[Q] Root in Linux? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi gang.
I recently ditched my Windows partition since I never use Windows anymore. I also went back to stock. It has been fine but I realized I want root for a few things.
My question is, is there a way to root 2.3.6 on Linux? Heimdall doesn't seem to be able to communicate with my device. Can't even grab a PIT. Obviously, not having Windows means no ODIN. And the one rooting method that did have a Linux script (zergrush over adb) didn't work.
I hope I'm missing something easy! If not I'm kinda hosed. I can't use ODIN to revert to 2.3.5 and I have no way of getting CWM on there.

Just throwing an idea out there. I have not tried it so wait till a more experienced person confirms. I may be talking nonsense!! I don't want you to have a paperweight
Is it possible using adb to manually carry out all the steps in the updater script inside the superuser zip?

Good thought. I tried it, and unfortunately after running zergRush I could not remount. This leads me to believe that zergRush doesn't work on 2.3.6 on our phone. Any other suggestions? I wish Heimdall+cwm would work. That's so easy! :-/

Oh well. I guess I'll bring my USB cable to another computer.

[HELP] Stuck in boot loop after modding framework-res.apk

Looks like my worst fears came true. I applied a Metamorph that was supposed to be compatible with all froyo based HDPI Devices, but I guess that wasn't true. It worked at first then I applied another mod from the same thread, then **** hit the fan.
Now my g2x is stuck in a boot loop. I have a stock recovery, and I'm on a mac to make things worse. Please help.

Brings me to the recovery (Open box with a green android), then it just continues looping the startup screen.
Can someone please help, my g2x is a paper weight right now
Pull the system dump from the development section. Push the framework-res file via adb while the phone is boot looping or while in cwm if that works.
You should always have a nandroid backup before modifying system files. If you have one, just restore /system.
The first option is the easiest.

I can't figure out how to pull the framework-apk from the system dump. When I type in ./adb devices into terminal, none come up. This is while the boot screen is looping and while it's in stock recovery. I don't have cwm installed
Go to the development section and download the dump in the post labeled T-Mobile g2x dump. Unzip him. After it's unzipped, find /system/framework/framework-res.apk. That's the original file. You news to replace that one with your modified one. Adb is an easy way to do that.
If you're rooted, you should be able to adb push that file to overwrite the modified one. If its not working, you may need to enable read+write on system.
I haven't rooted yet since this is a trial device, so I can't give you a step by step. And I'm typing this on the phone. :-/

There are cwm instructions for Mac + Linux (thats what it looks like you're on based on your post). Try installing that to get adb working.

First of all, I understand that you're worried about your phone, but don't get mad at us when we didn't do anything and we are, in fact, trying to help. Second, in order to fix your phone using your own computer, you're probably going to have to install a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu. I don't think anyone has found a way to use nvflash on a Mac thus far. Installing Ubuntu is fairly easy and wouldn't take long.
Check out this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/M...telInstallation#Dual-Boot: Mac OSX and Ubuntu

If you can borrow a friend's windows PC, install the LG desktop app. It has a recovery option (assuming it can still communicate with the phone). That's probably the fastest way to get back to stock.

[Q] How to root TB on version 1.13.605.7?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I updated my phone to the latest OTA fw that was just released by VZ, Software version says 1.13.605.7 and kernel is 2.6.32.21-gb05544a [email protected] #1 (whatever that is)
Andriod version is at 2.2.1 and I would love to be able to root my phone and install one of the gingerbread ROMs but have not seen any ways to do this...... please advise. Thanks!
Search here or Google it. Instructions everywhere. One piece of advice: stay away from the "one click" method. The best way isn't as easy if you are new, but read up and you'll learn.

Yea I've been searching and all I've found is for the previous software version, not the new OTA version....
I used to have a droid inc and it was super easy to root... without the need for ADB. It just seems like a PITA to setup ADB and risk bricking the phone... and I'm on win7 x64 to further complicate things. I'm not new to this but I just want to find a simple way to load a different ROM on my phone to get rid of the bloatware and to help save battery life.
Using adb is actually quite easy. And the whole process is less than an hour. I know its usually Google but this time youtube is your friend. Just look up how to set up adb and then you are just some copy and pastes away from a rooted thunderbolt.
As far as trying to root the new version, just backup and downgrade since the process wipes data anyway.

I'm on x64 win7 too. Just download HTC sync, install the drivers with it and quit the install before you install the app (drivers install first, then you are prompted to install sync). No easy button with this phone IMO, but if you take the time, its worth it. No risk on bricking it if you've done it before. Just cut and paste the commands and go slow. No unrevoked for this baby yet.

Well the phone never showed up in the device list in the GUI - it would only show up in the command line... I had to install the correct USB driver and rebooted several times... And be sure the phone is in charge only mode instead of disk drive mode... and make sure there are no devices that dont have the drivers installed in device manager.. After all that, i was able to follow the step by step guide linked above. Which took a while and there are many steps so be careful! when you do the "dd" command thats where you can really brick your phone. Good luck!

[Q] List of Heimdall-compatible Firmware Packages for SGS4G?

