Using different USB chargers. Harmfull or Not? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

At home I have my Samsung charger that came with my Galaxy. In my car I have a universal USB charger and at work I have a USB charger from an LG phone.
Will the car/work chargers harm my phone?
I know all USB chargers are 5V but they have different milliAmps compared to the Samsung charger.

SR you should use a 1 amp charger to get a decent charge out of it

Thanks for the info.
If I plug the USB cable into a computer and try to charge the phone? How many milliamps or amps does the computer USB put out?

Not 1 amp I assure you lol

Computer
Based on personal experience, charging off a computer is the ninth circle of phone hell. Mine takes twice as long to charge without using it, but that may be due to the fact I'm using a laptop.

When charging from a computer it only gets 500mA, hence why it takes twice as long to charge. I've also noticed that my (supposed) 1A car charger can't keep up if running gps navigation...

Sometimes I use the charger for my tablet and the phone charges in like 60min. It can't be good for the battery, I don't think.
In the car I have a dual outlet usb adapter that outputs 1A and at home I have numerous chargers I use. All 1A

I've read numerous reports, of people having issues with their batteries, when using chargers from iphones, blackberry, Motorola etc... Problems like the battery not displaying the correct amount of charge etc... The OEM chargers are pretty inexpensive... I'd just get a couple... Home, Office etc & avoid any headaches.

you need to use a charger similar to your original, in this sense:
1.) Stock charger is 5v i do believe, usig one under wont cause issues, but wont charge correctly, using one over can cause multiple issues, like blowin the **** outa the board on your phone.
2.) Most usb chargers have 2 pins, where the standard USB cable has 4, the two on most chargers are far left, and far right (ground, and +5v), if your phones charger, its not designed for ones with all 4 (usually for proprietary type cables with access pins on device end), and the device trys to identify the current with another device and possibly not leave your device grounded properly.
3.) Keep in mind your chargers mAh (ampere/hour) consider this as how fast the charger charges the device, it is always best to use one at, or higher then your battery mAh, which is basicly the charge capacity of the cell (lithium ion)
Some USB chargers are actually only 500mAh which is basicly usless unless the device is off, and with a cell the size of a cellphone, would take a while to charge
Always good to know yoir data

I have many micro-usb chargers spread around at various places so I always have one and never have had an issue. At work I use an old charger from my BB9700, at home I used the charger from my Kindle 3, and the charger I carry around with me is the one that came with my Skyrocket which I only use if I am stuck somewhere else and need to charge. I also have an AT&T (from when I had my BB) and Rocketfish car charger and both work the same.
Never had an issue with my battery thus far, though I have only had the phone for 4 months so not sure what the long term effects are. Worst case scenario is that I will need to buy a new battery at some point.

I used a blackberry car charger for my cappy back a year ago and after about 6 months of using the charger my device would not charge past 70%. No one ever figured out why. The full story is much longer with a lot more info and data but that's the short version. Ever since I've been skeptical Bout using anything other than oem

Issue with charger

When I bought the Infuse Wednesday, I was excited to discover that the charging port is the same as my Bluetooth headset (Plantronics Voyager Pro) but while using the phone at work with the charger plugged in for the last 4 hours, I noticed my battery is around 20%. So my question is, do chargers and data cables made for other products not work with the Infuse? And if so, WHY!?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
i can't tell you offhand exactly why but its definitely true. My wifes samsung focus (wp7) charger actually doesnt charge my phone faster than it dies unless I am doing absolutely nothing on it. My phone actually died watching a movie through the hdmi out using her charger. And of course it died with 6 minutes to go. If I find any more info as to the "why" part I will be sure to post. But I wanted to let you know the charger definitely makes a difference
ok so I found a better answer: even though they all use the same voltage. Those 5v chargers have 1 main difference. Different Amperage. Some chargers output only .5A, while others put out 1A. These differences will in turn make the difference between how fast or well it charges your device. This is info I gathered so take it with a grain of salt. If anyone has a better answer or can elaborate feel free to do so!!
Ok, this does make sense. The charger I've been using all night is 5V 180mA... Not all that powerful. Just didn't think it would leave me at 5% 8 hours into my night shift...
Thanks.

Plantronics headset chargers are rated, at MOST, 300 mA. (That's what the one that came with my 975 is rated.)
Our phones need at LEAST 500 mA. The wall charger is rated 700 mA, if you want to run navigation in a car dock it looks like you need at least 1000 mA.
Also, our chargers signal that a "dumb charger" is present by shorting D+ and D- together. I'm not sure what our phones will do with chargers that don't do this (at the moment I'm assuming the phone goes into USB charging mode instead of AC.) In the case of the car dock, what the charger does is irrelevant, as the dock signals its presence in another way and does not pass through D- and D+ from the charger. (D+ and D- go to the audio line out of the dock.)
Also, our phone (and likely many others) assume that they can get whatever current is needed from the charger, so if the charger "droops", it doesn't seem to do anything other than act weird (in most cases, drain the battery).
And another problem I found.. When I first got my Infuse, I was thrilled to see that it used the same type of cable that several other devices I have used. MicroUSB...
So I tried charging with the cable & charger from my Kindle. No go.
It will charge with the Kindle charger, just not the Kindle USB cable. Which makes the 4 extra kindle cables I have useless..
If I had time and inclination, I'd set about to figure out what the difference is between the two cables.
One of the reasons I returned my Atrix and bought an Infuse was because None of my MICRO-USB chargers worked with the Atrix. So far they have all worked with my Infuse.

