Hey guys,
Quick question, I hope it's not redundant but I looked around and didn't see a similar thread. I just rooted my Galaxy Note i717 using Odin and have installed CWM Recovery. The main reason I wanted to root was to overclock my phone slightly. My question is, what is the best app for over clocking the stock ROM and what are some safe values. I've seen some extremes such as a max of 1900+ and a min of 350 ish, I know that's bad for battery life though. I was thinking around 1600-1700 max and a min of 250 ish. I'd like to have better performance but I dont want suckish battery life, preferably still a day on a charge. But i'm new to all this and really have no clue.
Thanks!
Set cpu, no frills, antutu, CPU tuner, they all get the job done in my opinion

cpu tuner is the best, set cpu will unstable your phone,i am a galaxy 551 and xperia x8 owner, cpu tuner gives me the best result..and also no frils is ok..
Ok cool. So I have setCPU now. And apparently the max values have already been acheived. Does this mean I need to have a custom ROM to go over the stock 1500 mhz?

Shyamjptpm is correct, not all the ROM support cpu overclock, when choosing a ROM you need to search for a custom ROM where is specified that support overclock, then I dont know your android phone but there's also a good chance that no ROMs present the overclock feature.

I would like to know if there is a future with this phone.
Currently there are only 2 ROMs working (one of them, the author closed the thread)
I've spent at least one month fixing all the issues of this phone, and by the looks of it it's not quite popular here in USA
I will appreciate responses, since I know that overclocking can give a HUGE boost of speed.
I am thinking in returning my phone and hopefully getting the LG 2GX (Optimus 2X)
Has anybody overclocked their Samsung Galaxy S 4G?

In the defence of the person who built the ROM your talking about, he did not close the thread... a moderator did.
overclocking is currently not an option for this device and only time will tell if it will be.
as for ROMs, Krylon360 of Team Whiskey will be developing more ROMs soon as he is waiting on getting a device to work with.
the LG looks to be a good device... has many features that are better than the sgs4g so i would think its a decent switch. but for me im waiting for july... the HTC and sgsII will be be out by that time and I can choose the cream of the crop.

Any idea when it will be released?
And what price it will have?
If the phone costs around $600, I would buy it
Anything over it I'd guess it's overpriced.
the one thing that I DO NOT LIKE about the Galaxy S 4G is the lack of Flash for the camera
I'd say for a $500 device adding a $10 flash somewhere in the phone would be a good idea

When setting Profiles,
Do you have all of them default to "Charging"?
For scaling do you have them default to "Conservative"?
Do you leave all the Min at default 100000?
Do you leave all the priorities set at default 50?

A few comments.
1) Some SG4G's don't like 1.3 gig. I'm finding that at 1.2 gig at a high and 200 meg at the low, it's the most stable...at least for my particular unit. Your mileage may vary.
2) I'm using the "Temp >" profiles for all the settings.
3) I suspect that the reason for why it's wonky for some and works great for others is due to the fact that there isn't a true overclock kernel for it. We're taking potluck as to whether it works or not.
-Steve
I would take a word of advice from Krylon. The Kernel that is on our phones is not set up for this to work correctly. The app may support our phone but, our kernel doesn't yet.
I wouldn't recommend doing this. Wait for a compatible Kernel. It will happen but when your phone gets hotter than it was meant to, things on the mother board get loose and you have a very expensive paper weight.
Secondly, quad scores aren't that accurate. Meaning a single piece of code can tell the quadrant app to read higher than its actually running. The phone may run a little faster but its not what it will be with VooDoo lagfix.
This phone should get a true quad score in the mid 900's stock. With the right kernel, and voodoo lag fix (ext4) this phone should get around 1750-1850. That is without overclocking at all. it will have better battery and you won't overheat your phone .

I thought that Voodoo lagfix wasn't applicable in the SG4G because of the fact that the SG4G doesn't use an abnormal file structure. Or am I wrong?

