Ok so I've done two flashes today and both have come up with the same result, my caller ID shows Unknown name, Unknown number for all calls??
Here is the ICS rom I'm running now but I can't post in that forum because I'm a newb.
Has anyone else seen this yet? Or have I done something wrong? I have searched and can't find anything specific to this phone.
Also, if I go back to the original Gingerbread the numbers come up as they are supposed to.
Sorry, please ignore this... got home and tried with a different number and it's working now?
Delete this thread at will
I'm actually seeing this as well - sort of. When a contact calls, it displays caller ID correctly. When someone not in my contacts calls it shows up as unknown. HOWEVER, my Any.DO app has functionality for missed calls (you can add a missed call to your task list to call later or ignore) and when that pops up I see the phone number of who called.
Weird...
when you go home, you probably connect to your home wi-fi. the app only works and does a "reverse lookup" whenever a data connection is working properly.
however, if the data of location is already stored on your contacts from previous SUCCESSFUL data reverse lookups, your phone will pull that information first if no data connection is available.
Strange... so I flashed the Alien ROM last night and all was good nunbers all worked etc. So just for kicks I've flashed back to the ATT rom and it's not working again.
all numbers just come up as Unknown (no number at all, just the word Unknown). I'm wondering if it simply takes some time for the networks to sync or something?
I'm gonna leave it on for a while and let you know what happens.

Are you using the built-in City ID app? cuz if so, it still requires a DATA connection.!! Wi-fi or Data. Without it, it will return "unknown". UNLESS it has been manually entered and/or retrieved from a previous session....
are you not understanding? I felt like I just repeated myself lol.

Thanks for that... I do have a data connection, both WIFI and 4G/LTE from my provider...It still doesn't work. I have no idea what you mean by a "City ID" app. Is there something I've missed?
I should also mention that this has NOTHING to do with my contacts. ANY call either a number I have in my contacts or a number that is not in my contacts, neither show up at all. When I get a phone call the screen goes black and I see the word UNKNOWN at the top and then the answer or hang up buttons at the bottom.
i am also facing the same issue
Found a reason behind the problem in another forum, have a look here
Its not the perfect solution but it does work and it means you have to call Rogers.

Naw that doesn't work for me, I don't have name display. It does that regardless, unless I spoof tbe caller id and then I work fine. I think rogers has a specific format that they detect for caller id and if it doesn't match then you get nothing.
I can't share how to spoof caller id because I have my VoIP company and so there certain things that I can do which otherwise isn't doable.
Basically the phone that's calling has to format the number in international calling string. +1 999 999 9999
Or the receiving phone has to change it to that since caller id works as a two step thing.

Does anyone know how to remove Verizon's "City ID" app from a Win Mobile phone? I have seen lots of talk about removing it from Android phones, but not Win Mobile. There is no entry for it, under Remove Programs.
If you don't know, the "City ID" app adds its best guess as to the originating city and state for incoming calls, and tags the call as such on the display, and in the past calls list.
Verizon charges for this app after a brief trail period. If you dare to not pay for it, it doesn't self-uninstall. Instead, it starts to tag all incoming calls as "Unknown".
Sorry, but I find each call stating its origin as "Unknown" annoying. Besides, I would think the Win Mobile might be able to get the call's origin from an address in the Directory, but I bet "City ID" is blocking/overriding/inhibiting that.
Does anyone have any clue or hints on this?
Interesting, I didn't realize this was a paid app. I got it to work on my GW825 which is running on a different network. I wonder what would happen after 15 days? I'm guessing it would stop working.
Do you still need help with this?

If it simply stopped working, I would not have a problem. The problem is that it continues to work, but returns simply "unknown" as the call's originating city.
I rather have a blank (ie, nothing) than "unknown" displayed.
What happens if you change this to 0?
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Phone\CallerLocation]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
I can take no credit for this, since my sole contribution is to report it on xdadevelopers, and to have tried that it actually work.
The major breakthrough to make this happen was the developers of MJMD5; DTM, Stewart, netdata, az1234 and teddy_b that resides/ed on magicjacksupport.
read more about the code here, notably pages 3- 7: MJMD5 concept and coding.
The original softphone code is by Regis Montoya, alias r3gis.3R, and his crew: CSipSimple
It has been modified to support MagicJack in collaboration with Spider210: CSipSimpleMJMD5
r3gis made the following remark:
Magic Jack authentication method is now integrated to the trunk of the android port of pjsip. As consequence all future release of CSipSimple will include the Magic Jack feature

