[THEORY] Hide tethering from AT&T - Samsung Infuse 4G

This is a copy/paste from my thread in the general Q&A section.
So about half a year ago AT&T waved their magic wand and detected my tethering on my Infuse 4G on stock Froyo with tethermanager.apk frozen. These days I'm on Miui (2.3.7 AOSP based) and I came up with a theory - use Orbot (Tor for Android) and its mode that routes tethering through the Tor network, onion routing it securely. Would AT&T be able to detect it?
I was using it quite a bit yesterday, and haven't gotten anything yet. I was tethering an OG Asus Transformer running ICS.
Anybody have ideas? Does Orbot protect you from deep packet sniffing?

Orbot is the same as tor tho, so that means it can't anonymize ur data. Only ur access points and IP address. Deep packet sniffing can be prevented by using https sites instead of just HTTP since it encrypts your data. From what I've thought, Att detects tethering from the user agent of your browser.

Can they detect user agent (I hear they do deep packet sniffing too) if you're tunneling through a VPN or using tor?
Also Tor encrypts everything multiple times.

I tether my tablet through the built in tethering in CM7 on the Infuse, been doing so for 6 months or so when I need info on the go. Never been bothered by AT&T, am I just lucky? Or is it harder to detect because of CM7?

It is detectable on AOSP rooms like CM7. They are able to look at the way data is transfered. It is only a matter of time until they get it perfected. Until then some will be able to get by without them noticing as long as you don't use a lot of data to attract attention.
Oh and on a side not MIUI is not AOSP. As AOSP stand for Android Open Source Project and MIUI is not open source. It is a closed version of CM coding.

As a side note here: I wasn't using alot of data and I received emails and txt saying I had to stop tethering. I was only using my Xbox for online gaming, which each game was only a couple megabytes.

next time they tell you that they know you are tethering, ask them how. snooping your internet data for user agents is a privacy issue, and can be argued that you put your phones browser to desktop mode. using alot of data doesnt mean you are tethering too. and try to limit use of strange ports too, thats a dead give away.

Is Wireless Tether missing from the Market on your phone???

Guys just a heads up I seem not to be able to find the app in the market with my TB, but on my Evo I can! Is Verizon starting to block certain apps now?

Same here... I have it DL'd and have a titanium backup copy still so I'm good. I checked AppPlanet and it's in there still so you can grab it from there if you want it.
Its not available on the market anymore because Verizon is attempting to stop free wireless tethering. Check this link for a quick blog about it. Apparently AT&T has started warning its customers to stop tethering if not paying for it. Now it looks like Verizon is starting to follow along with AT&T.
Exactly the reason I also have a copy of the apk on my SD card.
the answer is yes, verizon blocks certain apps like tether apps and hotspot. ATT does the same thing. long live AOSP phones!!
google 'wireless tether for root' and you will find links to download it, straight from the developer(s)
I've noticed some other apps are missing as well. Notably I can't seem to find "Gensoid" the Sega Genesis emulator. Other Genesis emulators, and other *soid apps (i.e. nesoid) are present, but Gensoid (which I bought for my gTab) isn't present. I assume I can pull Gensoid from my gTab, but it's odd that it's missing and it's frustrating.

Then its possible that was a malicious app as Google itself will take down apps they find malicious. No reason for Verizon to take it down.

So, if Verizon can block you from downloading certain applications, can they see what applications you've already installed? I thought that information was between the End-User and Google, and not Verizon. Also, can they remote-wipe the application? If Google can remote-wipe, is there a way to disable that functionality if you're a rooted user? It kind of pisses me off that Verizon can have say over what I download from the Android Market.
On an otherwise off-topic note, what other App Stores are there (Amazon I know of) and are they safe/trustworthy to use?

AT&T contacted me via SMS to let me know they were watching. I was utilizing TetherMe via Cydia. Was I being a data hog? No. I was using 3GB to 5GB of bandwidth on my unlimited plan. What was my usage prior to tethering. Still in that ball park.
When I called in to inquire (I played dumb), they explained that they knew I was tethering. The man on the other line was patient despite me asking stupid questions to try and throw him off. But I firmly believe that they are only after users on the Unlimited plan who are tethering.
They sent this SMS to me last week. In less than 4 days I switched carriers. Each time I called to get my number ported, the AT&T rep acting frantically wanted to know why. I was a 15yr customer. I just grinned to the Verizon rep.

How on earth can they know that a user is tethering? The traffic sent to and from the data gateway should appear the same, shouldn't it?

If it wasn't already obvious based on the type of traffic you are sending/receiving (craploads of torrents, p2p, etc), they could potentially verify source based on data packets sent/received.
Browsers generally send data that shows what they're running on as well through the user agent, though you can always change that.
Feel free to run a tcpdump on your phone with wireshark or something similar and just look around at what gets sent for yourself.

Wi-Fi question.

At work we are not allowed to go on certain websites with our work computer.
If I were to use my G2x and go on Facebook instead of using my computer is there a way to keep a record of that? And would it e traceaable? If anyone know's it would be appreciated.
Yes they can track what websites you been if you connect to their router.

