About to root a Captivate ATT on version 2.6.32.9 / Android 2.2 / build# froyo.UCKB1 / baseband I897UCKB1
Going to use the SuperOneClick by shortfuse, install RM and backup, install TiBu and backup, then wipe and flash serendipity 7 (that is what he wants).
Does it sound like I have everything in order? Any other recommendations?
I have a Galaxy Nexus and have rooted it as well as my wifes Inc just want to triple check myself since it it someone else phone. TIA
to flash a rom, you need to flash CWM recovery first....
Also you are on froyo Bootloader and serendipity 7 is GB rom (right?)...means you have to flash GB bootloader first...then a kernel with CWM cooked in...then you can wipe and flash serendipity 7 rom...
Read this guide carefully before doing anything...thats my recommendations

Dang forgot that step ok so when I dnld and install RM after rooting I need to flash CWM. Check.
Step I'm confused about (but will continue researching throughout the day): GB bootloader? Flash it in CWM like a normal zip flash? Then reboot. Reboot again back into cwm and flash a kernel with cwm cooked in? Then wipe and flash Serendipity 7 is the correct order?
Thanks for the reply

Thanks so much will do!
A lot of info in that thread thanks. Do you recommend using the heimdall or odin method?
Odin is from Samsung and can be a bit iffy with the connection.
heimdall is open source and developed by the xda/Android development community and seems to be less troublesome for users with Odin problems.

Thanks. He want's stability (he is clueless with electronics) so after rooting another buddies captivate on ATT a year ago with Seredipity froyo he still loves it, gps works great for nav, etc..
So I was thinking Serendipity GB for this friend. Is ICS stable yet on the captivate? I love it on my GN, but he needs reliability. Stick with GB? Froyo? Any other suggestions?
GB roms are stable alright, as the official GB for captivate is released...they are in very good condition...
I am using ICS rom's since January...and most are pretty stable....I never had any issue which will take me away from ICS rom..you should give them a try...

Nothing...I just didn't want to offer a 20 page list of equally good ROMs so I used the ones I have tried.
After months of waiting and finally getting over my fears of flashing, I rooted and flashed the stock 2.2 rom to my captivate today!
my opinion, just use the stock 2.2. it's frickin amazing. I'm thrilled and can't believe it took this long for me to build up the courage to flash. from the gps working to the beautiful text to speech ( which I'm using to write this even as we speak..lol); I can't get over how much I love this.
So, use the odin flasher and have fun!
Many thanks to all the developers on XDA who worked so hard to get 2.2 out all of us!

How do i use odin? Do you have a link?
I can't speak in regard to other ROMs as I have only tried working with Cognition.
The thing is, if you can handle the complexities of Lagfix, installing Cognition is a piece of cake. The instructions that nbs11 posted are pretty much it, except that you should disable whatever lagfix you used before you do it, and use Android ID changer to back up your Android ID. As far as Odin goes, you only need it if:
1. You really like your phone to be clean before you upgrade
2. Something goes wrong.
I panicked the first time something went wrong. I should tell you my story. I forgot to use Android ID changer, and also forgot to copy the data from a few other things from my original Eclair build. So, I went back to one of my backups. I didn't realize that the backup didn;t include the kernel, so the rolled-back phone no longer booted. Odin to the rescue. It flashed an idiot-proof stock version, then I used ROM manager to get to my backed-up data, re-flashed with Odin, and ran the Cognition backup. It all worked fine.
TL;DR. You just need ROM Manager and a little planning, and Odin will bail you out in the off chance you screw something up.
Someone who likes setting up a phone less than I do should make a back-up checklist.
Oh, and here's a link to everything you need to know about Odin:

I'm officially changing my mind. I've been using Cognition 3.04 now for about a week. I've not run into ANY issues. In the first week of using the leaked "official" 2.2 release, I'd already run into a few minor bugs, then over the course of a month, ended up with a fun that was stuck in a reboot loop...totally random issue, nothing had changed on the phone, it just went nutz on me.
I flashed to Cognition and am absolutely LOVING it!!! If you're going to flash a ROM, skip the "official" leaked 2.2 and go for Cognition. It's great! Smooth, fast, and without bloatware.
I do have to admit, yes I know I'll catch some flak for it, but I do miss the Samsung Media Hub (Cognition has it removed as Bloatware). Other than that....no issues at all!
Has anyone used these methods on a Rogers Captivate (I897)?

Can I use odin one click to revert to stock even though I have 1101 build cappy? It seems oc only works for 1010 and below. Should I use odin 3 and flash stock jf6 instead? Currently on cog 4.4.

some people have trouble with odin one click with newer models. some dont.
you can flash anything with the odin 3 flasher.
avoid stocks with bootloaders. or "3 button fix" versions.
if you dont flash bootloaders you should never hard brick.
Once back to stock, do you know if I can use kies to flash official froyo upgrade, or will that be a prob after flashing custom rom? Is there an odin flash that will get me stock 2.2 without using any bootloaders? I've searched, but seems like everything takes you back to eclair.

