I just got this phone unlocked for Australia and have the aussie Vodafone SIM card. I can receive txts and make calls but how do I enable data. I have a data plan for internet use and it works on other phones but when I try to browse the web its page cannot be displayed.
Also how do I configure it to receive MMS?
I might have some more questions as I am still trying to configure stuff on this phone for first time use
In settings -> Wireless & networks -> check "mobile network"
You may have to tap the next menu option down, which is "mobile networks" and put in the apn (access point names) settings for your provider, choose your network mode, and network operators.
You can get that information from your carrier.
There is also a setting in there for 'always on mobile data' which you should check.

In your pull-down menu that you can drag down from the top of the screen just about anywhere, you will also notice at the bottom it has a tab for 'quick settings'
If you touch that tab it will get you to a menu where you can set some settings on and off on the fly, and includes a shortcut to 'All settings' in addition to turning mobile networks on and off.
Ok Ill have to get that info from vodafone and Ill test that out tomorrow and see if it works, hopefully it does. On a different note how do I set notification tones and ringtones? I ran a search and on my SD card I created folders called notification, alarms and ringtones. I pasted the mp3 on the notifications folder and then gone into notification tone and selected it. It plays but when I get a txt its the default one still. Reboot didnt work. I downloaded the app ringdroid and that doesnt work also even though I set it to use as notification.
Ok I tried it, when I select APN its blank and empty. Just a black screen only. Ive selected my network provider in network name, but yeh APN is empty nothing happens
Ok I think I found out why the screen is blank. The phone I got is unlocked and I am using it in Vodafone Australia, I did check the frequency to make sure we have the same bands here and I thought we did, for 3g here it should be 2100 correct me if Im wrong. When I set the settings to wcdma only I get no signal at all, but if I get another phone with vodafone carrier it connects to 3g with perfect strength. Not sure why my htc phone wont connect to 3g it should connect unless I have the frequency bands all wrong here for the device and carrier
You need to manually add the APNs to the APN list
When at the APNs list(which will be blank) hit the menu button and you will get some options. Select 'new' which will let you create a new APN then when done editting the fields hit menu again and select 'save' to save the APN you've created.
Select it, then if mobile data is on the mobile data icon should appear next to the signal strength icon

I use my media/music player to setup the ringtone. When you play a song there's always an option to set it as a ringtone

I am really loving my HD2 but I am really missing my manual network selection. When I travel abroad I would really like to "force" the HD2 to stay on my prefered roaming network. I have looked in all of the usual places and can't seem to do it.
Also, tried the registry edit that will at least give me the ability to switch to manual but it won't let me select a network after searching and goes back once I turn on/off the phone.
Any advise or ideas would be great.
Start the comm manager
Click on "Phone" (the icon or text, not the on/off switch)
Click "Menu"
Choose "Network selection"
Change it to manual, and choose the network
Thankyou Nsider, but that is just what I am trying to do and can't. That method has worked just fine on the past 10 winmo phones I have owned but for some reason the dropdown box to select manual is GONE. It is not an option on the network selection. All I see is current network and find network. There is no "switch to manual" or set prefered networks.
I noticed there isn't an option like on the HTC devices that let you choose WIFI ONLY or MOBILE + WIFI. It appears they took that out completely on the Samsung Roms? Is there anyway to disable DATA all the time? I'm in a wifi access point 24/7 literally. Sorry folks, only thing im curious about.
I would like to know also. None of the apps I have tried have worked yet.

Did you try to remove AT&T APN in Settings? It will not be able to connect to 3G without APN.
If you do not want to lose your APN nsettings, create new one, dummy, without any real data inside, and make it default one. Same results.
Another thought, if you have your Wi-Fi turned on all the time, your 3G connection should be switched down automatically. At least it works like this on N1. I am just thinking of bying Captivate, if it will have good custom ROM with Froyo, not taking it with all AT&T bloatware on board and Android 2.1

You can also put it in airplane mode and them just turn wifi on.

Thanks dude I picked that up works Great on Captivate. I'd rather use something like that than enabling wifi 24/7 to eat more battery etc.
I've tried downloading a number of free apps (including APNdroid) to turn off mobile data on my Captivate, but none of them seems to work. All the widgets give the impression that it is off, but I can still open the browser and navigate to websites. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just not possible to fully disable mobile data access on a Captivate?

Hey you're right, APNdroid does nothing it doesn't even shut down the 3G icon on my device now and yes it still connects either way like you said.

