Request: Verizon Root Guide for Heimdall - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

If anyone has successfully rooted their Verizon S3 with Heimdall, could you please append your instructions to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885 Or include them here? Some of us don't have access to Windows for Odin and it would be much appreciated! My attempts haven't been successful, but I don't have any experience with Heimdall unfortunately.

As far as I can tell heimdall does not yet support the s3 and the website seems pretty dead.
I had to borrow my stepson pc to load a rooted stock rom via ODIN. Once you have that you can use dd to load a custom recovery, plus mobile ODIN is now available.

OH THANK GOD!!! I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why I just can't seem to flash using heimdall on my Mac. I can't even get it to work using windows and Odin in VirtualBox. Hopefully this will get sorted soon.

Thankfully not. I was able to use a VM and Odin to use it, but I just feel dirty using Windows.

You should feel dirty connecting a android and apple device together.

I want to root, but now i have 4.1.1, stock.

Stuck halfway
I used casual r131 and I did fine on 4.0.4 but got a new phone with JB on it. Attempted to use casual. Phone is in half root lol. shows the custom unlock image but no su... I'm like stuck in the middle. Of course I have the dang VZW version of S3...

wow, that stinks. is there a way to fix that?

I use a macbook and had issues with rooting using heimdall. I think your best and easiest option is to borrow a friend's computer with windows and just root with that - since you'll be doing most things from recovery you most likely wont need access to windows again.

if i unroot, will i need a windows computer?

Cannot get Captivate to boot, tried everything!

Hi guys, I'm pretty good with every phone I use but I've tried everything I could think of to get the GFs Cappy to work. Her phone was pretty slow so I tried to boot into recovery and it was just a black screen. Used Heimdall to flash the zImage listed on the Cyanogen forum. It got CWM on there and from there I could never get back into CWM. Everytime I flash the zImage, it just hangs at the boot screen. Odin doesn't recognize the Captivate, I've installed and uninstalled the drivers and rebooted as well. So I'm at a complete loss as to what to do with this now. Can anyone help? I have searched and poured through all of the guides and things. I'm stuck. Thanks guys!
If you can get into download have you tried plugging the usb into the back of the computer and running odin as administrator? That's what I did.

Tried multiple usb ports, tried as administator, Odin freezes on SetupProcedure. The files I have for stock KF1 are:
CODE_I897UCKF1_CL273832_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Kepler_odin_new_part_JE3_S1JE4.pit
MODEM_I897UCKF1_CL1017518_REV02.tar
SGH-I897-CSC-ATTKF1.tar.md5
I probably can flash them though Heimdall, but I don't know if I need all the files or where the first one goes. I'm really getting sick of trying to fix this phone, so if anyone has more suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Any other suggestions? I'm about to break my laptop and her phone...

That didn't work either. However, it looks like it's going through now. It seems like it was a driver issue and the Captivate drivers weren't working. So in one of the threads, there were other drivers for the GalaxyS and I installed, rebooted, and tried again and it's in the process of flashing. Fingers crossed! Thanks everyone!

Why Cyanogen forum?
And why not Odin........there are so many one click flashes with odin that will get you back to stock state here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843

Heimdall is more reliable and cross platform, so it's usually a better bet. You can also exclude bootloaders when using Heimdall, but not Odin unless you grab a package without bootloaders.

Plus, if you run Heimdall on a Linux system, there are no worries about drivers.

The link I posted has Odin one clicks WITH and WITHOUT bootloaders all the way from JF6 to KJ3, and also CWM packages all in one place. That's my only reason for the Odin question.