I have to use Heimdall if I'm to flash my phone. At home I only have access to Mac. I used a PC at work to root my phone (superoneclick was waaay easy), but I don't want to push my luck with IT and my boss at work.
Is there a list of Heimdall packages for the SGS4G anywhere? I've been searching and can't find them anywhere. Maybe Heimdall 1.3 is too new??
I am hoping to use Audiophile because it just chaps my a$$ that I can't play a stock music player (TMOUS) without it skipping out (paucity of cpu cycles I imagine). I very much appreciate the post RaverX3X put up about Audiophile recently. However he focused on Odin and I can't use Odin.
Any ideas anyone?
No one has made any firmware packages for it.
You'd only use Heimdall for flashing a stock rom base with a custom kernel and then you'd have to flash audiophile through CWM anyway.
I'd make a firmware package for you if I wasn't on my way out soon though. Maybe if no one else has done it when I get back I'll set something up for you.
Alright I made the heimdall package for you, I haven't tested it though, so proceed at your own risk.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tea..._kh2_with_kg4_kernel_heimdall.tar.gz/download
Did it work? I want to know so I can post it on the original thread.
You gave some qualifications about using CWM before putting up the Heimdall package. Since this is my first time flashing and I only have my SGS4G so I am going slowly. I got CWM installed and backed up. I downloaded your file and have it on my Mac. Before I try to use, I want to be sure I know what I'm doing. So I'm reading a lot of XDA first.
You will be the second to know I got it installed and working (with me being the first obviously. )
Thanks for the help.
You actually don't need CWM at all. You'll wind up with CWM after flashing this.
Okay, I'll give this one a try. In a previous message you said that after using Heimdall, I still need to flash Audiophile using CWM. Is that still true? Is there any other software I need to flash with CWM?
You might need to flash my busybox_installer.zip but I think Raver may have included that in the audiophile ftw installer.
Well I tried but Heimdall could never see my phone. I can connect USB storage using the phone, but Heimdall can't detect the device at all.
I've searched XDA trying to find MAC drivers for the phone that might be better than mine, but I've not found anything yet.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Scroll down and find the OSX version (Heimdall suite 1.3.0). It comes with Codeless kext (aka driver). It should install libusb for you.
Hmmm, I installed that package. I do not know why kext didn't work. I know I have a system reboot since then.
Maybe I'll uninstall and try to re-install.
Thanks A Lot

Awesome, I'm glad it worked for you. I'll be making the Froyo portion of the heimdall package available soon in order to update my GB Starter Pack guide for mac/linux.
How straightforward was the install by the way? I'm still trying to get feedback from users.
I am very happy heimdall is working for you and you got the ROM flashed.
Very frustrated that I can't get heimdall to see my phone. I have CWM installed and I have the RootExplorer app working and I can see my SD card as a USB drive on my Mac. Is it possible to flash with just those three tools?
All the guides I see seem to focus on Odin or Heimdall. Do they do some magic that I can't accomplish on my own?

Sadly there's no safe way to flash bootloaders using CWM, which is the only reason we're using Odin/Heimdall. I can't diagnose the problems on a mac since I don't own one, but have you tried removing heimdall, restarting, reinstalling, restarting and trying again? Might make it work.

Root Problem SuperOneClick

Hello,
I've got a Skyrocket i727 and am stuck on the psneuter part when trying to root. I'm sorry for posting here since I'm sure the answers lie somewhere, but I've been researching since yesterday and haven't found it. I'm on a satellite internet connection that is pretttty slow.
Anyways, so I have the drivers installed, and then run SuperOneClick as Admin on windows 7. I click root and it runs until psneuter then appears to be stuck. It freezes there. When I close the black command screen that has opened it suggests I turn off debugging mode. When I try to close debugging mode it just stays at Waiting for Device...
So, what am I missing?
Thanks so much in advance.

Has anybody been successful? The previous way using one click only works on 2.3.5. Using heimdall is unsuccessful. Im unable to flash cwm recovery using rom manager. All I have is my imac and I'd rather not have to install Odin and files and somebody else's PC. Any help?
I own both a pc and mac but I rooted mine on 2.3.5 using zerg rush and its rooted ever since. I can't be that helpful but you could always use parallels or VMfusion or even bootcamp to install windows on your mac just for the root.
It's not our model but you can check this as a guideline http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU-fm6FOyKo
AFAIK, you have to flash CWM and use it to flash Superuser to root any version of Android higher than 2.3.5, but to do that you need Odin, which only works on Windows.
If Heimdall worked with SR we could use that to flash CWM but it doesn't. I had the same problem on Linux. Good luck!

My buddy recently rooted his phone using VMware Workstation 8. If you're going to go that route, just make sure you attach the USB device to the VM, and disconnect it properly before shutting down the system. Overall it was a fairly painless process. And if memory serves me correctly Workstation has a free 30 day trial.
Solution: rid the mac.

Yea there is nothing for Mac as of yet. I tried heimdall also. Had a connection error and also couldn't find the tar with the .XML file in it. So boot camp virtual box or borrowing a windows computer. Something like that is your only option. I will say its a quick root. Took me less then 30 seconds.