THIS IS AN AWESOME ARTICLE!!!
thanks to the devs and this poster for getting this info and app out!!!
i dont think alot of people understand what it does....YET.
skype charges i think $30.00 for your online number and $2.99mo for unlimited calls/recieve to usa and canada.....$3.00 * 12months = $36.00 + $30.00 for online number - $66.00
with this app you go buy MagicJack at walmart for $19.99 and you get your online number and 12months call/recieve to usa and canada.
ONE more thing....you can take your cellphone with you and use it on ANY open WIFI
Magicjack DONGLE = you have to have a pc.
cant beat that....but the app it self is having call problems with my evo over wifi.
if my screen goes dark the call starts breaking up real bad...dont know why it does....prob just a bug.
also when i am connected and i keep tapping my screen to keep it awake (and stay in call) the call loudness/quality isnt that great....not sure why.
i am over wifi so i should be able to pick good settings in the menu but not really sure what i need to pick
if someone could tell me what to put in that app to improve the loudness when on speaker phone and off speaker phone i would appreciate it.
thanks again to the devs and this poster for putting the info out.
this really should be a sticky i think as its cheaper then anything out there if you "do not have cell service"
great for ppl with wifi only.

I had magicjack for two years. Worked great. I would sign up again if magicjack works on Android.
It does work on android. I use it in conjunction with google voice to allow me to sill receive calls when I don't have any cell signal but do have wifi.
All I had to do was add my magic jack number as a forwarding option in google voice. Then when I am somewhere without cell service, I connect to wifi, bring up the google voice setup web page and check the check box to enable forwarding to the mj number. So when someone calls my normal number.... No signal... Straight to google voice... Rings my magic jack number... Rings on my wifi connected android phone.

i not sure i get what you are saying?
why dont you just use mj the way it is being done here already?
you dont need GV do you?
if someone calls my mj number it will ring on my phone and i can answer it.
i can also make calls.
the call quality is just horrible for me though
at least on my evo
i really wish someone could make a guide showing which settings produce the best quality conversation

i dont understand the part with GV.
the only advantage i can see if that they dont have to call your original mj number.
GV just forwards its number to the MJ number...i think
you dont have to actually use GV though....the people who call you can just have the original MJ number and you can receive calls on your cellphone when they call that number.
With CSipSimple you no longer need to link it up with GV.
As long as you have you MagicJack Sip credentials, you can use CSipSimple, and now also aSip, to make and receive USA/Canada calls w/o any extra charges, as long as your phone has some type of data connection, 3G/4G or WiFi.
Normally, you need to hook up the MagicJack dongle to a Computers USB port.

+1 in a heartbeat
Hey I'm having troubles setting this up. I installed the APK package onto my Droid 1 (verizon) running Android OS 2.2. After entering the username, password and server (with and without a specific port) it says "Register Failed - Check your Configuration". I have tried different combinations of making new advanced config accounts within CSIPSimple to no avail.
edit-- Also getting 'unauthorized' error
Force closing is a common occurrence while tinkering with the settings. What am I doing wrong? Is there a guide on how to set this up by chance? I'm new to the world of SIP/Softphones/VoIP & such so its a bit tedious at the moment. Also, is a microSD card required to use this?
Haven't been able to get my MagicJack SIP info. None of the process explained in the links seem to be working for me (nor for other people over at the linked page). Still working at it though....
i downlaoded the latest CSipSimple at the link in the first post of this thread.
when i disconnect the MJ dongle in my house and then i activate the MagicJack connection in the CSipSimple Accounts area i get a green light indicating i can make and recieve calls and it actually works fine.
BUT
when i take that same exact phone to town and connect to an open wifi hotspot i get the red indicator at the magicjack account and it says it couldnt register
now i only checked this at one hotspot that had an open wifi (Staples) so i not sure if it is in their router settings or if it is MagicJack Carrier detecting im not using my router (the last router the mj dongle was seen at)
if anyone knows it would be good to pass that info along.
Registration Failed, Request Timed Out, or Unauthorized Error
I don't know if this will help everyone with this problem, but last night I was using CSIPSIMPLE/MagicJack and it worked great. This morning, however, I was getting a registration failed error. I ran SIPDump.exe on the MJ device and found that MagicJack had apparently changed my password. As soon as I updated the password in CSIPSIMPLE it registered within seconds.

