Now that samsung has released the kernel source for Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S2, can we expect a build for the Infuse 4G?
Im looking forward to input from Dman. That may be helpful if the Infuse and S2 share similar hardware specs. That would be awesome!!
Sorry to break bubbles, thy have nothing almost in commen. Gs2 has newer specs, only the screen is the same. Unhelpful. And btw, please look around, theres a whole thread on ics i started in general, and we are gathering devs because dman is moved on, and would not build ics for the infuse anyway.

I'm interested in contributing.. but I'm new to custom ROM development. With a little help I can get started.
What we need is for someone to port the kernel from SGS (Captivate, i9000, Vibrant).... ICSSGS kernel would be a great place to start. Another option would be to use the Galaxy Tab 7.0 as a starting place.
If the kernel won't boot, hook up UART and it will tell you where the kernel stops booting.
I can't work on this myself. I am very busy on several devices.

Am I the only one thinking/hoping that we are getting Ice Cream Sandwich??? I mean it releases on October 11124 and we still don't have gingerbread you know? This is just hopeful thinking... it would be nice to have the absolute latest OS and features though

Doubt it. We'll probably get Ginger in a week or two and come next year sometime, we'll get icecream.maybe.

Nah... ATT is just slow.
Thumb rule: We are always a release behind
I don't mean to be pessimistic but that sounds very unlikely.
Maybe in the long run, but even that seems unlikely since new phones are coming out all the time.
Also, Samsung hasn't expressed much love for the Infuse so I doubt they would spend much time making an official ICS ROM for it.

Chances of ICS on the Infuse - extremely slim.
They're pretty good for the GSII though.
Just hope for a leak.

I read a lot of places, sorry i do not have the links, that once they have it, it should work with anything, just the software mods itself when it is installed on the phone/tablet/computer (if they make any). It sounds pretty out there, but it is nice to dream. If it would work, then the only updates that the phones would need from the carriers/manufacturers are the modems and kernels.
I would say yes way down the line but the sgs2 is gonna get all the love

im probably wrong, but im for sure i read somewhere saying that ICS was gunna be an operating system that was like for all android phones? what i mean is that ICS is gunna be one platform for all android phones like iOS for the iphone. idk
Who cares..., am I the only one who thinks that AAAALLLLL the OS's look the freaking Sam with a different number? Its like with my infuse when we went from froyo to "gingerbread" the only real advantage I noticed was a couple of features added, like tthe FRONT facing camera working with Skype, and other silly stuff like that. For instance, MIUI is a whole new beast on its own but speed dial option is eluding me lol
I guess I'm more or less rudely asking for a bonus feature list from ICS.

The Infuse is the new Optimus, aka poor mans smart phone. I had a customer tell me today he wouldnt give 2 squirts of piss for the Infuse, that pretty much sums it up.

"all" in the generic sense - instead of having 2.x for phones and 3.x for tablets, 4.0 will support both phones and tablets.
However, every device that Android runs on needs customizations specific to the hardware. In many cases, those hardware drivers/libraries are closed source so it's not easy to port them unless the manufacturer does.
"all" in this case means a manufacturer can do a device bringup of 4.x on a tablet or a phone. But someone still needs to do the device bringup, and on a device with lots of closed-source proprietary bits, device bringup can be difficult if not impossible. Look at the state of CM7 for example - it didn't really get off the ground until Rogers released Gingerbread because the Froyo libraries weren't compatible with Gingerbread, and even with the Rogers proprietary bits, some things still don't work.
If it comes to the Infuse it won't be before May. Probably closer to a year from now.
The joys of fragmentation.

Patience...it's coming
Alot of people don't really understand the process of releasing an OS update for an android. From what I can gather, Google releases the OS to the manufacturers which then tailor it to the individual phones. Then they release it to the providers (AT&T, Sprint etc.) which tailor it to their network and pollute it with bloatware. When they're sure it's somewhat error free, they release it to us.
AT&T for example, is frantically trying to finish their version, but they obviously have an issue or two...or twenty...who knows. They have to finish it, compile it, then do test updates, then test the updates and pray it worked. It takes time. I am far from patient so I already installed the GB 2.3.5 leak and can honestly say it's a major improvement. Bluetooth works better, everything is faster, and those annoying lags whenever you do a level 2 memory clear or detach the USB are fixed. But the leak has its issues, so I'm giving AT&T the benefit of the doubt and waiting to see if the mid October release actually happens. But since they lied and failed to deliver in September, I'm not holding my breath.
As far as ICS is concerned, I doubt AT&T has even had a chance to look at it yet. I would be amazed if we saw it this time next year. But we will get it. LOTS of people have the Infuse so it's not going to be left out or treated like a forgotten step-child like some people claim. It's a great phone with one of the nicest, biggest displays you can get, and it runs anything you throw at it even with its single core processor. What makes the Infuse bad is forcing it to run on AT&T.
The AT&T SG2 had CM7 and MiUi roms basically on launch day I've notice roms seem to be coming slow on the skyrocket.
Is this because of the different chipsets, Dev Interest, or something else compared to SG2?
(This isn't me complaining I'm just curious , I also noticed no CM7 roms for T-Mobile SG2)

