[Q] Useability issue? single- vs. double-click buttons in WP7 App "Device Reset" - General Questions and Answers

[Q] Useability issue? single- vs. double-click buttons in WP7 App "Device Reset"
[Note to moderator: **PLEASE** read the note at the end of this post. Thank you. Note to all: the question of this post concerns ONLY the (excellent) app called "Device Reset" for Windows Phone 7 by sh4d0w86. This app is the subject of a thread in the Windows Phone 7 Software Development forum]
App installed perfectly and performs as documented. My right thumb and left index finger thank you!!
However, I humbly ask you to consider a small change to improve the useability, at least for idiots like me (and I believe there are many, I'm afraid):
When I started the app and saw those two big beautiful square buttons, I immediately clicked on the first one ("restart"). The feedback clearly showed me that the button-press was received. Then .... nothing. Nothing happened. It seemed so weird to me. So I tried a second time. Same result: nothing. I then pressed the "power off" button. Again, the button-pressed was clearly registered, but nothing happened. Thinking that "obviously" the problem was with me, I pressed each of the two buttons about 5-10 times, slowly and clearly, hoping that the little man inside the application would wake up and hear me. But the app just did nothing. Exceedingly confusing and frustrating.
I actually read the entire thread through THREE times before I noticed the little word "double" next to the word "click" and understood my problem. And of course, double-clicking the buttons works just fine, as per the instructions.
I certainly understand why you might want to insist on a double-click in this situation. In that case, may I humbly suggest that you add just that tiny part of the "user manual" to the button or its surroundings? For example, you might just replace the text "soft reset" with the phrase "double-click to soft reset," or replace the word "restart" with the phrase "double-click to restart." I don't want to dictate anything -- I actually really like the huge sparse text in what you have. But the fact is that it took me an extra 15-30 minutes, plus wading through an entire thread, to figure out how to use your app.
An alternative might be to avoid giving the graphical feedback (the color inversion) when I press the buttons. A single button press doesn't mean anything, and the feedback (which displays for the entire time the user has his finger on the button) really does suggest that a single button-press is a complete action, while it's not.
However, if you did that, I claim you'd **still** need to put something in the UI to tell the user that s/he needs to double-click. So my vote would be to do my first suggestion; if you have time to spare, it would be nice to have the graphical feedback display WHEN and ONLY WHEN the user finishes a complete double-click. If the user needs to double click to make it happen, then a single-click shouldn't bring any reward to the user.
Again, thanks for an excellent app.
[NB: this post would be much more appropriate for the thread
[APP] Device Reset -[R]- 21 Jan 12 -- 13 Mar 12 -[V]- 2.0.0.0 [TRANSLATORS WANTED]
of the forum "Windows Phone 7 Software Development", which is devoted to the excellent app "Device Reset" by sh4d0w86. Alas, I am but a newbie, and when I tried to post to that thread I was instructed that I "must go to the Q&A or General Forum" to post anything. Of the two possibilites, the Q&A forum seemed to me to the be the least inappropriate. If you are a moderator, perhaps you can transfer this post to that thread, and (if possible) allow me to post to that thread only, should I receive any request to follow up. Thank you]

first, let me say, glad you found my application useful.
second, thank you for the feedback.
the reason i made it a double tap to execute the button's action was because i added the ability to pin a tile. i originally had it one press, but had run into problems when adding the pin function. as soon as you touched the button, the action executed. thought i could solve it by having the action only execute when releasing the button, but would still execute after holding to pin the tile. so, i changed it to a double click, to solve the issue.
will add a how-to of sort to either the Device Reset thread or the actual application to hopefully avoid this issue with others.
regards,
sh4d0w86

One bump or two?
I definitely agree with the decision to use a double-tap. A single-tap is just to easy to do by accident, and the user might really not want to do a hard shutdown by accident. If you did a single-tap, you'd probably end up adding an "are you really sure you want to do this?" dialog box -- and "are you really sure?" dialog boxes are among the most annoying things that computers do to people.
I hope you'll find a way to add the words to the app itself without breaking your aesthetic sense. Surely you wouldn't be happy to think that someone has to actually "read a manual" in order to use your app (whether the manual is in a thread here or anywhere else)? And how do you intend to make him aware of the note in the thread anyway? Oh I see: you could add to your app a phrase like: "Please see the thread in xda-developers for instructions on the proper way to press the button below." Not exactly a better solution.
Best,
Scott

Cingular 8125 Key board lights go out to fast...

