Atrix 2 ROM reviews - Motorola Atrix 2

I have used all of the ROM's available for the Atrix 2, here's my review on each
RebelROM
This was the first ROM I tried out so it's the bar, so to speak, for all A2 roms. First installed it when beta 2 was the current version...lovely ROM! I loved how fast and smooth it was, the minimal theming was perfect and it was very easy to install (CWM flash). I didn't care for the stock dialer and the MiFiles app UI was a nice change but it only supports pics/video/music, can't use it like a full fledged file explorer so it was a waste of space to me. It's an incredibly pared down ROM with smooth operation and subtle theming mods. I did encounter issues with Calendar sync (wouldn't sync) and the GPS didn't work either. Calendar sync was resolved by doing a factory reset..GPS was resolved by removing CWM on boot, which also removed the OC. Reflashing the rom after this (without wiping data) restored the OC and preserved GPS, although it was incredibly inaccurate....as in off by 2+ blocks. Also, turn by turn navigation didn't work....it would give me the directions but the actual turn by turn never kicked it, always said "finding gps". Was never able to work that out.
All in all, great ROM! Beta 3 added some nice theming and some more stuff under the hood but it too is incomplete. Was able to fix the major issue with Beta 3 by flashing one of JWM 28's 1% battery mods.
SCv5
This ROM I think is the fastest and smoothest of them all but my big issue with this one is some of the apps are carryovers from the Atrix 4g, like the text messaging and Blur setup one's. That being said, when I restored by apps and app data I lost out on all my text/sms messg's since the app used in this rom is not the same one used in RebelROM. This was a deal breaker as I despised the look and feel of the Atrix 4g software. If that wasn't enough, the settings menu interface also had the look of the Atrix 4g. I just could not get used to this new look and these apps. Speaking of apps, the Market app is the old one, and wouldn't update for me like it should. I ended up installing the new apk myself, minor inconvenience. And Google maps wasn't included. I did like the animations and UI aside from the portions of it described above, but it just wasn't for me.
AtrixBlaze
This one didn't last long on my phone. I first flashed v2, immediately got rid of it. The font was hard to read (too small, type of font didn't help either). The minimalistic text launcher icons weren't my cup of tea, the theme was over the top and the boot animation was low quality. No reboot option in the power menu. But everything else worked and in speed and smoothness there's no complaint. Ended up giving v3 a shot for the past 4 days or so, wanted to give this version a fair shake as the issues described above for the most part can be customized. This version the dev stepped up his game and came out with what looks like a complete graphical overhaul complete with beautiful ICS animations. The font was much better....but the theming was just way too much for my taste. The icons for the drop down toggles were kind of hard to see/figure out what they were for mainly due to their small size. The notification bar icons were cool, but some were just too small...like the usb one. Nice icons but due to the tiny size up there it just wasn't a good fit, IMO. And unless you stick with a neon blue theme, the bar will stick out like a sore thumb. It's got 2 dialers, one regular one modded like crazy and one in-call dialer....I much prefer the in-call dialer. On the regular dialer if you have big fingers like me you could be a little unsure if you pressed the right number since the whole button doesn't light up, the horizontal dividers and light up animations just didn't sit well with me either. The settings menu icons were nice but just added to the graphical overkill. No problems functionally with this ROM but the over the top theme is just too much.
VictoryROM
A minimalists' dream! Simple and to the point with some very classy mods that fit perfectly. Going into settings and clicking any subsection, the UI looks perfectly stock aside from the tastefully small, ICS blue boxes next to the optional selections...when selected, a tastefully small, ICS blue checkmark populates said box. Very nice! The dialer looks stock, and is for the most part...the mod he did to it doesn't jump out and slap you in the face, it's very subtle and clean looking. The in-call screen is similarly modded. My only qualms about this ROM is that it doesn't have the 1% battery mod nor a reboot option in the power menu...but the icons and text in said menu are clean and crisp. No OC, although that's a good thing as far as battery life is concerned. And the battery icon has no numerical charge indicator. Other than that, an absolutely perfect, classy, tastefully done ROM that works fully right out the box. The theming that has been done to it is not only minimal but complete and consistent throughout the ROM. I'm not sure if JWM 28's 1% battery mods will work on this ROM but i'm going to find out shortly Definitely some room for improvement under the hood, would love to see an optional OC version with the ICS animations and the 1% battery mod as well as reboot in the power menu but other than these small things this ROM absolute perfection!
Disclaimer:
The opinions stated above are those of mine and mine alone, are not intended to be rude, disrespectful or otherwise negative towards the developers of said ROM's. I appreciate the hard work they have put forth on these things and that they allow us to use their creations free of charge, I am simply giving my personal opinion of their ROM's since I have tried them all with the goal of providing an objective review for those who haven't.

Nice re-cap / review of our ROMs. I pretty much agree with your views. Only thing I would change is the note on install method for RebelRom. Its an install zip through bootstrap/CWM recovery. Not a "restore" file.
I'd like to see the options you mention in Victory ROM too. Especially the reboot in power menu option.

You must have been bored to make a review like this. Good job

Really though, just wanted to spark some conversation, give a little insight to people who may be leaning one way or the other.

Good reviews, 916, thanks for putting that together..
This is not really a review, but kind of a tangent to the subject.. and I thought this would be a good place for it.
Ok. I've been mussing around with themes and whatnot, and I guess it turns out i'm like a rom scavenger or something..
I was running the Atrix Blaze rom for a while (great rom also), and actually i've tried all available roms/psuedo-roms and there were always a few things that I liked/disliked about each.. sooo, I researched a bit and learned a lot about what's where in terms of the system workings for the A2 (and androids in general), and started to change things myself..
That being said, I am currently on a modded version of VictoryROM (i performed a bunch of these mods to Atrix Blaze first, but decided to wipe data (3x) and go with the minimalistic V-rom and start over)...
I changed the fonts, dropdown items, status bar items, lockscreen, dockbar (hotseat), check/toggle buttons, etc.---> (For fun, see if you can spot where I got everything from! Big props and credit goes to those from which I borrowed!! ) I also tweaked out the build.prop and installed milestone overclock (still at stock 1000, but will probably go up to 1100), so I can fine tune the speed.
Not through tweaking and experimenting yet, but so far I'm calling it the altROM (not really - i'm not a rom baker, so it's kind of a joke..)

btw, i did all of this without adb or decompiling anyph apks - mostly just used APK Manager for the unzipping, modding and rezipping, GIMP for color editing, google search, windows explorer, and root explorer to do the final push.
and i've only had this phone (my 1st "smartphone") since January..so, point being anyone can do it

Looks Awesome. Can't wait for this ROM either. Atrix 2 developing is really picking up after a slow start. Thanks to everyone.