The galaxy s2 lte is the international version of the skyrocket, but the issue is it released at around the same time and is not near as popular as the original gs2.
Our phones are very similar to the tmo GS2, so once they get a cm7 port the skyrocket version shouldn't be far behind.
You should not stick with this phone if you are hoping for a ton of dev support. Frankly, we're lucky to have what we have right now (thanks guys!). This is a one off phone and as such, it's more difficult to port stuff over to it. I consider it highly unlikely that we'll see any Cyanogen or MiUi love on this phone unless portability some how gets easier with ICS.
I'm not huge on installing ROM's just to play with them. I come here more for problem solving on stock + root configs, so this isn't a big deal for me. But I can understand why it's a big turn off to some people.
The ROMS for the Infuse came fairly quickly after the phone was available. Subsequent cooked ROMs then started becoming more stable just about 3-4 months after. Of course, it all depends on the availability of dev support for the SR and hopefully they are coming onboard soon enough.
Then again, if you want *more* than a few ROMs to choose from, then the 'regular' sgs2 may be more up your alley.
I NEED MY STOCK ANDROID BACK... touch wiz is pretty but i went from g1 to n1 to skyrocket and i miss some things
A second line is coming up for upgrade (for the wife) and I have thought about getting/trying out the skyrocket as I have the original att SGS2 and love the rom and dev support. Already testing out the international versions alpha build of ice cream sandwich. But for the wife's phone I don't think I want to mess with it as much though. But it DOES boil down to dev support and roms I guess. Is it really this slow in here? I love my OG SGS2 and even though we will have lte in my area by years end I wont be giving up mine for anything. I got my OG SGS2 two days after launch and at first was excited by the lte version until it was confirmed to have the snapdragon and not the exerynos. So I was glad I stayed.
So my question is has any well known devs jumped into the skyrocket arena yet? The dev section looks kind of lonely right now. I have a month to decide whether to get her a OG SGS2 or the skyrocket so I am in no rush. I saw all the threads and have followed the skyrocket until it was moved out of our sub forum, so I have read all the debates and arguing about the differences between the OG and skyrocket. Haven't been in here for a few weeks now and it looks almost the exact same developer section wise. Other than being rooted have you guys seen any spectacular advancements as we have seen in the OG SGS2? I am NOT in here trolling but just wanted to get all your inputs as well. Are you still glad you went with the skyrocket? Are you glad you didn't just take it back and get a OG SGS2? I know with lte you guys get kick ass download speeds, and in my OG I get 8Mb download and haven't had any issues streaming anything, downloading anything, or visiting any web pages. So is it worth it in your eyes for me to get the skyrocket for the wife? PLEASE only real answers, I am not here for flaming wars or "my device is better because" replies, I am not trying to stir up the emotions I have seen between the two in the past. So again please just your honest and as possible unbiased opinions. Thanks
PS.I posted this here because I run CM7 on my OG SGS2. Not sure if I could give it up though touchwiz on our (both) att SGS's gets the job done. Plus with testing out alpha builds of ICS we are in for a WHOLE change of goodness as long as the ASOP build looks and feels. Unless samsung or att don't ruin it that is.

I would certainly love to see CM7 support for this device. i think it would be tremendous oversight for it to get swept under the table and miss out on CM7.1 + CM9.
I do not see it happening .. i believe it will show up sooner or later.
Patiently holding out on purchasing "ics device." just to "have an ics ROM."
people the phone came out a month ago! i was on the SGSII forum, and we didn't have CM support immediately, it took time patience and DONTATIONS! if no one is donating, please quit crying!! You can always return the device. It is not a good look for those of in the community (irc.irondust.net; #skyrocket) that are either attempting to be a part of the solution. Da_G is looking into a port now. Furthermore, Samsung was sent an email re the release of the source code.

Okay, so we all know the likes of getting ports to the Infuse are super low. As of right now, our devs stick to Samsung based roms and modding them. Which is pretty cool. I'm not that intelligent in the rom making world so go easy on me plz, if this turns out to be a stupid question. Also, while I'm at it. Does anyone know any good SGS2 roms for the Infuse??

I've been following, off and on, the struggle Entropy and other devs have been having with Samsung to ensure clearer documentation and accurate source files. It seems like Samsung may have opened up a little with their Insignal repositories. What I'd like to know - and haven't been able to discover - is if Samsung has already (or intends to) release the same for Exynos 3 (hummingbird). The source up on their regular opensource site is clearly not complete. Also, have Samsung opened up enough that Cyanogenmod will continue developing for Samsung devices?
I have a few reasons for asking. One is that I have another year on my contract with the Infuse and feel pretty annoyed that Gingerbread is as high as they'll go (my fault, but before this, I really had no concept of how primitive Gingerbread is). I'm happy that development has lived on here on xda, but I'd like to have a properly working camera. I don't think that's going to happen until Samsung open up.
The other reason is that, having read all Entropy has had to say on the matter, I won't buy another Samsung phone for me or family members until I know development can continue beyond AT&T and Samsung's arbitrary schedules.

I know! Afterlife development is what Android has going for it over iOS (IMHO). I guess Moto, Samsung, HTC, etc - just like every freaking retailer in America - really want everyone to buy into iOS? Had I opted for an iPhone 3GS, I'd still be eligible to upgrade to iOS 6. & I would have been able to copy and paste a tracking number the day I booted up my phone! LOL! Now, do I want a walled garden to enclose all my other walled gardens? Or do I want a walled garden with a gate?

I'm not sure why you ask. Yes, is the answer, but I don't know what that has to do with the topic. The camera doesn't work properly on JB and I don't think it will until either a) a developer with particular expertise in digital recording has time to spare or b) Samsung releases the source. I've tinkered enough with the source to know more or less what the main problem is, but where it is and how to solve it is well beyond me. There are other little problems too, but they may not be important in the long run.
I often wondered why Entropy called the Infuse, the Confuse. When I started rifling though the source, I found out: the Infuse is a Frankenphone.
I wasn't thinking of the video recording functionality w/ regards to the camera. Apart from that, it all works quite well for me. I haven't tried the 4.2 AOSP based ROMs so I don't know about the video recording functionality of that. I highly doubt Samsung is interested in furthering the development of the infuse as its getting pretty old.
