G2x GB update... - T-Mobile LG G2x

have a look *near* the bottom of:
www.lgforum.com/forum/boards/carrie...artphonegeek-dot-dot-dot-its-another-week-and
take the info with a grain of salt and for whatever it's worth. who really knows.

Ya there's already a thread about this
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

that it's 2.3.3 rather than 2.3.4?
and, that the info is coming from an lg source directly?
i've been on this forum all day and i've not seen that reported here.
sorry if i missed it.

Well you weren't to specific on what you were referencing

i referenced the specific info *near* the bottom of the thread. it was posted about an hour ago.
which thread on xda were you referring to?

I honestly don't care if it's 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, I just want them to release something with fixed drivers already so we can use them.
All the great developers here will upgrade their roms to 2.3.4 anyway, all we need are the bug fixes

useless rumors. back in april they said "coming soon", it's almost july

fyi
first it doesnt surprise me that they are releasing an outdated os again i mean they are only a million dollar company not big like cyanogen .
2nd is smartphonegeek although maybe hes trying to be helpful hasnt given us 1 bit of correct info yet. so although this is probably true im putting no faith in anything he says anymore unfortunately.

We all knew it was 2.3.3 to begin with. No surprises there.
Plus 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 aren't that different. I run CM7 which has 2.3.4 and honestly it is just a number.
I think the only phones running 2.3.4 are the Nexus Phones. The Sensation, Galaxy S2, and G2x will all be at 2.3.3
Although I did see an unofficial 2.3.4 update for the Samsung Galaxy S, it is nothing official.
Lets just hope that this LG update doesn't count GB for future upgrades, as most manufactures will provide at least a few upgrades to the OS. I'd be happy with an official 2.4 Ice Cream update though.

The sensation runs 2.3.3

A question
If I have already installed the leaked 2.3.3 when the ota rolls out will it download that for me since I"m already showing 2.3.3 on my settings or will I have to use Nandroid , reset to original and then get the update?

2.3.4 have two major changes:
1. video support on Gtalk
2. IPv6 support

As long as the changes would take care of the rebooting and battery issues. Last night I unplugged at 100%, went to sleep and this morning battery was dead
I"m just ready for the darn update to get this thing running as it should. and since I"m not a T-Mo customer I cant return it to T-Mo.

either that or keep your phone rooted and wait for someone to compile a stock/rooted version that you can install. it usually only takes one of those guys a few hours after they get the release... thats the way I did it with my N1 after I rooted it.

Because the leaked GB update is horrible. Of all the roms in this forum, THAT unofficial GB leak was the worst. Ever 4 hours the phone would be found turned off in my pocket. It would die on a charger.
If you want a working phone, get that crap off of there. Even EaglesBlood version based on the leak caused me the same issues.
Flash Eaglesblood Froyo edition or CM7.1 RC1. I'd say those are your two best options right now.

Where's ota 2.3

There's a leak posted at Android Development section, but I don't recommend it except you exactly know what you're doing.
The phone hasn't even been out a month. Just over 3 weeks. We know it's out there in a semi-final form because we have the leaked version.
Lets just pray to god that it isn't the final version!
oh look its THIS thread again..

The leaked version is H O R R I B L E.
I encountered a lot of crashes and reboots during 2 days of test (I even never encounter ONE SINGLE reboot with V10f) and I have to go back to original V10f. Moreover, the kernel IS NOT CHANGED, so NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER expect the leaked version fix any problem.
The 4G icon looks E X T R E M E L Y U G L Y and I can't believe why T-Mobile/LG put such icon there. The signal bar doesn't turn green when internet is ready like NS.
Many of paid apps don't appear on market (including slingplayer).
Streamfurious is still NOT compatible with leaked version.
Dead internet browser (including Skyfire and default one).
Dead email client.
Leave leaked version for developers to work these junk out.
Yea just curious if anyone had heard anything more about the ota. I've not been able to find anything since the original blurb. Gave us a nugget and then poof. I refuse to use leaked versions after all the leaked versions reeked havoc on the captivates and vibrants. Just seeking if peeps might have found anything.

