Upgrade/Downgrade Kernels - Defy Android Development

People who are stuck with 4.5.1-134_DFP-13XX Kernels and or any BL6 SBFs may now freely switch between any kernels they require.
Say for example, to upgrade to Walter's fixed SBF of 4.5.3_109 Kernel from 4.5.1-134_DFP-13XX, do the following.
1. Flash Defy-BL6Downgrade-CDT.sbf through RSD Lite.
2. Flash walter's 4.5.3_109 kernel sbf right away after that or an update zip package if you have a functional recovery. (Actually, you may flash any kernel. Even Froyo kernels)
You're done.
Wipe data/cache in case you get stuck at boot. No more bootloader errors.
This is based on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486731
Credits go to dlhxr.
Note: If you have an SBF which you want to flash after this, just the BL6Downgrade-CDT.sbf is enough.
If you want to get into a custom recovery (only if you already have it), then you have to flash BL6Downgrade.SBF, or you will end up with a Bootloader ERR screen.

I haven't tested it with BL7. Could you check if it works?
PS: I was previously stuck with 134-DFP-1321.
Now on 4.5.3_109-25.

It cannot work with BL7,
because it is bl=6 2.2 Froyo SBF。
after you flash the SBF you can flash any BL>=4 kernel.
I just try it yesterday, so great.

So, i will try this.
I want so much use the MIUI on my Defy+
I can downgrade it using this method?

Hey guys,
I tried the steps mentioned above.
I had the 4.5.1-134-DFP-231 on my Defy+ and wasn't able to root it.
So I downloaded the Defy-BL6Downgrade.sbf and the 4.5.2-109-DHT-22-fixed.sbf and flashed them in this order with RSD Lite 4.9
Now my screen stays completely black. But it seems to enter the boot loader as RSD Lite shows the device as "connected..."
When I flash again, the screen turns on and shows "SW Update In progress".
But still no screen...
Any help on that?

For now only what you can do is reflash it with DFP-231 to make it working and waiting for root like everyone with BL7.
Defy Plus 4.5.1-134 DFP-231 CEE

So we could say this is the ultimate setup for those with Obsessive-ROM Updating Disorder? So we can move freely between froyo and gb without flashing full sbf every time?

I can go to Froyo with flash this downgrade fix?

Really ? Froyo kernel on a BL6 ?

Updated: Only flashing the CDT is enough to switch to another ROM. But that works only if you can flash another SBF, as the Bootloader with ERR would be shown right after.
In case you're planning to flash through recovery flash the one with the entire kernel. The BL6Downgrade.sbf [34MB] file. Or if you have an sbf of the next kernel you want to flash, then flashing just the BL6Downgrade-CDT is enough.

i think you can flash only android 2.2.2 and above ... i'll try later and leave some feedback

Is there battery friendly froyo kernel similar to Walter GB kernel 4.5.2-109dht22 which can be used with cm7 on froyo builds.

ME525? Will this rom kill the flashlight?
the reason why the flashlight didn't work is mostly because the dev tree was not flashed properly. it's not the rom that kills the flashlight...

I am up for it, where should I download it?
don't tell me I have to install bunch of trogen before I can download.
i think that's an encrypted link and password is required.

i created a system.img out of cg39.smg, flashed it and that's it. you dont need a devtree or boot if you are already on 3.4.x
everything works properly, including flash which did not work with 0.26.0

Kernel downgrade method for EU/BR/AR Gingerbread (only for BL=3)

First, you must have version 3 BL. As I known, all EU gb have version 3 and BR/AR gb (except for persona&vivo, which is 4) too. Or you can use this tool(attachment) to check the version of CG31 in the sbf you have flashed.
After you confirm you have v3 BL,download this downgrade sbf from attachment and use RSD to flash it to your phone.Once you have done, you will have the new chinese 45.1.5 gb kernel(your BL is still 3,because this version can never be downgraded).Note! If you just want to use MIUI/CM7 based on froyo kernel, the downgrade job is already done here and you don't need to do the following steps. What you need to is just following the installation tuturial of MIUI/CM7).
Because the bootloader also check version of /system(CG39).so the original steps would not work.
Now,you already have the ability to flash the lower version sbf or said BL=2 sbf generally. But the sbf itself need to modified a bit. Download MotoAndroidDepacker from attachment and follow the following step:
1.open MotoAndroidDepacker
2.click "Open from file" and select the sbf
3.click "Split to folder" and wait for it to finish
4.open the created folder and delete CG31.smg
5.back to MotoAndroidDepacker
6.click "Open files folder" and select the created folder
7.click "Compile file" and wait for it to finish
8.now,you will get a firmware.sbf in the created folder
Now you can use RSD to flash this sbf and get a clean and complete ROM,which could be official froyo or Chinese old gingerbread 45.1.3.
New method:
1.read the steps above and know how to edit sbf
2.find an nandroid backup of froyo system
3.restore it via clockwork recovery
4.open an froyo sbf and remove CG31/CG39 and repack it
5.flash it via RSD
6.reboot your phone
Now you will go back to froyo again.
Why it works:
Recently, China Moto release a new sbf for milestone2: 2.3.4-4.5.3-109_MS2-5-111219
password: bbs.dkdiy.net
the CG31/BL version of this sbf is also 3 but the key point is this new CG31/BL also contains signatures for older kernels( all froyo kernels&chinese gingerbread kernels ). If you don't want to download the whole sbf, the cg31,also cg35/61 are contained in the downgrade sbf.
I'm sure this would be a pleasant piece of news for those who are stuck with GB. Thanks endless7.

