Kernel downgrade method for EU/BR/AR Gingerbread (only for BL=3) - Milestone 2 Android Development

First, you must have version 3 BL. As I known, all EU gb have version 3 and BR/AR gb (except for persona&vivo, which is 4) too. Or you can use this tool(attachment) to check the version of CG31 in the sbf you have flashed.
After you confirm you have v3 BL,download this downgrade sbf from attachment and use RSD to flash it to your phone.Once you have done, you will have the new chinese 45.1.5 gb kernel(your BL is still 3,because this version can never be downgraded).Note! If you just want to use MIUI/CM7 based on froyo kernel, the downgrade job is already done here and you don't need to do the following steps. What you need to is just following the installation tuturial of MIUI/CM7).
Because the bootloader also check version of /system(CG39).so the original steps would not work.
Now,you already have the ability to flash the lower version sbf or said BL=2 sbf generally. But the sbf itself need to modified a bit. Download MotoAndroidDepacker from attachment and follow the following step:
1.open MotoAndroidDepacker
2.click "Open from file" and select the sbf
3.click "Split to folder" and wait for it to finish
4.open the created folder and delete CG31.smg
5.back to MotoAndroidDepacker
6.click "Open files folder" and select the created folder
7.click "Compile file" and wait for it to finish
8.now,you will get a firmware.sbf in the created folder
Now you can use RSD to flash this sbf and get a clean and complete ROM,which could be official froyo or Chinese old gingerbread 45.1.3.
New method:
1.read the steps above and know how to edit sbf
2.find an nandroid backup of froyo system
3.restore it via clockwork recovery
4.open an froyo sbf and remove CG31/CG39 and repack it
5.flash it via RSD
6.reboot your phone
Now you will go back to froyo again.
Why it works:
Recently, China Moto release a new sbf for milestone2: 2.3.4-4.5.3-109_MS2-5-111219
password: bbs.dkdiy.net
the CG31/BL version of this sbf is also 3 but the key point is this new CG31/BL also contains signatures for older kernels( all froyo kernels&chinese gingerbread kernels ). If you don't want to download the whole sbf, the cg31,also cg35/61 are contained in the downgrade sbf.

I'm sure this would be a pleasant piece of news for those who are stuck with GB. Thanks endless7.

Thanks man!! Will give it a shot. I have been craving for CH GB kernel with no multitouch bug.
Edit: As you said, that those who want to install MIUI etc etc. can just flash those ROMs after using the downgrade sbf, so I'm guessing that once I flash the downgrade sbf I should be able to flash the CH GB kernel (only the kernel if I have a flashable zip of it) as well. Am I right in assuming that?
Edit2: Cool, it works. I'm on CH GB kernel now.

Thread updated for new method. the old one is not working.

Hi,
Can someone put this file on a non chinese site ?
I'dont understand Chinese, and Google doesn't too...
EDIT : Ok... said something stupid.. The downgrade SBF is not on the chinese site... must learn to read before posting...

I used an SBF file of CH GB kernel after flashing the downgrade sbf from first post. If any one wants to try this method, here is the sbf attached.
This is what I did. I was on European GB kernel.
1. Boot into bootloader mode.
1. flash the downgrade sbf from first post (RSDLite).
2. System boots.
3. Again, boot into bootloader, flash the sbf (CH GB kernel) attached. (RSDLite)
4. System booted and done!
I haven't tried flashing a froyo build on it as of now. But my kernel shows version [email protected]# 1.

I have. I'm back on CM7 now, I was using the BR retail GB rom. Just flashed the downgrade sbf, wiped data and flashed the CM7 zip. Worked like a charm.

Endless7 you are the man! (Here in Argentina means SOS VOS!)
Thanks a lot man, i want cm7 again, and i have it now!
Thanks good luck

It's working, tks Endless7!

Work`s like a charm.

ME525? Will this rom kill the flashlight?
the reason why the flashlight didn't work is mostly because the dev tree was not flashed properly. it's not the rom that kills the flashlight...

I am up for it, where should I download it?
don't tell me I have to install bunch of trogen before I can download.
i think that's an encrypted link and password is required.

[Q] Want to Flash Back to Stock: SBF Question

It seems that Motorola is very close to releasing GB for our D2G's, so I want to flash back to stock to be part of the soak/launch. When I originally rooted this phone, I saved all the files needed to root/unroot/flashback, but just want to confirm that DROID2WE_X6_2.4.29_FULL.sbf is the correct file. I have seen some 2.4.3 versions, but I think I have the right file.
Can anyone confirm, please?
Thanks!
Once you restore 2.4.29 you must OTA update it to 2.4.330 for the soak test.
...or download the 2.4.330 OTA .zip file and install it via stock recovery.

Well, there you go. You'll need to rename it to “update.zip”, place it in your SD card's root directory, boot into the stock recovery and choose the option to install sdcard:update.zip.
There is also SBF available that can flash you up to the required 2.4.330 without having to apply the Dec 2010 OTA. Just one step less to do plus saves some time, if you haven't already done it.

