Wondering which PIT 512 or 803 to point Heimdall at later when I try to flash CWM.
Don't think you Odin users need it, but Heimdall requires a pit as one of the parameters on the command line.
Any thoughts?

Really? Maybe I've got an old version. Haven't used it in a while since it wasn't necessary with the Nexus S.
Thanks.

Thanks. I suspected a wrong pit could screw things up, hence the question here.
Other says you don't need it, so I'll double check that. Please don't bother with one on my behalf just yet!

I'm very interested in knowing more about it as well. Others have said Heimdall is the safer way vs Odin.

Newer versions of heimdall don't require the PIT file, in fact it pulls the PIT data from the phone rather than requiring you to point to one.
I can't get heimdall to work with my DC on either Mac or PC. Can't get Odin either. Others report success, though. YMMV.
Odin worked initially for me on my MacBook Air running Win7 in Parallels (powered USB hub too). Still trying to get Heimdall to work and on the MAC side.

Does anyone happen to have the correct boot.bin and sbl.bin for the Galaxy S 4G? I'd love to have them if so and I know some of the DEV's here most likely have an ODIN package with them. I promise I would search for them but we all know that it's impossible to know what's in the ODIN package without downloading then looking inside it, or someone stating what's in it. I'm looking for good files to flash after JTAG sessions on the Galaxy S 4G.
Thanks!
this is from KC1, but should still work.

Wow this may be a huge help. Ok I've seen it said both ways but do you have a T959V pit? I'm going to be using heimdall and would like to use these but as you probably know the pit is required to repartition. I'm working with a T959V that I jtagged back to life but had previously been flashed with T959 firmware and surprisingly that has the partitioning all haywire.
Ok I confirmed that those are the correct boot.bin and sbl.bin files. Now I think if I could get a hold of a decent pit file I may could get this up and running.
the only one I have is a bad on. LOL
BUT, I know there is a way to make one from the phone. I'll have to look to see how the SK4G guys did it.
They are probably just dumping the bml partition that stores the pit. Thanks for the info though so far!
Alrighty I successfully produced my own PIT file and hex edited to ensure it was about the same as a typical one as there is a lot of extra gobble that must be removed with a hex editor from the dump file. I loaded it up into ODIN and flashed some old KC1 firmware and bam! Back up and running with correct partitioning!
Do you think you could make us a working .pit from it?

Said and done. It worked beautifully on the customer's SGS4G that I hard de-bricked and should for any DEV or enthusiast if needed. Remember, there is no need to use a PIT file unless you are having partitioning problems.

SGH-I727 Owners & XDA Members:
I need to completely repartition, reformat, and reinstall OS on my Skyrocket; but I've only got the radio, OS, and CSC. I still need the PIT file for my phone in order to repartition. Without it, repartitioning will fail and soft-brick my phone. I've searched the forum, and maybe I'm not using the right keywords to search, but I just can't find it. Is there anyone out there who has this file or can point me to it? I would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance!
Thank you,
Ed

Honestly I think we have yet to see a pit file for our skyrocket. I can't get heimdall to work on my windows or my linux machine. I mean it works but doesn't recognize my phone. If you know a trick to make it work ide pull the pit for ya. I wonder if there is a way to do it with adb?

I get an error too. Has anyone successfully used Heimdall to install the ICS leak? If so, could you please post your steps?
We need a pit to use it. The only problem is the pit does not exist. If anyone who used the .exe to flash sees a .pit file in the folder, please upload it.

I think your'e supposed to get the PIT off of the phone by using the utility menu in Heimdall.
Then again, it doesn't work for me, so who knows?
Has anyone been able to flash CWM with heimdall. V1.4RC1 will not detect devices on Lnux - Ubuntu 13.04

I am having an issue with odin 1.85. Two days ago I had flashed my Skyrocket to the leaked ICS. I had done so by using the one-click method. The flash worked out great but now I am tring to flash back to stock. I am doing this because I did not do my research enough and found a better flash to use.
When I plug the phone into the computer it is reconized and all the drivers are installed. Odin sees my phone and the correct port it is connected to. I have clicked PDA and picked the stock rom like I am suppose to. After I put the phone in download mode I plug it in and wait for odin to reconize it. Everything is working the correct way up until odin tries to flash. I keep getting the " Can't open serial (COM) port" error.
I am not new to modding phones. I have done this for many years I just have not ever posed here. So before I get the usual responses, I have uninstall and reinstalled all the USB drivers, Kies, changed USB ports, and had downloaded Odin 1.84 & 1.85. None of these common fixes help. I have also made sure that Kies is not running while I am tring to flash.
Any help would be great. Thank you ahead of time.
When you open Odin, are you right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator"? If not, doing this might help.
I've had this happen but I found that it usually works after a few attempts if it fails at first. Or, another common solution that you didn't mention is trying to do it from a different computer.
Also, which stock tar are you flashing? There are a few versions out there.
The best one to use is found at http://www.sammobile.com (open an account if you haven't already and search for the i727 firmware).
When I've had trouble with Odin I've found sometimes that using a previous version will help resolve the problem. If you have kies uninstall it. The drivers will stick

Just to reiterate, you do NOT want to use that tar. It is not stock and it will trip your flash counter. Use the one from sammobile.

So I finally got home and used my other laptop. Everything worked great! I used the firmware from Sammobile but it still tripped my counter. Not a big deal but it did for whatever reason. I think the problem was the laptop. I am not sure why. It doesn't have bluetooth or anything odd that would be using the com ports. Its a Toshiba if you guys see anyone else with the same problem tell them to switch laptops.

If anyone has successfully rooted their Verizon S3 with Heimdall, could you please append your instructions to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885 Or include them here? As far as I can tell heimdall does not yet support the s3 and the website seems pretty dead.
I had to borrow my stepson pc to load a rooted stock rom via ODIN. Once you have that you can use dd to load a custom recovery, plus mobile ODIN is now available.

I used casual r131 and I did fine on 4.0.4 but got a new phone with JB on it. Attempted to use casual. Phone is in half root lol. shows the custom unlock image but no su... I'm like stuck in the middle. Of course I have the dang VZW version of S3...
wow, that stinks. is there a way to fix that?
I use a macbook and had issues with rooting using heimdall. I think your best and easiest option is to borrow a friend's computer with windows and just root with that - since you'll be doing most things from recovery you most likely wont need access to windows again.
if i unroot, will i need a windows computer?