Well of course the leak version wouldnt be stable. Its not even the final version of gb. So u can't expect it to work right outta the box. We just have to be patient and wait for the official release which I guess is around the corner cuz we just got the leak.

Where is the 2.3 update??? Probably the same place as your patience
Also the 2.3 leak has been pretty stable for me.. I'm running Eagle Blood which is based off the leak.. I'm really a CM guy but CM 7 is just not as stable right now as Eagle Blood has been for me
^thought the same thing with galaxy s leaks and they were months away. That's the scary part to all of this. I was highly disappointed to find it came with 2.2 but liked it enough to buy anyhow on the promise of an almost immediate update.

screw patience
we have been patient. i was told that this phone would have an updated right after release. not a month later, but within days. that's what customer service told me, the t-mobile sales rep, and what about that who bull that it's "coming sooner than youd expect" or "its right the corner" or even "wait won't be long" and "coming soon!" all this quotes from t-mobile. Gingerbread was announced to be coming to this phone long before it the phone came out. i personally had the impression it would be on the phone already and the ONLY reason i was ok with purchasing a Froyo phone after having to deal with my Vibrant SGS for 10 months with only 1 update 6 months after froyo was released for everyone else, 8 months almost for vibrant. i'm done being patient. i expect more from a $500-$600 phone (most advanced phone when it was released). I have patients but there are limits. that "sooner than youd think line" has been said for weeks. and i know many many people feel the same way.
i personally think this could be another intentional put off by t-mobile to build up sensation release or other gingerbread stock phones being annouced/released like froyo was for vibrant (until a rep came out and leaked that it was being held off for the 4g vibrant release, then it was released within a week after it took half a year). this is a Google phone, which is why i purchased it so i would get updates fast like the other google devices have. and this phone needs it's updated for fixes ASAP before the SGS 2 is officially released or the Sensation, and then people will just move on. just my personal feelings. take this post however.
If there is one thing I've learned since being one of the first to have an Android phone is that no manufacturer, carrier, or even Google will promise a "date" for software updates. The availability of an update is announced when the update is available. Would you rather have something that is half-baked? Maybe that is why the GB build was leaked....to appease the whiners until it is really ready. I mean really, hasn't it been a month since the phone's been released? Perhaps the g2x (o2x) was rushed out the door with only 2.2 to be the first tegra2, but i would rather get it with 2.2 on it now than wait for it to have 2.3 to be released.
Even Cyanogen has said this, LOL, and I paraphrase: "It will be ready when it's ready. Now quit asking about release dates."

That's what she said
Learn how to root, learn how to flash... BOOM gingerbread. The newest nightly of CM7 (build 17) is pretty dang stable to me. It has less bugs than the stock ROM I believe. I never trust a word carriers say. Notice how much they said GB would be available right after release. They want to buy the phone with high expectations and then once their numbers are high enough, take their time. Its what always happens. SGS promissed froyo "soon" after release and it took many many many months (6-8?). Cyanogen however has always had either reasonable releases or sometimes faster than expected releases. I personally bought this phone with every intention of rooting and hacking the first day I bought it. To me thats the main advantage of buying a google experience phone.
After the botched leaks and roms that came with the sgs 's ill be leaving this phone stock with root until the official release comes. The thread wasn't a debate. Simply a question. Did some digging on my own and found nothing. Doesn't hurt to ask if others heard something else. We have many people on this site who work for companies that do have privy info.
So again just a question not a discussion carry on.