Nevermind, turns out I don't need it anymore. I hunted around a bit and found a thread over at droidforums.net that links to the official 2.4.330 SBF with RSDLite and Moto driver downloads, and a suuuper helpful tutorial. I followed each step and SBF'd to stock without a problem!

I am trying to find a way to get gingerbread work with cellzeolot's hack...
As it has been stated quite a few times, both 2.4.330 and 4.5.x update the baseband firmware.
Band unlock won't work on those versions.
You cannot skip baseband update.

[Q] Need Stock Rom 2.3.6 For Motorola Atrix 2 ME865 [SBF File]

hi
i need stock rom 2.3.6 for motorola atrix2 me865 [sbf file] for flashing with rsd
tnx
I don't believe we have a FXZ available yet to flash directly to 2.3.6.
Look at the guides on how to flash back to 2.3.5 from 2.3.6. You should then be able to update.
edit: the specific guides I was thinking of here are inapplicable to the ME865
my phone can't boot
i can not flash costum rom & zip file with CWM
i need a rom with sbf format (ME865) for flashing rsd
sorry i don't write english good
You can find certain ME865 FXZ files from the nice Chinese folks over at bbs.gfan.com, but I would make sure to only flash the fxz for your own region.
It may be the fxz file for your region is not available yet... I'm not sure where you are.
FXZ (fastboot-xml-zip) files are the newer equivalent of SBF.
If it's anything like the american MB865's updates, you might have to replace certain files in the fxz and update the XML file with the MD5 hash.
The replacement files would need to come from the update package itself.
(the zip file downloaded from Motorola's servers and stored in the /cache directory until the update finishes and it's promptly deleted forever...)
tnx
can i use this method?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1539167
Unfortunately that's for the American MB865.
I've heard of some people flashing the ME865 with american roms, but I would not recommend flashing the full MB865 fxz to your ME865 as this method does.
---------- Post added at 11:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:35 PM ----------
Forgot about mfunz...
i have a backup file from stock rom 2.3.6 . but i can't restore with CWM
That's good.
Depending on what's preventing it from booting up, you might be able to flash just the system image from another me865 fxz, then restore your stock system image once you're able to boot to kick off cwm.
This can be done through moto-fastboot, or with rsd lite- removing extraneous steps from the xml file to skip everything except /system
This all depends on how your phone is actually bricked...
Sometimes seemingly softbricked phones can still be booted with a "normal boot" from the VolumeUp+VolDown boot menu or alternatively BP Tools
can i flash CWM with fastboot or rsd ?
and then restore the backup ?

Not quite sure. It looks like you've already tried restoring the cwm backup, which caused the issue?
What exactly is your phone doing when you power it up?
To use moto-fastboot to flash only the system image, download an ME865 FXZ, put the system.img file from the fxz into the same directory you extracted moto-fastboot, then from that directory in a command line (with your phone booted into fastboot and connected via usb) run
Code:
moto-fastboot flash system system.img
This will restore only the system directory, leaving everything else alone.

No problem. Just go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650 and read the section on how to flash the FXZ. make sure to look at the bottom part where it tells you to replace some files. you will need to do that. How to flash the FXZ once applying the OTA update and get back to 2.3.5, ONCE YOU UPDATE TO THE OTS 2.3.6 YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FLASH THE 2.3.5 FXZ WITHOUT FOLLOWING THESE STEPS BELOW!!
NOTE: Download this file HERE -
Unzip it and move all the the items in it to the stock fxz. You might get a warning about replacing files, just click OK. NOTE that Windows might not be able to handle the size of the fxz. I have 6 GB RAM but Windows still wasn't able to perform a drag-and-drop through the fxz's zip. I recommend that you just unzip the fxz and then put the files in. (You don't have to rezip it either, RSD Lite will still recognize it and will flash faster).
You should be able to use RSD Lite to flash the file.

No problem. Just go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650 and read the section on how to flash the FXZ. make sure to look at the bottom part where it tells you to replace some files. you will need to do that. Instead of using the ATT FXZ file like they say use the one that matches your current version (SEARET I think you said) and follow the same directions, but use that file instead.

Yeah, I was being stupid. Was the phone originally ATT when you bought it, or was it indian. that makes a big difference. you need to know what it said under settings > about phone.
anyways this should fix it, just use which ever fxz is right (from my post in the noob thread:
just thought of an easier way to get you restored. Most of the time you only really need to do system. download the moto-fastboot utility (it's similar to normal fastboot but you MUST use it instead or it will not work) and the fxz for your region. Extract the fxz and put the system.img from it and moto-fastboot in the same folder. open a command prompt in that folder (hold shift and right click) and type
Code:
moto-fastboot.exe flash system system.img
moto-fastboot.exe erase userdata
obviously you need to have your phone in fastboot mode to do that. it does the exact same thing as rsd, just only the 2 important steps, flashing system and wiping data.)
Let me know how that works for you. It may not since you have had flash failures, but we'll see.
moto-fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=635584&d=1308928440 you should actually extract it and put all the things in it in the folder with system.img
Good luck!

