desktop, emailable, bookmarklets
not many ways left to send data into a note system
I often photograph the flip chart pages after presentations at work.
Evernote is my favorite.

Evernote and Mobilenoter are not substitutes for Onenote
I used Onenote extensively about 6 years ago on my old school tablet, it is truly a great product. The other do not compare. Nothing is better for school work, taking notes, and organization. As soon as Onenote comes out on Android, with pen input, I will be the first to buy. Until then tablets are a nice toy.

there are lots of good note taking apps out there but none of them can begin to compare to onenote when it comes to organization of notes
I wouldn't ever want to try to write notes on a capacitive screen though so I'm sticking with a windows tablet with a wacom active digitizer

I like the other programs...Evernote and the like....but I need the ability to "write." Not trying to be a hater, and I'm certainly not a MS-phile, but Onenote is a great product, and combined with pen input, there is no competitor. Why is the capacitive screen so bad for writing? There exists pens for it. I have not had a change to test this out. Is it too cumbersome?

This is why I also have an HP Touchsmart TM2 tablet with a wacom digitizer. I bought this for school mainly to use onenote and use e-textbooks. However, It is still heavy and doesn't have the best battery life so I am also picking up a Transformer.
However, I found myself using this less and less as it was so much faster to grab a pen and paper than to start Windows 7.
I don't think we are going to see anything that is par with Onenote but I think there are a few decent substitutes mentioned that are good for quick notes on a device that is more readily available.

evernote is certainly an excellent program. I still don't think it compares to onenote but it does have a lot to offer.
As for the capacitive pen vs. active digitizer, it's really hard to explain if you haven't used one. Taking notes with a capacitive pen is certainly do-able but it's just not ideal. A capacitive pen is, of course, not as accurate. that much is given, but there are other things that make an active digitizer just that much better. One of the most important things, as far as I'm concerned, is pressure sensitivity. If you want to do any sort of art, it's basically necessary, but even just for note taking it makes a big difference. It makes your writing just look and feel so much more natural. This is impossible with a capacitive pen. Another key point for me is that, with an active digitizer, you can have buttons on the pen for things. I have right click and alt+tab buttons on the side of my pen(customizable of course) and, most importantly, an eraser button on the back. Searching through menus to find a eraser is such a pain. Just flipping over the pen and erasing the same way you would with an actual pencil is great. This, again, is impossible with a capacitive pen. Yet another great feature is that the active digitizer is the fact that it knows where the pen is, even when it's not touching the screen(within a certain distance of course). This means that you can do mouse-overs and things like that. This isn't nearly as important with android as it is window, but still it's pretty cool. Once again, impossible with a capacitive pen.
I'm sure that there are other features that make active digitizers better but I've rambled on enough already.
Ahhh. I understand. Everything you mentioned above is my experience with pen input i.e. the pressure sensitivity, eraser, multiple buttons. I am going to assume then that capacitive screens are not able to do that, too bad. These were important features that pulled me into the "writing" experience.
How about a tablet wish list.....
1) instant on ability
2) Onenote
3) active digitizer
4) wifi
5) long battery life 7-10 hours
6) thin, convenient to carry.
Just an FYI, Evernote has just received a major update. Now includes a lot of features that are not available on iOS.

I was wondering did anyone find any good stylus that is compatible with the hp touchpad. This was my main reason why I got the touchpad so I can use it for note taking and sketching. I want to get a really good one for the touchpad or for any future tablets i might get in the future.
This is what I´m searching for, too. I think the Wacom Bamboo Stylus is the best you can get for capazative displays at the moment...but it´s a bit too expensive for my taste. Any other suggestions?
Sorry, I don't have much to recommend. I've wondered how a stylus would work on the Touchpad. I'm coming from the Nook Color, and from what I understand, no stylus really works well with it. I personally have some el-cheapo meritline stylii that didn't work with it at all -- I'll have to try those on the Touchpad. The HTC Flyer is supposed to have a nice stylus too, but I'm not sure if it has anything special to play nice with the Flyer hardware.
The other thing is - do you have a worthwhile note-taking or drawing app to use it with? I couldn't really find anything that seemed that great in the app catalog. I downloaded one drawing app, but it seemed a little kiddie-oriented.
Just a short info: flyer is another universe...it´s an active digitizer which is just working with special hardware...you can´t use an active digitizer on a normal capacitive screen