Ya I heard the TB was getting it June 30th so I would assume roughly a month later for the Charge but I also heard that they were going to just skip giving the Charge GB and go straight to ICS, that's one thing I hate about these cell phone companies, they never give us definite release dates on anything, it's always leak this, rumor that...
Where'd you hear that the Charge would be getting ICS straight from Froyo? It'd be great to get it soon, but I doubt this will be the first phone to get it by any means, and I'm sure they'll have Gingerbread ready before ICS comes out.
Anyway, this is awesome. I knew Samsung was working on Gingerbread, and its already out for the other SGS phones, so it can't be that long. But I'm wondering if TBH got it on there themselves, or if they were able to procure a pre-release build leak. I'm thinking the latter because of the apparently stock ROM otherwise, but then again maybe that was the most stable way to do it.
Its from P3Droid and Team Black Hat, so for those saying its fake, its not. This is great though, apparently that thread worked and they're showing some real interest in this device. With Gingerbread right around the corner, it'd be great to have CM7 to look forward to! Can't wait to see this get out in some build we can use...

Nononono I was reading somewhere, I think it was an Android Forum, they were talking about the Charge not getting Gingerbread and just going Froyo > Icecream, I'm not saying it was going to get it first I meant it wouldn't be getting Gingerbread, it's not confirmed information at all but Gingerbread isn't confirmed either so that's why I'm a bit skeptical
I can't wait to get Netflix to work.
Anyone get Netflix to work on 2.2.1 EE4?
I have read several forums where people have been told by Verizon and/or Samsung reps. that they are not working on gb for the Charge and that they plan to just skip to ICS...although this info is probably coming from some tech support guy in India who can hardly speak English so who knows. I'm just happy to see that SOMEONE is working on getting this thing up-to-date, even if it isn't the corporations that should have released it with 2.3 in the first place...
Well we have a gb leak so they must have been working on it.

Wrong it is in fact and actual GB build for the Charge. I did not see that actual device in the video but I have in fact seen the file and watched it be flashed to a Charge. Its coming just a matter of when the release hits. Word I've gotten is hopefully around Aug time frame.

Completely inaccurate. ICS is not even going to be ready for til 4th Qtr to start with. And as for GB it will for sure be coming to the Charge and in the not to distant future like I just stated.
Not sure why anyone would think that the release of Gingerbread on the Charge will somehow fall into some kind of lockstep timing schedule (30 days after) with the Thunderbolt, when the Thunderbolt is an HTC device and the Charge is Samsung. Two different companies, two different set of internal developers, two different business models etc, etc.
We might get GB next week, or next year, or never, I don't know, but I do know that the release of GB on the TB has nothing to do with the release of GB on the Charge.
Sad that GB is over a year old now, and we're still getting Froyo on the "top of the line" devices and still stressing over when, if ever, we'll get it on three month old devices.
I doubt that any vendors besides the one creating the next Nexus phone has ics. It's nearly half a year away from announcement. Anyways, P3Droid is completely legit. He released gingerbread for the fascinate last week. He ran a video much like that one and people said that he was running froyo and being skeptical. I was running that gb build on my fascinate until I broke it and purchased a charge. If he says he has it, he has it. He apparently has a leaker and I thank God that he does.

You mean 6-8 months old, nowhere near "over a year" old yet. It came out around November-December of 2010, or 6-7 months ago. No need to over exagerate.

The Charge had a GB leak. That is how TBH got a hold of it. I'm thinking other Devs could possibly get a hold of this leak if you know where to look....
But anyway, When I had my DX, TBH was the first to publish a ROM with the leaked GB kernel. They know what they are doing for sure.
I recommend following P3Droid on Twitter. He ususally drops info on a daily basis that I find very interesting. He mentioned weeks ago running netflix on the Charge via Twitter.

Yea. Its annoying. On one hand Google makes them promise to provide upgrades for 18 months from launch of a phone. Then the providers are allowed to sit around and do nothing.
I don't get alot of you. ICS will be on the Thunderbolt as soon as the devs have some time to port it over. Hell Im running GB on my old G1 and official developement stopped on that back at 1.6. If you are here more than likely you are running some sort of custom rom and will be able to upgrade to ICS. Most people that really care about the latest greatest software for their device are Rooting, flashing, and reflashing every couple of weeks to new builds. For those that say that the TB isn't a GB device the official GB rom released a long time ago. I wouldn't hold my breath on the official ICS builds but by god stop your *****ing about it. If its not already rooted with S-off get it done now. Root that ***** overclock and put some life back into that 8 month old device. If you really want to have the newest hardware you will be buying a new phone every 3 months. This was the first 4G LTE phone on Verizon and so far it has made me happy. I have been running CM7 on it since the early alpha days and by God I will run CM9 on it as soon as the alpha drops. I've never been scared to try new roms.

