Hi all. I've just found out about this brilliant phone. Had no idea it existed. I've always liked the Motorola Milestone (qwerty physical keyboards are a must to me) however i ended up getting the wrong version of the milestone (european) with the wrong 3G bands for my carrier so i could only get Edge speeds.
Anyways, it seems like the Droid 2 Global version uses simcards. I live in the Dominican Republic, Claro (my carrier) runs on the 850/1900 bands and it seems like the D2G can work with them, in theory. I've been reading a couple of threads regarding this though, it seems like those bands have been locked out by verizon so people don't use it on other US carriers such as AT&T which happens to run on the same bands i need (850/1900). But others say its the carrier ID that has been locked out. I read something about a user being able to get 3G speeds on Chile, but i've no idea what bands he was using.
What i want to know is, if i ordered a Droid 2 Global phone, would i be getting 3G speeds using my Claro simcard here after having it sim-unlocked?
There's also the Milestone 2 of course, but they seem to cost $500+ plus they dont specify which bands the phone works with. I dont want to end up buying the wrong phone version again. Also, It seemsl ike the droid 2 global is being sold for a less ($300-400).

read the spec
I am using my SIM-unlocked D2G fine here, on a carrier that uses 850MHz UMTS.
The Milestone 2, as far as I know, is still only available in a 900/2100 UMTS variant so far.
From what I gather, the lock Verizon put on the radio to prevent use on US GSM carriers is based on the MCC (mobile country code) number associated with networks based in the USA, and not the frequencies themselves. In effect, once unlocked the phone will work with any GSM provider (on a supported frequency), except those based in the U.S. This would explain why the AT&T 850MHz network (MCC 301) doesn't work, whereas the Telstra 850MHz network I use (MCC 505) does.
One complication about buying a Droid 2 Global now, is that from various reports on this forum, some devices don't respond to their SIM unlock codes (!) and are effectively unlockable. If I were buying a D2G now for use on a GSM carrier, I'd only buy one that has already been unlocked - wouldn't want to take the chance on getting a phone that is unlockable. This might be why some are being listed for dirt cheap!

Wow thats not good is it. Thanks for the advice, i'll make sure the phone is unlocked. I've never really understood how phones are unlocked by third party anyways. But I understand you can have them unlocked by giving verizon a call and under certain conditions, they'll provide the unlock code for free.
I was in the Dominican Republic last week with my D2G and it worked perfectly (unlocked using Rogers Canada service). Claro service sucked a bit (coverage wise) but worked fine (3G), Orange (EDGE) seemed a bit better where I was.
I am pretty sure you will be fine AS LONG AS you get unlockable/unlocked D2G.
ok one last question,
does anyone know if a droid with bad esn will work ok with a different carrier's simcard if unlocked?
I would assume droids with bad esn will be going for cheaper on ebay
bas esn mean d phone could be stolen so it will b a hassle to clear the esn
How can one know if the phone has a bad ESN? Just wondering.

Obtain the esn from whomever you are purchasing from. Then ask Verizon regarding the esn you were provided.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
but wouldnt you only need a clear ESN if you're going to use the phone with CDMA? or would that affect GSM usage as well ? (simcards)
According to the eBay listing I bought mine from, it has a bad ESN (at least, it explicitly stated "will not activate on Verizon") - but the GSM/UMTS radio works fine.

Bad ESN will only affect use on Verizon and its MNVOs (possibly). GSM networks will work fine. Just remember though if it's not already unlocked, and the ebay unlocker codes don't work, it will probably be near impossible getting verizon to give you the code for a phone with bad esn.
thanks for the info. I''ll look for unlocked plus bad ESN phones on ebay and see if theyre any cheaper
Hi all, im very new to XDA & have no knowledge of bandwidths. I just recently bought a HTC Sensation (not sure what model, but it was from a local guy). Had it unlocked so i can use it with my ATT plan. every thing was working fine except i had no data & couldnt send/recieve MMS. When first turned on, there was no APN settings on the phone, so i applied the settings stated in the thread APN settings for unlocked Sensation on ATT by mekajt7 on 09/05/11. Now i have data & MMS is working fine execpt my data is only 2G??
If there's anyone out there with more extensive knowledge regarding this topic, or how to get my phone to pick up 3G?? pleeeeeese leave a reply.
ive spent hours online reading about the bandwidths & ive been getting mixed results.... some said yes, it should work & most said no.
I'm in need of some answers
thanks for reading
the only way an sensation can pick up att 3g signals is if you buy one from canada made for their bell carrier. other then that all you can get is edge. if you want 3g or even better, 4g and be in the usa, you need tmobile
thanks for the reply kpholmes. yea, that's the same thing ive been getting from reading online for 4 hours. do you or anyone else reading know the model number for T-Mo's version vs. Bell's version???
i know it's 710a or 710e. but which is which??

The Z710a is the North American (NAM) version sold by Canadian carriers and it supports the 850/1900/2100 3G bands that AT&T uses.
The Z710e supports the European and T-Mobile 3G bands.

so, T-Mo's is neither of these?? or is it the Z710e??
im just trying to get the model's correctly identified
thanks for the reply
T-mo is the same as european and asian version, it wont work with at&t 3G which is probably what you have. You need to get the canadian sensation from bell or virgin mobile model number z710a. If you look at settings>>about phone>>phone identity, the model number of your phone should be there. If it is z710e, then you are out of luck.
So the Canadian version can use 3G on AT&T? And 4G?

