Does anyone know how to remove Verizon's "City ID" app from a Win Mobile phone? I have seen lots of talk about removing it from Android phones, but not Win Mobile. There is no entry for it, under Remove Programs.
If you don't know, the "City ID" app adds its best guess as to the originating city and state for incoming calls, and tags the call as such on the display, and in the past calls list.
Verizon charges for this app after a brief trail period. If you dare to not pay for it, it doesn't self-uninstall. Instead, it starts to tag all incoming calls as "Unknown".
Sorry, but I find each call stating its origin as "Unknown" annoying. Besides, I would think the Win Mobile might be able to get the call's origin from an address in the Directory, but I bet "City ID" is blocking/overriding/inhibiting that.
Does anyone have any clue or hints on this?
Interesting, I didn't realize this was a paid app. I got it to work on my GW825 which is running on a different network. I wonder what would happen after 15 days? I'm guessing it would stop working.

If it simply stopped working, I would not have a problem. The problem is that it continues to work, but returns simply "unknown" as the call's originating city.
I rather have a blank (ie, nothing) than "unknown" displayed.
What happens if you change this to 0?

I'm wondering if it's feasible to create an apk that will do the following:
Upon incoming call, check the number. If it exists in a database of user-added numbers, or is Unknown/Private (if this setting is selected), then the call is answered by the phone automatically (without playing a ringtone), the mic is shut off, and it plays back a recording of the "The number you have dialed is not in service". Set it to disconnect after 30 seconds or so, if the other end of the call doesn't end it themselves.
I believe this would be useful as a sort of black-listing program, and should anyone call that number while blacklisted, they would most likely remove the number from their list. I see this being beneficial for telemarketers, collections calls, Ex-boyfriends/ex-girlfriends, that stranger in the bar you gave your number out to after you had too much to drink, etc.
While I realize there are a number of call-blocking programs out there, I think the main selling point of this would be that it would stop the calls from coming from that source.
Sorry if a thread like this exists somewhere, or even an app, but I couldn't find anything. I've just been thinking about this a lot lately, and while I have some experience programming, I have yet to touch anything for the Android OS.

Not exactly. The call blocking applications I've seen so far either send them directly to voicemail, or pick up the call and immediately hang up on them.
The primary difference I'm looking for is muting the microphone and playing back a message prior to hanging up the call.
Does this already exist? If not, is it possible to create? Again, I have no experience coding for Android, so I don't know what we can and cannot do, although I imagine it probably would be possible, preferably without root (so as to reach a wider audience).
i believe you can do this with google voice.
i think if you mark the number as spam or block it in google voice it plays that type of message.

i believe if you end up using google voice for voice mail (where you dont have to have a gv number) it does this also.
Ok so I've done two flashes today and both have come up with the same result, my caller ID shows Unknown name, Unknown number for all calls??
Here is the ICS rom I'm running now but I can't post in that forum because I'm a newb.
Has anyone else seen this yet? Or have I done something wrong? I have searched and can't find anything specific to this phone.
Also, if I go back to the original Gingerbread the numbers come up as they are supposed to.

I'm actually seeing this as well - sort of. When a contact calls, it displays caller ID correctly. When someone not in my contacts calls it shows up as unknown. HOWEVER, my Any.DO app has functionality for missed calls (you can add a missed call to your task list to call later or ignore) and when that pops up I see the phone number of who called.

when you go home, you probably connect to your home wi-fi. the app only works and does a "reverse lookup" whenever a data connection is working properly.
however, if the data of location is already stored on your contacts from previous SUCCESSFUL data reverse lookups, your phone will pull that information first if no data connection is available.
Strange... so I flashed the Alien ROM last night and all was good nunbers all worked etc. So just for kicks I've flashed back to the ATT rom and it's not working again.
all numbers just come up as Unknown (no number at all, just the word Unknown). I'm wondering if it simply takes some time for the networks to sync or something?
I'm gonna leave it on for a while and let you know what happens.