If you're doing everything over your cell network I wouldn't worry about it. If you're connected to wifi at your work and the sites aren't blocked, then don't worry about it either.
Now, if it violates your workplace policy to be using your phone in the first place well that's another story.

Only if they knew your phones MAC addy, or they if they could deduce who's phone was connected just by looking at who carries what. It would kind of depend on the size of the network and who was paying attention.
My G2x shows up on my router with android_70062d507xxxxxxx for a host name, If I were the only client on the router with an Android device I'd definitely be found out. I would think that with any reasonably sized employer there would be many Android phones.
Of course if you're doing anything seriously wrong none of this applies, an investigation would go to a whole 'nuther level.
EDIT: If an IT person helped set you up or if you had to request access from your phone then you are probably being watched, but if you just connected yourself to the router from a shared password then you are probably somewhat safe.

Wifi tether that isn't adhoc?

I hope this is an easy one, but it's puzzling me to no end on this phone.
Samsung Infuse- Rooted (of course) Running Bionix and the factory kernel.
I currently use either Barnacle or Wifi tether to tether to a laptop which has gone without a hitch in most cases (sometimes wifi manager gets in the way) but I am running into issues with other devices that I would like to connect with on the day to day basis with the same type of approach.
The problem is that my Infuse creates an Adhoc network instead of a normalish router gateway setup for the tether. This works just fine on a laptop, but when I try to apply this to other phones or tablets when I'm working in the field or just need a data connection really quick, I can't use my Infuse to do so as these devices usually do not support Adhoc networks.
The touchpad I have is my main concern at this time because in the case where I need to set up a phone without carrier data, I'm typically close to a Wifi spot of some kind. I can always use my personal phone, but because AT&T's network is a little faster in my area, I'd prefer to use it instead.
Does anyone know how to get a normal hotspot out of the infuse instead of an AdHoc?

Settings->Wireless and Networks-> Mobile AP.
If stock rooted, you need to freeze/remove tethermanager.apk
If running ANY custom ROM, these have already been removed. For Froyo, ignore the warnings in the Settings menu about tethering plans and just go ahead. For GB, it should have worked immediately if you weren't running a Hellraiser ROM.

Dense? How? I know information you don't. You clearly haven't even bothered to try the built-in tethering, otherwise you'd know that it does operate in AP mode. My Tab 10.1 does not support adhoc without hacks (which I have not performed as I have not needed to do so), yet it still has always happily connected to my Infuse whether the Infuse was running Infused 1.x, Infused 2.x, Cyanogenmod 7.1, and Mosaic VI (installed using Hellraiser Beta6)
See the attached screenshot from my laptop. Note the mode - MANAGED, not adhoc. And next time, think more and try doing some research before calling a kernel developer an idiot.

I just rooted using super one click, too easy. I was frustrated because it looked Like I wasnt able to use my Infuse as a wifi hotspot even though I was able to download App Freezer and render the stock tether manager inert. If I had not read this thread I wouldn't have known to ignore the AT&T warning about having to pay extra money for the data I have already bought. Ignored that bull and am using my iPad now with the Infuse as a hotspot. Life is good again and THANK ALL the helpful posters here.

Mine tells me that I need a tethering plan and auto-disconnects itself. Anyway around this besides paying for one? I'll use maybe a few times a month to get emails is all. Not downloading etc.
UPDATE: I bought Bloatfreeze and froze the tether.apk file. Now it did connect, I renamed network and chose my own password etc. and it worked perfectly. SO, the question is...since I FROZE the tether.apk will that hide my usage and thus ATT will not be able to detect that I used any tethering and not charge me $$$ for doing so.? Sorry if this is so noob, but I am a noobie to all this, but hey in 2 hours I've rooted, froze apps etc. so not TOO bad ;-) and just double checking.....
Thanks all!
Please confirm my beliefs..just so I can be safe.

Could you detail the exact steps you took to remove tetheringmanager?
Root, open a root-enabled file explorer, and remove /system/app/tetheringmanager.apk. It doesn't hurt to reboot afterwards.

OR turn it off or "FREEZE" it with Bloatfreezer works too if you have it.
WIFI tethering works awesome!
Or do what nearly everyone who came here came to do - run an alternate ROM that removes the carrier bloatware and bigbrotherware for you.
Would not have needed to buy anything to take care of AT&T's bigbrotherware, easy enough to remount system as read/write and delete the APK manually.
and if you absolutely need something that will try and simulate Netd or Softap, use Wireless tether for root users. It's been around since before native tethering and is as good if not better in some circumstances (has MAC address control). Plus it is a good workaround for my current kernel as I'm working on updating. (using it right now as a matter of fact.)

there is no way of telling if you are tethering on cm7. they might claim you to be tethering if you use ridiculous amounts of data. id say anything less than 4gb a month is reasonable. but tethermanager doesnt exist in cm7, theres no way they can say "you have been tethering".

Folks, this has been discusses many times here. ROM has nothing to do with it. It is your browser string that's flagging you. If you change the browser string on your tethering receiver to match that on your phone, you should be good to go. Search for this thread: "AT&T wised up".
you can change the browser string on your phone to desktop easily. that doesnt give anything away. and i dont think att has the right to look that deep into what you are doing.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.
