Hi all, im very new to XDA & have no knowledge of bandwidths. I just recently bought a HTC Sensation (not sure what model, but it was from a local guy). Had it unlocked so i can use it with my ATT plan. every thing was working fine except i had no data & couldnt send/recieve MMS. When first turned on, there was no APN settings on the phone, so i applied the settings stated in the thread APN settings for unlocked Sensation on ATT by mekajt7 on 09/05/11. Now i have data & MMS is working fine execpt my data is only 2G??
If there's anyone out there with more extensive knowledge regarding this topic, or how to get my phone to pick up 3G?? pleeeeeese leave a reply.
ive spent hours online reading about the bandwidths & ive been getting mixed results.... some said yes, it should work & most said no.
I'm in need of some answers
thanks for reading
the only way an sensation can pick up att 3g signals is if you buy one from canada made for their bell carrier. other then that all you can get is edge. if you want 3g or even better, 4g and be in the usa, you need tmobile
thanks for the reply kpholmes. yea, that's the same thing ive been getting from reading online for 4 hours. do you or anyone else reading know the model number for T-Mo's version vs. Bell's version???
i know it's 710a or 710e. but which is which??

The Z710a is the North American (NAM) version sold by Canadian carriers and it supports the 850/1900/2100 3G bands that AT&T uses.
The Z710e supports the European and T-Mobile 3G bands.

so, T-Mo's is neither of these?? or is it the Z710e??
im just trying to get the model's correctly identified
thanks for the reply
T-mo is the same as european and asian version, it wont work with at&t 3G which is probably what you have. You need to get the canadian sensation from bell or virgin mobile model number z710a. If you look at settings>>about phone>>phone identity, the model number of your phone should be there. If it is z710e, then you are out of luck.
So the Canadian version can use 3G on AT&T? And 4G?

Same thing with T-Mobile TP2 on AT&T network. Compare Rogers and Telus 3G bands. It might be different.

lol yeah I think so. I think its called 1x or something like that. I'm not very familiar with the CDMA phones but they advertise that you can use the phone to surf 3G speeds on their network so I'm pretty sure they have 3G speeds.
Sorry, but i'm using TELUS and the HSPA network won't be up till next year and trust me, Telus speeds now are NOTHING close to 3G.
I'm not sure how they are advertising these 3G speeds but 1x is actually slower than what Telus is currently using which is EVDO.

i dont think thats true at all. i get speeds of up to 2.8mg downlink and 500k up.
ive downloaded while tethering upwards up 300kb/s. you might be in an area with 1x coverage, and not EVDO. PLUS make sure the device you are using isnt just EVDO, it has to be EVDO REV A. (touch pro, diamond, touch pro 2, touch, etc). Hope you get better speeds. CHears
Telus EVDO is not slow. Unfortunately the HDPA network is not up yet but it should be online VERY soon as the Olympics are drawing close and this is the reason why Telus is upgrading the network before Feb. 2010 here in Vancouver.

Where the heck are you located?? I'm using a TP2 with full EV signal and i'm getting 400-600k and that's in the downtown core. And from what telus tells me thats the best they can do till they put the HSPA network up. They said CDMA is only capable of 7-750k max, there is no getting over that. But i'd love to know how your getting 2.8 meg, because technically thats roughly 2100k faster than what telus says we can get.
And Jessie is right Telus has a goal to sell phones during the olympics and they plan to have the HSPA up by then.
Yup I'm pretty sure I saw Telus advertising their high speed somewhere
im using a physical sim-card thingy to allow other sim cards to work in my telus TP2, it works (since it does not give me the regular error and i can see the numbers in it), but how do I stop it from using CDMA and go on GSM only?
Guys
I'm hoping you can help us no CDMA users with this question.
Considering that the CDMA TP2 has both GSM and CDMA radios, can I pop in a GSM SIM CARD and enjoy full GSM coverage including use of Asia and European 3G bands?

