I found a little tricky way to make google play stay as "market" on your homescreen
all you have to do is pin it there as market before the update and it stays market with google play logo.
if its already updated just go into seettings/applications and clear data and put in on your home screen.
just in case you (like myselft) hate google play

this only works if the rom doesn't have an updated apk. Go launcher as well as other launcher have the functionality to rename and change icon, but thanks
Don't BLEEEP with google. Have you watched Prison Break?
Sent from Aperture Science. You Monster.
or use Desktop Visualizer from the market
Can make any app launch with any icon and say anything.
Like I have the Dolphin Browser user the Chrome Icon and say Browser.
I just hide app labels in Apex. I know what the icons are, haha. Nice workaround though.

Well that & allowing the carriers to have control over when you & I get the O/S updates!? :banghead:

They were looking for a way to combine music, books, movies and app store, and i don't hate the idea. They do all go together. Do I like the name Google Play Store, no, should still say just Google Store, Google Music, Google Books ext, but what can you do, they wanted some uniformity.

I hear what you're saying, but the name "play store" just makes me think of one of those netted in areas for kids, filled with colored balloons.
They could have called it "Google's Get What You Need" or "Google's Get What You Want", or something more creative & in line with what they are trying to provide.. My 2 cents.

I don't feel that they do "go together". The combined app is a way for google to spam users with ads. I particularly find it offensive that I can't rent a movie on a rooted device, but they don't do the root check before loading the app - they only do it after you rent a movie and try to play it.
I would love to see settings to select which sections that show up, but it will never happen since that would decrease the ad spam they cam throw in your face.
The name is actually offensive. I don't play with my phone. It is a serious tool. I can see the ad people at apple getting the campaign ready now - "Play with Android - work with the iWhatever." and the tag at the end that says that of course play is better (when you are done working) on the more serious iWhatever.

Are you a visual person? Try the image search feature that has endless scrolling results (Tip: this also works for any search result). Then easily swipe through image previews and click straight through to the image host site.
Now, do you see the mic option on the homepage? Our investment in voice search continues in our Android App and works great for searches like map locations as well as web search. This works especially well when looking for “Instant answers” which give you quick and relevant answers for things like movies, stock quotes, flight status and local listings.
Just say “movies,” for a quick result of movie listings, theaters and show times nearby, or say the flight information you are looking for, we will show you the departure, arrival, and other relevant information such as traffic, weather, news, and hotels details.
Voice search is also great when it comes to your local business listings. Give it a try, even something complex, hold the phone to your ear and speak, or press the mic button—it’s that simple.
The Android app also has a pretty smooth mapping feature. First, Bing will automatically find your current location. You can then easily discover new places by category such as restaurants, banks, theaters and you can choose whether you want walking or driving directions. Swipe through each step of your directions, and check out how fast the map pans and zooms. For times when you only have one hand free and can’t pinch, there is the handy zoom-out button.
There are a bunch of other features we’d love to tell you about, like local listing reviews, ratings and news. But rather than drone on about them, just download the app from your Android’s Marketplace, give it a spin and let us know what you think.

I don't understand why they want to make it exclusive to Verizon. MS doesn't need profit but user share. One does not build user base by being exclusive.
thanks for posting this!
Thanks a lot man, these exclusive deals are really annoying. Only Verizon can get Skype, Bing, and NFL Mobile? That's not right...
Thanks alot for posting this!
Is this a patched version of the apk or the same 'exclusive' Verizon one?
I would love to get that Sprint exclusive Blackboard app...

God bing sucks
I downloaded bing and searched for "Health Clubs and Fitness", and bing doesn't even list the Gold's gym I go to 5 miles from my house.
went to Google maps and did the same search, and of course, it lists Gold's as the third result. Right where it should be since it's the third closest gym to my house. Not only that, but the search results for Google all show a pic of the location, not so with bing.
deleted bing. I don't have time for a search engine that is still a beta. Actually, calling it a beta is being too kind. bing is simply a cheap knockoff of a search engine compared to Google
Thought it was kinda cool until i realized theres no flash. Uninstalled
Any way to map to search button? I might a actually use it xD.
I'm annoyed with MS until they give me their native MSN app

Yeah it consume a lot of data but if you r unlimited it doesnt matter. There is also option that you can save some song on your sd card and listen them offline.

Has this been updated so thdt offline music is stores on sd instead of internal? Its been my biggest complaint since it first came out and i stopped using it.

The older version (just "Google Music" app) has been able to store to the SD card for offline storage for quite some time.

