Ns4g ---> skyrocket - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Ok i am coming from NS4G to the skyrocket. Noticed alot of differences. However nothing too hard to overcome. Someone tell me the latest stock us build? Also is there a file that has the names of the partitions like /proc/mtd?

How come both were pulled? What was each update supposed to be fixing/doing?

1st update brought the firmware from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6
2nd update brought new radio w/ better reception and fixes the battery meter sticking issue and bluetooth (can't confirm but so far so good).

If you read around you'll find a couple of explanations. The "official" reason the first update (KK1) was pulled was that it was only for certain phones (based on IMEI number), and was not available to everyone. To me it seemed like it was available to everyone at the time so I speculated that there was an issue with the build.
And I never saw an "official" version for the LA3 being pulled, but many speculated that it was for people who didn't receive the KK1 update.
Personally, I just think AT&T sucks at doing OTA updates and their systems get overloaded with people trying to update. I don't find it a coincidence that on the day the LA3 update came out that there was a massive outage in my area for 1-2 hours. People all over my wife's facebook page (I hate fb, don't use it) were complaining that they couldn't make calls or send messages for a couple hours.

I never had an issue getting the UCLA3 update. Initially, I had an issue when trying to go over the air, but once I was on a wifi, it was working. Don't know if it's coincidence, but that's what I did when it was available.
I'm still waiting anxiously for ICS, but hold no faith that it'll be in a timely manner. I came to the Skyrocket from the Infuze because, well, they never could get a GB official release (and if they did, I missed it because I stopped following it since getting the SR).
Was hoping to stay away from Samsung because of the delay of releases, but it was the best for the money at the time (January this year).

[Discussion] Estimated Official Release of JI6?

As most of you already know, thanks to our wonderful member designgears and an anonymous source we have been the first to recieve the leaked JI6 build of FROYO 2.2 for our Captivates. THANK YOU!
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
What are everyone's thoughts now that we have knowledge and proof that it really does exist; when do you think that an OFFICIAL release will be available to flash via KIES MINI or OTA?
I wet my pants! We are the first for official froyo

When I saw the post from my phone, I ran to my car, sped across the city and sat down in front of the computer reading every post while the download was in progress.
At the moment My phone is being flashed to 2.2!
EDIT: I'M ON 2.2 NOW! Haha

that's our addiction of flashing files
Typically, I like to remain stock.
This appears to be stock to me, I'm quite sure we will still receive OTA updates on this ROM.
Hopefully an official release is out in the next few days; for now I'm more than pleased with the work that designgears and the rest of the community here at XDA have put together in only a few hours!
Probably in the next week fews, maybe mid-October to end of October, if we're going along how JH7 was officially released and when it was leaked.
Edit: Apparently Jh7 was leaked maybe a week before the actual OTA so maybe sooner than I thought. But the i9000 Froyo isn't supposed to be out until end of October? who knows
Maybe they can make a vanilla froyo for the Captivate now also. That would be nice to have except for the lack of a swype keyboard.

Don't forget that not all leaks become official OTA updates. We got leaked JH2, JH3, JH7, and THEN an official update to JH7. I expect there will be more leaks before the official.
The i9000 has seen numerous froyo leaks since early August and they still have yet to receive an official update, so I wouldn't get my hopes up for a 2.2 OTA update any time soon.
Still its exciting to finally get a leaked froyo build - can only mean good things are on the way.

We need the official release in order to get the source code. We need the source to do all kinds of things.
Memory Fix?
Anyone think the official update will open up all the 512mb memory?

Yeah. That's why I'm pretty sure this version will not be released as an official update as it doesn't use all the available ram.
I'm also wondering whether the tethering options that Android Central showed in the leaked build will actually be available in the stock update. I would love to see them, but somehow doubt it with AT&T.
Yeah this current release (JI6) has a lot of positive changes - but it's obvious it isn't ready for official release. It's still in the works as far as I'm concerned. I'm just glad it's stable enough for me to be comfortable with.
My thought is that this is the first go round - sort of a base build that they will build on top of. For one thing it is the One-Click Odin and not just a ROM - so someone packaged it to be a one step restore.
Then there are things like mobile AP and USB tethering that will probably get pulled. Other things like UK spelling and the missing Sync scheduling indicate that they pushed some stuff right from the EU build.
There are also some minor defects that existed in 2.1 that are still there - not being able to click on URLs, emails, phone numbers in the calendar; same GAL integration; GPS issues; etc.
Great start though, and no reason for me to go back to 2.1
Samsung has just announced[1] it has been released over OTA for the Samsung Vibrant. So, the Vibrant now has Froyo available officially.

There was a JI6 for vibrant on SamFirmwares in September - it is 2.1 - So I think this is probably the same version - with some minor changes.
I doubt it is Froyo since there is not even a leaked Froyo for Vibrant.
EDIT - confirmed on Vibrant forum - 2.1

Oops. My bad. I got too excited there

Finally got OTA "offer" - what are the specifics?

