16 GB or 32 GB?

I've been seeing differing stories about the size of storage that will come in the AT&T version if the XL. Haven't seen any info on AT&T's website. Anyone know the true story? It's bad enough there's no expansion.

as far as I am aware, the AT&T One X is coming in 16gb. Which upsets me. I was hoping to replace my iPod with it. But I have more than 16gb of music.

Pretty upset myself. I understand changing the processor due to LTE compatibility, but don't see the need to decrease the storage size, especially considering there's no expansion slot. It's the one thing that's turning me off to getting it.

I'm considering getting a Vivid and seeing what's available in the fall. I have another upgrade coming up in October. If it's the same old bull**** with At$t at that time I will most likely look at TMobile.

From what I've heard, it looks like it will be 16GB. Add to the fact that the ATT version will not have Tegra 3 and I have decided to get an unlocked HTC One X as I already have 2 LTE devices. The fact that it is a quadband 3G phone wells my eyes with joy remembering the old Win-Mo days of buying the HTC TyTN and TyTn II which had 850/1900 3G built in without ATT meddling.

I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T released a 16GB AND a 32GB version a month or so from each other. Kind of like a reversed situation with the 16GB Galaxy Nexus coming to Verizon.

Actually, the One X has 32GB. The One XL only has 16GB.

We know the difference. Just like we know the One X is what's going to be in the UK, and the one XL will be the AT&T version. IF it's going to be differentiated.
And every trustworth news source I've seen so far that has posted the specs has quoted it at 16GB... keep in mind you should look for specs a day or two after it was released, since the market is flooded with confusion about which is which.
also to the dude w/ 3 phones, 2 lte... WHY do you need so many phones? share with the less fortunate.

There's still a mysterious HTC Totem/Tahiti that is yet to be revealed.

Sigh I was waiting for this phone but 16gb w/ no microSD slot is just too small and unusable for me. I guess I'll wait for Galaxy S3 =( or Skyrocket HD if it ever comes out...

Well how about this to further complicate things and **** AT&T customers off more. According to this article, the Sprint version of the One X will also come with only 16 GB of storage space, but WILL have an expansion slot. Really? What the hell happened to simplicity with one phone?
Next week I will be going to the invitation only HTC Sprint event, where we hope to see the new version of the HTC One X that Sprint has renamed the HTC EVO One.
Android Central has brought us some pre-event information regarding the changed specifications for the new version HTC One X. The HTC EVO One is different in few ways that I believe may seriously effect the performance in comparison to the HTC One X.
The same 4.7 inch, 720p Amoled screen will be on the HTC EVO One but the changes come in with the 1.5 dual-core Krait processor, 2650mah non-removal battery, 16GB internal memory with a microSD card slot.

just curious but why would anyone need more than 16 gbs? i've uploaded like 17gb of music to google music and htc is giving you 25 gb from dropbox in which to upload pictures and videos too (which you can see similarly to google music).
i have a note with 16 built in and a 32 removable but looking at the settings right now and ignoring the 29gb i have free on the card, i have 8.76gb free combined between system and "usb" storage (don't ask me why it's labeled that).
so from total os, formatting, loads of apps (71 apps, widgets don't show), pictures (over 200), and whatever else i missed, i still have over 8gbs. i guess my point is, quit downloading porn people. lol, kidding, but i think 16 inside is fine.

Tell yourself that as you prep for your next round trip cross country flight. 32GB on a flagship 2012 product should have been a no brainer regardless of the model. Since it wasn't, you'll have to decided what music you want to dump in order to fit more movies on-board.

Quite true, and keep in mind that NAND backups, especially when you have multiple backups for different ROMs take up quite a LOT of space. Add that to HD videos, movies, high-resolution pictures, music, GPS map files, and that 16GB starts to look pretty damn small really damn fast lol. Then you think "Oh that's fine, I'll just take this MicroSDHC car....oh my God no..." So you pause for a moment and then you might think "Hey at least I have dropbox and a massive amount of files there!" but AT&T is currently doing their best (or worst) to get rid of people that have their unlimited data plan. And even then, after 3-5GB of used bandwidth, you're still on badly throttled speeds until your next billing cycle begins.
So how far can you honestly expect to get with 16GB of memory that is not expandable? Once you eat up your 2GB or 3GB of data, you're $#%@!&, especially if you're in a place where you have no computer access to retrieve files - which would be annoying to have to do anyway. And especially if you're on LTE so the bandwidth flies that much faster. If by some chance you ARE on unlimited data, enjoy downloading and swapping out 200MB of MP3 files or a 500MB movie or a 400+MB backup from your dropbox with heavily throttled speeds. So in the end you're @$#&^* again lol.
I hate to say it, because I was waiting for this device, but the lack of a storage expansion absolutely kills this for me. Add to that the non-removable battery and it's just not worth the money. Yes, there are absolutely amazing features on this device, the screen, the S4, the camera, the unified body like my Inspire - but there are certain deal-breakers that just ruin the entire experience and unfortunately, the One XL for AT&T has two of them.