@alteredlikeness
You post could have been written by me. I'm in the same boat so-to-speak. I have to ask. What's in the SystemUI.apk? I'm wanting to make my settings menus (all) black backgrounds.
ROM Toolbox is an invaluable tool. I just changed my battery indicator.

The SystemUI.apk has the quickpanel (dropdown) stuff, and the status bar icons, etc.
Not sure yet about all the settings menus yet, i'll get back to you on that. But i'm pretty sure that they are .9.png files, so it's best not to try and edit unless you are familiar with the process. You can usually just swap - copy over - the exixting .9.png files from different roms with no problem. I'll look into it more and let you know (if you don't figure it out yourself first)

Cool. I just used the icon changer in ROM Toolbox to swap the battery icon. Notice the reboot icon/script I have on my screenshot. That came from RTbox as well. Kinda cheating. But I have changed out some .apks (not really all the difucult either using RTbox.
I have a Linux box so my methods will be a little different than most here using Windows apps. Thanks.

What files did u change for the wifi color I've also been wanting to change my 4g icon
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium

Thanks for your review !
IMO, difference between these ROMs is themes, no more.
Speed, smooth ... are same; bugs, lag and something that locked by Moto are same of course!
Simple reason : all of them based on stock 2.3.5/2.3.6 of Moto for Edison.
Things that I hate on based stock Rom for Atrix 2, have not been fixed yet in all available "cook" Rom now :
- Lock screen
- Light sensor problem
- Lag touching when use virtual keyboard (tried many keyboard apps)
- Freeze when slide to answer (same as Milestone 3 yrs ago)
- Hidden functions/options in Setting menu
- True mobile Hotspot (no needed for sign-in AT&T account)
- Free-call apps compatibility like Viber, Skype, Yahoo Messenger (video call)
- Better camera quality (color, saturation, exposure...)
...
So, change will come if :
- Motorola releases new Rom for A2 (or at least fix all bugs that I listed above)
- Bootloader unlocked for flashing AOSP or any full/ported Android ROM.
Because it's AT&T version so I'm sure Moto still locks things that they think it should be or AT&T want special Rom for them like this way.
Hope and wait now !

There are nine or so .png files in SystemUI.apk/res/drawable-hdpi called stat_sys_wifi_signal_(something)
I think the 4g icons are also in there.. under zz_moto_stat_sys_data_(something)
You can just swap out those .png files with the ones you want. PM me or search if you want a detailed explanation as to how..

@vinamilk
That's one way to look at it. Anothèr is despite motorola/at&t's efforts to keep the phone locked down, development is underway. The community is working it out. Its a testament to how good this handset really is and the potential here. Is the glass half empty or half full? ;-) in the end, our accomplishments will be all the sweeter for having to go the extra mile.

KEB64, if Google gives you full ROM (AOSP), it's more easier for you to re-build, "cook" or tweak yourself. But Rom that based on stock which locked/deleted functions for special request from Carrier agent is hard to tweak more.
I appreciate the effort of all Devs here but we have to admit a lot of limitation when cooking Rom from locked stock Rom.

Understood.

The base is ee-19. This was not built on pick and pack or anything else. The rom may use piece of a code some where out of another rom or from some one. That I added to work. Everything in the rom was implemented by myself.
Battery Icon is only red when below 10%