One thing I learned working at multiple cell phone places: Motorola phones are PICKY when it comes to chargers. Sprint basically has an ongoing memo to every tech, moto phones are ONLY to be used with moto chargers. It makes no real sense, but it's true.
I've also noticed that my iGo charger takes a good bit less time for a full charge than what came with the phone. Also, not using the adapter and plugging the phone directly into a computer via USB, also makes charging faster. I this k the problem is the USB adapter that Samsung tossed in. Just my .02!

One thing - phones vary widely in how they determine that a "dumb charger" is connected.
Samsungs look for D- and D+ shorted to each other. A lot of generic chargers (like the $1.25 Monoprice car chargers) do this.
Apple devices look for weird resistor combinations from D- and D+ to +5 and ground. See http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/icharge.html
Mini-USB motos used weird combos of resistors to D- and D+ along with resistors between a normally unconnected pin and GND. MicroUSB defines this extra pin as "ID". Our phone uses resistors between ID and GND to determine if "other" devices are connected, such as the Jig, Car Dock, Home Dock, etc. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275 for more details.
The MicroUSB cable that came from our phones is pretty thin-gauge wire. I have a cable from Monoprice that should work MUCH better at high currents, and HAS worked better at high currents with the car dock and an iPad charger. (Without the car dock, it gets seen as a USB charger due to the funky iCharging resistors mentioned above. The car dock works because it doesn't pass USB D+ and D- from the charger to the phone.)
WARNING: I reference the Monoprice cheapo chargers above. They claim they are a 1A charger but they are NOT. They have a resistor that sets peak switch current of the regulator to 600 mA, and output current is going to be less than this.

LG Op One Charger?

So I broke my Optimus One LG original charger, and I can't find an original LG charger anywhere! I've gone through two local chargers, but they don't last more than two weeks with me.
Would another company's phone's Micro USB charger be alright for my phone? Any specific company or phone which would best suit the Optimus One?
I'm asking because I used to think all Micro USB chargers are the same, but the local ones used to screw my touchscreen up if they were plugged into my phone for 30 mins or so.
A generic USB charger is fine. The way the phone is wired in side determines if it is going to pull 3volts or 5 volts from the usb charger. If you were trying to charge an Ipad then you need to find a high output charger. I've been using my HTC usb charger and Ipad charger on my OP and it has been charging fine.
That's the beauty of Europe mandating phones have the micro usb chargers. No Vasaline required when you need to buy a new charger and cable.
Androids are sensitive to chargers, but any half decent MicroUSB charger should see you through. (The roadside ones don't qualify as half decent ofc )
I carry my Kindle charger usually since it's very compact and many Indian buildings have moved to sockets that take both Indian and American plugs, and it works fine with the phone.

blackberry chargers and moto chargers have the data pins shorted in the charger themselves. This is because they have have high speed/low speed charging detection system (as do most android phones now).
If the data pins are shorted, the charging rate is up to 1000ma, without the data pins shorted, many phones limit the charging rate to 500ma. This is to keep the phone from shorting out USB ports on computers by drawing too much power through them. The wall adapters that require separate USB cables don't always have that, or they limit the power output to about 750ma. The dozen or so smartphones in my office require about 700ma to operate, so the effective charge rate is +50ma, which takes FOREVER to charge.
I took an old 5v 1200ma wall wart from a router and cut the end off and soldered on a USB connecter (with the data pins shorted) now I can plug use those multi-plug extendable USB cables for charging any kind of phone just by putting in the right adapter tip. My P509TN will charge from dead to 100% in just over an hour.

I got a similar one, but it has one port meant for an ipad/tablet, which outputs 2A - that is helpful for when I am running car navigation and wifi hotspot at the same time. I also had to get a charging-only usb cable because regular cables would trigger usb storage mode on the phone.

To bad the Charge won't draw more than ~0.8A... Also, it is the charger causing the phone to go to mass storage mode, not the cable. A microUSB cable is a microUSB cable, and if the cable says "charging only" they have the data pins shorted out (I believe that's what is done) and it really isn't fixing the root cause of the issue.