Just be careful when overclocking. Don't overclock too high. It can cause issues and if you have set on boot checked, it can a real pain if you set it too high. I usually don't go any higher than 1200 mhz.

coredroid is good
The newest version of Coredroid (v.8.1) allows for a 2ghz overclock! be careful tho, as running the processor that fast WILL make the phone very hot! and drain your battery. If for some reason tho you need the performance, its there.

All CPU's are different. Some phones will have no problem running at 1.6ghz. Some will. It's a trial and error thing.
If you are worried, start conservative and work your way up.
would you say that overclocking your phone is worth it? i know that it can really improve the performance of the phone... but it greatly decreases the battery life... and vice versa u can lower it and increase bat life n lower performance. im looking at opinions also thanks for the reply!!

I personally have the Infusion kernel running on my phone, which allows me to OC my device, but I don't want to. I've come across no normal instance when I've found that I needed the extra power. I mainly wanted it so that I could undervolt (UV) which improves battery life.
Adding a custom ROM and also adding voodoo (most ROM's have voodoo) will increase the performance of your phone.

Launcher Pro is a homescreen alternative. You can change things up, add different transition effects.
For instance, my homescreen is attached.

Mikey passed out 1-2 MIUI builds as a proof of concept on IRC a while back, but it took the existing problems with CM7 (MIUI is layered over CM7) and added new ones, so it's on hold until more of the issues with base CM7 get fixed.

There's no way you took your device to 1.8 - our devices can't go past 1.6 without overclocking the system bus, and the system bus does NOT like to overclock. The best anyone has done was around 1664 MHz and it was unstable as hell for a lot of people.
Some versions of Infusion reported operating at 1.8, but that's because bedwa made some mistakes in his PLL calculations - he thought those settings would run the CPU at 1.8 but they actually ran it at around 1.55

Hi,
having registered here some time ago i've been reading many threads about custom ROMs and the kernels used. Many of them seem to support overclocking your phones CPU. The thing i'm wondering about is that there's kernels which actually overclock your CPU to double the speed its CPU is supposed to be running on (!!), giving the CPU some more voltage i believe.
Actually i'm a bit sceptical about how setting the CPU to such sick frequencies has a bad effect on the CPU's lifetime. The way i understood the problem with clocking the CPU high is always the heat development, meaning without proper cooling the CPU will simply "melt away" (at least that's how it is on desktop computers). Of course, CPU's on smartphones are not cooled or anything. Now that there seem to be many people here, developpers or not, who got deeper into the hardware, probably already opened up a phone, or have some experience with the long term consequences of overclocking.
So my final question is: What is safe and what is not? I saw for the Galaxy 3 for example exist different kernels, some non-overlock kernels, as some kernels only doing limited overclocking up to 800 MHz (which seems to be the most healthy option to me), but also some kernels overclocking up to 1300 MHz, which as i said seems kinda sick to me. Well i bet there's someone out there with a bit more experience than me regarding this so i'd be thankful for any answer.
I believe its safe as long as you dont keep the phone at high overclocked spds all the time. Besides, this chips are designed to last 5 years at least so if you overclock and shorten its life, you would have already changed your phone. In short, dont worry, just dont leave your phone at above 1000mhz all the time

You got a point there hehe. Technical progress is moving in light speed. Anyway, i want to make my phone last as long as possible of course. But it's true, with CPU stepping it won't run on the highest frequency the whole time, even if overclocked, so i guess that overheating won't be an issue.
The only time i overclock is when im playing 3d games. Other times mine is 700mhz at most

You will notice a difference in speed and responsiveness! You can always try and if you don't think that it is worth the slightly reduced battery life you can always revert to stock! ( i'm running IC 5.11 on 1.5 GHz and i get 1.5 day with moderate to heavy usage ). Don't worry it is safe as the CPU of the sensation is meant to run at 1.5 GHz ( like the sensation XE )!