Thanks man!! Will give it a shot. I have been craving for CH GB kernel with no multitouch bug.
Edit: As you said, that those who want to install MIUI etc etc. can just flash those ROMs after using the downgrade sbf, so I'm guessing that once I flash the downgrade sbf I should be able to flash the CH GB kernel (only the kernel if I have a flashable zip of it) as well. Am I right in assuming that?
Edit2: Cool, it works. I'm on CH GB kernel now.

I used an SBF file of CH GB kernel after flashing the downgrade sbf from first post. If any one wants to try this method, here is the sbf attached.
This is what I did. I was on European GB kernel.
1. Boot into bootloader mode.
1. flash the downgrade sbf from first post (RSDLite).
2. System boots.
3. Again, boot into bootloader, flash the sbf (CH GB kernel) attached. (RSDLite)
4. System booted and done!
I haven't tried flashing a froyo build on it as of now. But my kernel shows version [email protected]# 1.
I have. I'm back on CM7 now, I was using the BR retail GB rom. Just flashed the downgrade sbf, wiped data and flashed the CM7 zip. Worked like a charm.
Endless7 you are the man! (Here in Argentina means SOS VOS!)
Thanks a lot man, i want cm7 again, and i have it now!
Thanks good luck
It's working, tks Endless7!

- you may have to open the zip and edit the xml, and delete the 2 lines "<step operation="getvar" var="max-download-size" />" if you get unknown command fastboot getvar max-download-size
- do not flash Sprint firmware to phone from Cellular US and vice versa unless you know what are you doing!!!

I still had to remove the getvar commands from the .xml but phone took the flash finally! It's activating now. Thanks again Skrillax for this, hoping this firmware is more stable than the first update.:good:

Anyone mind giving the cliff notes on *how* to fastboot the files manually? Will it work on stock recovery?
Added Sprint US 7.7.1Q-6_SPR-125_ASA-14.
Re: [01-23-2013]Photon Q FXZ
Does this restore stock recovery as well? If so it's definitely easier than restoring a stock nandroid and recovery.img and taking the ota update. My understanding is the latest fxz is stock asa14?

Yes, it is fully stock and independant on the current device state, so you can flash it, then flash recovery and then nandroid. You just might need to remove the "get var" fastboot commands from the xml in order to get it flashed.
Re: [01-23-2013]Photon Q FXZ
So this is similar to an SBF file where it restores your phone to stock if you want to start over new? Would it be wise to wipe everything before using it? (After a backup of course)

just a heads up to others i Flashed this one instead of doing the OTA and then i tried to flash one of the older versions and RSD Lite lite failed. on the phone fastboot screen said error firmware was not downgradeable
this helped me to unbrick mine after ota update.
thanks, fixed it with RSD lite latest version, and flasing worked good
I broke my device. Thanks for this so I can fix it maybe.

so this means there is some kind of bootloader lock on downgrading from the latest firmware? maybe they did that so people can't go back and use Motofail2go or something? is your bootloader unlocked by the official method?
Does it matter which firmware you flash or does it have to be the one that was on the phone before? Got a failure message in RSD lite and im not sure if it was cuz of low device battery or wrong version. My phone was bought new and bricked on the December firmware, whichever that was.
If you have low battery, discharge it completely, then plug to charger and leave it be, so it doesn't try to boot when plugged in to the charger.
If you get failure message in RSD lite, read it
But you can just flash latest FW.
Sorry Im really hung over today didnt mean to geek out. Didnt realize I already posted here! Is flashing with RSD lite really as easy as it seems to unbrick a phone?
I honestly don't recall whether Photon Q charges in fastboot when connected via USB. However, if you leave it in fastboot until it discharges completely, and then plug it to a wall charger (!and leave it there be), it will start charging in "emergency mode" i.e without booting.
Does NOT charge in FastBoot mode. Might overheat if left in recovery after restore.
I just wanted to follow up and say this was a shockingly easy method of restoring a bricked device. Just 3 easy steps.

[Q] Starts to Fastboot - Flashing Fails

Before I tell you my problem I'm going to outline the process I went through to get too it.
1) I upgraded my 2.3.6 Atrix 2 to ICS 4.0.4 on the Telecom NZ OTA update.
2) I attempted to flash my device to the Asian Atrix 2 Jelly Bean leak
3) Flash failed in process 1/14
My phone now boots to fast boot, however I can still start my phone by entering the recovery menu and selecting boot up normally (or whatever it is, I forgot the exact words)
Telecom NZ users seem to all have this problem when trying to to do this. How can I fix it so it doesn't start to fastboot?
Also what happens if my battery dies in fast boot mode?
Thanks William

As above ^ How I fixed this problem:
Download 6.7.2_EDEM-18-MEARET from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934874
Flash it with the script from this post:

С-spire stuck on boot logo-restarts-stuck on boot...

Hi guys. Not so long ago cspire PhQ came to my hands.
Bootloader locked.
Trying to power on - stuck on moto logo, then restarts and everything is repeated.
Tried to flash stock ICS and JB roms.
When flashing ICS phone does not like boot.img (says - No Downgrades).
When flashing JB fully , on the last rebooting it starts doing the same thing, so nothing changes....
Sprint stock roms do not even start flashing. On sbl1 - flashing failed.
Any suggestions guys?
You are using the RSD Lite application to flash the FXZ files I assume?
If yes, you should NOT grab the Sprint FXZ's... It states that pretty clearly in the OP.
For a proper downgrade, you have to remove some additional lines.
For the JB flash, that is odd - which version of RSD are you using?

I use RSD Lite to flash whole stock roms from here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/asanti_c/list.php
RSD version 6.15
getvat + gpt strings were removed of course.
what else could help?
If there were no error messages when done. There might be hardware problems.