You could use the one Trusselo made.. In his sig right above your post
thats for rogers... is he rogers...?
I'm at&t. same thing right? I got one completely dead, bricked, cappy in the hands of samsung right now. Hoping they'll replace or fix me. Got one cappy in my hand that's being "borrowed" for the 30 day window till I find out what's up with the one samsung has. Hoping I can get functioning cappy back from samsung, and talk the wife into letting me keep the "borrowed" one. That way I have a stable one, and one to mess around with. Planning on taking on gingerbread, only once I've covered all my bases.....I think. Just wanted to know best way back to stock, just in case I needed to bring back the phone. Like I said, it's a 1101 build, and I'm currently running Cog4.4, so I didn't want to brick it with one click. Dumb noob question, but are boot animations same/diff from bootloaders. I opened archive on cog 4 and in system/bin their are boot animations. I flashed cog via rom manager. Did i just get lucky or are these not bootloaders, just animations? Is there a thread that shows which roms come with bootloaders and which don't?
read this it explains the boot process and what a bootloader is
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
bootloaders are not the same as a boot animation.
animations are found in /system/media/bootanimation.zip
you didnt get lucky with cognition flashing a bootloader that will only **** **** up if you have gingerbread bootloaders which you didnt, so flashing a froyo secondary bootloader was fine (thats why its in there)
The bootloaders would be in the updates folder of the zip.
Thanks studacris. Seems the more I learn about all this, the more ii find stuff I didn't know. Constantly on forum trying to learn so I don't have to bother guys like you. Since I got ur attention, flashing to i9000 rom would require bootloaders correct? Looking to do that next. Currently im US, att, i896. Sorry to bother ya.

Sorry I meant i897
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
nope new bootloaders are only needed if you are jumping to gingerbread
only flashing the i9000 2.3.3 roms requires bootloaders. all the 2.2.1 roms will work without danger of bricking.
if all you did on the borrowed cappy is root and flash a kernel you can flash the backed up kernel and then unroot. (did you use sgs kernel flasher to flash the kernel like when we talked about it? did you back up the kernel?)
you might want to look at getting a jig just to have one around. samsung keeps releasing new builds of the phone and there are unknowns. there are mixed reports from the 1010 build and up. you should be able to use odin 1.7 and flash the jf6 from icezar1 and you still have stock bootloaders so there "should" be no need for odin one click.
all the problems last time must have been do to the gingerbread bootloaders in combination with your 1010 build phone, i should have told you to use odin one click, infact you should have had a jig before i encouraged you to try gingerbread, my fault, but i didnt have problems when i did the same thing.
Should I flash a i9000 kernel before a i9000 rom? Then after all is said and done, find a compatible modem? Only reason I want to go to i9000 rom is because there seems to be more available. Can I do all this via sgs kernel flasher and rom manager/cwm or does it have to be done odin for the first switch to i9000? I'm assuming I can go back between sgh I897 and i9000 no prob since no ginger boots are involved? Just to be clear, even if I flash a rom with bootloaders, it shouldn't be a prob as long as it's 2.2 rom? Are 2.2 boots backwards compatible if i want to flash back to stock? I ask cuz prob can't use oneclick cuz my build is to new. again, don't mean to be a pest. cut me off whenever you feel like it.
Roms are all in one package kernel and modems are included.
Hey everyone im kinda new to the forums.. Anyways i just downloaded GB 2.3.3 the other day. Well after that i realized my phone wasnt rooted anymore. So i updated simpleoneclick and it wouldnt work. Anyone had any success rooting their g2x after the update?

At the present time, there is no root for the GB update. There is a way to root GB but it required going back to 2.2.2 and then loading a custom GB rom.

Yes - flashing it has rooted your phone. I am somewhat surprised by this however. I would have thought rooting was done at a deeper level then anything in a ROM, but apparently that is not the case.
Good news is whatever the case, it works.
Recovery has nothing to do with the rooted status of your phone. Nvflash and cwm work no matter what.

Having an unlocked/unencrypted bootloader gives us G2X owners a LOT of flexibility with what can be done with our phones in terms of customization. Its one of the main reasons I couldn't wait for this phone to be released. Hello everyone,
I am going to be getting my SGS 4G via Warranty Replacement tomorrow. My first question is that do I need to root to use ODIN? Also do you need to flash a different Froyo ROM over the Stock ROM? Finally what do you guys think is the best STOCK Gingerbread ROM.
Thanks for all of you help
MacFan74318
www.technology-buzz.com
you dont have to root to use odin. you can flash any rom posted in the bible and it should root it for you. you can odin any froyo from any other froyo rom. also, you can flash straight to gb if the rom you are flashing has the gb bootloaders.
i would go with the icbinb kh1 leak for now
Thanks a lot for your advice!
Also how is the performance compared to the myTouch 4G? That is the phone I am coming to and is their anything that you love/hate about the phone? Also do you need to flash a boot loader for icbinb kh1?
Thanks,
MacFan74318
If you're new to flashing, I would actually suggest for you NOT to flash any GB ROMs. The whole process of flashing one is so complicated right now. You probably have to reserve a whole day just to try and get it working. Flashing a Froyo ROM would be the easiest though.
Hmm that seems about right, I would like to try and wrap my head around it so I can make a guide so it can be easier for others. Also who is Linda? I have heard about it in the ROM's?

