Is it just me, or... - Captivate General

It seems like every custom ROM (for what I can remember) gets really slow and laggy after using it for an extended amount of time. I've had my captivate for nearly 2 years and have flashed many roms and this phenomenon seems to occur on all of them I have used for more than a month or so.
I reboot my phone at least once a day, and install a minimum amount of apps.
So, is it just me?
Thanks

Could be your NAND or the partition on the SD for the ROM to be installed getting bad... It ins't on my phone though

The only thing is if I flash a fresh ROM my phone runs great for awhile.

In addition, I've noticed this phenomenon long ago and with a different phone (I got a couple replacements for other reasons in the past)

Same here, all the roms I've installed were smooth at first and start slowing down with time.

+3 here ... and now im getting application not found on apps even after a flash .. master clear time ?
or?

I flashed many GB roms for long time...without doing clean flash (flashing GB stock)...and my phone started lagging like **** on every GB rom out there....this is I am talking about before ICS came out...
then I completely wiped my phone...as much as it allows...then started again by flashing GB bootloader....super smooth again...
But with ICS i am not seeing that issue yet...

I didn't notice any lag for several weeks or so on ics, but it seems to start lagging eventually. I wonder if it could be that log files start to accumulate over time or something like that and slows down the phone.

possible, but roughly how many user apps do you have/keep?
In some ROMs in the past there have been memory leaks that would cause this behavior. More often it is a poorly written app that is leaking memory but is not getting killed.
So if it's been a fairly consistent issue take a look at your most commonly used apps. If it's been a flat (across multiple ROMs) issue then consider any long standing apps.
If it helps it may even be a Linux kernel issue, cuz on my PC that runs ubuntu I see a memory leak. Tho with what is effectively 6 GB of RAM I don't run into a slow down issue for weeks.
leaked from my ICS- FUSED SGS I897 contaminating you via XDA app.

ics will lag if you are using glitch kernel WITHOUT having the app NStools.
i found this out the hard way. installed NStools (as recomended by glitch page) and my lag went away.
as the day went on, and i used my phone the memory would fill up and not clear as it should, i could even open an app 8 hours after last using the app and it would still be on the same page/info i left it on. the app never gets killed.
sixstringsgs does not agree that NStools affects it in such a way but personal experience says otherwise. i was ready to go back to gingerbread. now i would never consider it.

Yeah I've seen this too. Using ext4 helped some. I did some tweaking on occasion, which would cause me to wipe cache and dalvic. Sometimes that seemed to speed it up.
I am now trying the Simply Stock odexed gb rom version 2.0. It has been amazingly smooth the first few days, I hope it holds up.

You can't use EXT4 on an MTD ROM. They were talking about an ICS ROM, not an ICS themed ROM

The op talks about flashing for 2 years. That is who my post was addressing.

I know who you were addressing. And if you read the 99% of the conversation has been about ICS ROMs (WHICH ARE BASED ON MTD file system). So EXT4,3,2 are out of the question

chill out b-eock he was just offering his 2 cents, and so are you.

Oddly enough, a couple of days ago I manually turned off my gps and the phone seems to be behaving normally. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence out not.

Want for Gingerbread?

I was hoping to get your guys opinion on this. Should I wait at least until mid October for gingerbread, or should I say forget it and install a custom Rom now? In otherwords, do you think gingerbread will really be here soon?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
We kinda think its close. But why not try a custom rom. The flash time and return to stock time is les than 15 minutes. Now if you are trying not to void your warranty,I guess I can dig that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
It's a really high quality refurb from Att and has 2 months of warranty left. But I doubt I'd brick it. Even if I did I'd use gtg's unbricker. Hmm... I'm still on the fence though. Need more opinions.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Well the custom roms offer some things stock doesnt yet its up to you and your needs.
Anyways now with the video recording fix using a GB rom its a nice choice. I was "stuck" on Froyo since the fps thingy on Gb roms but now that its fixed ive been runnin Infused 2.2.3 and its smooth.
There are some more rom options so you could browse and take your choice.