The steps worked the first time for me. Just make sure you have SIPDump.exe ready to run and wait for the first ad to start showing up on the MJ softphone, and then quickly hit ok on Sipdump.exe.
Your Username is E**********01 (replace * with area code and phone number)
When you open the first Sipdump1.txt search for Sip.connection.refresh
Your password should be about 7 lines above that. Use all caps when putting the password into CSIPSIMPLE.
My phone number is based out of columbus so I set my proxy to
proxy01.columbus.talk4free.com
CSIPSIMPLE registered within seconds.
Thanks to all who made this possible. I have several places I go that I get wifi but no 3g/cell signal. This allows me to have phone service almost everywhere I go.
hey everyone.
i had this working for some time now. recently MJ changed the passwords so i went in there and got the new one. everything else looks the same but it doesnt seem to register for some odd reason. it says unauthorized. i extracted the keys in both the perk script and the other app mentioned int he first post. they are the same and still dont work. is anyone having the same issue?
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

Hit menu -> settings -> lock wifi and make sure it's checked. Your wifi goes to power saver when the screen shuts off.
Please post your experience with the call quality using your MagicJack account on Androic via this app. I've heard mostly bad reviews...
I want this so bad, I leave the country at least twice a year and am always stuck without a phone. Last time I went to UK, Span and France for a month and Skype had canceled their Android service. Two days after I got back they brought the app back (sans video calling). So frustrating.
I tried to get my password, but I was not able. Any suggestions how to find the password and set it on Galaxy S? Any help will be appreciated.
magicjack on andriod phone
Please i need help to use magicjack app on my Andriod Phone some one to help me.
Really strange. I suddenly lost the ability to send SMS messages. I can still receive them, and I can still send MMS, pictures...etc., but NOT SMS.
This has happened before once on my Nexus One, I went into messaging, opened settings, and there was an option for "Service Center number" or something similar...I was then able to input the SMSC # "12063130004" and all was well.
However, in Gingerbread on the nexus S, there is no such option under messaging settings
I tried *#*#info#*#* as well, went to the SMSC box which was blank, entered "+12063130004", then clicked update...but I keep getting "Update Error".
I'm not sure if this matters or not, but when I choose "Refresh" to the right of the blank SMSC box, instead of obtaining the correct telephone number, I get "00".
If anyone has encountered this, or has any other possible ideas...I'm all for it. I've tried some basic stuff, cycling battery, restoring from nandroid...even flashing a stock 2.3.1 and unrooting/unlocking the Nexus S, and I am still stuck, totally unable to send an SMS. Please help!

Possibly, thanks for checking. I wish there was a way to manually enter a SMS service number in messaging settings like in previous android versions. I was thinking maybe for some reason my SIM card is too old, and suddenly decided to not be recognized properly. Looks like I'll be going to t-mobile tomorrow,
May wanna give them a call. going into a store they wont be able to help you
I've found that the primary merit to taking my phone to T-Mobile when it's messed up is so the guy behind the counter has to go through the list of things you already tried that the phone support agent is required to tell you to try again instead of having to do it myself. At least I can check out some cool phones and accessories while I wait. >.>

I spoke to a lovely Tmobile rep. She lead me through troubleshooting, except it was for Froyo, not gingerbread. When I brought this to her attention, and reminded her this was a nexus s, she connected me to samsung , and the call never went through.
Could a 5 year old SIM card magically stop working properly for SMS?

Yeah. Unfortunately, since the Nexus S isn't supported by T-Mobile, giving you a new SIM card is about all they'll probably do, unless you're lucky and get a rep who's actually tech savvy.

The @Tmobile twitter is way handy and the reps who run that, are actual engineers so send them a tweet
This could be many things... does the Nexus S not have the ability to do the *#*#4636#*#*?
That is the code on every Android phone (save a very few POS) to get into the "engineering" menu. Select "phone" from that menu, then scroll to the bottom and bingo, SMS service center number entry... first hit refresh to see what is shows, if not correct delete, enter in the correct one, then update.
If the phone doesn't have the *#*#4636#*#* menu, not sure... perhaps your SIM doesn't have the SMS service center # saved to it anymore? New SIM would correct that, or putting your sim in an basic phone, then changing the service center # on that phone would put it back on the SIM.
Also, have you tried texting yourself to make sure it isn't a cross carrier issue? I know Verizon, for example, doesn't play very nicely with other carriers (actually all carriers prioritize in network traffic over cross carrier traffic, but Verizon seems to be especially bad in my experiences).
(FYI, I was looking through as I am thinking about getting a Nexus S and saw this thread, and couldn't help but toss in a word or two given I sell cell phones and have to deal with things like this all day).