The following was taken in order of stock clock to 1300mhz. On Otb Reloaded 1.6. Govenor set to performance to keep cpu from scaling down and scheduler was the defualt. Benchmarks I am not going to argue over so don't bother waisting your time. Performance may also vary as I find either otb or voltage control to be weird at times. Also these are not peaks.
What was removed:
Bloat uscc apps, Some samsung useless memory hog apps, Touchwiz launcer, Stock dialer, Stock mms, Probably some other stuff that is minor,
What was addded:
Phoenix reloaded boot animation from my desire phoenix, 100 percent charge and discharge battery icons/mods, Go launcher, Go plug-ins, Go Contacts, Go Sms, Themed menus, Themed icons, Reboot options, Puzzle lock, Themed market. Blue themed gingerbread keyboard Miui Themed music player, Superuser, Esfile Explorer, Voltage control app, Updated apps that are on the market, Updated host so adds are blocked (No need to use any type of blocker), added malware fix and possibly forgetting something else.
Tweaks done not found in any other rom for the mes:
Entire rom was optimized. This means that rendering images will be quicker in the included apps, possibly gained battery life, and a smaller foot print to boot.
Apps that receive updates or stock apps people may not like that is still in the rom. Are moved to data on boot. This means no duplicates in system or data when the app would get a update. Also means some stock apps can be removed from manage applications.
Entire rom was zip aligned when built.
Added zipalign on boot to the data partition. Why only the data partition? Only it should need done since the rom was. Google zipalign to see what it really does.
Added memory tweaks.
Added ram tweaks so the rom wasn't so laggy. It also will allow multi-tasking a bit better. You will see the quickness once installed. Also by the above screen shots. This should help with battery life also. I play to much to document the truth or not so someone will have to see. There is also some other features I may be missing out on.
Install Instuctions:
Download the following file and place it on you sd-card:http://2fastroms.com/dm_eds/download.php?id=20
Will be under install instructions.
FIRST DISABLE LAG FIX and be on ee19.
Wipe/format data followed by format system. (Even though the updater-script does this. I still get issues not doing it. Then install zip > Phoenix-Reloaded-1.1.zip
Wait for install to finish and reboot. Reboot may take a min or two so don't freak out. Once booted proceed to the setup instructions.
Setup Instuctions:
First you need to setup go sms to work right since the stock was removed. Go to it and open it. Read the little messages if you want. Then hit menu when at the message screen. Go to settings>important tips>stock sms releated. Check mark stock sms uninstalled. Go back to settings and mms settings. Set maximum mms size to 1m (Max uscc allows).
Go back to settings and Send Settings. Check mark split large messages.
Go back to the home screen. Hit the contacts icons setting it to use default go contacts. Also dial *228 for good measure. I believe this is it.
Questions:
Help I am roaming or get poor service. Try to move from the spot you are if signal is low and perform a prl update using *228. If it doesn't work try a few times with better signal till the roaming indicator goes off. If it doesn't I am not to sure what to say.
Help my data keeps going dormant. Trying to access the web you get a prompt about your connection. Only way I found to fix it was to odin 2.1 checking repartition. Then update to ec-10 to ee-19. You might get away with doing ec-10. I have yet to find the real cause to it but this isn't the only rom affected.
Support:
Official support will be at my forum at the following link: http://www.2fastroms.com So if you have a problem and I don't answer on here right away please make a post on the forum. Where one of my staff will relay the message to me.
Credits:
Ante for the base on the market.
Fab for the gingerbread keyboard port.
Avreen & Nrosier for the style of the original Battery Icon.
The guys that designed the g4 icons.
Phidelt82 for the one jar file to enable puzzle lock.
Opps forgot a credit that I didn't mean to. Which was the creator of some of the blue icons and a few other pieces from the steel blue theme. I know Phidelta82 I believe did the port but unsure of the real maker at the moment. In which if someone kindly said who or they contacted me. I will add the said person.
Also for future reference before pulling something out of my rom to put in another one. At least ask first. Don't take it the wrong way as I don't mind to help or share anything. The other thing is it may not work or cause other issues depending on what is nabbed.
First!. Had to say it
Keep up the good work

Just when you think you have it idiot proof, they come out with a better idiot.
Did you flash it or just first to post in the thread? lol Thanks either way. If you flashed it let me know how it goes. I missed the icons on the power menu but I will get them when I get done building aosp.
Nice Work
Hey i flashed it and it works well only thing i see is when i switched to OTB ver 1.3 the bootanimation has the android flashing in and out while the orig us cellular animation is still running. not a big deal thou.
also the media scanning icon in the status bar is sometimes themed and somtimes not. again not a big deal.
otherwise very nice work
Edit: i flashed this in CwM2.5 then put 3.0 back on so didnt think to ask if this was amend or edify script?
Awesome, its great to see more devs for the mesmerize. Welcome
My thoughts exactly. Looks like quality work too. May through this on and try it out next day or two when I get some time. Thanks to you and all the devs for making this phone rock.
Tap-a-Talked.
I flashed this last night, also running the tw1.3 kernel, could use a custom boot animation to fix the dueling boot animation, also the launcher still seems a little laggy but everything works and looks nice, would the ec10 no clock work with this? I may just give it a whirl and check later today seems like quality work. It worked fine flashing over pnp v.5 with just a cache and dalvik wipe.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The launcher isn't laggy if lagfix is enabled. Then go to adw settings > zoom effect > set it to around 400. Then screen pref's > desktop scrolling > set to around 225.
If you still get lag then it isn't a problem with the rom but the kernel my phone runs better on the stock kernel with no lag fix. With any of the kernels I get constant force closes and reboots. Along with lag out the rear. Not talking crap about the kernels but a few reasons why it happens is the scheduler sucks and so does the default govenor. Like right now I am running otb also where my phone hates it. On the stock voltage settings. I can even lower nearly every clock by 100mv's and my phone will run fine but still the same problems as not touching the voltages.
I recommend to ditch sio then use cfq or bfq as my phone seems to like those a little better. The other is conservative plain sucks for performance. It might be better for battery life but that is a debate for another day. On demand doesn't seem to be much better really. I plan to compile a kernel and see what I can do with it.
As for the boot animation I have a boot animation made. Just can't get it to work on the mes but work fine on the desire. Still have to look at that. The ec-10 no clock I am guessing removes the clock on the taskbar? If so it should be fine. I haven't looked at it as I prefer the clock where it is .
Can someone do me a favor and go to my forum website using the web browser? Does the web browser reboot when the pop up for tapatalk comes up or is it just me? All other web sites work fine that I tried but none have tapatalk I tried.
Edit: This also doesn't you a updater-script but your old plain update-script. So clockworkmod 2.5 is needed. Forgot to put that in the first post I converted it to updater where it installs but won't boot so I have to look at it when I get time.
Tried the no clock mod and it works fine, also tried the browser and I had no reboot of it at your site, though previously when I loaded the rom the wallpaper wasn't there when I loaded the no clock mod it was. Did some fooling around in voltage control 1300oc/25uv seems to have fixed the lag issue. Also changed scheduler to cfq.

Odd it does for me As I said my phone hates the kernels we have... The wallpaper should have loaded though as it does for me. As I put it as the default in the framework. I will have to look at it though.
whats quadrant scores on this ROM at stock speeds??? trying to figure out whether this is just a different, nice looking ROM or if its a lil faster....btw...nice work...great to see a new dev on the scene!!!
Where did you find the MiuiMusic?
My phone has none of those other problems. Still running the sio scheduler with no lag and to cc or reboots. Ran quadrent and got 1650. Music player works great too.