Post your main use for your Android / iPhone /WinPhone
I think alot of people are really very curious..
Whats the main reason you NEED your Phone?
and then I should probably also mention that antiquated and frivolous use, practically all but forgotten these days.... "Making Phone Calls"
Some of you younger folks may not know what that is.. but I do believe several manufacturers actually still do support this function.
and then theres "SMS".. several phones are still carrying the torch on this one as well.. probably for sentimental reasons

The Google Nexus 4
Google tells us exactly what its made for:
"Play with Your favorite Google Apps"
"Use an 'amazing' Photo Sphere camera"
"Access your favorite entertainment on Google Play"
"Puts the best of Google in the palm of your hand"
"ZIP around the web" (yes, this has nothing to do with your carrier, eh?.. your hardware will make the internet faster... ya.. ok..)
"Experience 3D graphics and gameplay"
"Switch between multiple apps"
So... to summarize, these phones are made, specifically, for:
Putting Google Products in your hand
Use Google Apps
Entertain yourself with Google Play
Making you a Googlephile
Make you Googly with Google
Turning you into a Googlebot
woohoo...
cool
Sounds like the little green Android Robot is Google's graphical representation of its end user
I'm sure there's an internal Google memo to that effect somewhere..

I have noticed that the Phone Search options under the Google Now settings are severely limited on the Nexus 5. On my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 I can set IMDB and Wikipedia among others to be searchable from the search box. All the options are gone now. You can't even launch maps or music. What's going on?

I'm seeing this problem on my Nexus 5 too. Really surprised to see Google release a device/software upgrade with such a core functionality missing.
I'm having a hard time believing that more people aren't talking about this issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Having the same issue, could barely find any threads talking about this problem. Have you guys managed to find a fix? I have the exact same settings under phone search as you, just contacts, app names, and Play books and movies.
I have been looking all over and haven't found any info.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I'm surprised by this as well! Maybe we just have to wait for the various apps to update for 4.4 to get recognized in the list?
On a related note, and I'm sure of the answer already, but, are you guys able to use the "OK, Google... Play [insert music]" command? It obviously doesn't here and I'm a bit disappointed... It didn't work on my old phone for a reason I wasn't able to figure out (perhaps a Nexus S issue or me being in Canada) and I was hoping it would work now...
Oh well...
There's a new API for this sort of functionality in Kit Kat. That's probably why. Google will be allowing developers to integrate their apps more seamlessly with Google Now. Rumor is an update to Google Search will be coming this week that will have the first bits of this functionality (limited only to certain developers who were given early access), but will expand soon after.
Basically, before, the integration was little more than speech-to-text for those apps, a very scrappy integration. This will be far more integrated into Google Now, with apps allowed to show cards and such.
Edit: Note that playing music is still possible however. Make sure you have the music apps you want installed first. Then, ask google to play something. A card will pop up, and it'll initially say "Google Play Store", but there's an option in the lower left corner to change that to any music app available. Basically it works the same as before, but instead of a pop-up window asking you, it's now an option below the card.
Thanks, that's good to know it's simply an API issue and we just need to wait for developers to update their app.
As for using the command "Play" or "Listen to" and "What's this song?" in Google Now, it appears it is still being blocked for us Canadians for now. I assume this restriction will be lifted once Google Play Music service is introduced in Canada. I know "Play" and "Listen to" used to work in the earlier builds but became blocked with one of the Google Now updates during the summer.
Just update to Google search 3.1.8, but the problem is stille, can't search music, book, or any other third party apps.
I'm trying to get the best out of the Google Play Store and I'm looking for an advanced search but I can't find anything.
Usually when I'm looking for an app I'm not interested in games, book and whatever. Often I look straight for paid apps, but I can't see how to filter results. I can't see a way to sort results upon rates, price or last update date.
I even noticed that it's almost impossible to list ALL the apps made by Google: if I go to "more from developer" I can't see the Google Calendar app (I'm sure, checked twice, it's not in the list).
Am I missing something?
Isn't there a way to get an advanced search in which I can set strict conditions? (It doesn't matter if I have to use the computer or just android to perform an advanced search)
I'm kind of astonished ...
What? I can actually easily search google calendar 0_0 seems weird

And also make sure your play store is up to date...

I can look for "google calendar". My complain is the fact that if you filter the official apps made by Google than Google Calendar is not listed.

yes but how can you select multiple categories and add additional conditions to your search? For instance "I want to get all the free (or paid) apps about notification that have nothing to do with games" (it's just an example)