Yes you can use it on GSM networks. If you want to use the phone on a SIM other that the company's provided sim you need to sim-unlock it. The 3G will work in Asia and Europe but not in North AMerica because the bands are different and the TP2 supports those of Asia and Europe only (the North American CDMA version).

It is quadband gsm.... works on all continents.... provided it is unlocked or you are paying for global roaming.
hello guys, im going to purchase verizon tp2 cause they say it supports gsm and cheaper than the generic nonbranded version. tmobile's design i dislike. so as im going to use it only with gsm sim, i have such questions, are there any differences in use between gsm and vzw versions except i must select gsm mode? can i flash it with generic tp2 roms?
........
okay, seems to be cdma versions cant be flashed to gsm as it is another model id(rhod400 and rhod500)
so i have one more question, will i be able to use internet on vzw tp2 without any restrictions on its stock rom now, when hardspl have not been released yet?
Just to be sure I understand if I want to buy a TP2 in Canada...
The Telus version will not be able to use GSN (Fido/Rogers) 3G network because the 3G bands are not the same as the TP2 from the United-States and Europe?
If so, would this version of the TP2 work with Fido/Rogers GSM 3g ?

I dont think so. I dont think there's a PRO 2 that supports our North American 3G bands.. At least not yet.. For the question above. Yes it is GSM quadband but not 3G quadband. This is different. It is 3G dualband and supports those of Asia and Europe only. Unfortunately.
That's a good and clear answer! Thx !
No problem. I think when and if AT&T or some North American GSM carrier releases the TP2, then the 3G will definitely work here in NA. Otherwise the current versions only support Asia and Europe.
Another question, can we install a custom ROM on the worldphone telus Touch Pro 2 like the other GSM phones? (I dont think so but I found two opposite answers on this forum).
Hello
I apologize now, i have searched but maybe im looking for the wrong answer
I have just bought a nexus s and rooted it via a great guide on here that works for all nexus s's the only problem i am having is now trying to find out what model i have as i bought it off ebay.
under the battery it says GT I9020
but with the A and T available i dunno which one i have.
I will provide more info if required but i dunno which one i have so i can flash the more up to date OTA (ie 2.3.5 + 6)
I apologize again and thank you for help in advance

Matt
Which carrier, can use 3G?
If ATT and 3G - a
ATT and no 3G - t
TMo 3G - t
TMo no 3G - a
Compare frequencies from your carrier with ATT/TMo if not in US.

ok so as i see it someone correct me if i am wrong
i have 3 g but i am in uk so
AT&T 3G = 850/1900Mhz
TMobile 3G = 1700/2100Mhz
I am on Three UK and they support 850/2100Mhz
Mock me if i am wrong but i am still confused to which model i have an A or a T
:-(
Check gsmarena.com
Att has 850-1900-2100
Tmo has 900-1700-2100
I hope this helps.
Can u take a picture of the model number in the back. Out of curiosity I wanna see how did that happen
Still both networks support 3G 2100Mhz and after checking what aerial mast is in my area with the network you guessed it its a 2100Mhz so i still have no idea on which model number i have :-(
someone give me a clue!
You have the at&t model. Even though they both have 2100mhz, Tmobile uses there 2100mhz specifically for the upload portion of HSPA+ while the 1700mhz is used specifically for the download portion, without both bands then your phone (any HSPA phone) will not register with Tmobile 3/4G network.

anyone here use a euro Sensation in the US? what carrier are you using and do you get 3G?
thank you in advance!
The US and EU are the same so you shouldn't have any issues and it will run at 4G.
And btw, Welcome to USA

If it uses the same bands as the US version it should work for T-Mobile and Simple Mobile(prepaid mvno that uses t-mobiles tower).
Both gets 4G where its available.

yup tmobile sells z710e and from your signature i can tell yours is z710e so there you have it!
Europe has GSM band. Don't think they use that in USA. But I heard att and T-Mobile should work though.