Quad scores I can tell you in a few... As for the miui I honestly couldn't tell you as I had it for a bit. I just changed some of the colors. I think I got it on here out of a tab part of the forum.
I was actually looking to see if anyone had tried to port the file manager. Found a few ports of the music app. None worked on the girls desire. So kept trying to find on that would work right.
Edit: Just ran quad 6 times. Using I believe the kernel gas has in his rom as I haven't changed it since I flashed his rom to check out the lockscreens. My phone hates this kernel but with setcpu to set the governor to performance on the stock clock. Using cfq I pulled on the first run a 1510 then peaked at a 1598. I wouldn't expect what I did to show much in a bench but will affect image rendering when loading the apps I have installed.

You guys suck then as I am not that lucky, Guess it is time for me to due something to mine to get a new one since plastic polish and the mes screen doesn't work to well... It creates what looks like cracks if you blow on the phone or from the grease on your fingers. Pretty annoying...
Uscc has a Zach screen and phone protector so far its the best I've seen. It costs 30 bucks but is worth it to me. Its military grade originally made for field gps and radios bonds permanently to phone also includes a lifetime warrenty. Salesman said couldn't cut with knife didn't believe him but gf kid proved him right. One associated swooping later was very impressed also have very sore hand lol

It has a screen protector now. This was the week I got it and somehow got two big scratches before I even started really using it I don't even remember the brand I got but is the rubbery type feeling one with the lifetime warranty.
Yep I've had the zagg invisible shield protectors for many phones. I was thrilled when uscc started stocking them. I'm rough on phones (just ask my wife) and these things are indestructible.

Awesome, thank you for the info. I accidently came across the first one I had and I was like HELL YAH. lol so i have not really looked at anything else. The launcher they are working on with the fascinate built on top of touchwiz so everything works. Their latest test build boot loops for me.
Got a link? I don't pay much attention to the fascinate/mess crowd more so do I on the desire.
Any way we can get this for the showcase

[ROM] dReWs-Ginger_FauxICS v.Beta2 (HTC Hero CDMA) **Updated 11/06/2011**

Ever since my laptop crashed with Vista, which also happened to bork my recovery, I've been running Linux (Ubuntu 10.10) on it. Since I was now running Linux natively on my laptop, I decided to try to cook a ROM just to do it. With that said, I'd like to introduce to you my very first attempt at cooking with Android... Ginger_FauxICS (v.Alpha3.1).
This ROM was built using kushdeck's gingerbread-hero-deck 1.3 as a base. The only thing I added was a Juwell's RAM optimization script which I had modified ever so slightly, ACS's ICSLauncher, and Pins Music Mod. From the Ice Cream Sandwich system dump, I also added the ICS bootanimation, font, and some icons. I also swapped out some pngs in the framework-res.
For that all around ICS look, you can also flash DameonAndMeagan's ICS Ring Lock Mod which you can grab from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312431
This was originaly a ROM that I baked for a friend of mine since my Hero is no longer activated. When I flashed it on my friend's phone, everything worked and it seems to be running pretty snappy.
Please note that I am in no way a developer of any kind. I'm just a dood that likes to tinker with electronics. All I did was piece together different elements created by the hardworking devs of our awesome community. All the credit goes to them.
Some features:
ICS themed CM7.1 (Launcher, Fonts, Icons, etc.)

Deodexed
Apps2Ext
and more...

Installation Instructions:
- Download ROM from here:
http://sirthumpalot.blogspot.com/2011/10/rom-overview-drews-gingerfauxics.html
- Place ROM on the root of your sdcard
- Put phone into recovery
- Navigate to "Backup and Restore" and backup your current setup first (Optional but I always backup just in case"
- Once fully backed up, wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache twice. I wipe twice just because I'm OCD like that.
- Go to "Format and Mount" and format boot, cache, data, and system. (If you're curently running and ext4 partition on your sdcard already, you may also want to format the sdext as well)
- From there, flash the ROM (gapps with vvm already baked into the ROM)
- You're done.
**User TIPS**
Per InsaneHien
- ROM can be flashed using Darchstar's Amon RA recovery if you resign the zip using PPCGeeks Android APK & Zip Signer program
- Enabling 16-bit transparency in advanced settings speeds up homescreen scrolling
**Known Issues**
Per gidkid - "When you tap the soft home button on the launcher while on the main homescreen, when you return from the helicoptor view, the soft buttons and the app drawer button are gone. They return with a quick reboot of the launcher, or after some time using other apps..."
Solution: Another solution other than restarting the launcher is also simply pressing the back button. That worked for me anyway.
Also per gidkid - "...while scrolling the app drawer, there are some hangups..."
Solution: I'm not sure how to fix this as of yet as it may be an issue caused by how the launcher app reacts to our phone's device limitations. I'll see if I can work something out.
If you dig this ROM and would like to donate to this project, please donate to the Devs listed above instead (Their donation links should be listed in their corresponding URLs). They work hard to enhance the user experience we get from our devices and for that we owe them a debt of gratitude.

Just like many others in this country, I've been struggling to find work and have lost my house to foreclosure. We must hold onto what makes this country great. Work towards, once again, having a government of the people, for the people, by the people. We are the 99%. Thanks for reading.

Maybe I meant 3.x or whateverz. Basically it needs to support the newer scripting as opposed to the ones we've grown to know and love back in the Amon RA recovery days. Miss those days, man!

Looks amazing. Always good to see something new around this forum. Thanks! I'll try it out and report back soon. If everything runs well, this could be a great ROM.
Just flashed this, and it was kinda slow until I enabled 16-bit transparency in the advanced settings. Now the scrolling speed on home screen is fast.
Also, this works with Amon's RA recovery. The ROM just needs to be signed so that it'll flash.

Thanks for the tip on the scrolling speed. I'll add it to the original post.
In regards to getting it to flash with Amon RA, did you have to change the script type for it to work?
So far, I'm liking this ROM. It looks nice, and while it was a bit of a shock going back to AOSP/CM after a while with Sense, it was worth it for the ICS looks.
It's not slow, not by a long shot. It's not perfectly smooth, either, and, especially while scrolling the app drawer, there are some hangups, with or without 16 bit scrolling enabled.
The one little bug I found was that when you tap the soft home button on the launcher while on the main homescreen, when you return from the helicoptor view, the soft buttons and the app drawer button are gone. They return with a quick reboot of the launcher, or after some time using other apps, but it's slightly inconvenient while they're gone.
Other than that, great ROM, great contribution. I'll be running this as my daily pending GPS and other tests.

