Can someone please tell me how to get CIFS.ko or whatever it takes for CIFS support on any of the ROMs? Or if any of these already have it, which ones?
Do I just have to update to the correct Kernel?
Thanks!
what is CIFS.ko?
CIFS.ko is a kernel module that enables Windows Network access.
If you use CIFS Manager or Mount Manager then you can have network folders or drives mounted as local folders on the phone and all the apps can access them directly - video, music, file expl etc. I have it on my Note and it works great. I used to have a ROM on the Infuse that had it so I know its doable.
If you search around on XDA there is a bunch of info on it.
Already reported.. no one else needs to tell him that he should have posted in Q&A...
And I have never seen the rom that can do that... HOWEVER.. I do know that there is atleast one app that can do that.. I tried pushing a file to my phone once... but it didn't work for some odd reason. I don't know why.. but that was a while ago. They have probably fixed the issue since then.. either way..
And dropbox is nice for some of the light duty stuff.

This is not about pushing or dropping - its about Playing.
I have lots of huge video files on my network - I want to be able to play them in any player without thinking about anything except selecting the folder, the file and playing the file in ANY player. This is a standard ko module that should be included in all ROMs but for some unknown reason it is not.
And you totally posted in the wrong section... Q&A bro...

works and it's free
Airdroid is OK, but it is not even close to the same thing.
What CIFS does is allow PC shared folders and/or drives SHOW UP as drives on your device so that ANY app that navigates the folder structure can see all the files on those drives and access them the same as if they were local.
So any Music app can play mp3 from any shared drive - ditto for videos, docs etc.

I was trying to put dlna app from a ginger rom (ms2ginger) on cm7, but i keep getting FC error anytime i'd tried to open.
here is a brief about what have i done:
1. copied Dlna.apk and DlnaSystemService.apk to /system/app
2. copied libdlnahttpjni.so, libdlnajni.so, libdlnaprofileparser.so and libdlnasysjni.so to /system/lib
3. copied dlnaserv to /system/bin
3. copied com.motorola.android.dlna_library.xml to /system/etc/permissions
4. copied com.motorola.android.dlna.jar to /system/framework
Check all permissions, it seems to be ok
I think a lot of people who uses cm7 will like to have this one on their rom, so if anyone have a workaround for this, please, give some ideas...
P.D: I'm claiming for some help from devs kings
Here is a logcat of the FC:
dlna is a blur dependant????
Been trying to do this as well, found two apps on Market that work the same and/or better. BubbleUPnP for streaming, MX Video Player for local renderer.
Cheers!
Try imediashare. Quite good.

Exactly!!! That's why I tried to get a functionally workaround for dlna on cm7, but without help of cm7 for defy devs (Eg @quarx, @epsylon3, @maniac103), I don't think it's possible...
they are so busy trying to make ics work on defy that this is just a not worthy problem for them...

I just bought a new TV (Samsung UN32EH4000) and I've had very good luck using its ConnectShare USB port to connect to an external hard drive and a flash drive to play music and videos. However, I haven't had any luck connecting my S3. I'm wondering if this is possible? The TV just says "There is no device detected." I toggled it back and forth from MTP and PTP but still no joy. Anyone else got this or any other Android device to work?
This is what you need. It is amazing and you can use it with any HDMI TV.

Thanks for the reply! That's really cool! I'll consider that. I was really hoping that there was some sort of hack or tweak that would make my S3 mount as an external storage device but if there isn't one I guess this could probably work...

there is an app / tweak (root only) that will allow you to mount only the external SD card as a mass storage device like in earlier android phones and that will allow you to do what you want.
If its a dlna enabled TV you can mirror it with your s3

I saw a YouTube video of it just search for it s3 dlna, give it a shot - settings, more settings - search for nearby devices (dlna)
Probably search within your TV to make it searchable, but that all on your end.