Till then, check this out:

k, so I have three, here's my review
1) generic rubber-tipped one - it was basically a plastic straw with a rubber bubble (hollow inside) at the end. It was ok for pointing, sucked at anything that needs a longer press since it was smooshy.
2) Dagi p501 - Works great once its held at the proper angle. The angle is not hard to hit, but once off, it feels a bit weird since it's not symmetrical.
3) Dagi p504 - GET THIS ONE. It's great, can easily write with it and its got a flexible tip, so it's always in full contact with the screen.
Caveat - the hp touchpad kinda sucks for note taking. When trying to draw a circle, it turns into more of an octagon. Maybe it's the application (Just draw, got from hp app cat) but i tried to do stuff with my viewsonic gtab and it was smooth enough to write cursive (though I had to remember how to write cursive)

Yes, that's the one... I have one of the "lite" versions on the NC. It's really good. I also have another one that's for note-taking, but you can write on the screen and it will put it inline with other text like in a notebook. Hopefully apps like this someday make their way to the TP one way or another.
I purchased a Galaxy Tab™ Conductive Stylus from the Samsung website, even though their site said it wouldn't work with the GT 8.9 for some reason. As far as I can tell, there isn't much difference in this stylus and all other conductive styluses (styli?). It behaves just like a finger, allowing you to select with the tip of the stylus. The tip is rounded and fat which makes it difficult for fine writing in notepad type apps. I have practiced for a few days and have become fairly proficient at using the stylus to underline in textbooks and word documents. It's also good for signing documents with the right app.
Overall I'm happy with the purchase. The stylus has a good weight and feels like a quality product. I'd definitely buy the stylus again, despite being a few dollars more than the other top quality styluses made by other companies.
I heard that drawing or writing on the tab is pretty abysmal due on the fact that the screen has such a low sensitivity. (like the 10.1)
How is your experience with this? Can you write or draw reallysmall and precise?

I wouldn't say it's abysmal. I knew I wasn't getting a WACOM digitizer like I have on my tablet PC, or a stylus as good as the Lenovo android tablet but it does a decent job for what I wanted it for, which is marking up pdf files and maybe signing documents in the future. I added a capture of my handwriting taken at writing normal speed with no special care taken to be neat. You must subtract for my poor handwriting and the fact that the app I used doesn't have very good ignorance of a hand laying down, so my hand wasn't balanced on a flat surface as is the case when normally writing.
thanks for the answer!
will be getting a stylus anyhow so i guess i will see how its like
i just bought a stylus and i must say the screen sensitivity issue is pretty bad.
i tried the stylus with my NexusOne and it produced far better results.
the samsung screen seems slow and unresponsive to handwriting
Any chance it's your ICS ROM? I'm on Overcome ROM and it works pretty well. My wife even decided she liked the stylus with her 10.1 on Task's ROM and I ordered another from amazon.
tried it with both roms.
it just seems laggy and slow. it doesn't get small circles like "e" or "l"
but i messed around in the build.prop and it got a little better. still not what i wanted it to be though...
I agree, it's a bummer because I believe the size is perfect for a small sketchpad :/
If you want to take written notes thought download the ASUS Supernote app, you can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204931
i would advise everyone to use freenote.
so far its the most complete note taking app i found!
Thanks for the feedback.
I´m in love with this smaller size, but since I discovered how much better the notetaking thingy seems to be with the 10.1" and TouchScreenTune, and given that the dev didn´t offer many hopes at all for the 8.9", I´m torn again between these 2 devices.
Could you please clarify if the "sensitivity issue" is bad enough to affect the proper selection/highlighting of text?
Cheers

nah selecting highlighting is no problem what soever. it is very precise its just when you loop you "L" or "O" that is sometimes doesn't detect it. but for light usage its fine. annotating or highlighting pdf works a treat.

