Hello everyone,
I am going to be getting my SGS 4G via Warranty Replacement tomorrow. My first question is that do I need to root to use ODIN? Also do you need to flash a different Froyo ROM over the Stock ROM? Finally what do you guys think is the best STOCK Gingerbread ROM.
Thanks for all of you help
MacFan74318
www.technology-buzz.com
you dont have to root to use odin. you can flash any rom posted in the bible and it should root it for you. you can odin any froyo from any other froyo rom. also, you can flash straight to gb if the rom you are flashing has the gb bootloaders.
i would go with the icbinb kh1 leak for now
Thanks a lot for your advice!
Also how is the performance compared to the myTouch 4G? That is the phone I am coming to and is their anything that you love/hate about the phone? Also do you need to flash a boot loader for icbinb kh1?
Thanks,
MacFan74318
If you're new to flashing, I would actually suggest for you NOT to flash any GB ROMs. The whole process of flashing one is so complicated right now. You probably have to reserve a whole day just to try and get it working. Flashing a Froyo ROM would be the easiest though.
Hmm that seems about right, I would like to try and wrap my head around it so I can make a guide so it can be easier for others. Also who is Linda? I have heard about it in the ROM's?

I think Linda has something to do with EXT4/Voodoo. You hear her voice when you convert your filesystem from rfs to ext4. I can barely understand what she's saying, and in my opinion, she's ANNOYING! Lol .
Can someone tell me if this will work?
So this is the ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193751 (GingerBread ROM ?)
So in theory all I have to do is to put the phone in download mode and flash via ODIN? Do I need a GB Bootloader for this? (If so where can I find one)
Finally to overclock I just use Tegrak Overclock?
macfan74318
My advice is you read a whole lot. The myTouch 4G is easy to work with, took 2 steps to get from Froyo to GB. But for Samsung GS4G it's a whole lot more complicated and much more steps. Just learn how to use Odin as it's pretty much required for almost anything. Anyways, good luck.

If you want gingerbread for sgs4g this is the link. Its pretty straight forward.
Download and unrar
Place files in Odin.
Load the files by this order:
pit: Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit
PDA: CODE_T959VUVKG4_CL385158_REV00_user_low_noship.tar .md5
Phone: T959VUVKG4-Phone-CL1037720.tar.md5
CSC: SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5
and check "Re-Partition" "Auto Reboot" "F. Reset Time"
Heres the link

Hope this helps you get some gb.

I have just flashed GR-11 on my Cappy and I have some questions.
GR-11 and Continuum have different instructions and ways on how to update the BootLoader. Do they end up with the same end product?
So does following the guide for GR-11 allows me to flash Continuum without having to go back to stock? or do I have to go back to stock before flashing Continuum (re-update bootloader)
Side questions, could you use Froyo Rom after updating the BootLoader?
Thanx
If you have the JVB bootloaders already installed you can change to another JVB rom without reinstalling bootloaders. A couple of people in GR11 thread have reported going from C5 to GR11 with no issues. You cannot however run a froyo rom on these. You must flash back to stock to get correct bootloaders.
Yes you can.. I had absolutely no problem running stock 2.1 or serendipity 6.4 with the new bootloaders.
Just make sure the rom you're flashing doesn't include an sbl.bin (like cognition does) or you risk hard bricking your device.

I stand corrected.
hard brick = dead even with jig?
or recoverable with jig?
oh and how do I know whether a rom has sbl.bin inside or not?
and I did post this on GR-11, but I thought I might ask here as well,
does changing the kernel on GR-11 from the instruction to Talon matters?
file system wise it doesn't change right?

It's not even a question of risk. it's a GUARANTEE if it contains a froyo sbl.bin while you're on a gb boot.bin you will brick it. For good. dead. No life. A shell if it's former glory. A corpse... I think I made my point
look in the updates folder if the rom zip you wanna flash, if it had an sbl.bin delete it.
if you wanna flash talon just pop it in the pda slot of odin and flash like the instructions say, if you look in the .tar you will see it only contains a zImage which is the kernel.

Hard brick as in the hardware buttons or jig won't do anything. It'll just sit at a black screen until you mail it to Samsung for repairs.
You can check to see if a rom contains bootloaders by opening the zip archive. There will normally be three folders, META-INF, system, and a third one usually (but not always) called updates. Look into that last one. If it contains either boot.bin, sbl.bin or both, you might want to take a pass on that rom.