I got it to work! Installed the v1.4 (v1.5 probably would work too) from the link i listed before.
Hi guys, I just bought this new tablet from Google. So far so good, I've registered my Google Play account and found out the tablet recognizes all my games that I installed on Xperia Play. That's great. But why cannot I install some of those game on the tablet? I've already paid for them so would like to play them on a different device, that's all.
Some of the games that seem to be incompatible: Dead Trigger, Heroes Call, Offworld, Six-Guns...
I'd appreciate your advice, and sorry for a newbish question. It's my first Android tablet ever.
TIA.
Some "older" games may not work in ICS or JB and it won't be possible to play them in your Nexus 7. And also some new games may be optimized for new hardware and won't run in a XP. All in all, there's no general rule for this issue.
By the way, Dead Trigger runs fine in XP with both GB and ICS and also it's optimized for Tegra 3. I don't understand why it doesn't work for you. Maybe it's an issue with JB and in that case I'm sure it will be fixed soon because is a quite new game and Madfinger Games is continously supporting it.
Thanks for the response. I believe this is more a Nexus 7 than Xperia Play problem, but I'll hazard another question..
I've installed the Tegra Zone app and tried to install some games from there (Dead Trigger, Heroes Call).
What happens when I click "install" though, is that the app throws me back to the Google Play Store, which again says "This app is incompatible with your device".
WTF?
It's odd, a brand-new Nexus 7 and I can't install Tegra-optimised apps.
EDIT:
Also one more important thing:
Could I somehow copy my save games from Xperia to Nexus 7 without rooting? I'd like to continue some games there, not to start from the beginning.
I can see some games' files on Xperia on my PC, but the Nexus does not seem to display them in the USB disk mode...

You cannot send apk files vi Bluetooth. You can rename the file to something else, like .dat or .zip, send it to bluetooth, then rename it back to .apk

Hi all,
Just a quick question. For some reason I can't get any music players other than the built in one with ES File Explorer to find the music (.mp3s) that I've transferred over from my pc. I tried downloading some using a browser and those ones are picked up by the players just fine.
What I've tried so far:
Copying files to different folders.
Tried stock Htc player, Google music player and Shuttle player.
Wiped Caches.
Reboot phone.
Media Scanner app from play store.
I checked and there is no .nomedia file anywhere.
The only thing that I haven't tried is reflashing the Rom, but that will be a last resort.
As I already mentioned I can play them using the ES File Explorer also the File explorer that comes with ViperXL.
Currently running ViperXL 3.2.8 with stock kernel. I've had the phone for about 6 months and about 2 months being rooted and running Viper. This is the first time that I've ever tried to use this phone to play music (other than streaming).
So, anyone have any ideas.
Thanks.
Open music player by touching widget. Touch the arrow by now playing and open up my music. Select songs from the dropdown and start playing them. It will start connecting to that folder.

Thanks for your reply, but unfortunately that only works on music that I downloaded from the internet to the phone, it still doesn't show anything for the stuff that I transferred from my PC.
That is strange. I transfer music from my external drive all the time. Always works for me. Have you tried restarting your phone after putting songs in the music folders?

Yeah, several times. Question: is there any options during the rom install that I might have opted out on that are media related?
I only remove the social media and a few others like drop box, printer etc. I'm sure certain things would effect the way music player functions.

Look for any .nomedia on sd card and erase, next go to app mgr and delete data /erase cache for music /gallery and anything related manually. Reboot in recovery wipe dav and cache , good to go now

I just figured since the OP said as a last resort they would reflash the ROM I would TRY and provide an option which doesn't require them to do this.
I experienced the same issue and a dirty flash didn't fix it and I didn't have the time to wipe and reflash at the time and this was able to get my music up and running in a couple of minutes.

in his first post he says that app didnt work for him-_-
Thanks everybody for your input. I pretty much figured out what the problem is (sort of). It seems that music files transferred over the network using ES File Explorer aren't seen by the music apps. I transferred the same files via usb and even Airdroid and those all seem to work fine. At least I can play my music on my phone now, but it's unfortunate that I can't use ES File explorer, because I really liked how convenient it was.