You see the 2G icon when you run it?
On my Captivate APNdroid only partially works. Let me explain. If WiFi is on I can disconnect 3G using the APNdroid widget (then if I turn off WiFi and try to surf the web I can't.) However turning 3G back on is more complex. I can turn it back on using the widget if I m connect already to a WiFi network and it will turn 3G on when I turn off WiFi. HOWEVER you must be connected to a WiFi network to turn 3G back on not being connected to a network means the APNdroid button doesn't work. The only solution I found to turn on 3G if I wasn't connected to a WiFi network was to turn on 3G through the APNdroid widget and then restart the phone.
On the other hand I am currently using Juice Defender and their 3G WiFi widget works without having to jump through all those hoops.

Samsung Captivate 3G Toggle Solution
After all the digging and searching around, I found two apps that work perfectly on Samsung Captivate for toggling mobile data (3G)
- Juicedefender (it has a widget you can use to toggle 3G quickly)
- SMODA Widget (It doesnt have too many 5 star ratings but works fine on my samsung captivate).
My phone is rooted but I believe it is not a requirement of either of the above apps. Hope this info is useful for other captivate owners.
Most of the other APN / 3G toggle apps on the market try to put a suffix on the APN names in settings. On the samsung captivate this works only with a restart/reboot. Meaning if you disable 3G using the app it would put a suffix like 'disabled' or something to the APN name. But your phone still has the 3G connection using the original APN settings. Only after you restart the phone does it see the 'disabled' APN name and is not able to use and hence no 3G. Vice versa when you want to enable 3G back - needs restart.
I dont know what process the above 2 apps use but they work instantly on my samsung captivate. No need to restart or click a bunch of other settings. They work perfectly and as simple as it should be.
Concepts behind Reliable 3G Toggling on Captivate
First time poster, hope its not immediately dismissed as TLDR.
For the quick-and-dirty just read the “Reliable Data Disabling”.
I am an advocate for understanding concepts. Solutions, hacks and work-arounds have their place, but, if we can understand more about how and why those solutions work, we might be able to repurpose those ideas and use those ideas to make better applications.
Upload and Download of data coming from the cellular network (as opposed to wifi) is likely determined by which network adapter the network connections are making use of. This might be determined by the android sub-system, by looking at the details of currently open sockets; or by lower-level processes looking at the addresses associated with Rx/Tx data. There are several other ways this could be achieved, and I am sure there are countless people who know exactly how that little 3g icon gets on screen; I am merely laying the groundwork to point out that the Captivate (and possibly the Samsung ROM specifically) is apparently more adept at retaining these residual 3g connections than other Android ROMs.
Let’s assume background data opens a series of sockets to communicate with all of the servers that a person’s phone will sync with. By obfuscating the APN like APNDroid does, we are changing the source of the configuration settings, but connections which are "kept-alive" would not check for new settings. This is why those connections remain open after we activate APNDroid. From this idea we derive at least two strategies that work:
Reliable Data Disabling:
Once an APN obfuscator has effectively disabled 3g by spoofing APN information, you can follow up the data-shutdown with the one-two punch of either disabling the cellular radio, or by intelligently terminating connections that don’t match the current APN paradigm. My understanding is there are no apps that take advantage of the latter.
Disabling the radio: Those who have a shortcut-to-activity application, one might feel compelled to use the “Testing” activity to disable the cellular radio, but, the contents of Testing can be dangerous. It is possible to cause problems with your phone using the Phone Information section of "Testing".
The Captivate is nice and fast, enabling flight-mode and disabling it after 10 seconds terminates all residual data-connections 95% of the time.
1. Activate APNDroid (or other APN Obfusctor)
2. Activate Flight Mode (or disable cellular radio some other way)
3 Disable Flight Mode (or reactivate cellular radio)

In the past 2 weeks I have discovered that when I re-enable my data, the 3g icon comes back right away but my phone makes no attempt to create new connections using the restored settings. The only solution I have found (so far) is to reboot the phone which only works about half the time. I have not stepped through the problem with the android debugger.
Has anyone else noticed this?

a menu will appear. In that click "phone information".
click the option button (which is the bottom left button you have in phone).
In that go to "more" option.
inside that click "disable data connection".
Thats it 3g icon will not appear up there in phone. but you can use wi-fi.
To enable it .
do the same thing above . but at the final moment you will be shown a menu with option "enable data connection".
clicking it wont immediately enable data connection. you have to restart your phone.
If you dont want to restart your phone .
then go to settings->wireless and networks->mobile networks->access point names.
there should be apn called "ATT WAP".
Click the more option button at the bottom left and click "reset to default".
Thats it. Now your 3g icon will appear at the top (provided wi-fi is turned off).