Need to update the update script if you're going to delete things from the package..
So to be safe, just stay in Gingerbread and nothing should go wrong right?
Flashing kernel and other roms should be safe as long as they are meant for Gingerbread then I conclude?
Thanx!
Once you have the boatloader installed you should be ok. Flashing between Roms should be ok if its compatible with the kernel as long the Roms are based off the gingerbread boatloader

Do I have to flash the GB Bootloader if I want to go up to a JW1 2.3.6 rom from a JVP 2.3.4 rom?

Hey guys, I'm finally gonna flash GB, i know this ain't big news to any of you, but it is to me haha. So, i'm going to list the steps i'm going to take to flash it, these are according to the guides i've watched and read, but weren't specific enough to me. PREPARE TO READ.
By the way, my files are: KG4 leak by chadster, KG4 kernel with root&voodoo by Dr.Honk, and Valhalla ROM by Whitehawkx. PROPS TO THESE AWESOME DEVS!
1)Boot into recovery, and disable voodoo, reboot again to ensure re-conversion to rfs.
2)Boot into recovery again, this time go to: advanced>partition>create one with 2048(whatever that means? o_o)
3)Open up odin(I'm using 1.85), power off phone, Enter download mode, hold two volume keys, plug in USB.
4)Enter files according to file name.
PIT-Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit
PDA-CODE_T959VUVKG4_CL385158_REV00_user_low_noship.tar.md5
Phone-T959VUVKG4-Phone-CL1037720.tar.md5
CSC-SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5
(I've heard that re-partition checks itself on while entering the files, and that you should leave it on.)
5)DOUBLE CHECK, I don't wanna brick my phone!
6)HIT START! WOO, hope it'll work for me.
7)If the phone boots, you can let it boot up then Power Off it, or do a battery pull.
8)Hit reset on odin, then re-enter Download Mode, via instruction #3.
9)This time, click PDA, and find Dr.Honks KG4 kernel w/ root&voodoo that you downloaded.
10)HIT START! WOO!
11)This is confusing to me, as according to the guides and videos, YOU CAN battery pull when it boots or Power off after boot-up and enter Recovery by holding Volume keys and Power/Unlock simultaneously(which means at the same time) and release when it boots up. It should boot up into RED CWM, then i'll want to check mounts(OR SHOULD I WIPE EVERYTHING: DATA,CACHE,DAVLIK first?)and make sure that they're UMMU.
12)Go to the main screen of recovery, select zip from sd, select (INSERT ROM OF CHOICE HERE), I'm flashing valhalla, it's been a tough debate of audiophile FTW or that.
13)LET IT FLASH YO!
14)I should end up in recovery still, recheck mounts.
15)(NOT POSITIVE IF THIS'LL WORK, but I'm trying)Flash busyboxinstaller.zip from FB's starter guide thread.
16)After that's done, go to the voodoo section, enable it on next boot, then REBOOT.
17)PRAY THAT IT'LL CONVERT(DAMN WELL BETTER!)
18)If it booted up, and errrrthang's all good. I'll enjoy a cup of coffee and some GINGERBREAD.
Well, that wasn't too much was it? Please comment to recorrect my errors or to say I'm good to go, as this will be my way of flashing GB. I'll appreciate any feedback AS LONG AS I GET FEEDBACK.
P.S- I would love it if some devs would also help give me the green light.
Thanks awesome community!
you don't need to use the pit file but every thing else looks good to me
Looks good flash away
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
sweet, thanks!
Looks like you've done you're homework and you should be good.. Not sure but I think that newer roms don't need the mount unmounts, as was case for me and icbinb.. You should be good. Good luck
They should just sticky this so that everyone one else flashing from froyo can just follow these directions

I made the mistake of not backing it up and lost EVERYTHING lol
Question..... if per say u get a new phone and Odin the same GB release do u have to redo the whole partioning of the sd card again? even if u did it prior on ur other phone?
Yeah, I've been reading up on GB ever since the KG4 leak, just been afraid to actually flash it, due to no experience with ODIN. This wasn't really supposed to be a guide, just a reassurance for me. But I don't mind people using it as one, I tried to make it as specific as possible. I appreciate the feedback guys, it makes me feel secure. LOL
P.S- I still haven't flashed it yet, I noticed my micro usb it fitting very loosely on my 4G, and since one mistake in ODIN can doom your phone, I'm extremely cautious. BUT I WANT GB! GAAAHHHHHH.

Yeah, you will, unless you use the same micro sd that you partitioned EXT4 with, with your new phone.