Man, I am sick of reading posts like this.
Google music is fine for cloud storage IF you live in the U.S. In Canada we will be stuck with the XL an one S, both only 16gb.
I'm personaly waiting until the fall to see if HTC figures out their failure, if they want iphone features like no expandable storage and a non emovable battery then offer different storage options like Apple does.
If the one S and X / XL came in 16,32 and 64gb options, they'd sell waaaaaaay more.
If HTC wants to stick with low storage than my next phone will be the galaxy s3 instead, that's too bad

The One X uses about 4-6gb of the 16gb of storage, so we only have 10-12gb to actually play with. After loading a few games, apps, music, pictures, tv shows and movies, I might just make it under the 10gb limit. I hated constantly having to delete apps, movies from my HTC Desire because of the lack of internal storage. I don't want to go through this again with the One X.

Are you guys at all concerned with space? My wife has a 16gb captivate and it's almost full from pictures. The one x only had 16gb internal and no external Sd card right? What do i do about her wanting to keep current pictures and have room for the future?

Not that concerned. My old phone was an iPhone 32GB. I used a little more than half of it only because of all the apps I had. Knowing that, it hasn't been a problem on the HTC One X. A lot of my old apps I should have deleted anyways.
For pictures, I've set Drop Box to auto upload pictures from the camera folder when on Wi-Fi. So far, it hasn't been a problem. As of this writing, I can take 5579 more pictures before the local storage is full. Hope this helps.

The one x has integrated dropbox and 25 gb of extra space for free.On my rogers one x I can set the camera to automatically upload pictures taken right to dropbox. So if its primarily pics you're concerned with it shouldn't be too bad.

Google + integration too. I have mine set to sync automatically on wifi.

Take pics off the phone. that's like 6k++ pictures.
Beyond that, you have a 25gb Dropbox account, as well as 5gb Google drive.

No. Had a 32GB iPhone 4. Only used about 8GB in almost 2 years.

I don't watch video on my phone anymore since I have the new iPad, I mostly use my phone now for photos and music only. I only synce about 5-6 gigs of music, so dump the photos to Dropbox and a few apps and I will be happy. I am just excited about Chrome and LTE on a 4.7" screen.

Not worried either. I've had an 8GB mSD card in my EVO without an issue. Especially these days with Google Play Music streaming, Dropbox and Google Drive.

I was a little concerned about the space but with integrated drop box. I have set my pictures to upload then delete them from my device then I use doubletwist for my music and sync and change my playlists once every few days.

16 GB will fit approx. 3,000 pictures. If you have 3,000 pictures and haven't uploaded any to the cloud, something is wrong.

I have 10 gigs of podcasts on my captivate. being a security guard means audio is a essential part of my day. don't like the thought of whittling that figure down but the one x is looking mighty fine. just wish it was 32 gigs then i wouldn't hesitate.

I don't know how tightly dropbox is integrated, but if you put them up on Picasa or in your google folders, it is pretty much seamless to browse those albums from the cloud.

What kind of speed do you need to use Google music? I have LTE at home and at school, but some places I drive through don't. It's incredibly irritating that ATT ruined an otherwise perfect phone by halving storage and removing the SD card slot.

The phone is capable of more. The carriers are HTC's customers of these and are the ones that spec the phones. It's not an accident that the intl version has 32gb and ATT/Rogers only has 16gb. Or that the Sprint version has a microSD slot and ATT/Rogers doesn't.

The phones are spec'd, then the carriers choose which to buy. The early adopting carriers are getting the 16gb version, the first of the variants. The international xl is 16gb too. The 32gb variant (only listed in Australia so far) won't be in the market for several weeks if not months to come (partially because of the issues quallcom is having with tsmc). The bom (bill of materials) will most likely be quite different as well.
The carriers choose what they want of what's made available at the time and make orders. Then those orders are then fulfilled. Adjustments, such as branding, must be implemented before manufacturing begins. Each design change costs money, the bigger the change the bigger the bill. The Rogers one is a vanilla xl with only software customization.... the volume of their order was probably pretty small as well.
The at&t one has just the at&t branding above the screen. Sprint, on the otherhand, has probably paid htc almost double ppu (price per unit) for their variant. And their orders were put in much later than rogers & at&t. Their unit quantity order is also much higher than at&t's. They'll have a finite number available. Because the at&t & rogers units are pretty much vanilla, it makes it much easier for them to make repeat orders when needed.