If you're willing to give up HDMI output and live with a few minor bugs, you can have Gingerbread now.
Also data speeds are still not fixed in GB, although one fix I tried seems to have had far better results than I expected so there is promise there. I'm asking for some confirmation of that, as I live in an area with always-crappy speeds so I can't really test it.

Yea I was going to wait, but I could not stand it anymore. I am on 2.2.2 with Entropy's kernel. The data speeds seem mostly restored, even though i used to get almost another mb usually. If you do go to Gingerbread now, I will say the perfect pair is Infused 2.2.3 (or 2.2.2) with Infusion 1.0 (overclock kernel) for heavy games users. For daily needs and internet speed, I would say again Infused 2.2.3 (or 2.2.2) with Entropy's kernel. I have not tried Serendipity, but I have heard almost nothing bad about that too.
I installed S7 a few weeks ago, expecting to only stay on it a few days as I tried a few other ROMs. I still want to fix the Hellraiser "stuck battery notifications" issue.
I've been very happy with S7 - At some point I'll be returning to CM7, but I've been so busy that I haven't had time to mess with reflashing another ROM.
UCKI5 apparently just got leaked, so I may just wait. Seems like it's close.

What rom do you users think is the best for the Sidekick? I currently am using the ADW Quietly Brilliant one and it restarts a lot on me, but I am having hard time deciding which one to switch to.
This device tends to ***** out regardless of the ROM. Glorious Overdose tends to last the longest... been 3 days since my last re-flash. Glorious rocks launcher pro... not quite ADW but works hehe

iv been running GOV2 since it came out with 0 problems. but if you want a super light ROM GCV2 is also very stable.

No, I don't have my phone OC'ed. If you heavily use you're phone you'd experience random reboots. If you think about it, they're not really random, just overload reboots.... but mostly only on Glorious Overdose. All of revolutions roms overload reboot. His ics rom randomly reboots....

Back to GB..

After spending a couple months bouncing back n forth between different ICS roms, I'm happily back on the latest cm7 nightly. ICS is nice, but the Captivate is anything but designed for it. Cm7 is so much smoother, glitch free, bug free, simplistic, and just all around better energy for a rom. I am NOT dissing ICS, I'm simply saying our phones don't necessarily run better on ICS just because its "new" and "hip". Also, is it just me or is the ICS theming a bit depressing?

Is it happening to a large percentage of cappy owners running ICS?

From what I've seen, I wouldn't say a lot of peeps are getting it but the threat still lingers. Plus there might be more cases that haven't been reported cause they just ditch the phone and get another.

To each his/her own, but each device is different. My wife's captivate runs everything I throw at it with no problems and no lag. My own captivate is very picky. I tried most of the ICS roms, I think, and it only likes Team ICSSGS. It was a bit laggy at first but then I flashed Glitch kernel and lightly overclocked to 1248mhz on stock volts. Now it's buttery smooth, much more so than any GB rom or stock.
I am waiting on a SGSII ICS port so we get a nice colorful dialer and Samsung themes..
I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I'm on nightly THS ICS and totally happy with it. No problem whatsoever
I guess not every Cappy is happy with ICS though. My gf's gets SOD and random reboot with ICS. I'm trying other ICS ROMs with it and may finally get it back to GB.

Have you tried SlimICS? I have it on my phone and I know a few people that put it on their captivates, no problems so far...
Have you tried ZSimplyAOKP? No seriously, have you? I don't think anyone who's used this ROM would want to go back to GINGERBREAD :what: . Before you lose all hope give this one a go.