Verizon has no incentive to upgrade the software anyways, why would they? You already bought the device and they've your money
Root it. Customize it. Curb battery consumption. Get the latest for it. Been running gingerbread for like 3 months and this thing flies. ICS will be released in the sweetest of custom roms as soon as it officially drops so just hold tight. Verizon and Google will never update this ***** again, look what happened with the official gb? Released and pulled. They want their money and for you to update to fhe newest. They want you mad at them so you spend the outright cash. Status of ICS on Nexus S?

I haven't seen or heard about when the OTA ICS updates will resume. Maybe I'm not looking in just the right places, but all of my searches (web & xda) don't have any new information.
Has anybody heard about when the updates will resume? I have the i9020a, but I guess I'm asking more generally.

What makes you think ICS OTA was stopped ?
I went back to GB for a day 3 weeks ago and the notifiaction to update to ICS keeps coming and annoying me ... One of the causes I revert back to ICS was the annoying update notification...
PS:My phone is I9020T BTW
Just haven't received any notification to update, and all the news I could find said it had been paused a few weeks ago but there was nothing new or recent saying that the pause was done with. At least that I could find.
That's because you have i9020T.

I've been continuing to look around online to see what I could find, and I've stumbled across a seemingly useful thread on the Google Mobile Help Forum. I haven't made 8-10 posts on XDA yet, so I cannot provide an outside link here. I'm sure I could PM it to anybody who asks.
To sum up what I've found, it looks like they're still collecting data about the issues that users are having with the ICS update on the Nexus S. A Google employee provided links on where to report specific issues, which would include the battery issue that you had mentioned.
However, it still doesn't quell any concern about when they're going to have those issues corrected, or how much progress they have made so far.
Why wait ?
Don't wait for the OTA, root your phone and install any one of the amazing choice of developer ICS ROM's to your phone
I chose the ICS version by Peter Alfonso http://download.peteralfonso.com/crespo/rom
(in tandem with Eugene's Speedy Kernel) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401455
and it's brilliant !
Haven't had one FC in three weeks of use and battery life is astounding
Go for it, it's easy to install and if you don't like you can simply revert back to your current ROM (so long as you used ROM Manager and made a backup of course)
Root is the way to go.
ICS is having battery problems. Go with a custom as mentioned above. I went with the [ROM][25-01-12][AOSP][4.0.3] Codename Android 1.2.0|Fully Open Source and its amazing!

Or just compile it yourself. The code is there.

Best ICS ROM
I have been using Crossbones after testing out another well known rom. Crossbones seems to have the magic. The developer is very concerned with stability and only adds features if it works well. No random crashes and few bugs. But he rightly labels his current build a beta which I respect. Others are labeling their betas, stable builds. If you are looking for a good rom with lots of potential check this one out. Oh and BTW great battery life.
Thank you all for your suggestions.
I used to flash ROMs on my Captivate, and kept my Nexus S as a Google OTA phone. Though, considering this whole ICS mess, I'm considering going the way of the custom ROM on this device too.
I might give it another week or two, and see if anything happens by the start of February.

If you have a linux machine compile it yourself, or pick one of many custom ROM's out in the development section or get mine from my signature, the lightest ICS Rom out there. No battery issues for me, lasts 2 days on medium usage.
Hmm i saw that Google stopped the update on some regions including mine -_- to gather feedback ...
Good ICS ROM
Checkout this ROM, it comes with the kernel in that integrated package.

Don't wait for the OTA update, just flash this awesome ROM and chose the KERNEL that fit your needs !!!
Google it's way behind on ICS
my setup at the moment
CODENAME ANDROID 1.2 | Matrix v15 cfs
I have rooted and tried a couple ice roms but found them not much better. It was at the end of November tho, went back to stock hoping for the ota. I do know that there are some awesome builds out but I don't wanna wipe again just yet but I'm getting close.
I keep getting the update notification on my nexus S, I'm trying to figure out if this ICS upgrade that my phone keeps telling me about is the same with bugs etc or a fixed one...anyone know?

