[Q] How to root TB on version 1.13.605.7? - Thunderbolt General

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I updated my phone to the latest OTA fw that was just released by VZ, Software version says 1.13.605.7 and kernel is 2.6.32.21-gb05544a [email protected] #1 (whatever that is)
Andriod version is at 2.2.1 and I would love to be able to root my phone and install one of the gingerbread ROMs but have not seen any ways to do this...... please advise. Thanks!

Search here or Google it. Instructions everywhere. One piece of advice: stay away from the "one click" method. The best way isn't as easy if you are new, but read up and you'll learn.

Yea I've been searching and all I've found is for the previous software version, not the new OTA version....
I used to have a droid inc and it was super easy to root... without the need for ADB. It just seems like a PITA to setup ADB and risk bricking the phone... and I'm on win7 x64 to further complicate things. I'm not new to this but I just want to find a simple way to load a different ROM on my phone to get rid of the bloatware and to help save battery life.

Using adb is actually quite easy. And the whole process is less than an hour. I know its usually Google but this time youtube is your friend. Just look up how to set up adb and then you are just some copy and pastes away from a rooted thunderbolt.
As far as trying to root the new version, just backup and downgrade since the process wipes data anyway.

I'm on x64 win7 too. Just download HTC sync, install the drivers with it and quit the install before you install the app (drivers install first, then you are prompted to install sync). No easy button with this phone IMO, but if you take the time, its worth it. No risk on bricking it if you've done it before. Just cut and paste the commands and go slow. No unrevoked for this baby yet.

So after applying the MR2, is there a way to root it and setup a gingerbread ROM? Obviously I'd have to root first...

If you follow the thread and do it line by line plainjane will be installed which is rooted debate stock on mr2. From there you can flash any gb rom

Well the phone never showed up in the device list in the GUI - it would only show up in the command line... I had to install the correct USB driver and rebooted several times... And be sure the phone is in charge only mode instead of disk drive mode... and make sure there are no devices that dont have the drivers installed in device manager.. After all that, i was able to follow the step by step guide linked above. Which took a while and there are many steps so be careful! when you do the "dd" command thats where you can really brick your phone. Good luck!
What problem are you having exactly?

before you did the OTA where you already rooted?
did you end up getting it rooted?
- i found this thread a little bit ago its for rooted
users only and they have already rooted, deodexed
the new 1.70.605 mr2 update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160374
is this a different version than the one you were
trying to get rooted?

No i wasn't rooted b4 the OTA update... after i was rooted i updated to the MR2.5 baseband update and now my baseband version is 1.39.00.0528w, 0.01.69.0602w_1 (not sure what that 2nd part is)
Build # is 2.01.605.0
I'm running gingerth3ory 4.5.1 now and it works great....
what part are you stuck with? You cant get it to show up in ADB?

[TIP] Running the RUU to get back to stock

I ran into a few problems getting back to stock until I remembered a minor detail from my HTC Hero days.
You need to download and install HTC Sync get it here install it.
Reboot your computer
make sure the phone is NOT in USB debug mode and is in charge only mode.
the proper drivers will install. you'll know it's done right if you see ADB pop up as one of the drivers installed. You'll see a warning that HTC sync isn't detecting your phone and that's ok.
Then run the RUU exe all should work fine.
Get the RUU exe from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224 This is FROYO
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191959 This one is Gingerbread
Didn't realize debugging had to be disabled.

Good sir I can not thank you enough for helping me get my phone back. i don't even mind all the bloatware now. Too bad I can't use the thanks button more than once. I really appreciate it.
Happy to be of service. I can't dev my way out of a paper bag, well I've never tried, but I can share what I do know.
I tried to run the RUU but it failed twice. Both times it would get about 70% finished and it would stop with an Error 110 which says that a file is either open or corrupted. Then it tells you to download the RUU again and run it again, which I did but got the same results. I downloaded it with the anti virus and firewall turned off. Is there another site to download the file from?

Either flash a different rom via Clockwork Mod or run the RUU. If you choose the RUU, be sure HTC Sync is installed, USB Debugging is checked and Fastboot is unchecked.
Thank you! It works!
Just used this thread to get my Inspire back to stock before taking it back for a refund and cancelling service. Decided to go with the HTC Evo3d from Sprint. This method worked returning the phone back to the latest (Gingerbread) and unrooted it from Cyanogen (CM7) ROM. Thanks a ton for sharing your wisdom!

