Wifi error/not working Sensation ICS 6.5.1 - HTC Sensation

When I first booted up WiFi worked for about 2 minutes. Found my home network, connected...appeared all was well.
Then suddenly it stopped and now it'll just read Turning Wi-Fi On... indefinitely. Eventually it'll say error.
Originally superwiped before flashing ROM, flashed the suggested radio.
I tried clearing cache and dalvik, didn't help.
My phone hates wifi apparently. Wi-Fi being junk is the reason I rooted in the first place. Was hoping this'd fix it. The fact that it's "intermittent" makes me wonder if it really is a hardware fault.
Any ideas?

Android Version: 4.0.3
Sense: 3.6
Android Revolution 6.5.1 by mike1986
Kernel: 3.0.16 SebastionFM #1
Hboot- 1.27.1100
Radio- 11.22.3504.07_M
Tried a factory restart w/ sim pulled, still nothing.
The odd thing is how it worked at first when I booted up..then stopped functioning alltogether.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me this morning. I went to bed last night and wifi was working great. This morning when I took it off the charger I noticed that wifi wasn't running. Tried turning it on an it wouldn't turn on. I thought it may be a glitch so I tried restarting. No change. Realized I had fastboot checked so restarted without it. No change.
If I go to the Settings menu under the icon to switch on wifi it says error. When I try and turn it on it has the message about turning on wifi for a few minutes and then the switch turns off. I also noticed that it is draining my battery VERY fast (most likely because it is continually trying to to turn on wifi)
Not sure what happened or what would cause this. I'm running ARHD 6.2.1.
I was planning on upgrading this afternoon after work to 6.5.1. Hopefully this new wifi issue doesn't get in the way of that...
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to update your firmware first!
In ARHD thread Mike1986 states: 3.32.401.x firmware is required! So go to this tread and get the necessary firmware and you wouldn't have any wifi issues.
I'm also running 6.5.1 and have wifi on for almost the entire day without any problems!

Thanks for the reply BioTeck. I can't speak for BrokenWiFi but for me I've been running on 6.2.1 for about 2 weeks no (with the suggested firmware for that version) and haven't had a problem. Then all of the sudden this morning it started having this problem.
Any suggestions on what I can try? This evening I plan on upgrading firmware to latest as well as upgrading to 6.5.1 so I'm hoping that helps but are there any other suggestions I can try?

That's strange indeed!
If I were you I would try to flash the latest version of ARHD 6.5.1 and see how that goes? For me 6.5.1 is rock stable, fast and it feels smooth!

I did update it originally.
I decided to go through again...I just downloaded 3.32.401 from that thread...flashed it, superwiped and installed ROM. Still no dice. It reads all the same as it did before in the "software information" area.
I don't think I could have booted w/o that firmware correct? I'm coming from gingerbread originally...
Am I missing something?
Thanks a ton for helping me, I really really really really appreciate it.

Strange.... Apparently it's an ICS bug and has been posted here!
[09Jan]Turning on Wi-Fi gives an error after flashing hacked Kernel
This seems to happen if you flash the 4.0.1 kernel on a 4.0.3 ROM, make sure you've flashed the correct kernel for your ROM base and cleared both cache and dalivk after flashing.

On the ARHD thread, there seems other to have the same problem. Some of them solved the problem by reflashing. Perhaps you can try that as well and post this problem in ARHD's thread as well...

This happen to me way way long ago, back during the series 3 ARHD. After going through many things, a simple rom reflash fixed it for me.
I was never able to figure out why. I asked around in here and else where and there were some talk of it back then with a few tips for solution, which did not work.
As far as I could tell, that was the only time ever that I flashed a rom without turning off wifi before rebooting into recovery. I have since then diligently turn off wifi before flashing anything. Never encountered the problem again.
P.s. I recalled reading something about how the wifi is stuck on "On", while the rom trying to turn something that's already On, On and errored itself.