Yes, open up the drop box acct. and than all your pics can be put there.You can access them from your phone quite easily!!

I'm not concerned about the space necessarily because of the cloud services, but I am concerned about the amount of data I'll use while uploading items to the cloud service.

I have seen disassembly pics of the HTC One X and am wondeing if they use a microSD card for the internal memory (like Samsung did for Captivate? ) and if it would be possible to swap out the memory card with a cloned say 32 gb / 64 gb card?

Oh man, I'll be so pissed if that turns out to be the case. If so, why would they give the XL only 16GB when the Tegra edition has 32?

Maybe the difference in price between the S4 and T3 is the same as a 16GB mSD card and 32GB. There's always trade-offs to be made in hardware design. HTC probably wanted to keep the phone below a certain threshold regarding component cost.

I was wondering the same thing the other day. I love almost everything I'm seeing about this phone but the 16GB (actually, only about 12GB usable) thing is really making me hesitant to buy it. Too bad the captions in the pictures aren't translated!

I don't see any microsd or microsd slot in any of those pics. Internal memory is usually a soldered chip on the board. Would be pretty difficult to swap those out.

Actually, none of the Samsung phones ever used internal microSD cards. Samsung phones always use NAND chips (Captivate included).
In the past, HTC always use miroSD cards for internal storage. But it may have changed recently. Who knows.

Yes, and the solder joints are usually tiny on the chips. Very difficult to do by hand (if not almost impossible), with little room for error.

The words in simplified Chinese are simply describing how to take the phone apart. The original pictures are a part of a series of pictures teaching you how to take apart the phone and the text are things like "The camera is connected to the main circuit board, so be sure to be careful when disassembling." I went through all of the pictures on the original site and none of it mentions where data storage is.

Thanks for taking time to review the pics and the translations.. Its a shame that HTC decided to skimp on the internal memory and provide no expandable options. Suspect att strategy involves increased dependence on cloud storage that would force users to increase data consumption... Chi ching!

Google Music is probably the only realistic solution for you... Stream some music and pick and choose what to keep on your phone.

Would use data plan if not on wifi. Still if you are 3GB or more with att should be doable with moderate use

Thanks for the info, but WOW is that a small amount of space. I have close to 5GB on just pictures and videos alone.
I was thinking about google music, however, I mostly listen to music while in the subway; which means no reception/wifi. I had my sights on getting this phone, I guess I may need more time to think about it. If HTC was able to put a slot for a microSIM, why not a micro SD as well? . But, like someone stated in an earlier post, I'm sure it is to force people to use the cloud, which uses data, and ultimately creates overages.

I've been waiting to see a teardown to see if replacing the nand would be possible. If it was that would make a huge market for broken International One-X boards. I can't judge by the pictures if it's possible. Usually on a teardown there's at least 20 pics.

You had one thing right when you said cloud dependency, but I think it goes much further than that. Think of the 23GB free Dropbox space they're giving us all, the Google Music they are all undoubtedly expecting us to use. It's the precursor to their future attempt to hold your data hostage! What are you going to do if you don't pay your bill and your service goes out? You can't access your dropbox on the go, you can't stream your music through Google Play. They know that nobody wants to actually fill that measly 10 gigs with music. It's an attempt to get you more motivated to pay your monthly bill, and to extend your contract for another two years once this one is up. It's funny how they give you 23 gigs on your dropbox for 2 years, the same as your contract length. Something tells me that extending your contract will get you another 2 years once it's up. It might look like simple marketing, but honestly it's quite shady of them.

If you go to the original article, there are 21 picks but it's not that helpful. The article is in Chinese but pictures are pictures. Most of the words say things like "screw here", etc.
It should be noted that this is the international version of the HTC One X.

I want AT&T HOX - scared of only 16GB.

I am looking to upgrade from iPhone 4 to AT&T HTC One X on Sunday. The fact that there is no removable battery does not bother me, coming from an iphone. What does in fact have me worried is that it is only 16GB (12GB to the user). Now if I take all my music out, I am well below that amount and can potentially stream.
Do folks think the 25GB of dropbox would help w/ this issue? I have not used it in the past and cuirous if that would fill most needs.
Not much of a question in this thread, my apologies. Just not wanting buyers remorse.