SMSC Update Error - Solved
I had the same problem - but found a way to solve it without replacing sim.
What you need to do is to insert the sim into an older phone and update message central number from there.
I fixed it using a nokia 3210 - after having tried using an n95 with no success.
While trying to figure out what was wrong i tested with another sim also - and when reading out the SMSC from the *#*#info#*#*-menu i found that the number is stored in some strangely obfuscated way.
Here is how it stores number for two of norways major operators:
Netcom: +4792001000 - shows as 06917429000100
Telenor: +4790002100 - shows as 06917409001200
What the first 4 digits are for, i'm not sure, perhaps a code for '+' but whats interesting is the last 10 digits - they are basically swapped around in pairs of two.
I tried inputting the digits for the other central in this manner, and sure enough - it saved ok!
Hope this help someone
grab another phone and put your SIM card in it
then try to send a SMS
see if that works properly or not.
if that works, then it might be a SNS setting issues
if the SIM card does not send SMS on another phone, then you'll need to swap your SIM card with a new one.
I had the exact same problem just few weeks ago

a one-phone solution from www google com tw/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=078232a74455bbf0&hl=en
Code:
OK, I managed to fix this. I'll post the answer because this was buried deep and is a pain.
Answer is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-926771.html
The relevant text is below. One thing I'd say is that the link is a bit vague on how to do the conversion. You need to put your SMSC number in the page, clear the rest of the info and press convert. You then need to ignore the numbers after 11.
For example, my vodafone +447785016005 goes to 0791447758100650110000910000AA00, which shortens to 079144775810065011. Go to the *#*#4636#*#* menu and put that in SMSC and hit update. Messages now send!!!. Hopefully I can save someone else the grief I've had all day...
"
to update the SMSC in android,
the number first need to be encoded
please use below url to encode the SMSC
http://www.twit88.com/home/utility/sms-pdu-encode-decode
for example, if your SMSC is number is +4531300000,
after encode, it is 0691541303000011
put this in the info page, and it will work.

The only issues I can see with Caller ID on the ICS builds is calls from Telus Mobility. All other call displays seem to work just fine.
Calls from Telus work fine on my phone. Then again with Superlite 5.0, I'm not having any caller ID issue.
Calls from telus landlines show up on my phone. Calls from Telus cell phones appear as unknown. I'm running Team Perfection ICS but I thought I read somewhere that it is a quirk with ICS, and the way that Rogers sends out its caller id packets. Don't quote me on that but that I believe is causing the issues.

Sorry for bumping this but, I just had a chance to test out a couple of different carriers and services.
Telus landlines = proper display of info.
Telus cell = unknown caller
Rogers cell = proper name and number.
Can anyone else maybe also confirm that it might just be telus numbers that we're having issues with. I don't know what can be done exactly but narrowing down the problem should help.

i can confirm. Anyone, on any carrier, not just telus, landline or cellphone, who has chosen to have a blank or "unknown" in the name field but still have their number shown, will shown up assuming u have their contact info. Anyone who has a name, say (john doe), and its displayed when they call normally, on say a landline, will show up as unknown

I had the same issue but was able to get the Name Display disabled to get the caller ID working! I had a value pack and they disable the specific feature from that pack
I have received many phone calls since I upgraded to Lollipop, and so far every call that I've had has a blank caller ID picture appear even if there if a picture assigned in contacts.
It was working yesterday, and when I changed the animations to .5x that is what caused it to not work. I changed back to 1.0x but it is still not working. Any ideas? Running D6616 T-Mobile Lollipop, do not want to reset phone again!

Unrelated but has anyone noticed that in conjuction with pictures not showing up, it also randomly shows same as home, work, mobile in the call log?
This is the correct fix. Freakin T-mobile Name ID app must have hooked into the IncallUI apk somehow. If anyone disabled, or deleted, the T-Mobile Name ID app, you need to re-enable or restore that app back for your caller photo to work.
I re-enabled T-Mobile Name ID, cleared data for it as well as Contacts and Contact Storage, allowed the phone to re-sync all my contacts, and I still get the orange calling screen instead of the contact photo. Not sure what else to try short of factory resetting, which I'm not going to do over something so trivial. Blah.
looks like the tmobile caller id app and the animation settings are linked to it, weird. I just did a master reset and left those as stock and everything works as should...