Hey, I have a question. When running this RUU update (downgrade) it gives me this: Error 140: Bootloader version error. Its agravating. I'd love to go back to froyo... I really can't use GB because it blocks tethering. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I take it you're not S-OFF? HTC (and probably others) decided they didn't want users reverting to older versions. You'll have to root, get S-OFF, before you can revert, but if you're rooted, you might as well just use the new andTether from google code:

Just found out at Best Buy that my phone is crap. The memory is out and I have no apps installed, my HD card is empty except for the standard stuff, and I get error that I need to free up memory or something like that. Guy told me to UNroot my phone and call AT&T.
So, this thread is all I need to do that???? Can it really be this easy????
thanks so much,

Hahaa nice i was same place as you where... I had Fuze and then Touch pro2 running energy roms... Well man you could try an older version of super obe click but.. The new one never gave me trouble.
And if as you say, you want to root to possibly flash a GB ron later the possibukity of Odin flashing a pre rooted Rom its still a good choice if super one click keeps giving you trouble, it will basicly leave your stuff like pics music etc intact and flash a rom with root included ill add you a few thread links when i get to my pc.

I do have a question tho. Your links are for ultimate unbrick, right? So basically that is a staock rom for users to flash back to if they go too far down the rabbit hole?

Rooting Tb after 07/08 OTA!!

I tried to root my Thunderbolt yesturday (I installed the 07/08 OTA from verizon when it became available on 07/08). I have followed the steps to the T, and have been unable to root my phone.
Is anyone else having this problem?
I used the following guide: [RS Guide] How to Root Your Thunderbolt
Here are a few things I noticed:
Wen I type "adb devices" I get the following message:
adb server is out of date. Killing...
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
HT12GS001525 device
Is this a normal message?
Second, One I go through all the copy & paste into the cmd window, my TB goes through all the checking of the PG05IMG.zip, and I get error messages about no img found and whatnot... I never get the message "Do you want to start update?" I have to hit reboot from the bootloader, and then my TB reboots and I get no changes to my phone.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to make sure that on your SD Card, the PG05IMG file does not have ".zip" at the end of the name. If it does, your phone reads it as "PG05IMG.zip.zip"
Take the .zip off the name and it should work.
The message from ADB that you got is normal and means that your phone is being read correctly and communicating with your computer.
Also, you use the volume up button (not the power button) to confirm the radio update.

Edit: Got it sorted out.
I am in San Diego and am getting the update now. The update appears to be OTA v. 1.70.605.0
If you do not want to update to this OTA version all you need to do is interrupt the update and do a refresh check update, once it prompt you to update you will have the option to reject or defer.
I am going to see how this OTA plays out and will consider rooting in the coming days.
Link please?

I'm updated to GB and can't revert. I think I know the answer to this because I've been watching superoneclick like a hawk waiting for version 2.0 but no sign yet. I just was wondering tho, if there was some serious forceful way to wipe my g2x and flash stock rom thru nvflash?

I too am waiting for a way to root the update. I don't like flashing roms that are not from official sources (lg, T Mobile) not that there is any thing wrong with other roms I just prefer official stock rooted with my own tweaks. Hopefully soon one of the great developers here can figure it out

NVFlash isn't bothered by updates of any kind, so if you've lost custom recovery just re-flash

you can't revert to what? and why can't you? who or what is stopping you? you don't flash roms through nvflash. just recoveries. i know the o2x can flash roms with nvflash, but i'm not sure about g2x. correct me if i'm wrong.

I too am waiting for a way to root the update. I don't like flashing roms that are not from official sources (lg, T Mobile) not that there is any thing wrong with other roms I just prefer official stock rooted with my own tweaks. Hopefully soon one of the great developers here can figure it out

I myself tried the Eaglesblood 1.05 on top of the update and its fantastic.

just reflash clockwork mod with the one click flash app. then flash any rom you want.
Ok, if you have not been able to figure out how to do it with all of the posts written here, all of the stickies, all of the replies to your pleadings, then PLEASE...don't root. Keep your phone just as it is, or have T-mobile replace it with a stock version, as you don't appear to have the capacity to successfully mod a cellphone. I"m sorry to be harsh, but seriously...pick a different hobby.