Got it... ya i did on my old phone and didnt want to go thru the headache again lol..... also..... if u had to re-flash ur phone from stock 2.2.1 what roms would u start with and what would be ur process?
I started with:
[Rom][ODIN] Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 Deodexed + Root KF2
then Odin again:
[Kernel][GB] Stock Kernel + CWM + Voodoo EXT4 Lagfix
Am I doing it correctly or would u recommend otherwise?
((Sorry just making sure im up to date))

From stock 2.2.1 to 2.3.4 gb? I would use the same method in the op. But i would skip the voodoo steps in the begin because if i started from stock 2.2.1, all i would need to do is access download mode to odin kg4 leak. This is because it's easier to start without voodoo i think. And after flashing the kg4 kernel, you'll have voodoo recovery back. If linda wont convert, i guess you just repartition again. it's almost the same as the method i will use, someday... LOL.
Lol...did you flash it/need help with anything?

I have rooted my phone, and am trying to put miui on it. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Infuse 4G Rogers. I have looked for instructions on how to do the 3e recovery mod so I can put miui on my phone, but I can't get it to work. I am not even 100% sure I'm on the right track. All the instructions I find are confusing as they ask to put files on but don't have links to download the files, or they just assume I know how to do something, or know what they are referencing. I have rooted my phone, now I want to put miui on. I would be greatly appreciative if someone could give me a hand. Thank you.

It doesn't as the recovery file is in a different folder, and every time you replace with the modded file, after reboot, the old one is replaced back where it was. The AT&T method does not work for rogers. I understand that at least now haha.

MIUI is tricky. I think to get the latest galnet running, you have to mod and flash the older MIUI first. Jump thru a bunch of pull battery trick before boot up then flash the newer version.
there was some source code issue with xda and muiu link was removed. idk if it was reposted or not.
You may have better luck going back to the muiu dev thread.
otoh, if you wanted Zeus, Bionix, Numas, Victory, you can start with the above.
I don't think rogers or att makes a big different. Same hardware.
as for modded recovery, are you sure are using root explorer correctly?
The simpler method i had luck with is to use adam's heimall oneclick uckj4. then flash a second time with boot loader box checked if you don't already have BL.
then flash the defuse kernel in the second post to give you red recovery. then flash away with rom of choice
edit: if you are already rooted, couldn't you just DL sgskernel flasher from market, and flash gtg's kernel to give you red cwm/voodoo lag fix and then flash the rom of choice? - check out gtg's original post on the pin up.

Look at my later post,
I prefer method is to use adam's heimdall uckj4 one click and follow through all the way until after flashing the defuse kernel to get cwm
if you're soft brick, that will also restore your phone with gb bl.

Looks like you're back to stock. I like heimdall but it looks like Odin is what you're comfortable with.
In this qa section, gtg has a thread up for infused v2 rom. You can start there. Go with cwm installation.
Just make sure you have the roms of your choice already downloaded. Instead of using the infused rom, just flash the one of your choice.

Remember to wipe cache and dalvik cache in the advance setting s of cwm

OK I'm in front of the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my Android life. Turns out I got my Infuse 4G and turn it back to stock AT&T Gingerbread 2.3.6 using Heimdall One-click Back-To-Stock UCLB3, and in the middle of process it seems my USB port disconnected my phone and I though I would see a brick, but thank God it was not that bad (I thought). I change the USB port and put my Infuse in download mode again, passed the tool again and everything went like heaven (again: I thought). I got my stock AT&T Gingerbread 2.3.6, but I never seen CWM anymore, I just can't because the weirdest screen I've ever seen (you'll see).
I thought my phone was unrooted, so I maded my way straight to SuperOneClick v2.3.3 and begin the simplest process. Well... it was unable to root my phone and believe me, it's not ADB problems, I know it because I can install apps through Android Commander without any problem... so that's the first weird thing I have here.
Until that moment I thought my phone was bad-flashed or something, so I tried with another tool, the mythic Odin with h8rift's [UCKD5] Odin - Stock (Root+3e) and with my device in download mode it never shown itself as COM## on Odin (required to start the process), however I clicked on PDA button, selected the .tar.md5 file and start the process that never started (logically).
So right now I have no idea what to do or where to go.
I'm apologize if I explain every little detail, the thing is that most of the time one get answers starting with "You did this?" "Have you tried that?" I all I want is to avoid that. For example, I have USB debugging, ok? Another thing someone could ask.
Please help me guys. I madded a video so you can see what happens when I try to enter CWM. Even when my phone starts, during AT&T logo screen flashes with a strange distortion. I madded this video and post it to YouTube so you can see what is hard for me to explain.
Please HELP!
I need anything that from scratch clean everything and put my phone shiny.
Best regards.
You have "rainbows" because you don't have Gingerbread bootloaders.
You need to use odin a GB leak or Heimdall a GB leak to correct the problem.
Your initial failed flash on heimdall was due to a bad connection -usb data cord or computer usb port.