Good post. You are correct that the captivate will indeed hold onto the valid connection even after modifying the APN. Flight mode toggling will sever the connection forcing it to use the modified settings which should prevent it from reconnecting to data.
The way I disabled my data connection before froyo (all hail froyo data power- button toggle) was to make a shortcut to my APNs and I made a "disabled" APN that was just called disabled. I would have to select it and then toggle flight mode to disable, but reconnecting was as simple and just selecting the real APN and it would immediately reconnect. Never had to restart phone to reconnect, except when using programs from the market.

Depending on what countries you're visiting and for how long, you might consider getting a prepaid local SIM card from that country. I've done that in a couple of different countries and was able to get prepaid data deals for a $2-$3 a day. Will vary greatly depending on country and carrier. And, of course, your phone will have to be carrier-unlocked to use the SIM card.

I am using Samsung Captivate(unlocked) in India on Airtel's network.
Under 'Network Operators' menu, phone displays a read-only setting called 'Default Setup'. there is no way I can scan network manually.
this is problem for me while I am roaming. while roaming, I want the setting to be 'manual' so that I can hop onto my fav network.
usually(in any other phone), there would be a setting to set the network to manual or automatic mode.
other problem is that, there is no place to set the network mode(i.e 2G/3G).
are there any tweaks I can do to enable these settings on Captivate.
I am on JH7 update with out any kind of root.

This is for me who came back from Dubai and found my stupid captivate would not connect back to AT&T network.
I could not chnage the network as "default setup" was greyed out and phone gave continued warning could not connect to etisalat ( dubai provider).
I found out through a lot of hard searching that I needed to use samservmode then
DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL -> PLMN AUTO/MANUAL set to AUTO
That fixed it and got me back on AT&T

i just returned from Nigeria and much to my surprise in Atlanta I couldn't get the
AT&T network back on.
doesn't work
I tried the app and it's not working. But for some reason AT&T is back on the air.
So I'm OK for now but can't get the Default Mode to turn to automatic.
Anything else i need to do to phone so SamServMode will work. Or am I not saving the changes properly?
I have had several instances where something I have done to my phone created a situation where I had no phone dialing capability. The error message when attempting to dial is "mobile network not available", and I'd get notice of "searching for network".
Restoring the com.android.phone app did not help with this. Neither did the suggestion seen elsewhere about entering ##72786# into the keypad to reprogram. The past solutions was to do a factory reset/wipe and then a restore of apps...pain in the a**.
Today I was able to work out another solution that has resolved this issue for me (at least this time)!.
1. Download Anycut app from http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1281882094_Any_Cut_1.0.apk, and open.
2. Make a new shortcut to activity named IOTHiddenMenu (the first one of three with the same name in the list)
3 Open this shortcut and select the following: TestMode Menu>UTMS>Debug Screen>Phone Control>Network Control>Band Selection>Automatic, then hit back twice to get to your main screen.
4. Download Phone Info ([email protected]) from Google Play, and open
5. Use Phone Info app to change preferred network type "“LTE/CDMA/EvDo" (click on Device Information and scroll down for first box to select and change).

Lair12, now that I am back in the US, for the first time since using my S3 outside the US, I'm getting the no network error as you describe here...
I've tried the steps you describe here, but I still can't dial out (I do have 4g data).
I was wondering if you might have any other ideas before I start flashing? Any insights would be greatly Appreciated!
I had a similar issue recently where I could receive texts and utilize data but nothing else. Attempting to dial out would lead to the "Mobile Network Not Available."
This problem first occurred after putting a T-mobile sim in the phone. I tried numerous things such as playing with the phone settings in phoneinfo and I even restored the Verizon image which re-rooted my phone but nothing would help.
I decided to place my microsim into my thunderbolt (with an adapter of course). The thunderbolt worked just fine (phone calls, SMS and Data).
I then placed the microsim from the thunderbolt back into the S3 and everything went back to working as normal. Not sure if it will work for anyone else but I figured I would share since I went crazy trying to find a solution that did not require a full factory reset.
Well, just to close the loop, I was never able to restore my voice connection... I ended up having to reset the phone back to stock to get it back...
Oh well, it gave me a reason to try out CM10!