Yes the Canadian version can use AT&T 3G and HSPA+ network.
Can someone please help me with me new galaxy 3s? I just bought it from USA and i want to use it on Greece but it is locked on verizon.... What should i do?
That's an 800MHz/1900MHz CDMA phone. If Greece is like the rest of Europe and uses GSM, the phone doesn't have the radios to work there, so you can't use it. (The SIM is for data, not voice, but you need the basic connection to the network for it to work, and a CDMA phone won't connect to a GSM network.)
You should sell the phone to someone in the US (who wants a Verizon phone - it can't be "unlocked" for other carriers) and buy the GSM version of the phone.

New Verizon phones have worldwide roaming ability (including the S3) so it should work on any GSM carrier outside the US.

It is a sch i535rwb 4g phone. How can i check if it has a worldwide roaming phone? Also what should i do so that i can use it in Greece?
You need the SGH T999 (The GSM variant of the SGSIII) The Verizon variant should NOT work in Greece on a Greek carrier.

Are you sure for that? If i am not wrong this is an US version too, whats the diference and i can use sgh t999 in Greece?
I used to think it was native but apparently not. You can still enable worldwide roaming though.
Here's the thread, you need to do some hackery

You can just root it and and flash the synergy mod rom and it will work on any carrier
Does it actually have a SIM card slot or just a built in one?
If you're looking to use it primarily in your area I'd look for a different phone - sell or trade this one. I've heard the GSM can be used but that it's pretty terrible and certainly not what you'd want for a primary phone.

I switched to sprint about 5 months ago and I got my s5 with a 2 year contract. We also got another line with another phone. The account is in good standing with payments on time always. Will Sprint unlock it for me so I can use it on a trip im taking overseas? I'm not sure what their policy is..and I know they do it OTA, so that means I have to be on stock rom right?
Yes stock rom. Sprint more than likely unlick. Of course you will have to mnew monthly charges. But depend sd wherr your going. If going to us territories sprint will work. Just call sptint anf see
They will usually unlock it for international roaming after having the phone on your account for 90 days.

please note that most of the world is now based on GSM and Sprint is a CDMA based service. Once unlocked you would probably need a GSM sim card installed in order to use the S5 (this sim card can either be one from the US, a more expensive option, or a local sim wherever you are traveling to).
In Europe, especially UK, there are many cheap GSM sim operators.

Yeah that's the plan for me to buy a local sim in that country so I can use the phone with a local number there. Do you know what bands the gsm works on?

Depending on the country involved they use 900 and 1800 mainly but the s5 has all the bands used in Europe. Note that T Mobile is a major carrier so you should be ok with this phone if it is truly unlocked
Hey XDA members!
I am going to Europe (Germany, France, and Spain) over a span of around two weeks.
I plan on purchasing the AT&T Passport Plus Plan (300MB Data, .50c p/m, and unlimited text), and I was wondering, when roaming, will I be able to switch between the different roaming partners:
GERMANY: T-Mobile Germany, Vodafone
FRANCE: Bouygues Telecom, Orange France, SFR France
SPAIN: Orange, Vodafone Spain, Telefonica, Yoigo
For example, what will choose if I am using TMo or Vodafone in Germany, can I choose? If I can choose, where is the setting in the G3's settings to choose this.
Thanks for your help!

If your using a AT&T branded G3 on stock rom it will choose which ever is best. You won't have control over what it connects too. As well as even if you could get to network selection it will all depend on who AT&T has a roaming agreement with. But in an AT&T phone running stock rom you cannot see or change networks when there's an AT&T sim in it.
Before paying AT&T for an international plan I'd just get a local sim it would be a lot cheaper.
Sounds like an awesome trip!

The problem with a local sim is, I would need 4 of them, as well as to unlock my device. Keep in mind, in Europe, there isn't just one set of carriers. The carriers I posted are the ones ATT has roaming agreements with. How does it determine what's best, and how can you tell which carrier you are on?
I know the iPhone you can switch between carriers in the settings, and it will tell you which carrier you are on.
ATT's roaming plans actually arent that bad.. I'd rather pay for that than having to waste my time in several carrier stores, while on vacation.

That is true about the muti carriers. Orange and T-Mobile cover a good bit though but each would have roaming anyway.
iPhone with an AT&T sim in it you cannot choose a network or even view. I have an iPhone 6 at the moment.
That's what's I hate what AT&T does. Even in the USA id like to see what networks come up when I travel around. From picking up USCellular and Verizon LTE even though you cannot connect to it AT&T don't like you seeing or having control over it.
When you roam in the USA it will still show your on AT&T you have to look in settings, or run a network app to see your actually roaming. (I roamed once) outside of Nashville TN. I actually took a different root just to see haha. I'm sort of a quiet network Geek.
BUT when your outside of the U.S. It will show what network your own but you won't have control to select them.

Same in Canada.

I mean it might honestly show up when your outside the USA but I highly doubt it.
It's a modem/software lock that AT&T does. If your phone was unlocked and you put in say a T-Mobile USA sim in it you'd see the network selection. But not with an AT&T sim in it.
No I haven't had any experience with international roaming besides using a EE UK/Orange UK sim in the USA. But I'm just a network geek. Not as much as I used to when I had CDMA. But I still am occasionally.
