I Have DS too
I'm in the same simple situation u r..
From the way i see it now, we need to BOOT with the XTC CLIP to make the DS S-Off
Then u should root it with SUPERONECLICK.. search on the forum ..
Finally, install any ROM u would like in ROM MANGER .. (CayanogenMod / CoreDroid..)
Hope i helped
p.s.
I'm searching a different way to S-Off The Device .. so if u find another way.. pls let me know

You're right in saying that the only way to root on DSS is currently XTCclip.
But as for ROMs the only ones you'd be able to instal (except official ones) are the customs that you'll find in the android development section of this forum (although I don't believe that any are available through ROM manager).
there are four or five different cooks.....to choose from, but the number has doubled in the last week alone so things are certainly looking up.

would i be correct in saying that once i s-off'd my phone and then rooted it, i would be able to uninstall the apps installed by my telco?
i'm not opposed to using the rom installed by my telco, it seems fast enough. i only want to uninstall their stupid bloody apps (which aren't actually apps, but rather links to their website).
Yes, you are right

Can you root using Gingerbreak ? Cuz i read that you need to flash an unsecured boot.img to make SuperOneClick work. What's the difference?
excellent.
i might look into buying myself an xtc clip.
unless a software method comes up soon.

yeah, i'll probably have a look around but they're not that expensive.
i could probably then re-sell it and make my money back.
@shrome
Yes u can use Gingerbreak. That's how I rooted mine since superoneclick wouldn't work. You'll get an error message which u can ignore and then just reboot. Greetz
Edit: device still needs to be s-off to do so...

Yeah, i know about the S-OFF part, I'l wait for 2-3 weeks, then use the XTC Clip. If gingerbreak is usable, why is there so much fuss about superoneclick?? There must be some cons......do you know any? Anyway, thanks !!!
Edit: i read somewhere that gingerbreak wipes the data on ur SD card. Is that true?

I used gingerbreak 1.2 to root after getting s-off and it has done nothing at all to damage my sd-card
It made the card un-mountable when you tried to temp root with out s-off, but that was easy fixed with a battery out reboot

Did you format your SD card or did it have data? Cuz the gingerbreak page says it's better to have a formatted one, but i don't wanna format, cuz there's a lot of data on it.

copy the data from the card to your computer first.
then after you've run gingerbreak, copy the data back.
or, go buy another sdcard. they're very cheap.
Please forgive me as I am definitely a complete newbie here. I am trying to root my DS so that I can hopefully run a Bluetooth RSAP app to link my car phone system. I have sent the phone away and had it made S-OFF and I have tried to download Gingerbreak from downloads it says "cannot open file" what am I doing wrong.

I've been thinking the same, also the gold card that the xtc clip makes worked in my old desire to flash ruu's that I couldn't previously flash no matter how many times I tried to make one,so maybe a copy of the card would work for all HTC's?

Hi there everybody,
I'm probably in the wrong section of the forum, and my questions are nubby I know, but I get confused.
My Desire S is S-ON, and I would like to get is S-OFF. Is this possible, because it is needed to be able to root the phone right?
And an offtopic question, what is a flash-able app, and what is the difference with a normal custom .apk which can be installed from the sd card.
Thanks in advance

so far, no one ever mention about developing one. so, you might need to wait. if you can't wait, just get someone with XTC clip to do it for ya...

It seems that HTC reverse its decision to block everything on the latest versions, after the petition that circulated on the net, requesting the release.
See article below:

Actually, no.
From the same article:
"In short: custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries (like ClockworkMod) may never come to the EVO 3D, barring some kind of epic HTC screw-up."
Hi,
Is there a software way to desimlock the Desire S ?
I can ask the operator to do it but it would be simpler if I could do it myself.
Thanks in advance.

No SIMLOCK (or carrier lock as its often called) will not be removed by installing a Custom ROM, rooting or S-OFF'ing your device.
I believe that you either need to use what's called a Goldcard to achieve this or else pay your carrier to do it for you.
Also goldcard will also not work. You can pay your carrier or use a xtc clip. Best bet is an unlock code off eBay or another trusted site.

In which case either run it on your device and find out, or else write to the software original author and ask whether it is likely to work?

where is the simlock stored on DS? in the radio firmware/hboot or other place?
overwriting the radio or hboot with one from unlocked version wouldn't do the trick?