from froyo with recovery, you can flash any rom. bypassing the bootloader.
a lot of people do this w/o prob until they run into recovery issue.
i'm not sure re: the exact architecture why this occurs.

if you use odin, and install one the gb leaks, you will have that BL, until you do a repartition with gtg's ultimate unbrick which brings you back to froyo. I think you will lose the bl's.
In good practice, I use the 1click heimdall w/ repartition - these are packaged with "official" GB leaks. imho, i believe they are better suited for a base to get to your custom GB rom.
if you're running infused 1.6, there is no needed 'cause it's froyo.
no rainbows there
edit: to each his/her own i guess. the reason why gtg's "unbrick" seems like a life saver is due to repartition with PIT files image.
the heimdall 1 click does the same thing but takes the guess work out from the inexperience user.
OK before anyone blasts me yes I have researched for two days now and feel like I have been run in circles. I have searched XDA and Google to no avail and no I'm not a noob. I myself have a galaxy s2 skyrocket but recently got my wife the infuse and I'm starting to think that was a mistake. OK this is what I've found...
I type in Google how to install CWM recovery on the infuse and every thing I find says it must be rooted first.
Running Android 2.3.6 update thru Samsung kies....
So I type in how to root the infuse and what I find is if you want to root without flashing a new kernal you must have CWM to install a zip file from the SD.
Seems like one big circle. To root my skyrocket was easy as flashing a recovery image in Odin of CWM recovery and opening a super user zip file to root. 5 minutes easy as 1.2.3.
So my questions are..
1. Can I flash a recovery image tar of CWM to the infuse using Odin?
2. If so where can I download the tar file. I already have Odin 1.85 installed on my PC so I don't need that unless the tar comes in a one click.
3. If I can't how can I root and install CWM without flashing a custom kernel?
Please don't give links to nothing heimdel. The last time I used heimdel was with my captivate and I spent 3 days unbricking it.
4. Will the Motorola exploit added in super one click work with Samsung or harm the phone in anyway?
Thanks ahead of time for the help...

But is flashing a new kernel the only option for rooting? If it were my phone I would flash away cause I'm a flashaholic but she don't want to lose all her info and have to restore it all. The only reason she wants root is to freeze those very annoying att bloatware apps that aggravate everyone by running all the time and slowing everything down...

Check with jscott. He may know for certain.
Flashing kernel does not alter data.
I made several root via heimdall versions.
Instead of heimdall, basically, if you can Odin an insecure kernel, boot into cwm recovery, you can flash my cwm root package.
It also remove all bloats. Check my uclb3 root thread especially post #2
And as far as I know, on the infuse uclb3, you can't root without an insecure kernel flash in download mode.
Well it may cost a phone of I may soft brick it a few times but I'm gonna put my programming skills to the test and see if I cant come up with a one click root to 1. Make life easier for everyone and 2. To make it simple for the noobs to figure out. I'll let you know if my java VB and other languages I know can come up with something. It may take me a while and a lot of lost sleep hair pulling cursing and crying but I'm gonna give it my best effort.. wish me luck cause I'm gonna need it...

For now, the normal exploits used for a one click root option don't work on the stock UCLB3 Gingerbread kernel. As qkster has mentioned, you need an insecure kernel to root UCLB3. Also, there isn't an easy way yet to change the stock recovery to CWM without using a custom kernel zImage that includes it. Check out this HOW-TO that I wrote up for an explanation of what it takes to root UCLB3 Gingerbread. This explains how to temporarily use a custom kernel to achieve root, and also explains how to go back to the stock kernel. None of this removes existing data on the phone.:

If you don't want to do all of the work required to root UCLB3 on your phone, then you can use qkster's Heimdall one-click packages or my Odin packages that he showed you earlier.
you can root the infuse with super one click... easiest way to just root it, and also might i add, the infuse is very difficult to hard brick, soft bricks are easy to fix, with odin or hiemdall but i haven't yet heard or seen a case where the infuse is actually hard bricked, now installing cwm is easy as well, just youtube it, very simple and that there should get you on your way to flashing

Assuming that you are talking about going back to stock Froyo to root with SuperOneClick? As of yet, you can't reliably use SuperOneClick on the latest Gingerbread release. Sounds like the OP wants to directly root UCLB3 Gingerbread.

Now, you're talking.
Good luck.
You will need to look at some kernel work.
You may also need to look at the pit files in the unbrick package.
If you can, also look at boot sequences of the galaxy device. Adam Outler did some neat stuff with the galaxy devices.