Wanted to update on my progress. I solved the issue on my phone:
I was messing around with it today while waiting for a meeting to start and I found where the wifi settings, etc are stored. It ended up being a corrupt/invalid wpa_supplicant.conf file. All I had to do was pull that file out from the directory and turn on wifi and *poof* it worked again. When I turned wifi on it created a new file and everything has been great so far this afternoon.
In case anyone wants to give it a shot who is having wifi issues you can find the wpa_supplicant.conf file in /data/misc/wifi/ directory on your phone. Simply cut/rename the file and put it somewhere else. If you have wifi passwords you want to save, you can open the original file using a text editor and copy the settings over to the new file.
I believe the cause of my issue was actually Titanium Backup. Looking at the last time it backed up my wifi settings was back when I wasn't running ICS yet. Yesterday I did restore an app using it and must have accidentally restored that old backup. Their formats are different from Gingerbread to ICS apparently and it was causing errors.

Unfortunately after reading your latest post, Broken WiFi, I don't know that the fix that worked for me applies to you but just in case --> Are you using (or did you use) Titanium Backup to restore any of your apps? Is it possible you have a corrupt file as well? Obviously you are wiping out that file when you superwipe so I don't think you have the same issue but it is probably worth checking.

Funny, it worked!
I had a feeling the supplicant was the problem..
In my last rom it wouldn't let me touch anything in /data even though I was SU and S-OFF.....
So I'd just delete the one in /system... but it never helped.
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Seriously, I've spent like 15 hours troubleshooting this...reading every thread on the net.
Never thought to try and delete the one in /data in this rom.
THANK YOU so very very much.
I can't post in DEV, but maybe you could let some people know over there that it's a fix.

I copied wpa_supplicant.conf from gb miui and it seems to be working for now, will test it some more..

Sounds like hardware..I had a problem with what turned out to be the battery cover, it has the antennas built in to it.. changed this and was good again. Worked for me..

After deleting the above suggest file, my wifi no longer says "turning on" but says error. If I hit turn on, it reverts back to constantly saying "turning on".
no luck for me

One thing you might try doing is deleting it and then try restarting the phone. That would be the next step I would do. If it doesn't work then you might have to start looking into a hardware or rom issue.
After you try deleting and then restart if that doesn't work I'd back everything up and try flashing your rom again.

I did try to cut/delete/rename the file through ES File Explorer and Super manager but the file doesn't move/delete/rename. Plus for some reason this file is under "/etc/wifi/" instead of "/data/misc/wifi/" /data is an empty folder in my phone. Maybe you are using different explorer?
By the way , I've updated my phone with OTA_PYRAMID_ICS_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.5-1.50.401.1_P_release_246627z7pljztztog0er50. Everything works fine except wifi. when I switch back to gingerbread , it works fine. even it worked fine when I installed hypernonsense ICS rom. any idea what that is? will be greatful for the help. regards

I've deleted the file and restarted many times, Wifi will say OFF or ERROR, i will try to turn it on and the same problem occurs, stuck saying "turning on". I've reflashed rom and firmware many times using different kernels and techniques etc. I can't believe it to be hardware related as everything was fine with version 6.3.1 and firmware 3.30... then updated to 6.5.1 and 3.32.. fine again however a couple of hours later WiFi was off and continued to say "turning on". I'm going to try to downgrade to 6.3.1 and 3.30 again to see if that helps..

I've having the same problem. I updated to firmware 3.32 and ROM ARHD 6.5.1 last Saturday and WiFi seemed to be working until yesterday. Today it won't work at all - I can't make or receive calls and had to move the SIM card to a Blackberry curve so I could get some work done.
Tonight I tried deleting the wifi supplicant file posted earlier and that seems to help for one or two calls then it's back to no calls at all. So then I wiped the cache and devlik cache and tried again. That may have helped, but I'm not sure yet.