When I slide out the keyboard and type the lights go out on the keyboard within a second or two of a pause. Is there any way to make the lights stay on longer ??
I know your happy about your new wizard. But its enough with the questions.
Use the search function, like everyone elese.
About the keyboard let me say it is possible, do a search
Thanks for your kindness Weezy; I do not know about you but My job keeps me very busy, you know-job? Weezy? I have limited time to play here and I looked for a wile but thought that's what this forum was about- to ask for help. How do you know how much time I spent looking any way? It's possible I missed the answer to my question, then what-? Not everyone may have the time you have decided what is propper to search here first before asking questions. I hung out on Treo forums for 18 months and saw tons of others and myself ask many questions and never saw any one told to stop with the questions. I do not like you to much Weezy, you have taken a very fun experience for me and others in my office who are keeping up on this with me and have tryed to turn us all off about this forum and our new 8125's. Three of us bought them but only I am doing the research for us all. I could have all the others ask questions to, would that make you happy? Sorry to the others about being gruff but I thought we all had a common bond to share here. I'm not going to stop asking questions. I do not like being pushed around.
I own my business so I have to sit down and get on the computer when there aren't any customers I need to take care of.
And what your doing is breaking the FIRST rule of the forum. Let me make it faster for you, and paste it here for you.
1. Check if something hasn't been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search' function in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there.
(We acknowledge that part of the problem is that we never created a well-organized system of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) documents. But then we're doing lots of cutting-edge stuff, and we'd rather build cool tools than work on perfecting FAQs.)

Talk about waste of bandwidth, weezy you are a waste. I guess 41 posts make you the big man here. I sure hope you have no interests in this web site or I would never have donated money. You are clearly wrong and to rebut as you did instead of offering help shows your integrity and willingness to help. It seems you are trying to be big man on campus, maybe in hopes to get some ware. That is not the way to do it so grow up. So when it comes to me and my posts let those that I give my money to tell me what to do here not you. As we tell people at work that try to have a say ware they do not belong" you do not sign my pay check". So weezy mind your own business.
You can get tempermental huh. I been here before you heard of Windows Mobile. It just that I switched to Treo because I was dealing with Palms at the time. I was just like you and doubted the search button. I didnt post the first I signed up here. Hey, if I didn't tell you about the search button, so one else would.
Hope you get your keyboard working
Hint, its with include in your search keyword : registry
zac123- have you found fix for key light timing - have a refurb 8125 for month and have same issue - pain in neck on train to work at 5am - have many questions and find no answers, need to post when have more time - have done extensive search on this site and others and find no fix - attempts to call phone mfgr from number given to me from my service provider are waste of time, calls go to S.Africa and have constant disconnects - keep up good work with questions, they bring out the insane and every site needs a good laugh - ask many questions and do not let the insane bother you, just laugh - need to register with pay pal when have time, want to donate - please reply

HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout = 30 (DWORD decimal)
(This key only works on Wizard and Universal)
if you'd used the time to UTFS instead of flaming on weezy correcting your ignorance of forum ettiquete, you would have found the question had been asked dozens of times, but anyways, it won't work:
Change the keyboard backlight duration
To change the duration of the keyboard backlight, you can set (example is 30 seconds):
HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout = 30 (DWORD decimal)
Please note that this may not work on some devices. One such notable exception is the HTC Wizard.

I don't think it work on the 1.8 rom, what rom are you using? And Thank You Marcski
Weezy you are pretty smart, you new just ware to go with this. Zac123 should listen to you. I'm sorry about my post to zac123 about insane people. I wish i would have come back sooner to try your fix out. I been working on this for a month now, I will do it now. I alrady have PHM reg edit installed, this wll be easy. I chose New DWORD Value / value name I made QKeyLedTimeout and value I set to 30 and chose OK. Then it showes up under name as QKeyLedTimeout and under Data as 30(0x00001e) Unfortunately this did not fix the issue. i see that Marcski says it wont work, you guys are pretty smart. I guess it is time to give up. O well.... Maybe I will keep pestering cingular instead of you guys. Thanks any way weezy and Marcski.
Thanks, but I didn't find this registry edit. I remeber I used a cleaned rom, and it work, but I haven't applied the hack since I upgraded to the official 2.6 rom
I have a wizard with the 2.26 Molski ROM, but on earlier versions it didn't work either..
Thanks marcski, I made my self known at My service provider with this issue. We have a very large corporation that uses them so I have my corporate tek support rep checking for a firmware upgrade or something to fix this problem.I'm going to search here more now for a firmware upgrade, I read someware else there is an unofficial release of one. I hope I can find it, there is so much on this site and I have trouble with the search engine.
here's a hint to a good rom, its by molski.
Here's the link
http://www.molski.biz/
Or just go the Wizard Update forum, plenty of roms for the wizard and 8125. Search for mr clean rom to, its pretty.
I myself use the official t-mo rom 2.6
You can update the rom and do a hard reset, and when it get to the part where it say's "install customization" press the reset button on the side, and it won't install those ugly carrier customization