I'm in San Diego, 4G area. After all of the threads (on various forums) about the OTA update, and after checking periodically, I see there is finally one available to me. They delay from when the first folks posted about this until now is quite odd. Given the reboot issues (even if that is based on some local specifics to some towers only) I am hesitant to install this. In the window where you can download the OTA there is no practical information about what is in the update. Just FYI I am not rooted and have the original 2.2.1 OS that came with my phone.
-What update is this?
-What specifically does it contain?
-Is there any data loss, programs added or removed?
-Do some settings need to be reconfigured after installing this?
Thanks much.
Just a question.
If you have the original software on the phone then you are talking about the first update(mr1) being sent to you now correct?
If you mean MR2, we havent seen any info that it has been officialy released yet...
Sounds pretty clear this is MR1. What does that stand for?
Has the random reboot issue been fixed?
Any idea why some got MR1 weeks to a month+ ago and it just now got to me in San Diego?

The reboots have been fixed with the MR2 update from what Im reading.
Why you are getting the first update so late, I don't know. It may be possible that Verizon stopped the updates due to rebooting and then when they knew which devices it was ok to send it too, they sent it to yours. Just my guess though..
For the longest time I couldnt get the MR1 update.. Im also here in the San Diego Area. When Id check for update on 4G, I'd get a "SERVICE UNAVAILABLE" message. I found a post on another board that reccomended setting the phone to 1X and then checking for update. That work, but it took an hour to download lol.
Maybe Verizon finally got off their ass and fixed it so the update would pull down over 4G here.
Personally I never had issues with the mr1 update but alot of people did have a random reboot issue after downloading it. It doesn't really improve anything so you may be better off waiting for mr2, or rooting and updating to mr2 and gingerbread... Which by the way is awesome

You can get MR2 before VZW releases it? Is MR2 = GB? I did not think that was the case. If MR2 is for 2.2 it can't also be for GB?

The MR2 RUU is froyo. The radio included in the MR2 RUU however works with the current gb roms as well as froyo roms based on the MR2 RUU but will not work with froyo roms based on MR1. The MR2 radio appears to be much more stable with respect to reboots than the MR1 radio was. Combine that stability with gb support and you get the awesomeness mentioned above.

Since I have moved to MR2 my reboots have stopped. I was rebooting 2-3 times a day. I highly recommend getting on MR2.
I have a week old tbolt. Uprooted and stock. Did manual sw check and ended up downloading it. It is MR1. Started getting random reboot later that day and it continued. Installed leaked MR2 and all is well. Think Verizon left MR1 out there manual download for whatever reason. Hope this helps.

G2x GB update...

have a look *near* the bottom of:

take the info with a grain of salt and for whatever it's worth. who really knows.

that it's 2.3.3 rather than 2.3.4?
and, that the info is coming from an lg source directly?

sorry if i missed it.

which thread on xda were you referring to?
I honestly don't care if it's 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, I just want them to release something with fixed drivers already so we can use them.
All the great developers here will upgrade their roms to 2.3.4 anyway, all we need are the bug fixes
useless rumors. back in april they said "coming soon", it's almost july
fyi
first it doesnt surprise me that they are releasing an outdated os again i mean they are only a million dollar company not big like cyanogen .
2nd is smartphonegeek although maybe hes trying to be helpful hasnt given us 1 bit of correct info yet. so although this is probably true im putting no faith in anything he says anymore unfortunately.
We all knew it was 2.3.3 to begin with. No surprises there.
Plus 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 aren't that different. I run CM7 which has 2.3.4 and honestly it is just a number.
I think the only phones running 2.3.4 are the Nexus Phones. The Sensation, Galaxy S2, and G2x will all be at 2.3.3
Although I did see an unofficial 2.3.4 update for the Samsung Galaxy S, it is nothing official.
Lets just hope that this LG update doesn't count GB for future upgrades, as most manufactures will provide at least a few upgrades to the OS. I'd be happy with an official 2.4 Ice Cream update though.
The sensation runs 2.3.3

A question
If I have already installed the leaked 2.3.3 when the ota rolls out will it download that for me since I"m already showing 2.3.3 on my settings or will I have to use Nandroid , reset to original and then get the update?
2.3.4 have two major changes:
1. video support on Gtalk
2. IPv6 support
As long as the changes would take care of the rebooting and battery issues. Last night I unplugged at 100%, went to sleep and this morning battery was dead
I"m just ready for the darn update to get this thing running as it should. and since I"m not a T-Mo customer I cant return it to T-Mo.

either that or keep your phone rooted and wait for someone to compile a stock/rooted version that you can install. it usually only takes one of those guys a few hours after they get the release... thats the way I did it with my N1 after I rooted it.

Because the leaked GB update is horrible. Of all the roms in this forum, THAT unofficial GB leak was the worst. Ever 4 hours the phone would be found turned off in my pocket. It would die on a charger.
If you want a working phone, get that crap off of there. Even EaglesBlood version based on the leak caused me the same issues.
Flash Eaglesblood Froyo edition or CM7.1 RC1. I'd say those are your two best options right now.

