What you are about to read might be a stupid question, but nonetheless a question indeed. And Not really a Infuse question, but I am too lazy to Navigate out of the Infuse forums on this site, plus I'm sure you guys are more than knowledgeable to answer it. I have Brighthouse Cable internet at the moment with a linksys router. Now say I got to like Newegg or Bestbuy and grab up a Wireless router, Would I be able to hook that up and have wifi? and If so, would I have to call brighthouse and add a wireless service or pay an extra fee? Let me know
Peace out with the grease out,
Malicious.
you should be able to buy a wireless router use it and not have to pay any fees most cable companys offer wireless modems to thier customers now so you might want to check with your provider

That's what I guessed. Been needing a new router since mine already lost 2 ports T-T so thought i'd look into the whole wireless thing. thanks for the info +1
When you pay for internet, you pay for one tunnel to the web. All the router does is distributes it among several clients.
Might I suggest the Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N router, Open Source firmware and a great router (put it on wireless N only mode for better performance)

you can also checkout websites like dealnews.com or slickdeals.net for bargains. I've seen routers refurbs for $10 or new or $15-$20 if you just want something simple. It's not everyday but every now and then

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any work being done on getting USB 3G/4G modems to work with the g-tab. I saw there is some effort on the archos 101 but it is still in the early stages. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940470 I am pretty new to the whole android world so I have no idea if something like that is even possible on the g-tab. Anyone?
For me, I would use a wireless broadband router. Or, tether it to a 3G phone if you have broadband access on it.

+1 This is how I do it...works great. I always have my phone with me so it's convenient. I don't have to pay for an additional data line for the tablet, either!
Yeah, thats how I would if I had the option at the moment heh. My company pays for my phone and for a 3g usb modem. The phone (even though its a crackberry) has a 10mb a month limit on it so tethering isn't possible and they don't want to let me get unlimited data and give up the usb modem, go figure... heh been trying to convice them to at least let me trade the device in for one of those wireless 3g routers that verizon has...
Well thanks for the feedback though! knew it was a shot in the dark heh.

We worked on it for awhile, but the support just isn't there and no one wants to do it.

This is what I use with my Clear 4G modem. I then use VOIP and a Tekkeon battery and no more cell phone charges (plus the G-Tab has an always on WiFi too). There is the Clear charge (of course), but I was paying for that anyway. Needless to say, the savings on dropping the AT&T plan quickly pays back for the CradlePoint and the Battery

What provider do you use? I have T-Mobile and have been tethering successfully. So far they haven't added a tethering plan for me. Until now that I've outed myself.
Does anyone know if the free hotspot mod that worked on the Inc works on the Tbolt as well....I have a sneaking feeling that it doesnt since the 4g card sort of throw a wrench in the programming stuff, but I don't rmember how it worked since I rooted and didnt need it after about June of last year. But I havent rooted my tbolt yet and am interested in using it after the 5/15 trail runs out (if it mkaes any difference I am not in a 4g area, so 3g hotspot would be sufficient...

Correct! you pay once for the data to use on that ONE device. If Mobile providers went by the same metrics as home service you would be paying $50 for the internet to use on any device you wanted. Since it's a mobile device you are paying for just that device not whatever devices you want. $30 for unlimited LTE is a great deal, and it's people like you who feel entitles to leach off the network for free so you can run a server or not have to pay for home internet. But thats another discussion ;-)

I agree with you but also believe that we should get a small monthly allowance for wifi tethering. Maybe 200mb. Maybe less.
I'm the guy who needs to access the web from my laptop to edit a document and email it to a customer quickly while at a trade show or traveling once every 3 months. I now go to a free wifi hotspot somewhere instead of paying verizon.
People using hacked tethering that use a lot of data is not cool.
its people like me who already pay vzw $50 a month for internet at home and $30 a month for internet on my phone, who, when traveling, would like to be able to use the device I pay verizon for the privilege of using to view the same exact data on a larger freakin screen. Why do they give a crap whether I look at a website from my phone or use the phone to pull up the website on a laptop. Don't give me the people like you spiel....

They give a crap because you're paying Verizon to use data on the phone, not whatever device you'd like. It's as simple as that.
They (vzw) give a crap cuz it makes them money... Dont sugar coat it, for years "people like us" have kept them goin if i wanna leech so i can check my email on a laptop once in a while i will.
Anyone trying to use tether for a home Internet connection is just stupid 4g or not...