It's been a wile since my last post but i want to have some info so I could contribute something to this web site. I have researched extensively the keyboard light timing issue with the 8125 and I do not have good news. I have some phone numbers here that any one may use to call and check on there own about the info I am posting. I was on the phone for 65 minuts with a few different tech support agents wile they tested there own 8125's and researched the issue. They all said the light timing is controlled by a capassitor that once fired has a discharge rate of it's own that can no be controled by any firmware upgrade or registery entry. They said this then is a hardware issue therefore it ca not be addressed. These are the phone numbers; 713-774-7888 is for the main offices and 877-878-6944 was for opperational questions and 888-354-2375 was for repair and technical support. The last # was ware I got all this info today. So now I am going to put this issue to rest and just get used to the phone the way it is. I have been customizing it with different software, such as Handy Switcher- PocketPC Batter Monitor- Phm Registery Editor- IM-Pluss- SPB-Backup and WiFiFOFum wi-fi sniffer. I find all these programs very helpful, some I have already purchased and some I am waiting for another pay day. My next two projects are to find out why the first Hot Sync never works and comes up with an error making me unplug the phone and start over, then it syncs up fine. Then I need to find some king of Java application to install that will allow me to watch my live traffic cams like I did on my Treo 650. This has all been fun work so far.

[Q] anyone know what the process scribble is?

i have a process running that says its called scribble... com.htc.mysketcher... anyone know what this is?
Judging from the name, I'd say it is likely to be an application or widget where you can scribble. Seeing how it is an HTC software, I'd say it is their Notes widget.
thanks for the response, that sounds viable but i don't have the notes widget installed .....
maybe it's this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696193
how i got this piece of delightful information:
1. i went to http://forum.xda-developers.com
2. i went to the forum-search (click on those gears next to the field in the upper right)
3. in the field with the label "Keyword" i entered the word "scribble"

Thanks for your delightful information . now let me tell you how retarded you are:
1. i do not have a custom boot animation running
2. Upon first viewing your link to "delightful information" did you stop to think that maybe I wouldn't install this boot animation because it might not be the proper size for our screens?
3. if I had in fact installed this, don't you think I would have enough common sense to know what the process might be considering this would be the name of something I MYSELF had installed?
4. Try posting a useful comment instead of a smart**s one
Scribble is an htc app used for two things. The first is its an app that works with htc's stylus enabled devices (e.g. The flyer and evo view) to draw or "sketch" directly onto the screen. The other thing, and why its on our phone, is it is the app that facilitates htc's built in screen capture feature.
i can confirm screen capture, i took scribble out and bye bye screen capture
awesome, good info, thanks alot to the both of you!

woah, calm down there. My post wasn't meant to sound like a "smart**s" one.
I just tried to help. Although, the lmgtfy might let you think that, i just added it for the giggles.
I truly apologize if my post offended you in any way.
I just wanted to show you, detailed as possible, how i got this (indeed delightful,
because information is always delightful ) information.
You were the one who opened a thread with "blabla scribble blabla"
without mentioning your ROM that you're using
the date you first stumbled over this process
what applications you have may installed or other modifications/configurations you made to your device
what research you've done to get additional information
and finally:
not sharing your research results in your post
You gave SOME information as an answer to my post, but not in your
original post. Why not?
Would you've shared more detailed information on your problem
in your original post, i might have not came up with such a "smart**s" reply.
And i am the one you call retarded. Nice move.
As i understood this forums, this place isn't meant for:
"I have a question xy, can someone give the answer?"
It's meant for:
"I have a question xy, i have done this and that to resolve it, but i still have some open points i want to clarify, can someone help?"
The difference is, that you SHARE the information you have, to PREVENT people come up with guesses (like i did).
Guesses will form up to rumors, rumors spread out, become an urban legend and
everyone will soon swear to god that he or she knows someone who had "xy" resolved by some urban legend... true story.
In addition, this place is not for:
"yo, the answer is bla"
it is for:
"yo, the answer is bla and i have this and that information to back up my claim, go and check up if this works for you too."
Instead of calling me "retarded" you could've simply stated in a proper manner,
that my given information is not useful at all, because of the resolution or something
else i could've easily checked myself but i did not, because i was in a hurry or whatever.
This would've improved my behaviour in this place, but now i am just frustrated
with some guy i don't even know just because i tried to contribute.
Sorry for using my crystal ball, it was foggy in there.
I guess i am back to reading this forums, instead of contributing to them.
[edit] fixed some of many typos ~.~