I appreciate the detailed feedback. I believe you can simply press the back button when the soft buttons and app drawer disappear. I'm not sure what causes that unfortunately and I may not be able to look into it anytime soon cuz I have about two weeks to pack up my entire house to move. I'll see what i can do. I'm glad ya dig it. Cheers!

CREDITS:
First and foremost, a huge thanks to the guys at Samfirmware for making this possible!
This rom incorporates the work of many AndroidCentral and XDA users.
Huge thanks to the development community.
This is Open Source!
Want to make or edit your own personal rom?
Take a look at my personal kitchen!
Known Issues:- If your sdcard does not have a folder called "clockworkmod", you must create it prior to installation. It should exist if you've ever made a Nandroid backup.
- 4G Toggle button exists in scroll-able toggle mod.
- 4G Toggle button is missing from the 9-lock mod, to enable 4g, have to go into Settings>Wireless and Network>4G Settings>4G (turn on 4g) or get a widget from the market
You've got questions, here's some answers!
Can't figure out how to make the battery percentage appear in 9-lock?
It's under Settings > Lockscreen Settings > Statusbar Settings
Want the battery icon, and not just the percentage?
Same deal as before, except you have to hide battery icon, and then un-hide it. Wait a moment.
I really miss my old transparent messaging app, can I have that back?
You can now! I've just released a few variations of transparent Gingerbread messaging!
How do I use my own ringtone, alarm, and notification mp3s?
Create a folder on your SD card called "media".
Inside of that create "audio".
Inside of that create:
"ringtones" for ringtones.
"alarms" for alarms.
"notifications" for notifications.
Ah, Swype.

Unfortunately, since the Froyo version that initially came on our phone, we've been employing the latest and greatest versions with better features. But all of them have still been betas, and apparently this particular one expired today. I do not know if, or how to modify it to avoid expiration. Nor do I currently know where to pickup the next available version. Instead, I recommend doing what I have just finished doing. Install the swype beta installer.
Here's how:
1. First, using a file explorer delete the following files:
- /system/app/Swype.apk
- /system/lib/libswypecorexxxxx.so [the x's stand in for the exact number]
2. Next, head here to download the installer.
3. The rest is pretty self explanatory.
You do have to sign up to be a tester if you're not already, I have been for some times. I assure you, it's a harmless process and won't flood your email account.
I wish I could make this easier, but for some time now, Swype has only been releasing beta versions and they will all expire at some point. If anyone has a newer working Swype I can use in the next version, I'll look into it.
As a bonus, if you follow my instructions, then your Swype personal dictionary will carry into the new Swype beta!
How Do I Use This ROM?
Regularly updated installation information available on the download page.
Random you mentioned in the other thread that Gtalk video works and it does but is that without being able to switch to front facing camera?
EDIT: I know I was supposed to thank you for this rom I assumed you knew I have been on EC05 Hawk. Also was I supposed to say "first"
Looks great RandomKing..
My time on the Epic 4g has passed but my wife still has hers and this is definitely a ROM I will be considering and trying out on her device since she's waiting for me to update her to GB and get off EC05...

I'm loving the ROM so far. I've already flashed a few others just to try out and Thunderhawk has been the winner for me so far. I do have a question though: is anyone else having any issues with wifi randomly turning off and on? I made sure that in the settings it is set to never turn off.

This... Not tryina nic-pic but that standard GB batter indicator just isn't cutting it.. I guess my question would be if there is a theme in the theme section of the forums that would work with this rom. I know we are waiting on the lockscreen mod from maddoggin but is there something I can use temporarily?
Also, Randomking, I saw in the other thread that you said it was the TH2.0 Rom that had the sexy black keyboard... How would I go about pulling the keyboard from 2.0 and installing it in 3.0.5? Yes... I'm a newb at all this stuff but thanks to you all, i'm learning quite quickly!

I'm not fully acquainted with framework-res modifying, so I generally wait until I find a suiting one and then modify it in-line with my own requirements. So... soon.
As far as the keyboard, open the .zip file, and under /System/App you'll find Swype.apk. Just drag it into the matching spot of the other .zip. I recommend using 7zip.

It has the AIO Hotspot, Volume, CRT, and Overscroll Glow features, but no Lockscreen mod yet.
When I can put in everything I require, I will remove the WIP tag from the title and fully modify the OP, until then, the screenshots are slightly inaccurate. Working on it. Version 3.1 will be the first full version.
been running this rom for a few hours now with no problem. My 3g speeds are faster on this rom for some reason (im on cricket not sprint). thanks for all your hard work.

Ok... So dont mess with the theming just yet... gotcha...
Now with the keyboard. I located the TH2.0 zip on my harddrive... Opened it, found the Swype.apk and moved it to my desktop...
Is there a way for me to copy the Swype apk to my SD card and push it in using ES File Explorer or will I have to actually drag and drop it into the TH3.0.5 Zip and then reflash?
**edit**
Just tried to push it using EX File Explorer and got mad force closes when I disabled Go KB and enabled Swype... Dragged and dropped Swype apk into the system/app folder of TH3.0.2 and i'm about to reflash... *crosses fingers*
**edit**
Still no go... Flashed using Clockwork and upon the first boot I got a Swype FC. I guess i'll stick with Go Keyboard for now...
I had to use root explorer es wouldnt work for some reason. just copy the file to root system/app
you might try going into settings, applications, manage, all, swype ... clear data.
So it isn't trying to use data saved by the other apk.
what is the best way way to flash this, I currently using ThunderHawk 2.3.4
thanks

I ended up using Root Explorer because when I tried to paste it in using ES, it would paste but Swype wouldn't show up in my list of keyboards.
Can you confirm that the keyboard from TH2.0 is the sexy black one? Is that the one you moved over?