Between Dropbox, Google Drive and Google Play, you should be fine.

Coming from a 32GB iPhone I know I'll be fine. My entire music library is on Google Play and other than that I'm good. I don't store videos on my phone and my pictures could not reach 10GB.
Even more icing on the cake they are including 25Gb of drop storage.

Yeah, you should be fine with the 25 from Dropbox. Also, it would also help you if you upload your music to Google Play, since you can make it available for streaming offline.

This is where I stand on this topic which seems to irk a lot of folks. We have Google drive, for storage, Google music for of course music, Google plus for your pictures and 25 gigs of dropbox for two years. And this isn't counting the memory on the phone. There's no excuse to worry about memory and where to store it any longer. Even devs can't complain about needing to have an SD card because all Roms and the sort can be stored on drive or dropbox. So you see memory on phones is basically an afterthought. Whatever you have built in is plenty.!!

Thanks all. I do have my music up on Google Play - I was unaware of the offline play!
I will be pickign up the HOX on Sunday. Worst case is I can always return it if I feel it does not meet my needs.

Only in the U.S.A, in Canada we do not have access to google music.
If HTC released the 32gb version with 2 1/2 times the usuable storage like the international version (25gb versus 9.8) I'd be all over this phone like a fat kid on a brownie.
I know us Canucks are in the minority, and even then some Canadians don't care, but we have three year contracts up here. To keep my desire current my "developement" folder on my SD card alone is over 4.5gb of custom ROMs, nandroid backups, radios, rils, kernels etc. Something to consider, if you want (in the future) to play with your One X be prepared to always have a computer handy. One of the draws of android to me is it doesn't need a computer.
Some my complaints as a Canadian:
1. Can't use google music to stream, hence need local storage for music
2. Dropbox is for two years, our contracts are three.........nuf said, though google drive is a nice affordable alternative
I know this issue has been beat to death, but personnally I have decided to wait until the fall to see if HTC releases a One X2, or whatever with more storage options. I was waiting for the S3 to decide but dam that thing is fugly, and so heavily skinned, with Samsungs record of poor updating.........good luck seeing jelly bean on that thing, One X....definately.
Samsung did one thing right, 16, 32 or 64gb options........hopefully HTC follows suite in their next series and this will be one issue that can be put to bed forever.

Offline play will save it into your phone, so it will still take up space

Not sure if it supports it yet, but USB OTG.
Just plug your host cable into the phone and plug a jump drive / SD card / portable HD into it. I have a 32gb jump drive I plug into my phone when I want to transfer some movies.

Can you elaborate on this some? It may be an option if we can utilize a thumbdrive on the go if needed. Would I need a USB Connector Cable (M/F on each end)? Would it then just show up as a mounted folder?

Everyone seems to be forgetting about Data limits, these carriers are going to love us streaming our music, videos, pictures, etc. Imagine all the money they going to make by people going over their very small data limits.
I wish we had at least 32GB of storage.

I agree, though I am still on AT&Ts unlimited plan. That will be good until I get throttled at 5GB. Though I have not found anything better w/ another carrier. 5GB is a tough cap to hit though for standard use.

Well, for one it doesn't support SD (expandable memory) And it's processor is a SnapDragon s4 pro quad core 1.5ghz I believe.

Given what I've seen looking into kernel/framework code for the SGS4G, I'd want as much internal memory as I could get. Using a FAT-formatted card and "faking" a permissions-protected file system on top of that is just an ugly hack.
Burned once by the 1G in the SGS4G, I'm already wary of T-Mobile's decision to ship the Note II with the minimum internal memory that they can be configured with.

It seems like the trend for storage is cloud now, and with unlimited plans like the new one from T-Mobile it is starting to make sense to me....especially with multiple android devices. The external SD card days may be numbered.

Its not so much about how much you use but the partitions. But being as it is a nexus device it has to follow the open source guidelines so that should never be a issue. matter of fact I dont think any phone that is not a Samsung uses a proprietary partition system like bml and such.

If it is a $50 difference over a two-year lifespan of the phone, that is something like $2 a month. For that, I'd rather not have to hope that app/data size wouldn't grow quickly. For example, I bought some motherboards for lightly loaded servers a couple years ago. I though that 1 GB would be plenty of memory for them. Now I'm cursing that I can't expand them over 2 GB as they only have one DIMM slot.
I don't know where things are going, but I am sure that the phone manufacturers would love to be able to get you to buy a new phone sooner rather than later. A related example is that Intel had a big problem in the mid 90s -- they realized that their processor power was getting to the point where any home user would not need to upgrade. So they invested heavily in digital TV, cable, and broadband so that there was demand for faster processors.