Are you using the built-in City ID app? cuz if so, it still requires a DATA connection.!! Wi-fi or Data. Without it, it will return "unknown". UNLESS it has been manually entered and/or retrieved from a previous session....

Thanks for that... I do have a data connection, both WIFI and 4G/LTE from my provider...It still doesn't work. I have no idea what you mean by a "City ID" app. Is there something I've missed?
I should also mention that this has NOTHING to do with my contacts. ANY call either a number I have in my contacts or a number that is not in my contacts, neither show up at all. When I get a phone call the screen goes black and I see the word UNKNOWN at the top and then the answer or hang up buttons at the bottom.

Naw that doesn't work for me, I don't have name display. It does that regardless, unless I spoof tbe caller id and then I work fine. I think rogers has a specific format that they detect for caller id and if it doesn't match then you get nothing.
I can't share how to spoof caller id because I have my VoIP company and so there certain things that I can do which otherwise isn't doable.
Basically the phone that's calling has to format the number in international calling string. +1 999 999 9999
Or the receiving phone has to change it to that since caller id works as a two step thing.

I had a very disturbing experience last night with some stalker texting me and I am concerned my phone and/or identity have been compromised. Here's what happened.
I have a friend whom I will call Bill Jones (not his real name). He and I text back and forth quite a bit. He texted me last night about something or other, and I texted back. A few minutes later I got a text from a number I didn't recognize that addressed me by my real name, even though almost everyone I know calls me by a nickname, Bill Jones included.
Our texting conversation went something like this:
Stalker: Hey [my real name]. What's up?
Me: Who is this?
Stalker: This is Bill.
Me: Bill who?
Stalker: Bill Jones. I want to tell you something, [my nickname].
Me: Is everything ok?
Stalker: Sort of, but I want to tell you something and I'm not sure how you will take it. LOL.
Me: Why are you calling me [my real name] and using a different number? [Note: The real Bill never calls me by my real name.]
Stalker: I got a new number but I wanted to say that I am attracted to you a lot...
Now, this is something that Bill would never say and I know immediately that this is an impostor. At this point I called the number I was receiving the texts from, and after one or two rings I heard a beep sound like the beep you hear when a voicemail starts recording, and then silence. I asked who was there and got no answer, and after several seconds I heard a computer-generated female voice say, "You can hang up now" and the line went dead.
I continued to text the stalker after this, and they continued to say they were "attracted" to me but were embarrassed to talk on the phone. I tried repeatedly to tell them to call me, but they wouldn't. Then I told them I wanted to meet them in person, and they tried to ask me where I was, but I wouldn't tell them. They wouldn't tell them where they were either. Finally they said they were going to bed and stopped responding.
I called that phone number repeatedly for the next 30-40 minutes, and each time I called I would get the same thing: a varying number of rings before they picked up, and then the voicemail-type beep, and after several seconds of silence the computer-generated female voice saying, "You can hang up now" and then the line goes dead.
I did a search for the number on Spokeo.com, and, even though they claimed they had full records on the owner of the number, after I paid the two dollars it said they didn't know anything about that number.
I spoke to Verizon, and they said no one had tried to access my account. They suggested I install and run a spyware detection app, which I did, and it didn't find any spyware except that it flagged Call Control and Handcent as being suspicious, but I'm sure they're not.
I have no third-party apps on my phone. All my apps are from the Google Play Store.
I believe that someone would need to have physical access to a phone to install spyware on it, and no one besides me has ever had physical access to my phone, and Bill Jones told me no one else has ever touched his phone either.
All of this happened at a friend's house, and when I drove home I pulled into my driveway, but then I realized I had my GPS on so I got back on the road and drove to the next town, where I pulled over in a subdivision, turned off GPS and mobile data, cutting off the trail, and then drove home. My phone is connected to my home wifi, but I use a VPN with encryption so I feel fairly safe that no one can get through that.
I suppose it is theoretically possible that this is some bizarre prank played by someone who knows both me and Bill Jones, but please take my word for it that no one I know pull a stunt like that.
It really bothers me that some stranger knows the following:
* My number.
* My nickname.
* My real name.
* The fact that I am friends with Bill Jones.
* Given the fact that they started texting me right when I texted Bill Jones makes me wonder if they can read my texts in real time.
I very much want to know what else they know about me and how they obtained this information and what I can do to protect myself. Please help me. I haven't been able to find a similar case by searching Google, so I'm really lost here. Thanks for your help people! If you need any more information please just ask and I'll be happy to tell you.