after doing this stuff for years, and pc tech support online as well, i don't think i'd be cut out for phone tech support. eventually i think i'd just snap and flip out on someone. i try my best to be patient and helpful. but it just drives me nuts having spent YEARS reading and experimenting, only to see others wanting to be spoonfed(not intended towards anyone in particular). looks like you're in the same boat? lol

thank you for your condescending advise. i hope one of the xda mods makes you xda police. and i hope the baby your wife is expecting is born healthy and energetic.
to reiterate i cannot flash anything thru nvflash(clockwork nor stock froyo) and i cannot root with superoneclick. i updated by using a KDZ_FW_UPD.exe app that was linked in these very forums. this app apparently is translated from korean. i was not able to flash the new .kdz version by normal means--i had to go into the submenu "read phone information" and click "upgrade start" there...that installed gingerbread and unrooted me.
rather than evoke more eager and stoic xda members' attempt to distinguish themselves as intelligent comprehending human beings i simply instead wish for my thread to by deleted lest this be another blight on our holy xda forums g2x section where from nothing but the best forums posts stems from. because we could probably use another "what do you think guys? should i trade back my sensation for the g2x i once owned already now that gingerbread::drooool:: is finally out because i didnt know there already were gingerbread roms out there and instead i just had to tell the whole world "goodbye lg, never again, cry river?""
i am still on my first g2x and have never called tmobile complaining about screen bleed or anything else that seems to be only perpetuated by retarded threads in this g2x general forum that i sift thru on a DAILY basis while trying to find useful information and possible help out someone with advise from my own experience in similar situations

1.-to reiterate i cannot flash anything thru nvflash(clockwork nor stock froyo)..
.stock froyo is flashed through cwm, not nvflash. why cant you update? be more specific. error messages?
2-.i had to go into the submenu "read phone information" and click "upgrade start" there...that installed gingerbread and unrooted me.
i updated the same way, then flashed back to cwm. nvflash gave me issues, although it always worked before, but one click flasher app flashed it fine.

i am holding the volume up and down buttons just as the instructions says and just as i did when i originally rooted back when my phone was running stock froyo 2.2, back before i updated my phone to gingerbread and the new baseband. but i just get the message that there is no communication with my device
Check device manager and see if your phone is detected there. You may need to reinstall the drivers

uninstall all lg drivers. reboot. reinstall drivers http://www.lg.com/us/support/mc-support/drivers/LG_T-Mobile_Android_USB_Driver_v2.2.zip
@Daffydukc, I had the same issue. The good news is that since you already updated using the LG tool, you have the newer baseband. Right now, the "hard part" is getting CMW through NV flash back, which will let you flash whatever rom you want. I suggest the pre-rooted version of the same gingerbread update from xboarder56 over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
For now, try what crazythunder suggested and uninstall the LG drivers that the LG update tool might have deposited on your system and reinstall the drivers that worked prior to your update. Take out the battery, hold down vol up AND vol down, plug in the usb cable and see if your computer see's your phone. If it doesn't work, try again (it didn't work for me the 1st time either)
I'm now rooted with new baseband and liking it so far, goodluck.
THANK YOU!
great advise with the uninstall and then re install lg drivers i had not considered lg update tools overwriting the drivers that allow flashing CWM with drivers that arent really conducive to flashing CWM. i did that, and i read somewhere a suggestion to press the power button as well as the volume buttons.
i cant tell which of these two things was what did it for me but i'm so grateful for the help. i was sure to hit the thanks button for you guys!!

Super one click no longer works on the G2X GB rom. The exploit was patched. Google purposely left the exploit in the Nexus One GB rom since it is a developer phone and they expect it to be rooted. Right now the only way is to flash CWM recovery with NVFlash and then install a pre-rooted rom.
I've been lurking for a while, and I saw others complaining about the camera after updating. Is there a pre-rooted rom with the LG camera on it, and where would I find it?
did u install the adb drivers also?

I rooted my g2x 2 days ago and I didn't have to install any roms. Just stock 2.3.3. rooted now. Then again, I'm a noob at this though. I installed your zip file and skipped all the command prompt stuff. I don't know what I could have messed up but I couldn't post of the dev forum because I'm a noob still.
I am totally lost. I rooted 2.2 and ran with Weapon. But now I have new g2x and cant handle the rooting process. Read everything I can and still I can't figure it out. I am going nuts with stock. It keeps eating by batter up. Help!!!!!!! I need it spoon fed.

All you have to do is install Clockworkmod with the One-Click Flasher (search for it) and then install my root zip in Clockworkmod (search for it also). It is very easy and simple to do.
Just follow this guide to get your 2.3 Gingerbread rooted and with a custom ROM.

I beg to differ. Ever since I got my 2.3.3 preloaded G2x from T-mobile, my computer does not even recognize a new APX device was connected. I've ran the procedure following step by step to the T several times, and it never pops any "S/W Upgrade" on my phone's screen anymore and does not show windows finding any new APX device. Can someone please tell me how I can make windows force install the APX driver without recognizing that the device is there? Is that even possible?
Use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13330067 to get
coachwork mod recovery, then just
Flash a rooted custom rom or if you wanna keep stock rom just dl and flash the g2x root zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17398464
Good luck hope this helps..