Flashed my atrix 2 and fastboot fail
I bought my atrix 2 from US and unlocked it and am using this in india now. I tried to flashboot the phone with "5.5.1-EDEM-28-37-SEARET_cfc.xml". I added the new files thats available in the noob called replace.zip. I also tried the moto fast boot. Now am not able to flashboot and when i run flashboot i get this error "failed flashing process. 11/21 flash ebr "ebr"-> Phone returned fail; Phone connected" .
Please help me.
I just got my ATT Atrix 2 and I think I've already bricked it, soft at least. I used a script to go from 2.3.6 back to 2.3.5 stock, then OTA to 2.3.6, then I flashed the ICS leak and flashed SCV7, it was running horribly, kept crashing and was being extremely unstable so then I tried to use the FXZ script to go from ICS back to GB, and all my phone was doing was showing the Motorola dual core screen and boot looping or just staying on that screen I couldn't tell. I can get into fastboot, when I try to get into recovery there is an icon of a box with an arrow coming out of it and a little android and a yellow progress bar and when that finishes it goes to fastboot and it says "AP FastBoot Flash Mode (S) (Flash Failure) what can I do?
---------- Post added at 07:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:55 PM ----------
The battery is low going by my luck I'm going to assume the phone will not charge while in fast boot. I've been at this for way too many hours, if someone could tell me how to get this phone working I'd appreciate it.

[Q] Upgrade to Jellybean

I'm rooted with the stock ROM, and my bootloader is unlocked using the Motorola website.
What's the easiest and effective way to upgrade to the newest (Jellybean) OTA update?
Also, I forgot I had rooted because I installed the OTA and tried to apply it but of course it failed.
Now when I start my phone up...it will load then a couple seconds later, it shuts down and boots into CWM.
What can I do?
Easiest way at this point is probably to use RSD Lite and wipe the phone with one of the FXZ's.
Then wait for the OTA and flash it.
You can't flash OTA's on aftermarket recoveries. You have to be on stock recovery to take the OTA......
Edit - link for reference.

Is there any chance you could explain the RSD steps? I'm having the same problem, unlocked through Moto's site and now entering bootloop when I try to do OTA upgrade.

Do you have RSD Lite? What step are you getting stuck on?
It's pretty straightforward IMHO. The only "wrinkle" is having to edit the .XML files - which is noted int he first post.

Well I wouldn't recommend any cspire FXZ unless you're on cspire...
You're on Sprint right? I'd grab the latest Sprint FXZ, which is currently:
asanti_c-user-4.0.4-7.7.1Q-6_SPR-125_ASA-14-15-release-keys-Sprint-US.xml.zip
Hopefully the Sprint FXZ for JB will land, and people can just flash straight to it

Thanks a bunch. I'm gonna go ahead and download that. It would make my life so much easier if the Sprint one was availble, but it's not so now gotta go back to stock.
When using RSD lite i just connect my phone as USB Mass storage, edit the XML file, and then load it into RSD and hit start?

Yea, RSD should reboot your phone into fastboot mode and start flashing.
If it doesn't, you might have to enable adb... I can't remember as I always have adb setup/enabled

don't start adb from a command prompt. RDS will take care of that. USB debugging must be enabled on your phone in developer options.

can someone please post a stock jellybean rom for use with TWRP or a flashable zip for CWM? I have been trying for hours to get JB ota, and soft bricked along the way. I read everything on xda tried RSD Lite, and this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001108 but still cant ota.

Flash ASA-14 from the FXZ's, then force check for a system update.
Looks like the FXZ for Sprint's 4.1.2 is released. Just use RSD lite and flash straight to it.
Thanks Skrilax_CZ.

I think once you get ADB to recognize the phone, RSD will as well.

Got it. Trying OTA Update now. Thanks!
Great link skillrax.
RSD l ite is really easy. You need to have fastboot installed on the PC/phone and you need to enable debugging. Then its as easy as 3 steps. Find the file, choose flash. Forget the 3rd step.... Its really easy.

Yea, I don't know what the heck I was thinking earlier... RSD uses fastboot, so you will need adb/fastboot working in order to utilize RSD.
Other than editing that XML file and getting fastboot working, RSD is quite simple to use
Hey y'all. I was going to go back to one of my early backups on the stock ICS and then take the OTA JB update but my backup from January keeps loading my most recent twisted asanti backup instead. Needless to say, my JB update keeps failing saying signature verification failed. Any quick fix or should I just push it via RSD at work tomorrow?
TIA

Thank you for alerting me to the new FXZ. It wasn't there when i checked yesterday. This new one did the job for me. I have backed it up using TWRP and I am uploading to my server for download, but I can't post external links yet.
Okay:
- I have /sdk-tools/ in my c:/ drive.
- I downloaded the Jellybean file
- I downloaded RSDlite and edited the xml file
My device doesnt show in RSD or anything.
Now what?

Sounds like you don't have the drivers. Go to motorola.com and make sure you have the latest / correct drivers. RSD is a moto program so with Moto drivers and RSD lite you should have no problem. You also need to have fastboot on both your phone and the computer.
Then you may need an xml editor to remove those files (I have to every time) and after that its really easy.
Open RSD Lite
Connect Phone
Select File
Decompress and Flash
RSD Instructions: http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/How_to_flash_with_RSD_lite