The only way you could speed up charging would be to modify it via the kernel, or try to force load a module that does the same thing. Odds are the fastcharger script just gets the system to recognize USB charging as a wall charger. Either way, I wouldn't recommend using anything that says it'll make your phone charge faster unless there was SIGNIFICANT data to support the claim as well as evidence that it doesn't harm the hardware.
Charging the battery too fast is very dangerous too. I tried "supercharging" one of my batteries and it almost caught fire.

Samsung smartphones and Tablets charge in std mode (Charging USB) unless the two data wires are "shorted". (I have seen it done directly in a high speed charge only cable or in the Samsung chargers. Some say they use a resistor.) When the data pins are "shorted", Samsung switches to high speed charging. (Charging AC). I have been harassing a factory overseas for a dual car charger (2100mA) with one std. Port (iPad) and one Samsung port. It should be available soon.

General battery questions and doubts

Well I'm little confusing now .
I have 2 charges.
One with out 5v 2000mah
Two with out 5v 10000mah
I noticed by my self but I need to be sure, big cables delays charge?
Before new systems, like ics and others updates on HTC Systems.
I always charged my phones with 1A.
Now even with 2A charger, some times my phone does not charge. Including some times if I use phone while charging battery decreases.
Maybe it is happening cause of my big cables?
What Is the influence of cables on wall charges?
Roms got influencing the charge time?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Actually out of the only 3 charging options I have the walk charging is the longest. Will reviece full charge in
3 hours but via computer about 7 and just over that for ps3. Surely isn't wall charging always meant to be the most efficient way? When you said big cable, how long? Is it a USB extender? If so I'd say its the cable having problems, generally at the point of transfer from the original USB cable to the extended one.
Sent from my Sensation using XDA
Well, longer cables means more resistance. Ohm's law says higher resistance, lower voyage and current. Longer cables could explain it in theory, but unless the cable is like 100 feet, I wouldn't be too worried.
Not sure where the issue lies.
Well, it's as simple as this, if you connect to a PC, the current through the USB cable is lesser (500-800mA). This means it will take a longer time to charge the device.
Now, for HTC standard wall socket charger, the output is 1A.
There are chargers that will definitely charge your phone faster, but it wouldn't be recommended as it will heat up the battery.
Now, as far as cables go, length isn't that important if we are talking about something less than 2-3 meters. But if you use an extension, there will be some current loss and also, if the extension quality isn't good enough, it will carry lesser current & take longer to charge your phone.
Also, it would be a good idea to leave your phone for a 5 hour charge on the standard HTC charger and then re-calibrate your battery. Often, a fresh ROM install may not give you the correct battery readings. So, charge to 100% and re-calibrate by flushing the battery stats bin file.
Well, the cables that i use is with more or less 4 meters.

I think that one of the cables you use is bust then. It is true that longer the cable the increased reistance but its not even noticeable. Try experimenting with different cables and to see which one is deffective.

Charging slow???

Out of the blue I noticed my S3 was charging very slowly, it even was losing a charge while it was plugged in while I was using it. I figure it had something to do with my custom ROM so I reflash, still same outcome. The battery was still holding a good charge, so I figured it was something else. I then went out and bought a new charger, which came with a micro usb cord to see if that helped. Plugged in the new charger while using my old micro usb cord, still same outcome. Then used the new micro usb cord and old charger, charging went back to normal, problem solved! I would of never thought that the cord would malfunction from day to day use after such a short lifespan. Moral of the story, check your cords if you experience the same problem, it could save you some time and money!
I bought some cheap ones off Amazon. They won't charge the s3 but will my touchpad. But my s3 charger won't charge my touchpad. Stuff is weird at times.

A lot of times it's the DC power brick that makes the difference. Not all of them have the same power output. Rarely, if ever, is it the actual cord itself. USB cables use pretty thin gauge wire already and the only way you're going to get a difference from one cable to another would be if it was REALLY cheap and using an ultra-thin wire or if it was a REALLY long cable (increases in cable length equate to increased resistance to electrical transmission...)
All USB cables are 5 volts. However, there can be significant differences in the milliamp output for each DC adapter. Aside from being a computer geek and gamer who builds custom PC's, I happen to be a hotel General Manager. I just checked our catch-all box of phone chargers and found that while every charger has an output of 5v, the amperage put out varied from 350 mA to 1000 mA from one charger to the next.
This variance in output is why some chargers take so long as compared to others. I don't know what the actual Samsung charger output is, since my charger is at home, but my guess is it's between 800 and 1000 mA.
I use the stock BB charger to charge both my 9900 and GS3, the BB charges pretty normal but lately I've been having a problem with the charging time on my S3, I have to charge it everyday now, my usage isn't that heavy, it lasts me a day and a half normally. Going to start using the stock charger to see if there is a difference.
I'm using the Samsung stock charger after not having used it for a month and noticing that my battery levels have deteriorated after using my BB stock charger. The battery seems to be discharging while on the charger! I'm in for a world of pain, going to monitor it for a while. I could be stressing over nothing.