I took my EU Sensation to Florida in Septemeber - bought a tmobile SIM and had it up and running within a few hours. The initial problem that I had was that my phone was registered with tmobile in the UK - so the tmobile apps didn't work in the US with the help of tech support they registered the phone with themselves and I was able to use the tmobile apps including the $1.34 for internet per day which you have to activate daily.
Of course, now that I'm back in the UK - my tmobile apps don't work here but I don't need them here.

I believe that T-Mobile US is the same as Euro based phones, i.e. uses the same bands, 900Mhz, and AWS. Bell Canada and AT&T US use 850MHz which isn't compatible. They're both GSM for Voice, the data frequencies are different though.
Please correct if I've got that wrong. I know I looked up some of this and it all got scary.
There are various posts on the subject.
I found this so you can plug the county in and see what's compatibile.
(850MHz) http://www.gsmnation.com/htc-sensation-z710a-3g-850-1900-mhz.html
(900MHz) http://www.gsmnation.com/htc-sensation.html
EDIT: Why is life so complicated ? I thought we had it simple now, guess again. At least Pan Europe there is one standard (or so I believe).
Have fun.
thanks for all your input guys! i guess T-Mo is the way to go. my wife said that when she was back in the US (Hawaii and NY), she was not getting 3G on T-Mo while she was there.
could that just be that we don't have a 3G plan?
Hey guys, I have a question and hopefully you can answer and point me into the right direction.
I recently moved from England where i purchased my HTC sensation, and i moved too Canada, British Columbia. My phone is S-off and everything, so i was just wondering if i can get it to work in Canada, and what i would need to download and change or w.e else for it to be able to work on canadian simcards?
any information is greatly appreciated
Thankyou

what bands do they use in canada? in the uk?
the sensation comes with
3G 900/2100
OR
3G 850/1900/2100
you need to find out which one you have, and then go with the telephone company that supports it
sorry, i don't know how to find out what you have, i'm sure other people do though
Hey man, thanks for the reply, i found out the in Canada, it is 3G 850/1900 MHz them two bands for 3G which i am not too bothered about, i would just rather keep my phone instead of having to buy a new one altogether. I got my unlock code from the guide posted above which is awesome, but when ever i put in my friends Canadian simcard it just comes up with no service.. it allows me to look at his messages etc however. I will try some other carriers today and see if anything else works
I was/still am on a Vodafone Contract, which is what the phone got shipped with.
This may sound like a really nooby question, but does flashing a different radio help at all? The main carrier where i am is TELUS, so i dont know if any of these; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867 would help at all?
Thanks for your help!
Your UK Vodafone 3G frequencies are 900/2100. You would therefore not get 3G there. You need to check whether Telus operate 2G at all. Bear in mind that some operators, like "3"in the UK use only 3G .
For your UK Sensation to work there, you need to find a GSM operator that uses 2G. This is you only option.
or you could purchase mobile wifi 3G (if they do that in canada) and use that to access the internet from your phone
...it's a shame, but your best bet would be to sell the sensation...you simply won't be able to access anything other than GSM in Canada

International z710e works in Canada with Wind and Mobilicity. The 3G frequency of z710e is 900/AWS/2100. Wind and mobilicity operates on AWS.
For 2G connectivity, it's either Fido, Chatr, or Rogers.
You can confirm phone (850 or 900) country/carrier compatibility from:

to find out if you have the Z710e or Z710a
goto settings>>About phone>>Phone identity. Look at the model number at the top
I believe European models are the same as Asian models which is Z710e. You can get 3G with Wind or Mobilicity networks only. I recommend Wind, they have $29 no contract with unlimited data, unlimited texts including international and unlimited calls Canada wide within wind home zone. Your phone will still work with rogers, bell, fido, kodoo etc. but only 2G
Hey guys just wondering if anybody has unlocked a One S (bought from a Canadian Carrier) and tested it out on Wind or Mobilicity.
I emailed HTC asking them about the bands supported by the phones and this is the reply I got.
Fido: HSPA 42 Mbps
Bell: HSPA 42 Mbps 2100/1900/AWS GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Sasktel: HSPA 42 Mbps
Telus: HSPA 42 Mbps
Virgin: HSPA 42 Mbps

Asked them if the other phones had the same bands
I do apologise for the misunderstanding, but the bands would be the same for the One S on each network.
That being said, I will suggest to contact Wind Mobile to verify if a unlocked phone will work to its fullest potential or not. The reason I mention this, is that some providers put a limit on the connection, on an unlocked phone.