There should be some additional benefit to buying home internet from them as well. It is a shame they can't see the wisdom in this from a marketing perspective.
That said, the rumor is that they are going after people for trying to do this... Personally i'm going to use the crap out of my hotspot till they take it away My 4G was way better than the hotel wifi on my current business trip, so i've racked up quite a bit of data. Between downloading the new ubuntu 11.04 iso and watching the office, while sitting at the airport, i think i've gotten my money's worth.
Hello all, i want to have access to wifi at work (dads bakery) there is no wifi signal there, is there other alternatives to have access to wifi? im not familiar with this things do i have to buy something portable to have it i do have 3g with t-mobile on my phone.
not sure what type of phone you have, but you can tether your "phone internet" to your transformer.
i just did it while on a road trip from my wife's old Palm treo Pro i connected via bluetooth tether
If you have an android phone, you can try to use the Bluetooth tethering option, which doesn't require rooting the phone. If you do a search on the forums, someone made a nice step by step guide for it. The bluetooth option never worked for me so I had to end up rooting my phone and then downloading wifi tether. Downside is it makes your phone really hot and can cause it to crash or turn off. I'm super ghetto so I have the back case off my phone leaned up against a fan hahahahaha....keeps it at a nice 79 degrees instead of 110 degrees.
I'm not an expert at these things either, I just looked for guides on this forum and also youtube. Took me a couple of days to get it all working. Goodluck!
You could try a wireless 'hotspot' from one of the wireless broadband providers too.

Depends on how much you use your TF for that purpose but 200MB is very little. Becareful about getting charged overages.
Hi,
I'm going to be changing my mobile provider to get a better rate and they want to charge me quite a bit more to enable 1GB of tethering per month with my unlimited data plan. I was wondering if there was a way around this? I read somewhere that custom ROMs sometimes can allow tethering without the additional plan and I also looked at Wired Tether which seems to do what I'm looking for.
I was wondering if someone might be able to shed a bit more light on the topic?
Cheers
Details or this just seems like your trying to advertise an app.
Which provider do you have, which one are you going too? Only a few left that have unlimited for new users. If your on vzw are you on 4g or not?

As they say more details required
Which provider you with for a start? The app you are highlighting will not do any more than the phone does already as all data passed through the phone is logged!
Looks like you either r find another provider or pay more, I have read through most of these forums for a few weeks now and have seen nothing that a custom rom will give you to find the loophole you are looking for.

Both providers do actually offer unlimited, 'fair usage'-free contracts.

I haven't seen that explicitly written anywhere either, however, I checked and afaik Talkmobile do not allow tethering but I've been tethering for the entire duration of my contract.

I'm currently with TalkMobile as well, only because I manged to sign up on their 12 month unlimited contract last year. I'm also looking at moving to Three. If you go on their 'One Plan' they actually state that they do support tethering, but none of their other plans do.

That's exactly why I signed up in April last year. If you follow Quidco's offers they were offering 100 quid cashback for people to get a 12 month SIM only contract. One was 15 pounds/month with unltd internet.
If you do want to move, keep an eye on Quidco's Three offers, there can be some really good ones!

Cheers mate, I'll keep an eye out. My plan is to go SIM-only and keep my DS running for a while, can't justify the cost involved for any of the phones which are out there right now. Three's SIM-only on the rolling contract looks like the best bet.

I don't tether very often, but sometimes find myself in the situation with work where I need Internet immediately and tethering is the only way to do it.
Never had a problem yet doing it on TalkMobile, but I've got to be lucky with something in life
I'm not sure that providers can tell if you are tethering or not, been on orange fair use contract for two years and I tether twice a week with never a problem.

Cheers guys. In case anyone is interested, I've been using my new Three sim for 3 days now. I spoke to a Three representative yesterday and he told me that if I try and tether the tethered device will just not have network access. For the last two days though I have been using USB tethering without any problem. So no tethering package and at least USB tethering works. I haven't been able to try wifi hotspot as I'm using CoolDroid which (last time I checked) doesnt have functional wifi tethering.
Coverage is also pretty good in Southampton for anyone in the area considering changing =)
Thanks for the info mate. Now I just need to get off my lazy backside and change service providers
As for the stuff about the signal in Southampton, it would be really useful if I still lived there, but I'll just have to test it for myself up here. At least you'll be able to get a signal while you're watching the matches at St.Marys

Also, I lived in Bristol until Sept and the signal there with Three isn't too bad. My family are on Three there and I had a Three sim in my work phone. =)

Actually, there were wifi issues in general with AOSP JB in general. If you use a touchwiz ROM, then you won't have an issue. Stick with your current router unless you absolutely have to change it.
But if do want to get a router, then I would recommend at least a $60 netgear or cisco router (preferably a netgear though)

yeah im thinking about the netgear wireless n dual band router at best buy for $79.
the ol linksys wrt54g is one of the best routers ever. the only problem is your limited to 54mb bandwidth, but most folks dont have service half that speed.

I personally will never by a Netgear product again. I replaced my old Netgear with a new n series Netgear one and had difficulty setting up the old one on a friends cpu. Called for support and they would not help due to the "support time" ending. I told them I just bought a new one from them and asked to use the support I have for the new one on the old one. They said no. After a long heated discussion I told them to pound sand, I returned the new Netgear and bought a linksys. Glad I did because I have issues at my work with Netgear routers anyways. Constantly need to be reset.
Ended up with the dual band netgear wireless n router. Nice piece of hardware but it still didnt solve my wifi issues on aosp.