I didn't even think of that, but I also dropped the Swype apk from the 2.0 rom into the system/apps folder of 3.0.5 and then just reflashed the rom and still got FC's as soon as the phone booted up.
I llooved this rom on EC05.

This is an ongoing developer project to make way for a modification that will entirely transform your device, but retain the aesthetics and the experience of your phone. I know you've seen tablet mode roms before, they change two lines in your build.prop file which you could easily edit yourself in seconds and maybe throw a keyboard in there to make it work better. It's a start, but this ain't enough. This thing has potential, but it is wasted the moment you try to stuff a full blown tablet into your poor phone. Yet we all know our high res phones can very well handle more than silly 1-column layouts. So the magic must be in between somewhere, a place that Google must have overlooked and left blank. Yes, this rom strives to drop your device into tablet mode, but it won't stop there, it will reshape and redefine ICS to make it all a useful addition and not just a cute novelty. we're calling it: Hybrid (or Phablet) Mode, best of both worlds.

Omg lol awesome.
This ROM is amazing - impressive UI.
My quick tinkering with the Paranoid system settings came up with this:
Tablet Mode and Hybrid Mode both ticked.
Framework-res-DPI = custom 175. (Notification appropriate for our display.)
SystemUI DPI = Tablet. (Lock screen resize for our display.)
Again if we could please have an optional flashable for the 3.30 kernel (as it provides better battery then 3.36.)
This is a refreshing change from vanilla cm9.
2 Things I've noticed:
A) Gmail looks great, however trying to Open any email from the Inbox folder gives a 'Gmail has stopped' toast popup. Opening from All Mail folder works. Weird.
B) When phone is locked. If you press back or menu, the front face lights turn on but do not turn off.
We thank you XMC.

Awesome man, you've been all over these ROMs.
What's the reason for the A5 kernel, is something broken in A6? I'm assuming A5 means CM9 Alpha 5, or am I wrong?

A) Gmail looks great, however trying to Open any email from the Inbox folder gives a 'Gmail has stopped' toast popup. Opening from All Mail folder works. Weird.
B) When phone is locked. If you press back or menu, the front face lights turn on but do not turn off.
We thank you XMC.

I think you swapped your values for framework-res and systemUI. Also, the 175 DPI for system doesn't work if you use the onscreen nav buttons -145 works pretty well. Clock on lockscreen gets cut off in landscape mode when using "tablet" DPI. 150 looks pretty good for the framework setting here.
As an FYI - I was able to boot it using the CM9 A5 kernel because as I was using that already and I'm not S-off, but wifi was borked. Once I flashed in the kernel from this build wifi was working, but I'll have to get back to you as far as battery goes. I got a lot of problems with battery levels on the a5 kernel, especially when rebooting my battery level seemed to be random.
I didn't wipe when I flashed and came from CM9 a5. I noticed a couple of my apps were missing, and when I tried to install from market, I got an error stating "missing shared library". Is this because I didn't wipe? Can anyone confirm if you are able to install Bank of America from market?
The thing I've noticed most about this ROM aside from the awesome UI is BLAZING speed. Market and browser come up and load pages instantly - probably twice if not triple the speed of CM9 A5

Yeah I did mix those up, accident
I don't use the onscreen nav buttons option.
Funny though, cos further testing got me to 145dpi for system also, great minds think alike.
Bug:
I found that an input field does not appear/allow setting individual applications 'custom dpi'.
Other than this I didn't find much wrong with this excellent rom!!!

It looks like the gapps is missing something in this ROM - I looked up the error and saw that people had this problem on other ROMs from time to time. I flashed the latest gapps from CM and found that not only was it resolved, but the apps were already there and didn't need to be reinstalled.
Here are my current settings for the look, feel, and behavior that I like best. I am kanging XMC's "hints" section
- Download and flash latest gapps if you run into library errors on any of your apps
- Set the font size to "Normal"
- Go into the Apex settings > dock settings, hold your phone in landscape, change the button quantity to 5, then back to 3. (Buttons shouldn't be crammed together anymore).
- Check "Auto Hide" in Settings, System, Statusbar, to finally get Fullscreen (or Hold power button, and press "Toggle StatusBar"). You can turn auto-hide off afterward, if you want status bar to be always visible.
- Launcher Settings: margins: NONE (If youre using Apex / Nova), show permanent searchbar: YES, Grid: 4x4, resize all widgets: YES, Wallpaper scrolling: On or off, your pref
- Paranoid settings:
- Tablet Mode and Hybrid Mode checked
- System default DPI: tablet
- User Default DPI: phone
- User Default UI: phone
- Framework-res DPI: Custom 150
- SystemUI DPI: Custom 145

I just could not get Apex launcher(and a bunch of user apps that don't seem to be optimized for tablet) to look good with the User UI set to tablet, and I'm never satisfied with the look of anything other than 4 x 4 as the icons and widgets go all wonky. As far as apps other than the launcher, It seems like it might be better to use the tablet UI for user apps to go through and see which ones look good and which don't at first, then set them up individually.
Edit: XMC, I'm convinced that you are either a robot, or you have multiple clones of yourself that all work on various dev projects. This ROM is absolutely the best thing I've seen for our device yet.
When I have everything set to tablet DPI values i cannot make phone calls it says force closed ... any suggestions?
LOVE THE ROM

[ROM][25 Feb 13]Desire XS version 1.1 [Sense 4.1 lite] [Android 4.0.4]