Status of ICS on Nexus S?

I haven't seen or heard about when the OTA ICS updates will resume. Maybe I'm not looking in just the right places, but all of my searches (web & xda) don't have any new information.
Has anybody heard about when the updates will resume? I have the i9020a, but I guess I'm asking more generally.

What makes you think ICS OTA was stopped ?
I went back to GB for a day 3 weeks ago and the notifiaction to update to ICS keeps coming and annoying me ... One of the causes I revert back to ICS was the annoying update notification...
PS:My phone is I9020T BTW
Just haven't received any notification to update, and all the news I could find said it had been paused a few weeks ago but there was nothing new or recent saying that the pause was done with. At least that I could find.
That's because you have i9020T.
Google haven't release ICS update for I9020A yet.

i heard some rumor that Google has stop OTA temporarily due some bug ???
I heard it was because of battery issues. True or not don't know, but im guessing there's probably more to it than that. Been waiting along time for it tho.
Nexus s 4g completely stock. 2-5 fC's a day. Lets get this show on the road.

I've been continuing to look around online to see what I could find, and I've stumbled across a seemingly useful thread on the Google Mobile Help Forum. I haven't made 8-10 posts on XDA yet, so I cannot provide an outside link here. I'm sure I could PM it to anybody who asks.
To sum up what I've found, it looks like they're still collecting data about the issues that users are having with the ICS update on the Nexus S. A Google employee provided links on where to report specific issues, which would include the battery issue that you had mentioned.
However, it still doesn't quell any concern about when they're going to have those issues corrected, or how much progress they have made so far.
Why wait ?
Don't wait for the OTA, root your phone and install any one of the amazing choice of developer ICS ROM's to your phone
I chose the ICS version by Peter Alfonso http://download.peteralfonso.com/crespo/rom
(in tandem with Eugene's Speedy Kernel) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401455
and it's brilliant !
Haven't had one FC in three weeks of use and battery life is astounding
Go for it, it's easy to install and if you don't like you can simply revert back to your current ROM (so long as you used ROM Manager and made a backup of course)
Root is the way to go.
ICS is having battery problems. Go with a custom as mentioned above. I went with the [ROM][25-01-12][AOSP][4.0.3] Codename Android 1.2.0|Fully Open Source and its amazing!

Best ICS ROM
I have been using Crossbones after testing out another well known rom. Crossbones seems to have the magic. The developer is very concerned with stability and only adds features if it works well. No random crashes and few bugs. But he rightly labels his current build a beta which I respect. Others are labeling their betas, stable builds. If you are looking for a good rom with lots of potential check this one out. Oh and BTW great battery life.
Thank you all for your suggestions.
I used to flash ROMs on my Captivate, and kept my Nexus S as a Google OTA phone. Though, considering this whole ICS mess, I'm considering going the way of the custom ROM on this device too.
I might give it another week or two, and see if anything happens by the start of February.

If you have a linux machine compile it yourself, or pick one of many custom ROM's out in the development section or get mine from my signature, the lightest ICS Rom out there. No battery issues for me, lasts 2 days on medium usage.
Hmm i saw that Google stopped the update on some regions including mine -_- to gather feedback ...
Good ICS ROM
Checkout this ROM, it comes with the kernel in that integrated package.

Don't wait for the OTA update, just flash this awesome ROM and chose the KERNEL that fit your needs !!!
Google it's way behind on ICS
my setup at the moment
CODENAME ANDROID 1.2 | Matrix v15 cfs
I have rooted and tried a couple ice roms but found them not much better. It was at the end of November tho, went back to stock hoping for the ota. I do know that there are some awesome builds out but I don't wanna wipe again just yet but I'm getting close.
I keep getting the update notification on my nexus S, I'm trying to figure out if this ICS upgrade that my phone keeps telling me about is the same with bugs etc or a fixed one...anyone know?

[Q] ROM version at 2.3.5

I've read that there was an OTA update to 2.3.6 that went out weeks ago. I just purchased this Skyrocket on Saturday - after the update. But it still shows as having 2.3.5 and, even though I have checked several times, it says there are not updates available for it. I'm not too terribly concerned with whatever minor things are in this 2.3.6 update as I am not having any issues with the phone. But what will happen when ICS comes out? Will is skip 2.3.6 all together and go right to 4.x? Or, since it isn't finding 2.3.6, will it find the 4.x when that becomes available?
It was a little buggy, so it was removed. (at least thats the reasoning why its believed to have been removed)
Should be independent of eachother anyways, so no worries.. if they ever do finally release ICS. ;p

Thanks. Saw you had both the S II and the S II Skyrocket. Are the differences between them significant enough to warrant having both?
No not really. I just ended up with an i777 for free, so I play with both. Both are great phones! I love them each for different reasons really... if I had to choose only one I'd prolly go with the skyrocket.. but you can get some ridiculous battery outta the 777. Great travel phone.