I'm starting to see a real trend in these WiFi issues. There have been a lot of threads about it lately. I don't know what is causing the problem though.
I had my WiFi shut off again today with the same issue. The fix I posted earlier worked again but having to do this every few days is not going to be acceptable...
I REALLY am enjoying ics and arhd 6 but I'm afraid between this WiFi problem and the fact that T-Mobile WiFi calling doesnt work I might be going back to gingerbread...

htc sensation wifi error

yes I have tried almost everything, like flashing custom roms or stock ruu almost everyday with different variations. flashing kernels, tweeks, so on and so on.
It works somehow and it disconnect itself after a while or totally stucks in "wireless is turning on". After it get online it makes couple of reboots and it gives "wireless is turning on" error again. I can use the phone for days but wireless never gets on.
The funny point is when wireless on and screen is locked and screen is off. When I attempt to click screen lock button, sometimes it never gives light but I can see that The screen is on and I can move the ring and do whatever i want but it is very hard to see actually. I have to put on light on to see the pictures but it doesnt happen when wifi is off or gives error.
and another funny point is I can swipe down upper bar when screen is locked. I can do bypass.
What the hell is going on my phone? no idea really
lol, i don't know a solution for the screen/wifi issue. but lockscreen pulldown status bar is a new feature of ICS, not a bypass
to make it easier to access your notifications
we have the same issue i even downgrade to GB but still the same problem did have the wifi issue when you did OTA ?

me too i am exactly like you now i am running GB and i ma flashing the radio
I think most of the people having same issues and problems but having no solution for that? it is just ridiculous.
Is there anybody out there that can help us please.

Hi,
Have a look at THIS THREAD
Particularly # 3 and Extra 1
I have this problem as well...whatever I do, I can't get wifi to work anymore...I reflashed firmware, tried several different roms, I followed the guide in the aforementioned post...nothing helps...it always says "Error" after some time.
Is there anybody who knows what to do?
Struggled with same problem for months...gave up
I had the same problem with my wi-fi and bluetooth. Both would get stuck on "turning on" mode and never come on. Everything else worked fine. I too flashed ROMS, Kernels, RUU's etc. to no avail. SO I GAVE UP. After 2 months without wifi i couldn't anymore so i called HTC, they asked for my S/N and IMEI and confirmed I was still under warranty, so I un-rooted, went back to S-ON, flashed the newest official T-Mobile RUU and shipped the phone away. I called today and they said the MOTHERBOARD was being replaced and I should have it back this week! Woot-Woot! Try giving HTC a call...worst thing that happens is they say NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY...but you won't find out till you give em a call...*shrug.
I have the same problem with the lock screen and wifi. Except for me the wifi is always on "Error". It doesn't say anything else it just says error. It started happening after a system update failed to install. An update would come up and reboot my phone to try and install it. So it would start up ext4 recovery and ext4 would do some stuff and then reboot again. After boot I was asked again if I wanted to install the update. I repeated this process a couple of times before deciding I had enough and deleted the update.
Wifi has been on Error ever since. Everything else works fine.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm on a HTC Sensation XE stock rom but HTC Dev unlocked and perm rooted.

Hi buddy.. I was having the same problem as you with the wifi error. Also my phone was restarting by itself. what I did was that I removed the SD card and left the phone without it. It worked for me. After that my wifi was working perfectly and no more restarts. I had a 8GB SD Card before, maybe with this new update this 8GB SDcard was too heavy for the phone. I running a 2GB SDcard now with no problems. Please let me know if it worked to you as well.. Good luck!!

I tried this, but it did not work. I'm not sure if my problem is a hardware failure or a software problem. 3 weeks after I got this phone, it got water damaged. Full of water! I took out the battery, letted it dry for some hours and turned it on. Everything worked! Only thing to see from the water, was the spot, that shows if it have got water, was 3/4 red. Everyting went good within a month or so. Then in feburary/march it stopped working (wifi). The same thing for Bluetooth. It's just writing "turns on" wifi or the bluetooth, and after 5-10 minutes it say "error"
Edit: The reason why I wonder about if it's a hardware/software failure is, I do not remember if it came within a install of an costum rom or it just happened out of now where
Any sugestions?