What you experianced could be the result of a "Man-In-the-Middle" attack... The whole idea of the attack is to see the messages in transit and get the identifying key from them (your phone number) then manipulate the orriginal messages with both users never knowing the manipulation. This can simply done by monitoring the connection... If your phone sends over Wi-Fi someone can easily see anything with a laptop near by... So if you sent messages from a public place and the "stalker" collected your ip-address from your phone it can be done remotely if even one of you is connected to a Wi-Fi signal regardless if you "think" your using it....

Interesting. How would such an attack allow them to discover both my nickname and real name and also the name of my friend? And should I be concerned about them stealing any other information from my phone such as passwords, financial information, credit card numbers, etc.?
Is there any other possibility for what could be happening?
By the way, no, my phone doesn't send calls or texts over wifi. Besides, as I said, I use the privateinternetaccess.com VPN which gives my phone a fake IP address and encrypts all my internet data.
I am wondering if anyone had this issue after rooting the phone, but when I receive calls, their caller ID comes wrong: The number is always is missing the country code:
for example, instead of receiving +1 248 123 4567, i get +248 123 4567. So not only saved numbers are not recognized because they do not match the caller id, but if i let the call stop and try to call back that missed call, I get the operator's automated message saying that the dialed number is wrong.
Any idea about how to fix this?

Go to phone/settings/calls and disable/enable assisted calling
Plus set your current country to match the country code

I tried both enabled and disabled assisted dialing. Problem still persisting. Country code is matching (USA). Any hints?

I installed prefixer a couple of days ago... still not fixed. Can you walk me through how you made it work please?
My phone keeps getting worse... home screen changing to pink randomly, dialtone not working anymore. Rooting my phone was the biggest mistake ever. I wish i could reverse all this process.
The phone app that came on my Phab2 Pro is not Google's and it doesn't seem to have any way to block spam callers. Anybody else have this problem & how can I fix it?
BTW, I tried installing the real phone app (http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...gle-phone-7-0-140755802-android-apk-download/) but it fails with the message "Parse error".
I installed the Asus contacts and Dialer from the play store. It does just fine for now.
I use Truecaller app. I googled 'best Call Blocker for android" and Truecaller came up on top of several review list.

I'm still using it and I have not had any issues. Has it worked at all for you? If so I'd probably Uninstall apps that you've installed since. If not then maybe start with a fresh install and put that on first. Since you have the same phone it has to be an app conflict.
I use Google Voice, I will never give out the phone number that my carrier assigned me. I only give out my Google Voice phone number, you can block callers or mark as spam. I did like one feature that comes with P2P phone app, the ability to record an active call and it will record both sides of the conversation.

Me too, no problems blocking with Google Voice. Problems with the cell line. Trash marketers programatically continuously dial all possible phone numbers, noting which are activated, without regard to whether or a not lines are cellular. Numbers that are answered progress to stage two, spam calls.

Tried backing out apps but no joy. Wiped phone and now all works. Think the problem was related to removing the SD card last week to make room for 2nd SIM.

Ahh, might have a solution for you. Back in the days before cell phones were popular, landlines ruled the earth with cassette tape answering machines. I would get the same trash and telephone marketers with their systems listening for the caller to say hello and connect you to their marketers, if no one picked up then their system would call until someone picked up. BUT! if that same system got a certain signal it would remove the phone number from their call list.
this link is automated recording of a disconnected or number not in service. Save this as your voicemail greeting, the tones you hear at the beginning are what tell their system that the number is not in service and remove you from their list.
How to block number in lenovo phab2 plus??......it has no option for privacy in settings and call details also does not show any options to block