Thanks mate, that was very helpful.
I think the sensitivity is great. I use SuperNote on my 8.9 all the time for taking notes. No issues whatsoever and better than many other tablets I tried. Writing with a conductive stylus is smooth (not broken) and easy. Of course the resolution isn't down to what you could do with pen and paper, but that's a fundamental limitation that most all tablets share except for those that are designed with some sort of active alternative. The touchscreens have to be calibrated to pick up our fat fingers so they are relatively coarse. It's really a compromise so you don't have to have a stylus to navigate the interface like the older generation of PDAs used. I think the 8.9 is great with something like SuperNote that can take your writing and shrink it down to a decent size and align it on a line. You should really check this app out if your interested in taking notes because it is really really cool. It's only distributed on asus tablets, but the apk is floating around.
What would in your opinion be the best stylus for taking notes?
these two have caught my eye has anyone used them?

I've used the top one, it's heavy and clumsy and hard to use for extended periods. I've yet to find anything that beats your fingers for typing on screen.
well I get one off ebay, its the same thing, made from the same material, why waste 18 bucks while you can get it for 1 bucks.
I would say it does increase the accuracy, but since the screen has multipoint touch screen, you have to lift your hand in the air to take note. Its really not practical for me, I just use it to play draw something.

This happens even when you change the input mode to stylus?
Actually the stylus mode works pretty well for me.I've been using it way before it was merged in the nightly. Dees Troy who wrote the mod recommened a capacitance style and it works nice. Check his thread on rootzwiki it was only like 5$ on eBay. I had bought a more expensive one before and it was not nearly as good. Reason being the fat tip was calibrated for the tp with his digitizer. There's a whole technical reason behind it if you are interested check it out.

I actually have a stylus and they're pretty cool. Only thing is there isn't a note taking app like the notetaker HD from Apple, I can't stand Apple, but I just wish someone would make an app on that par. And besides that is the multitouch problem. You can't have your hand rest on the screen or it'll take it as an input which sucks.

Yes you still need to lift your palm, the only difference that i can see is that when you change to stylus mode, its somehow more accurate and easier to write with, but that doesn't change the fact that its still hard to write in general.
At the end of the day, using a pen and paper is so much faster, easier, and better. I try to use ezpdf to annotate lecture note, but at the end I don't use it since its really hard to write with.

I received the Wacom Bamboo Stylus as a gift and it feels great. It weighs 18.9 grams so it feels fairly natural in hand. It kind of sucks that we dont have any good Notetaking apps though. Maybe webOS does but I know that I haven't been able to find a good app in the Play Store. GoSMS has a nice smooth response to styli if you use the doodle/handwriting function so if you don't mind having your notes in a picture form, it works very well. I wish their team would release a strictly notetaking app because they definitely hit the nail on the head. Or maybe if they released their source for the handwriting plugin, someone here on the forums could build an app for notes. Anyways, good luck on the stylus situation!
Any cases out there that have a slot or somewhere to put a stylus?