I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to where SIMLOCK is actually stored.
I would guess that its not stored in RADIO or HBOOT as we all flash the same versions of both of these whether we're locked or unlocked and our lock status is never changed.
But, I'd say that the cost of paying for the service online $10-$20, is minimal compared to the damage that you could do to the device with unknown flashing from one handset to another.
i guess the risk can be compared to that of unlocking hboot or using custom firmware. for some people that's ok...
almost every piece of software on this forum can brick your device
for example i found a program on this forum, gfree, that writes directly to mtd partitions.
other examples include kernels modified by "developers" asking for donations to take programming classes. if it's not risky using a kernel with filesystem code modified by them i don't know what is
so, sure, if you just want it unlocked and don't care about custom firmwares and such, 10-20$ is a great deal.
anyway, i was just asking in theory, where is the simlock stored on Desire S?

Thanks guys. Can someone provide a safe website to get an unlock code ?
Question for dev guys. Does it will be able to enable data2ext for htc chacha and use a extra partition created by CWM on mSD card, on stock roms? stock but rooted roms?
+1
I would like to know that, too...
I'd love that too, my girlfriend's Chacha is always out of memory and it's driving her mad (especially coming from an iPhone). Link2SD is the best I've managed and that only works with FAT32 partition but even with that it's run out of space. Superdroid has A2SD I've noticed but I'm yet to try that.
I use link2sd on my rooted chacha with an ext3 partition and it is perfect
I looked at that app on the market and comments are that it doesn't work on gingerbread.
Are they incorrect then?
This is exciting tho as it means I may give my chacha another go later!

Yep, you're right!
I'm using superdroid but the app2sd on it doesn't work for me.
This app works perfectly!!!
Only have 34mb free but its enough to prevent gmail from not syncing.
I can put all my apps with widgets on the SD now.
I used cwm to partition a while back, and this app said the ext was in fact ext3.
Very much appreciated

Which system apps did you remove? I find the contacts app to be the main problem, after syncing and stuff it's ballooned to over 30mb.

No it doesn't, you need S-off before you can dream of doing anything like this for the ChaCha.
and once s-off, it is my undertanding that you cant receive official htc updates anymore, am i right?
tnx

Hm... also want to know that.
If you/we got s=Off and CID=111111, OTA updates will stop showing?
I don't know re ota, but I'm using superdroid now.
You would need root, not s-off but only way to get root is s-off presently.
System apps can't be moved, I've even tried to make system apps (maps , gmail ) user apps in order to move them, but titanium just froze.
You can move *everything* but system apps with this app and that creates more than enough space, and the widgets still work on moved apps too.
I've gone widget crazy and still have 30mb free, which believe me is a big improvement. Before I had to forgo widgets just to keep enough memory to prevent syncing freezing up.

Does link2sd work on an s-offed, rooted stock rom?
Tnx

yes, it does.
I am going to reignite this thread as the original post was never answered.
Can Data2EXT be used on the ChaCha with a rooted stock ROM. Link2SD can be used, but Data2EXT requires a little more. It would be really positive if it could.

Thanks! I noticed this forum is buzzing with excitement, compared to the myTouch 3G Slide forums.
Which version of HTC Sense should I go with after I S-OFF? I like Sense 4.0, which my brother has on his One S, but Sense 3.6 has also caught my eye.
Sense 4 isnt perfectly functional but unless you use BT alot it doesn't matter.I'd go for S4 personally (Although im on MIUI at the minute as the battery life is far better than any sense variant)
I don't actually have a Bluetooth. I mostly like eye candy. I like aosp, I'm a man of bells and whistles. I like to be able to show my friends the advanced graphics and such.

When you unlock bootloader you obtain s-off if im not wrong and the best way to do it is whit revolutionary method or htcdev works aswell but if you send your device backin whit htcdev method they will know you have hacked ur phone :/

Most definitely S-off, with S-off you have full read write permissions for all partitions. With HT Dev unlock you only have read write permissions for your System, Boot, and Recovery partitions. Plus you have to flash the boot.img for each ROM you want to use manually via fastboot command or use Smartflash in 4EXT.
Sorry but I do not know about Darktremor.
