[Q] Help rooting S Galaxy S2 (noob) - General Questions and Answers

Hi
first off, if I am braking any rules by posting this here then pls direct me to the correct forum (very sorry if its in wrong place)
anyhow, I just got a new contract with a Samsung Galaxy S2 on virgin mobile (UK) & am hoping to root it so I can "maybe" install a new rom etc but the main reason I want root is because of the bloat that came with the phone. I don't really want to damage the phone, so I wont try until I know I am confidant in doing it without killing my baby.
can anybody either tell me how search works here because I cant find any info, or failing that tell/show me the easiest safest way to gain root on my baby.
if I root will virgin be able to tell if I ever need to send it in for repairs. I've heard of yellow triangles & flash counters & USB jigs & am very, very confuzed. pls help

I believe your model is the i9100, if so follow the guide below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

Thanks fella

You can root via kernel which is the easiest
Sent from my LG-V909 using Tapatalk

if I root using this method can Samsung find out if I have to send it back, or is my warranty null & viod if I root?. thanks

I believe any method of rooting will void your warranty, so its best to return it to stock before sending it back to Samsung.

So again ill ask, is there any way for sum one to connect to my pc & root it for me pls? I don't want ics flashing, I just want root.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

It's not that difficult, invest some time and you can do it yourself.
There are even youtube videos guiding people how to root their device.
If you have trouble or questions about a specific step ask here.
I wouldn't recommend giving a random person access to your computer via teamview...
Its usually:
- Find out what ROM version you currently have
- Look for the right kernel with root matching your ROM
- Get usb drivers for your computer
- Reboot your device in download mode
- Use Odin or Heimdall to flash the new kernel
From a quick glance, this looks pretty solid:
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/how-to-root-your-samsung-galaxy-s2-50004972/
Edit: was bored looked around some more.
So this actually is okay too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693
And this was the one i used to root a friends sgs2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Most difficult part was actually choosing the right kernel fitting the ROM, too much choice

thanks for the info.
can you tell me exactly which unsecure firmware to go for pls?
these are my kernel version etc on my phone...

A comprehensive guide will be available if you take your time and dig the sub-forums for the S2.

hey man ,
take a look at this , it's a one click thing. super easy super safe. your warranty won't work anymore , you have to be aware of that. so here you go
(i'm a new member of xda so i'm not allowed to post links)
there is a website called galaxys2root you will find a root galaxy s2 guide .

Try SuperOneClick. It's literally 1 click to root...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
You'll need the drivers for your phone already installed (Kies installs them for you), and you'll need to kill all processes that are related to Kies. Just read what to do on the above mentioned thread and you'll be rooted in no time.

Yup, I gathered that. Have a thanks

OK so I found the insecure & secure kernel for my fone (XWKI4) & I'm pretty sure cf-root is the way to go to gain root, but now I'm confused about the custom can in cf-root, I've read that in ics USB storage don't work, video record don't work etc so my question is this, should I root it at all as ics official will be out very soon & that has everything working except flash so should i wait? The 1 thing that's pushing me towards say CM9 ICS is the lack of touchwiz UI, if i choose a custom rom I get the full ICS UI experience which is what I'm after, but as this phone is very expensive I really don't like the idea of voiding my warranty 2 weeks into a 12 month contract. Suggestions welcome (& yes I've spent 6 days reading ALL sections & posts.)
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Why isn't my last post showing up?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

you got it wrong man , you don't need the secure and insecure kernel anymore , look for the superonclick method. all you have to do is download a couple of stuff , plug your phone and click.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
everything works on ICS , it depends on the ROM you choose. so far the only incomplete ROM is the Cyanogenmod 9. but i'm currently on Resurrection ICS Remix v1.0 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854 )
and it runs great. it's blazing fast and super stable and everything works great. including camera and sd storage.

Cheers so if I root with SOC how do i then install Clockworkmod so i can flash ics resurection? Thanks for all the answers

What recovery is this going to use?
Lets you choose
After I just finished a few hours ago reading every post in the other thread and following all those steps!
Way to go, jiqqaman! This will help out quite a few folks on here.
Awesome. I rooted my phone earlier (at least I think I did) and I can't get any rom to install. I think it has to do with the amon-ra recovery so I'm glad this will let me choose.
Does it matter that my evo may already be rooted?
Damn your quick.
Wow Amazing if this works I like very much. Great work put up a more prominent donation button
Such a tease!
so this will root a phone that did the 6/29 OTA? just by following these steps?

I dunno anything bout unrevoked , but this doesnt give you the latest radio/wimax that the 1.47.651.1 OTA has. Theres a guide that shows you how to add the latest radio/wimax somewhere on the forum.
I'm using this as my very first post here.
On my old evo I used simple root and it was amazing! I had to return the old evo and get a new one, and as luck would have it it came with the new update.
I can't wait for this new simple root to be uploaded, I keep checking this thread every 5 minutes.
Anyway, one this program is up, running and working I assure you I will be clicking the donate button.
Thank you for the work and effort you are putting into this.

well unrevoked basically let you do anything root would except remove bloatware and flash roms
cuz what i was planning to do was install the update directly from my phone and then root with this method .. if i do that will my phone have the latest radio wimax added on to it already?

First off thank you for the easy root But now I have an issue, the SD card wont work, looks like it wont find the extension anyone know how to fix this? Ive used many different card and none read but I know all work. Without this I cant do a ROM
Try reformatting the card? Did they work before you rooted? do they work again if you unroot?
They worked before the root, I didn't unroot yet. When you out then in the phone and go to the SD card setting it shows nothing. Just says unavailable. So I can't even format it on the phone. I've formatted them in many ways on the pc too
HTC EVO = my best friend
did you try pulling out the sdcard and putting it back in? does it show a blank sdcard, or no sdcard at all?