BusyBox Update failed

I'm having an odd problem, and I'm not sure what to do about it.
This morning when I woke up, I noticed that there was a BusyBox update in my notification bar. Upon trying to update it failed.
So, I uninstall BusyBox, and try to reinstall it, but I'm met with a message that I don't have root access. Upon checking with Root Checker, I DO have root access. But, now all of a sudden, my wifi is not working, when it has worked flawlessly up to this point.
I'm not sure what to do. I don't have a nandroid backup to roll back to, and I need my wifi to work. Would doing a factory reset and flashing a new ROM solve this problem?

ok need to go into CWM and flash these files, should correct it, I had this issue on a ROM dont recall which one or it might of been on a rooted stock....
but before you do anything.....
download these files and put them on your sd card of the phone, NOT THE EXT memory card, you are gonna flash them like you would a ROM ok, in cwm, you can flash them back to back while you are in CWM...kk
download this file first and flash this file first: FLASH ME FIRST

check the MIUI thread...

I think MIUI occasionally loses recovery. Possible kernel issue.
Read through the thread to see if you can get some additional info.
I'm not sure if it has any bearing on your wifi..possible.
If you know how, you can try extracting the kernel from MIUI rom and reflashing just the kernel using SGS kernel flasher to retain your data.

I definitely don't know how to do that haha. I'm a noob when it comes to this whole game, although I'm slowly learning.
Do you think doing a factory reset, wiping everything, and then flashing a new ROM might fix my issue? I did want to try out one of the new ICS ROMs, so if that will fix my problem I might as well go ahead and try one of them out.
Flashing Uniporn seemed to have fixed my issue. I first re-flashed MIUI and that didn't solve anything, so I guess the issue was with MIUI? Just odd that the wifi would drop out after using it flawlessly for 4 months.
Oh well, got something new to play with again. Thanks for the help guys!

[Q]wifi problems in ICS

hello,
i've been trying to get my mt4gs to turn wifi on in ics. when i turn it on it says, "turning on" but just goes back to "off". i tried turning it on via settings and via the panel. i do a full wipe every install -reset data, clear cache, wipe dalvik cache. also not sure if it's related adb cannot detect device when booted but works fine in recovery when in ics.
i've read and tried the various .zip files for various radio/kernel posted by football but still no go. i may be overlooking a step when flashing but here is my device info:
CWM Recovery version 5.5.0.4 also used 5.0.2.7
Baseband: 11.59.3504.00U_11.16.3504.20_2
HBOOT: Unlocked
DOUBLESHOT PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.45.0013
RADIO-11.16.3504.20_4
Nov 21 2011
it works using gingerbread - tried OTA Stock, as well as bulletproof and it connects ok, but i need to turn wifi off first if i need to reboot otherwise i get the same issue, wifi won't turn on.
sorry for the long post, and forgive me if i missed an already existing thread. thanks for reading. any help is greatly appreciated.
well what rom are you using
I had the same problem with certain ROMs. Sometimes it would even say instead of switching back to off it would just say error. I used Dark Raider for Vivid and had that problem. I did everything and gave up. I downgraded my vivid to GB and rooted it. WiFi is an essential to me so I have to stay where I can switch it on. I hope there's a fix for this soon.

I hope there's a fix for this soon.

that's what i've encountered with ics, on gb, if i forget to turn wifi off before rebooting, my wifi will just say error. so i end up having to master reset too.
thanks for the reply.
when you flash a rom, are you restoring a backup in titanium or something?
i have never had this problem and i have tried every rom on xda and rootzwiki
I've had this happen too. I've fixed it by using fastboot and flashing the boot.img from the ROM or Kernel update that I had last installed. My phone is s-on so I have to do that everytime I apply a ROM or am update that has a boot.img in it.

i tried doing that as well, my phone is S-OFF.
It was really frustrating for a while. It was the exact symptom you have described. I kept trying by flashing the kernel with fastboot, then flashing the ROM, and then flashing the kernel again with fastboot. It seemed that whenever I changed something, I had to use that sequence to get it to work again.

i think i will try this method. i'll try with the previous roms i've posted first. i'll post my results later today.
Update
Wifi still no go using ICS. Is there a recommended radio version when using ICS ROMS?
Any stock GB Rom version wifi is ok. Using Bulletproof 1.1 works fine as well. Tried v0.9b WildchildICe and update4 of unofficial cm9 and still no wifi. Gonna stick with WildChildIce rom for now and try different Radio combinations.