I think you're really reaching here. In a prefect world that'd be great but this is the real world. There really was nothing wrong with the OP! I understood it just fine and was able to answer the question with no problem. I also think that anyone that took 2 seconds to read it should have understood as well. Also if there were a rule that you had to post links to back up every answer then I wouldn't have even posted the correct answer because I don't have time to track down links for simple questions that I know, I know the answer to.

[APP][2.3+] Is Keymonk the fastest smartphone keyboard ever?

Hi all,
One fine evening a while back,
I was sitting under an Android tree when suddenly a device hit me straight on the head.
And then it hit me (again):
People tap type with two fingers but sweep with a single finger.
How would it be like to sweep words with two fingers?
It was a terrible itch, and I just had to scratch it,
and so the Keymonk keyboard came to be.
And let me tell you, it is AMAZING...
In 2010 Samsung and Swype made headlines around the world when
Melissa Thompson used a Swype powered device to set the word record for fastest SMS at 26 seconds.
In this video, sloppy fingered me, sweep through the same notorious SMS in 18 seconds:
Does it look weird?
Give it a try: http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keymonk.latin
And let me know what you think about it.
Better yet, tell your friends!
UPDATE (Oct 26) - Here is a great FAQ created by polstein to summarize this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33278012&postcount=192
I have been using it for a while and let me tell you, it is AWESOME!
Are you the developer of Keymonk? I actually use the paid version, but the way you've been pimping it in various threads all over XDA today makes me kinda want to stop using it to be honest
How about you stop being a bit underhanded and make a proper thread here on XDA so that users can give you feedback and make requests, etc.

Pretty much that.
On 7 posts made, 6 are pushing Keymonk. Can't see any users loving a software that much.
OP is the dev of the Keymonk keyboard. I suggested that he open a thread about it & ask for some feedback. He kind of went overboard because he wanted to post his youtube video & you need to have 5 or 10 (?) posts to be able to put up the link.
(Sorry about that, probably my fault)
On the keyboard itself:
I've been using the keyboard for a while. It's like he mentioned - Swype with 2 fingers. I switched a lot from Sliding keyboards to a 2-finger keyboard thumb typing keyboard because while I always love the sliding type of keyboard (going back to the Shark keyboard!) I always disliked using just 1 finger on them.
This is a try at being best of both worlds - 2 finger sliding.
I think it was intended for landscape screen originally, so that your fingers don't bump in the middle, but I use it in portrait with few collisions. Actually, one suggestion made was to offer a split keyboard to avoid the collisions all-together.
A couple people I've shown it to were concerned with it being too complicated, since you have to keep track of both thumbs. I haven't had this problem any more then typing with 2 thumbs.
All I can say, is give the free one a shot & let him know what you think (or just post here).
I'll post my comments here and if you/he/we want to move it elsewhere, let me know.
I've used the free version on and off for quite a while and just decided to purchase it. I like it! But it can be really frustrating when the keyboard doesn't recognize my swipes. It doesn't happen too often but sometimes the keyboard just says "try again" (or something like that). It would be really helpful if there were some way for me to find out what I've done wrong so I can modify my behavior. I have NO idea how the app could do this. Maybe letting me tap the message to get an explanation of some sort?
There also seem to be occasions where I've tricked the keyboard into thinking it shouldn't capitalize the next word. I haven't figured out a true pattern yet but I've noticed that it happens when I've entered several new lines in a row, in the Gmail app, for instance, to leave a couple of blank lines.
I'm a big fan of Swype and am becoming a much bigger fan of Keymonk
oh, let me try
currently on touchpal beta
edit: just tried, quite promising and super fast to type long keywords.. just some collisions as suggested above... and prediction needs improvement.
awesome keyboard I think am going to buy it

Just for the record, that bit of text of yours reads like bullying.
Don't do that again, please.
A new member on XDA can only post a link to Youtube or Google Play after making several initial posts.
XDA only makes this request: "But please, please don’t post junk just to get your post count up!"
I thought it was reasonable and ethical to respond in context to discussions about keyboards.
I thought it was understood that I am the developer,
but in case it wasn't clear I did develop Keymonk,
I apologize to you all.
As for this post, try reading it again.
It believe is perfectly clear from it that I am the developer.
Giving this a go now. Fantastic! Great work.