Who went back to GB?

I'm on AOKP ICS but I'm considering going back to a GB ROM because of the better battery, a reliable HD camera, no sleep of death, etc. Anyone else on the same boat? I can't make a decision! :\

I went back and haven't looked back! ICS was too much of a hassle with all those problems you listed. If you haven't seen it yet, LG released a GB 2.3.4 update as of a few days ago I believe. I just updated to that today and it has been nothing but fast and reliable so far (knock on wood haha).

Any idea what the changes are or where I can get my hands on a changelog? I'll try out one last ICS ROM and then give the 2.3.4 ROM a go.

If you do decide to upgrade as of now (from reading the dev thread about this new update) it looks like if you flash a custom rom after installing the new march baseband you won't be able to make phone calls. Only works with the stock LG 2.3.4. Just a warning if you were thinking of flashing a rom with the new baseband. I'm sure they will come up with a solution soon though, they always do!
I've upgraded once to ICS, and I went back immediately. Although there were times when I flashed different ICS roms from different devs, but they all seem to have the same issues, so I just stayed on GB, I'm happy with Hellfire Phoenix, really stable with Faux CM kernel at stock voltage.
I did as well, the UI wasn't worth all the technical difficulties. Went from HFS to HFP.

Can't the baseband be restored to an older one withe the GetRIL app on the Play Store?
Btw, does the release of 2.3.4 signify that we won't be getting ICS officially? I might as well abandon ICS now if we're never going to get updated drivers from Nvidia...

no and no to put it simple.
The GetRIL app does just that get's RIL's no a baseband.
We never knew or will we know cause LG can't make up their mind it seems. Some forums have public LG moderators/employees that state that they haven't heard a thing about LG giving the G2X ICS love. On the other hand I have read places and posted here that LG's Facebook stated that they will update our phone and the European version to ICS sometime in the 2nd quarter. So it's pretty much don't hold your breath and be patient.
The fact that LG hasn't given up on updating the G2x means a lot...even though it's been EOLed, though. But, speculation is speculation.
i went back to GB, due to the camera issue. the ISC roms are great but unless LG\Nvidia releases their drivers these roms will never be perfect. another reason i went back to GB is because i like MIUI (the whole interface and the ability to record calls). cant wait for MIUI v4.

I suspect they won't give us ICS and have given up hope, so I don't have to worry about being patient. ;P
GB till we get drivers. I'm satisfied with it for now.

Coming off of about a month using ics roms, its nice to get back to gb because EVERYTHING WORKS! Also, pretty sure the o2x will get ics towards the middle of this year. We just have to wait for the drivers to be ported. Until then, some of us can make due without hwa, but its hard to stay away from gb for too long.
Back on MIUI for now. I themed it to look like ICS so I'm satisfied for now. Much better battery life too! But I miss the ICS multitasking still.
I really like the UI on ICS and it works well enough for me that I've just stayed on it. Went to GB for a day and decided against it. The known issues with ICS have not really been an issue for me at all.
I used and was very happy running CM7, even installed it on my girl's phone which will likely stay that way.
A few weeks ago I went to Eagleblood's most recent AOSP build and don't see myself going back to any form of GB. Yes the ICS ROMs do have their issues but so far nothing game breaking for me.
pretty new here and I never even tried an ICS ROM yet. But even as an Android semi-noob it makes sense that an ICS ROM will not be as polished as a well done GB ROM. Hoping to try one soon but the general sentiment of this thread makes me think it will be a while before I do.

They're very usable and stable enough for daily use. If the known issues don't bother you, then you'll enjoy ICS. The first ROM I flashed to my phone was an ICS ROM and I've remained on ICS since. I tried going back to GB, but ended up flashing ICS again the next day. Give it a try. If you don't like it, you can always re flash a GB ROM.