DESIRE XS Version 1.1
As you all pretty much know, while waiting for the ICS update for the Desire S there much anticipation among the community, even when HTC kept delaying the release we where always hopeful of what we might get, there was even speculation that we might get a nice sense 4 ui etc. But, no, when we finally did get an update it was a half finished rom full of bugs and sporting the bloat addled sense 3.6. HTC's response when asked why we didn't get a proper release or sense 4 was that our beloved Desire S just wasnt capable of handling either andriod 4.0.4 or sense 4 in any form, and what the released was the best we could expect.
Well the many talented Devs here at XDA set to work correcting the problem, both by fixing the "official" ICS update and through porting sense 4 to our device, and like a lot of you I jumped from rom to rom trying them all out but never quite found what I was looking for, so I set about making my own.
When I first started I had really only intended to do it for myself, after all I had never even decompiled an apk before, let alone tried to port my own rom, there was no way it would be good enough for the masses, but, then it turned out to work better than I ever expected it to, so I decided what the hell and uploaded it as a beta for people to poke at, in truth fully expecting people to tear it apart as they found bug after bug, instead, people loved it, offered encouragement and even started using it as there daily drivers.
Thanks to some hand holding by some of the fantastic devs here on xda, I started to learn the basics of smali editing so that I could start modifying the rom, and somewhere along the way I made a decision
HTC told use that the Desire S was unable to run ICS smoothly, nor could it handled sense 4 in any of its forms, so, I decided to prove them wrong. As a result I have mimicked a HTC release version as much as possible to show them what they should have given us instead of the garbage that they left use with, and this is the result
Desire XS version 1
Andriod 4.0.4 with HTC sense 4.1 lite based on the Desire X 1.18.401.1 RUU, running amidabuddha's b2b kernel.

I will work on the remaining bugs as quick as I can and post updates as quickly as possible but please remember this is all new to me and I am learning alot of things as I go along, so it will be a case of they are done when they are done.
If any of our more seasoned devs are willing to give a few pointers then their help would be greatly received.
Installation
As this rom has been fully odexed to mimic what you would get from HTC you require one of the following HBOOTS
7.00.1002
2.00.2002
2.00.0002
2.02.002
fblasot did a short write up on changeing your hboot HERE
I recommend that all users be on radio 20.76.30.0835U_3831.19.00.110 before installing this rom, if you have issues with camera corruption @ 5mp then you definatly need to update your radio
As there are substantial changes to Version 1 compared to RC1 a complete wipe is mandatory before flashing, if you do try it with just wiping the caches and then have any bugs appear, please try doing a full wipe and then see if the problems exist before posting.
Similarly, if you restore settings and data with Titanium Backup or a similar products then encounter any bugs, please try reflashing without restoring anything first and then post if the problems continue.
First boot can take a few minutes as the system builds the cache for the first time, and after initial setup the rom will take a few minutes to settle as it sort out checking for mail updates etc.
After first boot go to setting/ display and buttons/ Recent apps button and select press for menu, press and hold for recent apps. this will make your buttons function normally except that recent apps will be on long press menu rather than long press home.
HTC-DEV unlocked users, don't forget to flash the boot.img of your chosen kernel via fastboot after flashing the Rom. The boot.img can be found in-
/extra/Kernel/(yourchosenkernelname)/