This is my Tapatalk 2 signature. Rockin' the app on my Nook Color running ICS 4.0.4, courtesy of Dalingrin, Fattire, and our other beloved XDA weenies (nemith, keyodi, arcee, hacdan, etc.)
So after giving this some thought this last week I decided to stick with the infinity over trading in for the Note 10.1. I just think the Infinity is superior product. I benchmark, stock and not rooted, at about 13,000 and I/O is and acceptable 450.
Obviously the big "breath taking" feature of the note is the S- Pen and in my opinion the biggest reason I might have had tablet envy. The pen is something that I can use on a daily basis for work since I take so many notes. I just can't get over the plastic, slow up dates from Samsung and no FHD screen. Also, the addition of the keyboard doc lets you take the Infinity to whole different level. I have set out to see if I can capture the "pen experience" in the Infinity and this is what I have found so far. I hope the rest of you will share ideas and experiences as well.
Stylus: I have tried several since I had a Asus Prime and found most not to be sufficient for my needs. The cheap ones are surely cheap and wear out quickly. Some even leave a residue behind on the screen. After several tries I have found the Adonit Jot Pro to be the most accurate and best all around for my needs. It works well when swiping the screen ( I only use it for that when I am using the jot pro to write with) and gives clear translation of what I write without skipping. I will probably order some extra discs right away since I can see that being a potential issue and could shut me down using until replacements arrive. One thing I do not like about the jot pro stylus is I wish they would have put one more revolution of threads on the cap. It has fallen off once and having the tip exposed while while carrying around could damage the disc. So be careful to make sure it is not cross threaded and put back in place securely.
Screen Protector: I had the Zagg protector but it is much to sticky to use with the jot stylus. I do not think it works well with any of them personally. I do not have a screen protector on my screen currently but have ordered and should recieve Monday clear Acaseview screen protector that was recommended in another post. I will update when I have installed and used
Software/ Apps: I am mainly using SuperNote to take my notes. It functions really well to take notes on the fly. I have several note books setup for various topics. I have also setup a notebook that has forms in it that use regularly and usually fill out using paper and pen. I scanned an image of each form and inserted them into a page in Supernote. When I go to fill them out I simply use the insert annotation feature and "bingo" I have a non paper version of the form that I can archive and retrieve at any time.
One challenge of Supernote is that it is not too strong on export natively. You can either export to an .SNE file which can be read by nothing but supernote or share via email or other apps. There is no .pdf function built in which would be great if ASUS would update this functionality. My solution to this is to share everything to Evernote where you can pretty much do anything you want to with the information at that point. The possibilities are endless. By using the recent apps list it is very easy to switch between both and if you use overskreen as a browser you get that placebo effect of multi tasking ( ok, maybe not.)
Another useful program to share to is scan to pdf and you can skip Evernote altogether.
On a side note I found it interesting that the day the Samsung was launched the ICS+ browser and google release a beta that allowed you to write your search criteria that was converted to text in the search box.
These are just a few ideas that I have come up with in just a few days. I am happily taking notes on my infinity and my eyes love me for full HD. I am sure there is more out there and more to come. I look forward to learning more from those of you that care to share what you have come up with.
Nice post, and great to see what you've come up with. I am still in doubt about using a screen protector (not so much for the protection, but for the glare reduction), so I'll keep an eye on what you think of your soon-to-come addition. I do not take notes that religiously -- that's not true, to be honest; I take notes all the times, but on paper next to my 700 -- so I'll have to remind me to give Overskreen and SuperNote a whirl.
Update to Screen Protector
An update that the acaseview screen protector works great with the adonit jot pro stylus. Pen moves just as freely as if there was not a screen protector on and recognition of hand writing is great. The screen protector fits the tf700 perfectly and seems to be high quality. Here is the amazon link to the version I purchased.

How do you deal with your palm messing things up? I assume with the Note that wouldn't be a problem since the stylus isn't capacitive.
I'd have to recommend the sensu brush or the truglide stylus.

I've only had mine for a couple weeks but it really is the best I've used. The apps are somewhat limited, but that will all change sooner or later. For now, I'm loving the Sensu Brush and Photoshop Touch.

Maybe it is my writing style but I seem to not have a problem with my palm "messing things up"

I will have to give the sensu a try. I looked at the truglide but passed because it was so much shorter than a regular pen. I see now that they do offer a full size stylus so it may work great as well.
Agree for pen part, but the true strength to my surprise on galaxy note is speed and stability. I have encountered only a single crush after 30 to 40 hours of use. As stable as iOS perhaps better. But I do miss hd resolution.