ICS
I've just recently switched back to Darky after trying nearly every ICS rom that I could flash. I had absolutely zero problems with them, and in my opinion the launchers and overall UI is much smoother than Gingerbread. However, I've had my Cappy for almost two years, and while I'm due for an upgrade, I love the phone too much to see it bricked because of an issue that nobody seems to be able to explain or figure out (including myself). But one thing is for certain... it has been a great couple of years and I'll stretch it out as long as I can!
I've try many roms too. zsimplyAOKP, DOCs, SlimICS, change modems, try each rom with different kernel... and Im thinking hard to get back to stock.
I have one of those old cappy who SoD over 80% bttery charge on stock.
Im now doing some testing with captivate keep alive at all time ON and even with that notice 1 or 2 reboots per day.
I went back to stock 2.3.3 for a bit too after getting pissed at the instability of the 5 or 6 ICS roms i flashed/tested out. In fact, one ICS kernel actually bjorked my USB port into thinking it was being used when it wasn't and vice versa. The real drag was not having hspda!! I've recently switched back to slimICS and have been absolutely LOVING it. I won't be switching roms again any time soon. As one stated previously in this thread, each cappy seems to have a mind of it's own
I have been using Slim ICS (with Apex Lancher) for 2 months now, all I can say is...WOW! It is super stable, tons of features and speedy too. Faster then CM7 as I recall. With every release it keeps getting better. Seriously, give it a try. With Slim on my Cappy I can happily wait for a quad core phone that catches my attention.

Well after reading up on the "encryption unsuccessful" issue, I decided to play it safe and go back to GB until a fix is discovered.
GB was good. But out of stock ROMs Froyo had the best battery life. And Eclair was good too. And just imagine how fast and cool Donut would be on our Cappies! Anyone to port?

Phone sluggish after installing HFS

Hey, I just installed HFS and my phone stutters a lot while installing apps. I did not have this problem in GB or CM7. I have only had this phone for 2 days, so I'm not sure if its just me not remembering how fast it was in GB or CM7.
I have the phone overclocked to 1.45 Ghz. Same problem. The phone will completely lock up and scrolling through things is a nightmare while installing apps while I think I remember happily using my phone while installing apps in GB or CM7.
I have reflashed a few times, I don't think it has fixed it.
Even on gingerbread it hiccups when installing. ICS isn't efficient for our phone so that might be why it's not too good when installing.

Fastest rom? I just want no redraws and lag, always had this problem!

I did the 5 steps to make phone snappier and I noticed that my phone is now faster I used to always gey redraws rather frequently, but I still get redraws, enough to still bother me. Advice on how to be faster? I am on stock FP1 rooted using twl.launcher as my main launcher and would like to keep this setup. I am willing to switch roms or anything, all I want is zero redraws, really hate it

edit the line in the build.prop to lock in the home screen (set it =1).
been there done that...no avail.. thought it was just gingerbread ..then fp1 came i got excited..worked better for a while, then back to the same this..came across that 5 steps, did that, did the build.prop .. still feels laggy sometimes..has gotten better i might add, but enough to make me feel like i should switch phones
Jellybean is the only thing that going to get you to a point where you can reasonably get "no lag." Even the newer dual-core phones on ICS get laggy from time to time, and it's worse on this phone. The best you're going to do on this phone is mitigate it.

right.
but I really do not have an lag or redraw issues. part of the trouble shooting is to reduce the number of apps on your phone and on the screen. I place all of my apps in folders and thus have no redraw issues since. some launchers like GO and HOLO help too.
Ehm...I never get redraws unless I restart the launcher manually. Use V6 Supercharger.

I've never really gotten v6 to work on fp1 but I have no redraws at all but if you have followed my 5 steps you should have no problems. If you use go launcher or holo there is a setting for "keep in memory" that works really well with the build.prop edit

V6 "works" on FP1 in that it applies successfully, but I've never run V6 on this phone that it didn't run like complete crap after a few days. I've played with recent versions of the V6 script and found them to be even worse for me than the older versions. I know kvswim says he has no issues, but it kills my performance worse than anything else I've ever done.
Yeah, it's really odd that it works perfectly fine for some and just makes things worse for others.

I can imagine it being down to the use case. The script changes OOM groupings of apps which causes them to be killed in a different order than default. Regardless of how Zep advertises it, that's probably not a one size fits all proposition. I know I strongly disagree with the logic of some of the ICS regroupings that he seems quite proud of.