I haven't seen the try again thing too much. The keyboard does show the trace lines, have you happened to notice when you hit the try again how badly you missed (if you missed at all?)

I *think* the only difference is the pro ones lets you add words to the custom dictionary. (and supports the dev!) Might be others that I just haven't used.

I will think about it. Maybe there are events in which I can detect there was a problem.
What device are you using?
In some devices the multi-touch screen does not always work properly.
Try to notice if the circles flicker while you sweep your fingers.
Another common problem occurs if you bump your fingers together.
This may confuse the touch screen and prevent the keyboard from detecting your intention.

In Keymonk, auto capitalization works like tapping the shift once.
It will reset back to lower case after the next tap.
This is why after tapping the Enter key several times it resets back to lower case.

See the irony is that I'm actually really glad you're on XDA as I like Keymonk, and as I said, have purchased it. The feedback from the users of this community will, hopefully, be valuable to helping you iron out the minor kinks in it.
The only thing I didn't like was the manner of your initial posts, and voiced my opinion about them (and two others actually agreed with me).
As I said, very glad to have you aboard Monkey Man and very much look forward to seeing how the development of Keymonk progresses :good:

What a coincidence, I've just discovered Keymonk in the Play Store. A keyboard junkie myself who types in various languages, I think the concept is pure genius and its actual incarnation in Keymonk is nice and will hopefully get even better over the next months.
The highlights:
- I love the two-handed combination of swiping and tapping. It takes some getting used to, but I think it has enormous potential, particularly on today's bigger screens.
- I love the way you can select a character from the numbers/symbols plane with a simple swipe.
My biggest gripes after a few hundred words:
1. In languages with lots of compounds (like German), you need a way of inputting unknown compound words (having all of them in your dictionary is unrealistic) by swiping the various parts one after another. Like: Zeitgeist -> Zeit + Geist. What you need is a command to start the next word without a space and in lower case. In Swype you do that by swiping from the Space key to the Backspace key (a symbol on the space bar shows you've activated no-space mode). So, you swipe Zeit, then you swipe from the space bar to the backspace key and then swipe Geist, and you get Zeitgeist.
An alternative would be a command to glue the last word to the penultimate one (ie. after the fact as it were rather than before the fact as with Swype). So you swipe Zeit, then Geist, and then swipe a command to convert Zeit Geist to Zeitgeist. Not sure how easy and reliable this kind of postediting would be, but if it worked, I would even prefer it to Swype's method.
2. If I append characters to a previously typed word (often enough inadvertently) and then want to delete it, a left swipe from the Backspace key deletes the entire thing rather than the appended part only. Swype (or was it Swiftkey) does it better by keeping track of edits and only deleting the last part. After #1, this was the biggest cause for lost time in my tests.
3. There are no predictions while typing, only a frustrating "..." (OK, alternative forms for the last typed key are offered, e.g ä for a, which is a nifty idea). Why is that? I thought predictions for the current word (if not for the next) were standard.
4. A long-press must give you some sort of popup with alternative forms (eg. e -> é, è, ê etc.). Different keyboards implement the actual act of choosing among the alternatives differently, but this again is standard, and for a reason. Keymonk itself demonstrates the usefulness of this concept with the excellent popup on long-pressing the full stop key.
I am delighted to see a newcomer that can actually challenge the giants of the category, and I'd love to see it getting even better soon.

I couldn't agree more to what was said above!
because this keyboard really has loads of potential...

Giving this a go now. Fantastic! Great work.
What's the difference between the paid version and the free version?

The full version can add new words to the user dictionary (while the free version can only read the user dictionary).
In addition the full version unlocks the settings page.
In particular it lets you activate auto-spaces after punctuations marks.
My favorite feature in the full version is being able to hide the list of suggestions.
After a bit of practice, you get the right words most of the time and don't really need it anymore.
The extra space you get for the editor view in landscape mode is significant.
You can see how that looks like in the video.