U got the problem solved? I have exactly the same issue each damned time
When you flash, try mounting system and data in recovery prior to the flash. There used to be an error where wifi would hang as described if those were not mounted upon flashing. Couldn't hurt to try.

Try this. Go HERE. Go down to the 3rd post. Look for GanOptimizer & follow the instructions. No promises but sometimes that will lock it on in ICS.

Wifi won't work on ICS, only on HC - Help needed

Hello all I hope you can help me with this...
I'm having the strangest issue with my P6200L... Everything was working fine a couple of days ago... I was using latest CM9 by aorth here, browsing the web and everything when suddenly.... Wifi disconnected and never reconnected again...
The symptoms are:
- displays all available networks in range
- if I force to connect, all networks disappear and saved connections are "not in range"
- if I turn off/on again it displays all networks in range again, saved ones are "disabled", if I force connect it repeats the cycle.
I tried factory reset dozens of times. Didn't work.
I tried flashing CM9 again (with this and another patch I found on the thread (forgot where it is)) dozens of times. Didn't work.
I tried flashing official ICS (Open Austria) dozens of time. Didn't work.
Needless to say, I did data wipe/factory reset/format cache/clear dalvik twice between each flash.
And then I flashed stock Honeycomb. It worked. Wifi connected! All was fine!
Marvelous! Or so it seemed...
Now that I got it working again, I want to upgrade to ICS, so I flashed ICS Open Austria. Wifi stopped working.
"Ohh well", I thought, "let's try everything again"
Flashed stock Honeycomb again. Working.
Flashed CM9 + patch. Stopped working.
Flashed ICS Open Austria. Still not working.
Flashed stock Honeycomb yet again. Working.
Flashed ICS Open Austria. Not working.
Flashed stock Honeycomb. Working.
My conclusion: Wifi works only on stock 3.2.
Why? I have absolutely no idea whatsoever.
I've tried every possible combination of flashing and wiping data (except from stock ICS recovery, as I have one of those bad chips and I'm afraid of the brick bug)
Is there anything else left to try? Maybe copying some system files over from stock Honeycomb to an ICS firmware?
I'm really getting desperate here and I've run out of options. I'm hoping the community here on XDA helps me solve this mystery.
It is similiar to this bug here, but although the user there fixed it by several wipes/flashes, apparently I'm not having the same luck.

Really? On every ICS firmware? But why was it working the first time I flashed ICS, but not anymore?
Sorry for all these questions, it's just that I'm completely dazzled by this issue, hahaha :silly:
But thank you for your reply :highfive:
try wifi fixer, i solved my problem with wifi.

Hahahaha I'm 100% sure this is NOT the issue here
Wifi networks keep dissapearing when I try to connect. I have tried in 3 different routers with different encryption settings, so I'm sure this is not on my end.
Could be that you flash and incorrect firmware, maybe for the p6210 tab?
Sorry, I'm just guessing , I don't know what could be the problem.

No problem about that, we're all guessing
But no, I'm sure it's for the P6200 because it worked the first time I flashed. If it was for the P6210 my tab wouldn't even boot, partition layout is different...
I'm having this kind of issue aswell. Wifi is doin' fine with HC 'til flashed it to ICS. Damn, I really hope someone could help us regards with this issue. I also tried Wifi fixer, it helps but not that enough. 'Cause it connects me to my wifi but after a minute or two. It'll disconnect and reconnect. This is happening again and again. And it's kinda annoying when watching video on youtube or surfing the net. Well, just sharing my issue.
Yeah, I know how it's like... I reverted back to ICS while there isn't a fix... It's weird because it also happens on official ICS from Samsung, which it shouldn't
guys, I had the identical problem with wifi on ics. I returned to the hc and wifi worked. Then again the ics and did not work. Wipe cache, Dalvik, data, everything I tried several times and no results . Then I installed wifi fixer and it was a little better, over *# 94 349 # tablet began work with the occasional stop. a couple of times I rebooted it. and after one reboot started to work normally. I know that I m not helped, but it is my experience.