Are you sure Penta Band ONE S exist in Canada/USA ? read post #3
As for the official HTC site says. HSPA/WCDMA:Europe/Asia: 850/900/2100 MHz
BUT Your links would make sense according to the note Network bands in regions other than Europe and Asia Pacific may be different, depending on the mobile operator and your location.
I too, am trying to find out too what bands does the Canadian version support
Fido , Bell, Virgin all listed HSPA 850 1900 2100 but Telus only listed 850 1900 , so that leads me to believe 1700 is not supported.
However at the same time, the international version isn't penta band, nor the T mobile version... Where are theretailers getting their penta band One S in black?
Maybe the device is penta band from the fatory but carriered modified ?
My Telus One S arrives next week and I will unlock it but ufortunately Wind doesn't
operate in SK so I won't be able to test it.
I tried to look at the demo phone and I couldnt find the menu option to select networks.

The black unlocked international One S is for sure not pentaband as far as I know and supports less bands than the blue version. I am assuming the blue versions are all the same and just branded differently. My suspicion is Fido/Bell/Virgin/Telus aren't listing the 1700 band so that people do not buy and unlock them to use with Wind/Mobilicity.
That's too bad there has to be someone out there that has attempted to try it on Wind/Mobilicity. It's such a pain how every site/company is showing different specs.
The European version will not work with AWS. Currently the only *confirmed" AWS version is the T-Mobile US version. However if S-Off is ever achieved then flashing a T-Mobile US radio could "unlock" the bands in the European version and other versions a la the Snapdragon Galaxy Note.

I am aware the the European one does not have AWS. However I am not asking about the black European model. In Canada we have the blue model just like the one with T-Mobile in the States which leads me to believe that the Canadian version=the American version; I just need some confirmation.

Sorry didn't know that, went to the HTC UK site and found all the major carriers that had the One S and they were all black. Why does it have to be so difficult for companies to get their specs straight...

Does anybody mind looking under the cover for the model / FCC ID / Industry Canada certification numbers and reporting back with the carrier they got the phone from and the FCC ID. They should be printed on the label near the headphones / headset jack.
These are the variants available in Canada.
PJ40100: UMTS Band V (850)
PJ40110: UMTS Band II (1900)/IV (AWS)/V (850)
PJ40200: UMTS Band V (850)
PJ40210: UMTS Band II (1900)/V (850)
I went to Telus and Bell today ( the Fido and Sasktel stores didn't have working demo models ), I checked the FCC tags and both of them showed "PJ40110". on the top line.
I didn't look at the FCC ID or IC.

Awesome! Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. Now I can safely go out and buy this with no worries
Please be aware that you will buy an unsupported phone, unlock the bootloader to root the phone, most probably voiding your warranty in the process (there's talk that the root-only (and not requiring unlocked bootloader) method for the NA One X works on the One S) then Sim-unlock the phone (by a paid code or the new hack), find the APNs for your carrier...
... And hope that all works...
I don't want to scare you but make sure you fully understand all risks. Specially if you buy the phone outright and don't have an account on that carrier...
Despite the fact that I can't test data (as it should be locked in my account) here is a shot telling that I'm on 3G UTMS (which can't be done with this SIM on a non-AWS phone like my iPhone).
I got one from Virginmobile had it unlocked it and am now using it on Mobilicity.
The Rep at the store assured me it wont work but i tried it and it did.
Reason for buying from there was because it was on sale.