You can also sweep from the 123 key to the ALT key and then to a symbol from the ALT keyboard.
or you can hold the 123/ALT keys while you tap symbols with the other finger and it will return to QWERTY when you are done.

I will think about that, thanks for the heads up!

Well, I believe predictions are a distraction and encourage slow typing, and are not useful when typing at 40 words per minute or faster.

I think this will not work well in Keymonk since a user is likely to hold down a key while thinking what to do with the other finger, especially when just starting to use the keyboard.
In addition, I do not like long press key functionality for letters.
I think it is quicker to tap a letter and then tap its alternative form in the suggestions list.
Thank you for your feedback!
Going to give this a look! Always looking for a faster way to type!
how do add dictionary other than english and the one provided

[Completed] LG Enact is a bit... well, silly.

So, wanted a keyboard-based phone, and I found one. I love how it feels, and how it operates, less three minor things. Well, kinda major, really.
Firstly, I have a overly-aggressive correction thingy when I type. My last phone would, say, if I type 'Haha' and it replaces it with 'Here', all I have to do is touch the backspace once, and it would correct itself, and restore the 'Haha' back, and I just touch space, and keep on typing.
This thing is evil. Instead of letting me, for instance type 'here', it would replace it automaticly with 'he're'. [Is that even a word?] It would -not- correct in the method I described above. I would -have- to go to setting>Input>Dictionaries>Add a word thingy to get it to keep 'here'.
The main thing I need to accomplish is making it so the replacing 'aggression', I would assume, is toned down. I know I could simply disable it, and all, but, I sometimes need the extra help, haha.
That's the first issue.
The second one, is that right by the 'A' button on the keyboard, there is a key that's a shortcut to this 'QuickMemo' uselessness. I have to hit back, and then resume typing, hopefully not hitting the button again. [And I say this, 'cause I have hit it a few times in one reply. x.x]
And, finally, when I get an SMS reply, it likes to show an IM-like window over whatever it is I am doing. It's more of just a minor thing that I -could- live with, assuming the other two issues could be resolved.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,
I'm sorry but we haven't thread for your LG model.
I have two suggesrtions:
1st => Go to General discussion > Questions and Answers and post your request.
2st => try to change your keyboard apk - you can try Swiftkey or Swipe. and stop to use your native keyboard
Good luck

..you want me to not use my physical keyboard? Sorry, just trying to make sure I am understanding what you are recommending.
It was suggestion, but I know that a lot of users who have a physical keyboard prefer this type of keyboard that the other as Swiftkey ...
I haven't got any suggestions except to post your problem to Q&A forum (1st link)
Do you use Auto-correct on your keyboard,?
If yes, simply turn-off

I appreciate the reply, and your time you took into your post, however, I am trying to find an alternative to that. Again, I sometimes am not the best typer, so, I need some help sometimes.
I will, however, post on the forum as suggested.

[SOLVED. kind of] The forum's "Search this thread" function does not seem to work as intended.

Hi all,
I am facing the following phenomenon: I'm looking at some forum thread, say with 50 pages or so. At the top right I see a button labeled "Search this thread". Sounds like a useful tool to quickly search that thread for a certain term. I click that button, type in my search term(s) and underneath a drop down box with OTHER threads, which I do not want to search appears. Often times the thread I'm currently looking at doesn't even show up in that list underneath the search box.
So, what am I doing wrong? With the search feature as it is, I truly have a hard time finding things.
Thank you very much in advance. Driving me nuts.
@rogerwilco75 A similar question has been raised here. Maybe the replies there answer also your question?
@Oswald Boelcke Thank you for the link.
I was using a Chromium-based desktop browser and observed this somewhat inconsistent behavior on both Linux and Windows.
I will make a comparison using FF, and then both browsers with their extensions/addons enabled (most likely uMatrix and/or uBlock Origin to "interfere". DecentralEyes or HTTPSEverywhere not so much I guess), in a private window/tab and with more lowered "shields" settings in the respective browsers (cookies, trackers, DNT ...).
Back to the original question: once or twice clicking the "Search this thread" led to exactly that, then on some other occasions it didn't. I'll have to figure out that pattern.
Anyway, thanks once again for the link, since it let me get around using the ...drum roll... search function.
I guess this can be marked as "SOLVED... kind of", since I'll need to look into it deeper and get more data points/a clearer view.