1. Go here and download a stock rom to install on your captivate.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Instructions on how to do that are on this page. I suggest going for 2.3.5 gingerbread I897UCKJ3...with bootloaders, then flash the kernel with CWM which is what you use to install other roms.
2. If you are not happy with Gingerbread, and want to get ICS or other custom roms, go here and read up on how to install a new rom over stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
Actually, do read up on both stickies to have a better idea of the flashing process. I didn't know a damn thing about flashing 3 weeks ago, and now I've been flashing roms, kernels and modems without any problems. Just make sure to read everything carefully before doing anything. As for which rom is best...well, that's up to you to try and pick out which one is best for you.
Good luck.

my JIG, my winner
Damn Bricks!
Bricked my phone a few times and fixed it OK until i ran into the "ICS RESET PHONE" bug
Now the only way to fix is by tricking the phone into thinking the external sd card is the inernal sdcard....ADB SDK AVD...three big acronyms for IM SCREWED!
Or am I?
Found some people over at mobiletechvideos to apply the Unbrickable MOD created by Adam Outler (Genius of sorts).
Also they can provide someting called JTAG for very reasonable prices... that is unless you know you can fix it yourself. Which unfortunately I cant right now
or I would just because I know its possible, just not for me..right now.
I think its really sad that the only software to really screw up my phone ICS
was my favorite of all. I hope all is fixed when I get my Unbrickable phone back I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!

I can't run Odin cuz I don't have a PC. I'm on a MAC. And I can't find the Heimdall files to flash over. If this is in the wrong section, I'm sorry. I thought since I was requesting a Nandroid backup of a ROM that this belongs in development.

Hi there
Do not worry. It is easy to come back to the stock Rom. I have done this a hundred of times already. You only need to read a little bit the process to install via ODIN, I recommend you use a windows based software in order to make your software work with your tablet. Do not forget to install Samsung kies with the driver to communicate with the device as well as the odin software with the stock Rom which you can find both programs in this link:

I hope you can find this information useful.

I use a Mac and have installed Windows via Bootcamp. Would that be something you feel comfortable doing to have access to the Windows platform when you need it? It's pretty easy to do (lots of tutorials out there including one from Apple) and because it is free ATM, I installed Windows 8 consumer preview - and it runs pretty well on my Mac.

But I was able to get a hold of a Windows based PC for a little while early this morning and Odin'd the Tab back to stock... Finally..... Thank you everyone who provided help and tried to find a solution to my issue... This is why I LOVE this site and (most of) the people in it... When a member has an issue, other members take care of it... Its really awesome... Thanks again...
MOD----- CLOSE THREAD PLEASE----

Kingo Android Root is a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing application for Windows based computers that forgoes the device specific route, and offers rooting for a lot of Android devices from a variety of manufacturers. Supported phones include the likes of Google Nexus lineup, several HTC devices including HTC One, One X, One V, Droid Eris, Motorola Defy, a number of Samsung phones, popular LG devices and some smartphones from Sony. It offers a true one-click root experience, where you have to just download the application, install it, connect your device and click Root.
There are a few things that you need to be mindful of. When connecting your device, you need to have USB Debugging enabled in Android settings. There’s no requirement for pre-installed device drivers, as the software will take care of that for you. In fact, it will give you the Root option only after the drivers have been properly configured. Past that, all you have to do is hit the Root button, and let the application work its magic.
The app pushes SuperSU binaries which are slightly outdated, but get instantly updated to the new version thanks to Google Play. However, it won’t install a custom recovery, so that part you’ll have to take care of manually. Kingo Android Root supports Android versions up to 4.3.

How to Use the Kingo Android Root One-Click Tool
Step 1. Download the Kingo Android Root windows application and install it on your Windows desktop.
Step 2. Once the installation is finished, run the application and connect the device to the computer with USB cable to start the process. Now the application will install the latest drivers on your PC.
Step 3. This will take some time to install the drivers. Once the drivers are installed on your PC, you will see a new screen on your desktop with your device name and "ROOT" button. See the screenshot below:
Step 4. Hit the ROOT Button from the app screen to begin the root process on your device.
Step 5. Be patient. It will take some time to finish the process. Once the operation is completed, you will see the “Root Succeeded” message on your screen.
Your device should now be rooted. With the help of this application you can unroot your device as well. All you have to do is select the Unroot button and follow the onscreen instructions. For more help, check the application FAQ section Mod Edit here too..

did you end getting this resolved? reroot, reboot? keep us posted. if we iron out early problems and errors, future users will have better/quicker fixes. cheers.

It's unclear what was causing the slowness, but after a while it finally all went through and my phone is now rooted. Thanks!
I did have to restart the App several times while it was downloading the update. That also seemed to be going very slowly. My download speeds wouldn't go above 100kb/s (consistently) and after a while the download will stop at a certain percentage. I would then have to restart the app, and then it would continue from the percentage but then stop at another percentage.
I have 25+ MBps connection, so I don't think it was my internet. It could have been the laptop though for slowness on both ends, downloading and communicating with the phone. I would have to look into it further though.
Anyways, thanks for responding to me!
Did you use any other devices via USB port? I know when I did mine I had to delete my USB drivers that way it would go faster and not unmount my gs4 all the time.