Changelog
Desire XS Version 1.1
GPS.conf scripts have finished there travels and are now actually in the Rom.zip
The correct Romanian fonts have kick out the old ones and have made themselves at home, this means that the dialectics in third party keyboards should show correctly. However, despit several scuffles the HTC keyboard stubbornly refuses to show them. It will have been beaten into submission by the next patch.
Someone finally rescued the the notification drag bar from the rack its been strapped to, and after a quick spruce up its looking it's normal self again.
Friendstream has decided not to insist on always being so attached to Facebook and Twitter, and after some discussion, they have found away to give space to each other when needed. This means you can choose from the following in the installer:-
Friendstream + Twitter + Facebook
Friendstream + Twitter
Friendstream + Facebook
Facebook + Twitter (no Friendstream)
Facebook only
Twitter only
Nothing at all (for the really unsocial, like myself.)
The status bar has been feeling generous all of a sudden and has decided that 2 options on install wasn't enough to satisfy everyone, so to try and cover all bases you'll now be offered the following:-
Fully Stock, (no mods at all.)
QuickSettings only
Battery Mod only
Carrier Name always shown only
QuickSettings + Battery Mod
QuickSettings + Battery Mod + Carrier Name
Battery Mod + Carrier Name
QuickSettings + Carrier Name
The aroma script realised that sometimes people like to change their mind, and alter what they installed with the Rom. So now when you dirty flash the Rom it will automatically remove any unwanted default apps from the last time you flashed the Rom. (the aroma would like you to note that this will only work on the installed apps and not on updates from the market, it advises that you uninstall any updates first before running the script.)
Patched kernel felt a bit left out, and after throwing a tantrum has been allowed to join b2b kernel in the installer, just be careful when playing with patched, its been reported that he could possibly be a bit grumpy sometimes.
After getting a little self concious over its extra size the "reboot to recovery" icon has gone to a slimming camp for a bit, one of the more traditional icons has stepped in to cover it position till it gets back.
The record button in Notes has stopped sucking its stomach in after it realised it look ridiculous and looks like its normal self again, which we've assured it looks much better.
Desire XS Version 1
Base has grown up and is now 1.18.401.1
Your Carrier will no longer scream for your attention by permanently sitting in the notification bar yelling "here I am, here I am" (there will be flashable zip available that will invite it back if they find they miss it.)
As all it wanted to do was sit there and look pretty, Quicksettings has given the Power Efficiency toggle a slap and sent it packing for the time being. (I believe this code is there ready to be implemented in Sense 4+, I may look at porting the rest of the code from 4+ to get it working once once I release version 1.)
Build.prop redone, no more black screens in certain apps
Extra files that had taken up residence in the /system/bin have all been evicted
Services.jar has been given some fuss and now no longer feels the need to randomly throw errors at things to get attention
The free version of dropsync will no longer have a hissy fit over not having the pro key is installed and start doing what its supposed to. (hey, I had a blond moment on a system dump, guess I should stop working on the rom at 4:30 in the morning after a bottle of rum.)
Apps such as GPS Status and toolbox will once again believe that we have a compass.
Friendstream has stopped sulking and will now allow you to add you twitter account.
Aroma installer decided that just clumping all the apps into big bundles was perhaps a little lazy, and now offers a listing of all the apps so you can can decide exactly what extras take up residence in your phone
The GPS thought it might be nice to at least know which continent its starting on, so has convinced aroma to let you choose where you are during install.
Bluetooth has spawned some new profiles and has reluctantly conceded that it should identify itself as saga not as VilleC2, hopefully it will no longer snub certain car kits.
Google Now has doubled its wardrobe and offers a choice of original or inverted outfits when you install it.
The injuries to the music app in RC1 have been healed so you can once again choose what app is shown in the bottom right of the car app.
After advice from its creator B2B kernel has moved in to run everything, I will make up some flashable zips with the latest patched verson if people want them, but patched can be a bit grumpy and sometimes throws tantrums.
Fed up with being crowded the libs folder has moved out from the system partition and into the system_lib partition where it can stretch its legs.
The rest of the system partition on seeing how comfy the libs were also decided to stretch out and is now fully odexed.
Fed up with hearing what a crap job they where doing the camera and media profiles have got together and done what they can to try and improve picture quality, this has resulted in an increase in the jpeg files weight to warn those that perhaps might be watching there sd space.
about a million other little things that I'm forgetting right now.
Desire XS RC 1
hwcomposer.msm7x30.so bug at boot is now fixed
HTC sound enhancer modded to include extra profiles (all credit belongs to lyapota.)
Google Now added as an optional extra. (not sure where I first got this so all credits to the original dev.)
Users now have the option to install a Rosie with seven homescreens instead of the usual five. (My thanks the lowveld for his guidance on this.)
Disappearing lockscreen icons will no longer be an issue
Video Preview should be fixed for those few who had some corruption when leaving the preview active
Autobrightness and captive backlight levels tweaked
fonts updated, all dialectic's should be fixed
other bits and pieces that I'm forgetting about
Desire XS beta 2.01
Cleaned out lib partition and all apps that can be downloaded from the app store removed from /system partition, users will now have around 60-70MB of free space in /system to play with (That is assuming you install all the additional mods.)
Tidied up build.prop, a number of tweaks have been removed while I go through and see which ones are really needed.
Auto brightness levels adjusted, those who had problems please test and let me know if they need tweaking further.
Removed Network Selection and settings from Quick settings, we're not a cdma device
Install is now aroma scripted so people can choose mods at install.
GPU rendering will no longer be enabled by default in dev options.
A few bits and pieces I have probably forgotten about.
This is the first time I have ever scripted aroma so please ensure you backup before installing just in case (I would also backup your sdcard after you backup your rom to be double safe, unlikely that anything that bad would happen but never hurts to be over cautious. The script will offer to do a full wipe, I would advise you use it as it will also clear out some files on your sdcard that are used by the system.
I have taken the system dump from my phone where everything seems to be working fine so hopefully bugs will be to a minimum and everything will work as it should for everybody.
Oh also this script is a little rough and it occurs to me that some apps I perhaps should have had left singular in the options menu of the installer,(such as Gmail and youtube) if people let me know what apps in particular they would like to be able to choose individaly, I will update the script accordingly for the next release (which if all goes well and people no longer report camera issues etc I hope to be at least the RC version.)
Desire XS beta 2
Added APM
Added a basic menu to Rosie
Activated QuickSettings
(Experimental) Added some tweaks to build.prop
(Experimental) Patched services.jar ready for Supercharger script
(Experimental) Activated HTC Recent Apps Fusion.
All the experimental parts are things that could have an effect on performance and maybe removed depending on reports from users.
All Smali edits have been down by hand so if there are any problems I should be able to track down the issue fairly quickly.
Desire XS beta 1.6
Camera 100% fixed, all modes now work, including
Taking stills while filming
Burst mode
Face recognition
Smile capture
HDR
Panoramic Mode
Everything else
Camera.apk restored to the correct one (taken from lowvelds fallout rom) so HD record and burst modes restored
Wifi Tethering now fixed
Desire XS beta 1.5
As personal issues are going to keep me away for the next week I am releasing an early update I haven't done any where near as much as I would like but hopefully it will be enough to keep you all going till I can get back at it at the end of the week.
Video playback is now fixed and working flawless
Removed some G apps that can be downloaded from market, (Video, Books, G+), and Tell HTC software
Updated chainfire supersu to latest version
Added 4EXT Recovery Updater. (At least gives you guys a way to reboot into recovery). Thanks to maddmax82 over at 4ext.net for permission.
Modded the keyboard files so that the menu key now behaves like the app switcher key on the Desire X so you can access the Recent Apps List. Press it once for your recent apps, long press it for menu. This can be reversed in the settings so that it pulls up menu on a single press and recent app on long press. This is just a temp solution till I have time to implement recent apps properly. I will also load up a flashable zip to change recent apps to the search key for those that prefer it, but beaware that this will remove all search functions from the search key, even on long press.
Beats now really does work, and doesn't just show a fancy message anymore. (got a couple of people to test it as i'm too deaf to hear the damn difference.)
Updated kernel to Tweaked X
Desire XS beta 1

I'm waiting to solve this bugs, and thanks for the rom

No, that is based on the rom from the One X, which has full sense and has been resized to fit our devices, this is from the Desire X, and is sense lite, but doesn't require any resizing at all.
Due to the Desire X having very similar spec to the Desire S, this rom runs real smooth, even before overclocking, at 1.5Ghz though it really flys.

You should ask Team Venom to allow you to use Venom Tweaks. The more often I use various ROMs - the more I understand that the presence of Tweaks can really make the ROM to stand out among others. And I believe that this ROM + Venom Tweaks could actually become a big benefit, especially since there is no resizing difference or issue like some Sense 4 ROMs have/had

Team venom doesn't allow anyone to use their tweaks, no exceptions. Most of the tweaks probably won't work anyways considering this isn't a full sense ROM.

What is sense4.1 lite?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
Sense 4.1 lite is the version of Sense found on the Desire X. It's called lite since it doesn't have all the features like 3D animations, fancy lockscreen, or full Sense 4 launcher like the One X/S ROMs do. The good thing is that being a minimal rom, it will probably be bug free, have no resize errors, and be very fast.
