Looks like it's just another way of flashing the ROM:

I have never sucessfully got heimdall to recognize the device, with windows or linux, can't say about mac. But I'll be watching this thread And hoping for an answer

I get an error too. Has anyone successfully used Heimdall to install the ICS leak? If so, could you please post your steps?

We need a pit to use it. The only problem is the pit does not exist. If anyone who used the .exe to flash sees a .pit file in the folder, please upload it.

I think your'e supposed to get the PIT off of the phone by using the utility menu in Heimdall.
Then again, it doesn't work for me, so who knows?

Has anyone been able to flash CWM with heimdall. V1.4RC1 will not detect devices on Lnux - Ubuntu 13.04

Bump! I have no idea how to do it and would really like to know.

Heimdall / Odin - which PIT?

Wondering which PIT 512 or 803 to point Heimdall at later when I try to flash CWM.
Don't think you Odin users need it, but Heimdall requires a pit as one of the parameters on the command line.
Any thoughts?

Really? Maybe I've got an old version. Haven't used it in a while since it wasn't necessary with the Nexus S.
Thanks.

Thanks. I suspected a wrong pit could screw things up, hence the question here.
Other says you don't need it, so I'll double check that. Please don't bother with one on my behalf just yet!

I'm very interested in knowing more about it as well. Others have said Heimdall is the safer way vs Odin.

Newer versions of heimdall don't require the PIT file, in fact it pulls the PIT data from the phone rather than requiring you to point to one.
I can't get heimdall to work with my DC on either Mac or PC. Can't get Odin either. Others report success, though. YMMV.
Odin worked initially for me on my MacBook Air running Win7 in Parallels (powered USB hub too). Still trying to get Heimdall to work and on the MAC side.

Cannot get Captivate to boot, tried everything!

Hi guys, I'm pretty good with every phone I use but I've tried everything I could think of to get the GFs Cappy to work. Her phone was pretty slow so I tried to boot into recovery and it was just a black screen. Used Heimdall to flash the zImage listed on the Cyanogen forum. It got CWM on there and from there I could never get back into CWM. Everytime I flash the zImage, it just hangs at the boot screen. Odin doesn't recognize the Captivate, I've installed and uninstalled the drivers and rebooted as well. So I'm at a complete loss as to what to do with this now. Can anyone help? I have searched and poured through all of the guides and things. I'm stuck. Thanks guys!
If you can get into download have you tried plugging the usb into the back of the computer and running odin as administrator? That's what I did.

Tried multiple usb ports, tried as administator, Odin freezes on SetupProcedure. The files I have for stock KF1 are:
CODE_I897UCKF1_CL273832_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Kepler_odin_new_part_JE3_S1JE4.pit
MODEM_I897UCKF1_CL1017518_REV02.tar
SGH-I897-CSC-ATTKF1.tar.md5
I probably can flash them though Heimdall, but I don't know if I need all the files or where the first one goes. I'm really getting sick of trying to fix this phone, so if anyone has more suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Any other suggestions? I'm about to break my laptop and her phone...

That didn't work either. However, it looks like it's going through now. It seems like it was a driver issue and the Captivate drivers weren't working. So in one of the threads, there were other drivers for the GalaxyS and I installed, rebooted, and tried again and it's in the process of flashing. Fingers crossed! Thanks everyone!

Why Cyanogen forum?
And why not Odin........there are so many one click flashes with odin that will get you back to stock state here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843

Heimdall is more reliable and cross platform, so it's usually a better bet. You can also exclude bootloaders when using Heimdall, but not Odin unless you grab a package without bootloaders.

Plus, if you run Heimdall on a Linux system, there are no worries about drivers.

The link I posted has Odin one clicks WITH and WITHOUT bootloaders all the way from JF6 to KJ3, and also CWM packages all in one place. That's my only reason for the Odin question.

[Request] PIT File for 16GB SGH-I727 Re-Partition

Sunday, March 18, 2012
SGH-I727 Owners & XDA Members:
I need to completely repartition, reformat, and reinstall OS on my Skyrocket; but I've only got the radio, OS, and CSC. I still need the PIT file for my phone in order to repartition. Without it, repartitioning will fail and soft-brick my phone. I've searched the forum, and maybe I'm not using the right keywords to search, but I just can't find it. Is there anyone out there who has this file or can point me to it? I would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance!
Thank you,
Ed

[Q] Rooting turned my phone into a "soft Brick"

I have a Samsung S2 Galaxy Skyrocket (SGH-I727) on the AT&T network. I set my phone into download mode, opened Odin3 v.1.85 and selected the .tar file I downloaded off this forum to root the device. Well after about 30 mins of Odin being stuck with the "<ID:0/009> SetupConnection.." prompt I figured it froze up or something. Well I restarted everything and and now my phone just goes straight into Odin mode with the error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I'm trying to reload the .tar and it is still doing the same thing...
I'm a complete noob at this! Will someone please help me out with really simple detailed instructions on how I can get my phone working again? I will do anything in return!!!!

Just so you know, reflashing it will work. Sometimes it takes a few tries. Just make sure repartition is not checked, only reboot. click pda and select the CWM tar. Just make sure the device is recognized in the com port before you push start.

Use odin and flash the sammobile image it will wipe everything but should fix the issue
CM9 Skyrocket
Sometimes its as simple as rebooting your computer, open Odin as admin, select your tar under PDA, connect your phone, make sure com is lit up and flash. My windows machine gets freaky like that sometimes and just fails or sits there doing nothing. Driver issue I assume even though they are there. I've encountered that error a few times trying to flash in Odin. No worries. These guys will get you back up. Good luck!

You mentioned different versions of the OS like ICS and 4.0... Which one do I want? LOL and where do I get it? I'm assuming its different than the firmware correct?

Thats a personal choice. Currently there are many different roms floating around but it depends on what you want.
Deciding on which to get is a matter of 2 simple questions for me: Do you want to be up to date, since ICS is the new hottest, thing (sexier UI IMO, some app issues, but overall feel wise. it makes the phone feel so much better, and fits the sleek profile, but lets not have me go on about aesthetics lol.
Or do you want functionatilty, extra options, overclocking (changing clock speeds) and things like that, currently we can only do that on 2.3.5/6 (Gingerbread, also known as GB)
I personally like ICS. Sometimes the Skyrocket just has to be sexy than the powerhouse e-beast that it is. That will happen whenever the Official ICS comes out

You don't need the sammobile tar unless you're returning to stock. If you wanna just be stock rooted, flash CWM in odin. Make a nandroid backup. Then put the superuser zip on the sd card and flash it in CWM.
If you wanna run a custom rom from our dev section, just flash CWM, make a backup and then flash the rom which will already be rooted

As far as I can tell heimdall does not yet support the s3 and the website seems pretty dead.
I had to borrow my stepson pc to load a rooted stock rom via ODIN. Once you have that you can use dd to load a custom recovery, plus mobile ODIN is now available.

wow, that stinks. is there a way to fix that?
I use a macbook and had issues with rooting using heimdall. I think your best and easiest option is to borrow a friend's computer with windows and just root with that - since you'll be doing most things from recovery you most likely wont need access to windows again.
if i unroot, will i need a windows computer?