What about wifi calling?

Would've been perfect but the lack of a microSD card slot and the lack of a 32gb model killed it for me. 16gb just simply isn't enough to hold my music collection as well as my pictures and videos and if you're an audiophile like me, then you know that music just streaming off the cloud won't cut it compared to music at 320kbps or lossless stored on the device itself. I wanna be able to listen to music while I'm on a roadtrip or on a plane, so if I have to rely on cloud service, I won't have most of my music with me... Unless they make a 32gb model, looks like I'm taking the iPhone 5 route...it was either a nexus android phone (I just cannot take the lack of updates anymore) or a iPhone and well the nexus was this close but they just had to have one downfall...you would think that they would have figured it out by now but no...

You are using a mobile device not a high end audio system at home.
Pictures would be better backed up to the cloud using something like Picassa or dropbox. That way they can be viewed anywhere.
I dont like the idea of being limited to a certain size of internal memory and no sdcard. But only because if the internal memory goes wonkers it costs more to replace than buying a new sdcard. Not because I want to claim to be a audiophile and need 320kbps files on my phone.

Okay yeah, this is a mobile device but why not make the most out of what you have? Why listen to crappy really compressed mp3's when you can store things at 320kbps where compression is minimal. With a good pair of headphones, I can hear the difference. It doesn't take a super high end system. I wanna be able to enjoy my music on the go, there's nothing wrong with that..even on YouTube you can tell the difference in sq between 720p and anything below it.
But what's the point in argueing about that on a phone forum, we both agree that we would rather not be confined to only 16gb of internal storage.. I don't understand why can't they simply include it. Every year, that's what people ask for and yet every year, they have to have some downfall.
Nexus S: No external storage and no HD Video Recording
Galaxy Nexus: No external storage again, sub par camera in comparison to other phones, and a pentile display.
Nexus 4: No external storage ONCE AGAIN.

The biggest reason..cost. They dont care if you are willing to pay for it. They are looking to make a unlocked unrestricted phone. Its kinda like not putting LTE radios in. They are looking to make a good phone that is cheap enough people can buy it and not spend 600 bucks. They have found 350 is the price most people will pay for a unlocked phone and not be upset.
16GB is the point they can produce a phone and still make money at the 350 price point.

I think it's just part of the push towards cloud storage. The slight reduction in audio quality in return for the convenience of having their complete audio and video library on all of their devices is a trade I think the majority (not all ) of consumers have no problem with. Besides, with the trend of wider bandwidth for less money that has been with us since dial-up, I don't think it will be such a long time before the streaming quality improves further....historically that's what it's always done.
If audio is your prime concern then I would be more concerned with the type of DAC's in the phone as ultimately that will give you your real world "ceiling" on your audio quality.
I think Google had done fantastic job of providing the consumer with a feature packed, unlocked phone at a hell of a price. Much like with the N7 this will force down the prices of other manufacturers products in order to compete...a win for the consumer.
For anyone that thinks this phone isn't a great deal, Google "unlocked GS3 or iPhone 5" and get back to me.
Plus Whitehawkx, Romann, and the other aokp guys have been lighting up Twitter with tweets about how eager they are to get one, so the development should be strong right off the bat.

But think about it, it takes a lot more battery to steam music and continually use data in the background than it does to simply play music on your phone's memory. And what are you supposed to do when say you are on a roadtrip where signal is edge at best or when you are in a subway or plane where you don't have any signal at all? When I have a smart phone, it is my all-in-one device. It holds my music, works as my GPS, and acts as my phone. And what about apps? The whole point of the smartphone is to have apps right? Where are you gonna store your apps and games if they continue to go the cloud route and completely remove internal storage? Imagine using this galaxy s 4g without the 16gb micro sd card. In my opinion, that would be horrible. I don't wanna have to carry around an extra mp3 player around with me just to be able to fit less than half of my music collection. I don't think adding a micro SD card slot would have added that much to the costs. Whatever. I personally have no problem at all with signing a phone on contract because really, I am just saving money on the phone and paying as much as I would on a prepaid non-contract plan. I don't really see what is so bad with that. It would be more of a hassle switching constantly to different service providers than it would be to just stay with one.