I'm necro-ing this thread since it just happened to me and I found a fix on CM10.1 given the root cause. Also, Anycut no longer exists in the store -- try using "QuickShortcutMaker" instead.
This seems to happen when the radio gets switched off the correct frequency. To get it back (in CM10.1), you have to dial *#*#4636#*#* . As soon as you hit the last *, you will be taken to a "Testing" menu.
Click "Phone information" then make sure your phone number and IMEI look roughly correct. Then press the "Menu" softkey and then "Select radio band". For Verizon CDMA/LTE, this should be set on "Cellular (800-MHz)". Tap it, and the signal indicator in the menu bar should go back to normal. Also make sure the "Preferred network type" is set to "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)". (This is also where you enable "GSM auto (PRL)" if you want to make it a WorldPhone.)
The other option in here is USA band (GSM-850/PCS-1900/WCDMA-850/WCDMA-PCS-1900), which I presume is for GSM compatibility since "Global" isn't an option in the "Mobile Networks" menu in CM10.1 (without a certain cherrypick).

Re-Necromancing Again....
Doesnt work for me. I had to push "call" after entering last star same error- no mobile network... Thought I would give it a try since I hit the wrong option on the screen. I was looking at the LTE options and got distracted... I did however get EFS Pro to Open IOTHiddenMenu. It is like the 2nd or 3rd tab, you will know it when you see it. Now to find out where (IOTHiddenMenu) is hiding on the actual phone. I did find

This shows an option to hide or show the "hidden menu".
I tried enable and a reboot, but no luck. Looks like EFS Pro is My Solution currently.

A: Preliminary steps that were done before leaving the US:
a1 – From Google Play store install the following apps if you do not have them: APN Manager Pro (81 Square), Phone Info ([email protected]), Titanium Backup Pro , ES File Explorer and Open Signal Maps. You may have to pay a few bucks for some of these pro versions, but they are required.
a2 – In Titanium Backup Pro, go to Backup/Restore, find and “long select” APN Manager Pro, and then select “Convert to system app”.
a3 – Open APN Manager Pro, select Insert APN, and input the data needed from your desired service provider (see note 1 below for help). When done, go to APN List and make sure your current APN’s and the new APN’s are both there. What I did was to leave the US with several options for each country I was going to visit already loaded into the APN list so I could be ready for several possible providers. At this point, your phone should still be fully functional in the US with Verizon LTE.
B: When overseas, I did the following steps to go from LTE to GSM:
b1 – Turn off phone, pull out battery and put in micro SIM from your foreign country. DON’T LOSE YOUR VERIZON LTE SIM! Turn phone back on and turn off Wi-Fi.
b2 – Use Phone Info app to change preferred network type "Global" (click on Device Information and scroll down to the first box to change). Some have reported that other choices were needed for their providers, so you may have to experiment.
b3 – Go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names and select the correct APN. I believe that only APN’s that your SIM recognizes will show on this list. (If it’s not here, go back to step a3 and enter the needed APN data).
b4 – Reboot phone. You should have the SIM card working for phone and data.
C: To return to Verizon LTE:
c1 – Use Phone Info app to change preferred network to “LTE/CDMA/EvDo” (click on Device Information and scroll down to the first box to change).
c2 – Turn off Wi-Fi, pull battery and put Verizon LTE micro SIM card back in.
c3 – Power up phone (at this point you might be working properly already, and you are good to go!)
c4 – If needed, go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names and select LTE-Verizon Internet (which is my default here in North Carolina).
Notes and Troubleshooting Issues:
1.Below are several sites to check if you do not know the correct information. I cannot guarantee that this information is current. You may only need to enter some of this information to get data working (I did not try phone or MMS use). In some cases it may be as little as just the APN Name to display and the correct APN (sometimes referred to as GPRS APN), while other providers may require the user names or passwords or more for full functionality. Please report your successful requirements in the thread.