Issues in flashing back to stock

I am having an issue with odin 1.85. Two days ago I had flashed my Skyrocket to the leaked ICS. I had done so by using the one-click method. The flash worked out great but now I am tring to flash back to stock. I am doing this because I did not do my research enough and found a better flash to use.
When I plug the phone into the computer it is reconized and all the drivers are installed. Odin sees my phone and the correct port it is connected to. I have clicked PDA and picked the stock rom like I am suppose to. After I put the phone in download mode I plug it in and wait for odin to reconize it. Everything is working the correct way up until odin tries to flash. I keep getting the " Can't open serial (COM) port" error.
I am not new to modding phones. I have done this for many years I just have not ever posed here. So before I get the usual responses, I have uninstall and reinstalled all the USB drivers, Kies, changed USB ports, and had downloaded Odin 1.84 & 1.85. None of these common fixes help. I have also made sure that Kies is not running while I am tring to flash.
Any help would be great. Thank you ahead of time.
When you open Odin, are you right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator"? If not, doing this might help.
I've had this happen but I found that it usually works after a few attempts if it fails at first. Or, another common solution that you didn't mention is trying to do it from a different computer.
Also, which stock tar are you flashing? There are a few versions out there.
The best one to use is found at http://www.sammobile.com (open an account if you haven't already and search for the i727 firmware).
When I've had trouble with Odin I've found sometimes that using a previous version will help resolve the problem. If you have kies uninstall it. The drivers will stick

Just to reiterate, you do NOT want to use that tar. It is not stock and it will trip your flash counter. Use the one from sammobile.

I think the problem was the laptop. I am not sure why. It doesn't have bluetooth or anything odd that would be using the com ports. Its a Toshiba if you guys see anyone else with the same problem tell them to switch laptops.

[Q] Root in Linux?

Hi gang.
I recently ditched my Windows partition since I never use Windows anymore. I also went back to stock. It has been fine but I realized I want root for a few things.
My question is, is there a way to root 2.3.6 on Linux? Heimdall doesn't seem to be able to communicate with my device. Can't even grab a PIT. Obviously, not having Windows means no ODIN. And the one rooting method that did have a Linux script (zergrush over adb) didn't work.
I hope I'm missing something easy! If not I'm kinda hosed. I can't use ODIN to revert to 2.3.5 and I have no way of getting CWM on there.

Good thought. I tried it, and unfortunately after running zergRush I could not remount. This leads me to believe that zergRush doesn't work on 2.3.6 on our phone. Any other suggestions? I wish Heimdall+cwm would work. That's so easy! :-/
Oh well. I guess I'll bring my USB cable to another computer.

[Q] Recovery loop

Hello everyone and sorry to bother everyone but im in a pickle. Im new to rooting and I was following this on YouTube by qbking77 called "How to Install Clockworkmod Recovery on the Samsung Infuse 4G " video.
So what my problem is that when i placed the modified 3e recovery file in the bin folder and tried to restart my Samsung infuse 4g through the clockworkmod recovery restart it will now only boot to the Samsung screen. I believe I may have somehow placed the wrong or a corrupted 3e recovery file into the directory.
I have searched many other forums to no avail if anyone could help i would be eternally grateful.
Check the super everything thread for either a heimdall or Odin return to stock package. Download and run them with the phone in download mode. You can even get packages with CWM preinstalled.

Thank you very much for the advice! I'm trying heimdall right now but the zadiag is not recognizing my infuse. I have connected and in download mode but when going under list all device there is no Samsung.
I have been trying odin instead and I am running into the same error. I have installed drivers through kies mini but odin will not recognize the device either.

I had no luck with Odin either. Check your windows device manager and see what shows up when you plug the phone in. It doesn't always show as Samsung, but something should come up that you can use to install drivers. Best of luck getting things back to running

[Q] [SOLVED] How do I get Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" (GT-P3113) out of recovery mode?
This may seem like a stupid question but here's what I'm dealing with. I had flashed CWM v6.0.2.3 onto my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7" Wi-Fi) model and now when the tablet boots up, it automatically goes into the recovery mode and does not boot up like it normally did. I want to get back to where I can boot this up normally so I can use the tablet again. Anyone have any ideas that may help me out on this?

Heimdall does require I pit file and you have to decompress the tar file first. Odin should be fine. Go to sammobile's firmware page and download stock for your tab. Use Odin to flash stock and then use Odin to flash the latest @Android-Andi TWRP. This SHOULD get your tab working again.