I think Linda has something to do with EXT4/Voodoo. You hear her voice when you convert your filesystem from rfs to ext4. I can barely understand what she's saying, and in my opinion, she's ANNOYING! Lol .
Can someone tell me if this will work?
So this is the ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193751 (GingerBread ROM ?)
So in theory all I have to do is to put the phone in download mode and flash via ODIN? Do I need a GB Bootloader for this? (If so where can I find one)
Finally to overclock I just use Tegrak Overclock?
macfan74318
My advice is you read a whole lot. The myTouch 4G is easy to work with, took 2 steps to get from Froyo to GB. But for Samsung GS4G it's a whole lot more complicated and much more steps. Just learn how to use Odin as it's pretty much required for almost anything. Anyways, good luck.

Hello, I am a long-time viewer of xda but a new member, this is my first post.
(and yes, i looked for a similar theard. i could not find one.)
So, onto the problem.
I flashed Infinitum 1.1.1 to my Infuse using cwm recovery. I noticed problems right off the bat when after i had installed the zip, i rebooted into recovery then it got stuck on the samsung logo and i had to pull the battery (a normal event when flashing this rom) So when i pulled the battery and booted into recovery to try again, the cwm recovery was terribly screwed up. The top half of the screen was pixelated, and the navigation menu was off center. I was still able to use cwm to flash the rom successfully, But cwm remains srewed up.
So i tried to reflash cwm recovery using rom manager. but when i rebooted i was stuck in a recovery boot-loop that i had to get out of using odin.
I then flashed the rom again using the same procedure suggested by its developer, and it worked, but cwm is still acting as it was before. (the pixelated top half of the screen and the off center navigation menu. )
So can i get some help? i thought about removing cwm the using some other recovery. I also heard that cwm wont work on ics, but im unsure what it is.
Thanks in advance.
You don't have Gingerbread bootloaders. That's why recovery looks the way it does.
You need to Odin or Heimdall back to Gingerbread stock (I find Heimdall much easier for this) and then flash Entropy's DD kernel to get back into red recovery to flash Infinitum.

Yeah, ICS recovery doesn't play nice with Froyo bootloaders.

Yeah...heimdal is the best way to get bootloaders...odin doesnt always do it and no custom rom includes them that i am aware of...

Here is how to do it...
1) Download uclb3 heimdal by qckster
2) open the program
3) put phone in download mode
4) click flash (leave program open when finished DO NOT CLOSE)
5) after it finishes and your phone reboots, put the phone back in download mode and reconnect to PC
6) click flash bootloader on the heimdal program you left running
7) flash, let reboot and your problems should be gone
Download mode instructions
1) pull battery
2) put battery back in
3) hold volume up + down
4) connect phone to PC with USB cable *don't let go of volume*
Just because you were on gingerbread previously does nit mean you have ginger bread boot loaders...I had ginger bread since the first leaks and did not have boot loaders until a month or two ago when I flashed them using those steps above...

Thank you for posting the guide. I literally just got done flashing GB bootloaders to my Infuse because of the rainbow Recovery when I'm on ICS. I used Odin though and used GB loader that a member posted in the AOKP Uniporn thread. I was scared but there really isn't anything to be afraid of. I tried using Heimdall but dang that was nerve racking because I was trying to use it on Mac and it wouldn't let me do the flash.

Good deal, glad you got it sorted out. And to clear up some confusion that is in this thread: you don't have to flash an entire Gingerbread rom to get the bootloaders. We all have our preferred ways of doing it, but you CAN flash just the bootloaders.
Here is both a Heimdall and an Odin way to get JUST the bootloaders. That's all that is necessary for someone who has rainbow distortion issues on an ICS or Gingerbread rom.:
See the third post (HERE) in Entropy512's Unofficial CM9 thread for instructions on how to flash just the bootloaders using the Heimdall command line. Or, see the answer to question 1.) in the FAQ of the rooted UCLB3 Odin thread which is HERE.

Heimdall is one way to get the bootloaders, and here's how I did it.:
heimdall flash --primary-boot boot.bin --secondary-boot Sbl.bin
The second part of your statement isn't true. Odin doesn't do it only when the user can't figure out how to use Odin.
thank you everyone.
Being a creature of habit i ended up flashing to rom and bootloaders using odin. that did indeed fix CWM right up.

I used Odin though and used GB loader that a member posted in the AOKP Uniporn thread. I was scared but there really isn't anything to be afraid of. I tried using Heimdall but dang that was nerve racking because I was trying to use it on Mac and it wouldn't let me do the flash.

Unfortunately I haven't had this device for over 3 years now. You'll have to do some searching for that.