2.I highly suggest that you use Open Titanium Backup Pro and backup your phone apps and data. Go to Backup/Restore; then select the check mark in the upper right corner; then select RUN "Backup all user apps and system data"; and then select the green check mark in the upper right corner. Let this run until complete. You can restore any of your apps from here in the future.
3.I highly suggest that people use the Open Signal Maps widget that comes with this app, and install it in a 1x2 format on one of your screens. This shows exactly what is happening as far as provider, signal strength, and type of signal. This is where I could see that I got 3g, 3.5g and 4g service from time to time in Moscow and Helsinki. I keep this on my home page here in the US.
4.When using your phone in the US or overseas with a non-verizon SIM card, you have a constant icon warning in the notification bar referring to a "Non-Verizon SIM". If this bothers you and you want to remove it, the answer is to freeze or delete the app Setup wizard 1.0 (its icon is a red check mark with a magic wand). Using Titanium Backup, freeze or delete Setup wizard 1.0; or if you freeze/delete with AntTek App Manager, it is the second listed Setup wizard and contains 24.00kb. The app contains very little data in the database (three csv files with nothing of interest), and hopefully can be safely frozen. I have no idea why it is in the phone to begin with.
5.I also suggest learning the great features of ES File Explorer. If will allow you to easily get to your all your files (including system and root). Open it and go to menu>settings; then check "up to root", "root explorer", "mount file system" and "backup system app". Now you have full access and control of your phone files. The external card is found at /mnt/extSdCard, while the internal SD card is at /mnt/sdcard. You can set favorites to get to places you want to visit fast, and that is a plus to this file program.
6.Some phones have the option to check the following: Go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network (if available)>then the first instance of Network Mode (before Access Point Names), and make sure it says Global mode or another choice that works for your provider (If not, go back to step b2).
7.Some phones have the option to check the following: Go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network (if available)>then the second instance of Network Mode (after Access Point Names), and make sure it says GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode), at least that is what I needed in Europe. Some providers may need other selections and you may have to experiment.
8.There have been reports of problems with the phone app crashing using the prior, more complex method. If this happens, try restoring your "com.android.phone" app with Titanium Backup. I'm still looking for confirmation that this fixes any issues, so please post to the thread if you have this problem and let us know if this fix works, or if it does not.

but for the GSM 3G network i followed all previous steps mentioned, i installed all applications requested but when i tryed to add new apn with APN Manager app it makes an error message "problem when creating apn"
i m unable to add new apn
in the APN list, i find 55 APNs all for are installed by default and i cant delete any one of them
i think that i should modify the system application related to that (to the APN) to get ability to add new APN
how can i do it so

after a week searching and making many tests, i finaly found a solution to get 3G on my Verizon SGS3 in Tunisia for Tunisiana APN

Before leaving the U.S., you need to complete the following:
Root the phone with stock ROM
Use sprint.recovery.image for clockworkmod (others may work as well)
Load APN Manager app from Google Play
Load HiAPN Global app from Google Play
Load Ghost Commander app from Google Play
Load Dropbox app from Google Play
Load PhoneInfo app from Google Play
Back up APN’s to sd card through HiAPN
Edit “apnlist_backup.xml” found at sdcard>HiDroid_Net>HiAPN using Ghost Commander app (select DB text editor to open) and then edit to include your required APN information.
Use HiAPN to restore APN’s
Use APN Manger to see APN list and check that info for new APN is correct (APN manager cannot do anything else or it will crash)
Use APN Manager to check to make sure that APN for now is still set to LTE-Verizon Internet or EHRPD – Verizon Internet
Once overseas, you need to complete the following:
Turn off phone and pull battery and put in micro SIM from your foreign country (I’m using MTS in Russia, but was prepared for several other providers)
Turn phone back on
Turn off wifi
Use PhoneInfo app to change preferred network type “Global” (click on Device information and scroll down for first box to change).
Open HiAPN and select “Click to Autoset APN’s” or hit “Net” one change at a time until you rotate to the correct APN
Go to airplane mode for a minute (this helps reset the radio)
Take off airplane mode
Go to Settings>More Setting>Mobile Network and make sure that is not grayed out. If not there, try going back to HiAPN and doing the “Net” cycle again.
Check Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names to make sure correct APN is selected. (If not, go back to step 5).
Reboot phone, you should have the cars working.
Once back in the states, complete these steps:
Use Phone Info app to change preferred network to “LTE/CDMA/EvDo”
Pull battery and put Verizon LTE micro SIM card back in
Power up phone
Turn off wi-fi
Open HiAPN and hit “Net” one change at a time until you rotate to VZWINTERNET
Use APN Manager to check to see if it is set to LTE-Verizon Internet or EHRPD – Verizon Internet
Check Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names to make sure correct APN is selected. (If not, go back to step 5).
If for whatever reason these steps fail (Once back in the states), then do the following:
Reset phone to non-rooted stock, Go here for more info.
Do full phone reset,
Re-root
Re-clockworkmod
Restore ROM through recovery mode.