Are you talking about this app? I've tried that, but the only thing it did was to keep disabling/enabling the wifi... Several reboots later, same results... I'm glad it worked for you, but so far I'm not in luck

OK, I got some progress.... But it's still bad, keeps disconnecting... Here's what I've done...
I flashed CM9 with wifi patch and tried the app above. Restarted, no luck. Still didn't work.
I removed my SIM card, restarted in CM9, and Wifi worked! If I put it back in, wifi stops working.
I tried changing country codes with the app above, lost 3G SIM card connectivity. No wifi and no 3G, I though I f***ed up everything.
ODINed back to stock Honeycomb. Got a "no SIM card" error. But wifi worked.
Restarted several times, tried changing country codes several times, still got the "no SIM card" error.
After several attempts by removing/inserting the SIM card and restarting I got it working, finally.
Tried flashing ICS Open Austria. Both Wifi and 3G works!!! However wifi keeps disconnecting every 40 seconds or so.
Tried Wifi Fixer from Market, but all it does is monitor when wifi disconnects and then resets it. It connects again, but 40 seconds later it disconnects again, thus repeating the cycle.
It's still not usable, but it is some progress. I'm afraid to factory reset in official ICS because of brick bug, but I'm willing to do some more steps if anyone got some more ideas
THANK YOU very much for your response petrenj! We're getting somewhere here! :good:

Unfortunately I'm experiencing the same problem as yours. I have 3 tabs and all of them exhibits the problem in ICS. Wifi seems a lot more stable in honeycomb. I already tried xxlpl and xxlpn with/without wifi fix from aorths cm9. I'm also experiencing force reboots when I disable and enable wifi for sometime.

How odd... It's weird that some people have this issue while others don't... Also, I'm beggining to wonder if this is something that aorth or other dev can fix, seeing as it affects several different devices with ICS, and not only our tab. I don't think it's a hardware problem, because wifi works in Honeycomb...
So far, if we want to use wifi in our tabs we must remove the SIM card or just stick with Honeycomb... I've stopped using my tab for a while due to the constant data wipes/flashes and dedicated it to try to fix this issue... I really don't want to restore all my apps twice a day while switching between ICS and HC versions
Are there any P6210 users reading this? If yes, are you able to use wifi in your tab? As the P6210 doesn't have a slot for a SIM card, this shouldn't affect you, right?
Anyway, let's wait for aorth to be back from his trip and introduce this thread to him. He should be able to clarify something to us.
Affects P6210 as well

[Q]Can't enable Wifi.

Hello
I installed [ROM][JB][STABLE] CyanogenMod 10 ♦ B2 a few days ago, before this everything was normal.
After installing the new CM10 rom i couldn't turn on wifi. I figured it was the rom so i restored an older version of android that i new worked
the wai it should. To my surprise i still have the same problem. I wiped the device and rebootet, same problem.
The device tries to turn on wifi but it stickes to the turning on message and nothing happens. I'm starting to think its hardware related.
Any ideas?
-EDIT-
Something new.
I also noticed that i can't access any files on the device. When i open a filemanager it says "forlder empty"
Also if i go to storage under settings it just closes and goes back to the homescreen. I can access the internal storage through ADB.
I am guessing this is related to my wifi problem.
Thanks
Xenodwarf.

When ever I have gotten my TF101 into a situation such as this, I go back to "Easy Flasher"(see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012 ) and put it back to square one. Then I can start my tinkering from there.
That would rule out any possible hardware problems
Edit: Oh. And I'm running the RaymanFX CM10 B2 that you tried, and wifi works fine for me. As well as storage access.
