Hi there everybody, I have friend with a captivate and i would like to try to see if we can get his problem resovled. Whenever he flashed over to a 2.2 Rom the audio quality ( what the person on the OTHER line hears) is terrible! The first one we tried was
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827153
AospMOd space man with the Setiron kernel. Then he called me and i noticed that the the audio i heard sounded literally sounded like a walky talky. It was really really bad.
So then we odin flashed back to stock and it sounded great just like before.
Now he's on AXURA with the default kernel (Setiron i believe anyway) and i dont think it sounds AS bad but it might just be my imagination. But i know it doesnt sound anywhere NEAR as good as the stock rom and kernel, stilll very poor in comparison.
Has anyone noticed this same issue? Anyone have any ideas on possible problems or fixes?
P.s. I am a EVO 4g owner and am active here on the EVO forums, so i know my way around android and adb and all that, so dont worry about scaring me with ideas lol
P.P.s I have no idea how it works on GSM, but i know on CDMA phones, we have a system menu through the dialer that lets us change whats called a vocoder. or basically, the audio codec/compression received from the tower and it specifically and directly is what effects our audio quality. im not sure if there is anything like that in GSM (more that likely not), but i figured id at least bring up the idea.

Yeah my friends and family complain about my voice quality also.. I think something is up with these roms?
It has nothing to do with ROMs and everything to do with modems.

I believe the instructions tell you to flash the JK3 modem file.
It's also worth mentioning that the Captivate has a special Audience voice processing chip that none of the other Galaxy S variants have.
While I'm not 100% sure about it, I don't think any of the leaked 2.2 ROMs or radios are actually using it at the moment. Especially if you are running a i9000 reoriented kernel. That means that instead, voice processing is being done by the modem. So this could be what you're noticing.
Personally, I'm using a i9000 ROM w/ SetiroN's kernel and I have excellent voice quality on both ends. But of course, YMMV.
Is it possible to take a stock kernel and fix just the volume without any other mods? This phone is perfect for the way I use a phone, except the volume is low. I wear hearing aids in both ears and having a little more volume would be great. I know there are custom kernels that have the audio boost in them, but they also have a lot of other things added to and I don't need any thing except the increased volume

Its possible, but what's the point if all the extra things help, but not hurt anything. Just don't use the overclock, you'll never even know besides the fact your phone will be faster and get better battery.
So dilligaf which one are u talking about

just ask one of the devs to compile you a stock kernel with only the audio boost. one of them i'm sure would be nice enough to do it. maybe a tiny donation would push them along.
Thanks fellows for the replys. I just want the stock kernel with nothing but the audio boost and as Roger suggested, I will PM a couple of the developers and see if they can do one for a "Donation". It shouldn't be a major challenge because several of them have it already in their Kernels.
capman231
Getting ready to compile, no donation required(unless you really want to)
Dilligaf your the $hit

here it is. stock, sound boost(all outputs, including headphones). 4.4.4 toolchain
let me know if its too much sound boost. its what im using in my latest kernel.
should still be a little faster than stock too.
dilligaf thank you and I will donate something to the cause. My only problem with the inspire is my hearing impairment (Hearing aids in both ears). I miss almost all of my calls and all of my E-Mail and text notifications. How much louder does your mod make the phone's notifications and ring tones? I hope it's a big improvement because I like this phone and want to keep it.
capman231
25% boost. Any higher and it may start getting distorted, dsp manager can maybe help a little with that, but you need to replace some libs for it to work. I'll make a zip if you want, I'm gonna do some testing with it myself.
edit- do you use any of the TTY or HAC options? if so, theres some sound settings i could increase for those that i saw in the kernel source.
With that much boost, if I can't hear it I won't never be able to hear it. Do you think it would ba smart to have the DSP just in case? Let me know what you find in your testing and I will download it when you get it tested.
capman231
The HAC doesn't work, HTC told me they know about it and it will be fixed in the Gingerbread update coming this quarter. The HAC works on an incoming call but the party on the other end can't hear me. Haven't tried TTY yet.
I am new to this, I downloader the kernel, now what?
I am new to this, I downloaded the sound fix, now what?
Flash it. If your that new, I suggest reading up.
I installed dsp manager and all it did was turn off all sound on my phone. Noone could hear me in calls and had no notification sounds at all. I had to do a full wipe and flash a different rom to get sound back cause it wouldnt come back with just a full wipe and factory reset with that current rom.

Read this thread, I posted that if you install dsp manager, some libs have to be changed out or it won't work. It's just a couple posts above yours
Nothing against di11igaf, cause his rom's are great, but Inspired Saga is the loudest rom I've used.
Not sure what the HAC status is on that rom, but it is a Gingerbread rom from a Desire S.
thanks somuch for the kernal
would your sound boost work with something other than a stock rom?
I am a longtime CM user on AT&T. I bought a Roger's HTC Magic as soon as it came out and immediately put CM on it. I now have an Inspire as well as a Nook Color.
I have a question and I'm not sure if it is just me or if other people are experience this as well. Also, I do not know if it is an AT&T issue or something with CM. Anyway, here it goes....
Sometimes when I try to make a call by selecting the contact and have full signal and everything, I just get a series of constant beeps (like a busy signal almost) and the call never goes through. I can try 10 times in a row and the same thing will happen BUT as soon as I type the number in the dialer, it will immediately go through. The same scenario almost always plays out the exact same.
Does anyone else get this? If so, is it a development problem with CM, an AOSP issue, an At&T issue, or something else?
Thank you ahead of time.
I have never experienced this myself and I am also running cm.

Re:
Really?! I have had it with both my Magic and Inspire. That is wierd. I wonder if anyone else has had this or if I am the odd man out.
I appreciate the quick response.
I'm also running CM (CM 7.0.3) and I haven't had any problems like that.
could it be ur runnin a nightlies cm thats not stable. maybe try cm 7.0.3
Thanks everyone. I will keep you posted.

So you may have read in my last thread that I was haveing problems with eaglesblood its ashamed too because it really is a kick ass ROM but i think it needs some work. No matter what I do I keep loosing my data conection. I just Installed Bionex and it runs great and it had no problem connecting to the network but it doesnt have the cool tweeks that EB has. I think I am going to try cm7 though. The things I really want are first the power controls in the notification bar that was kick ass nex profiles I liked that the ability to customize the lockscreen that was cool too.
I would like to know if it is just me or if others are having this problem too. There has got to be something I am doing wrong I doubt they put out a ROM that has that many problems and All I hear is good thyings about EB so it has to be me. Please someone help me fix this because I am tired of dam stock GB Help Help Help!!!!!
it happens to me too, i just power phone off and on it comes back.
yeah it only happens the first time I power off or reboot after install the rom I see there is a new thread today about data not working on ROMS based on 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 but it works fine on 2.3.3 what I did was a hard reboot and it started working again.

Running rooted stock ICS.
Whenever I get a call I get 2 options: answer and reject
What if I want to ignore the call? You know, not answer but have the phone stop ringing. How do I do this?
Also, the answer call screen sucks. What the hell is this drag the button into the ring crap? Anybdy know how to get rid of sense, or atleast the asnwer screen, without installing a custom rom? I respect the people who make custom roms, but I've never used one that was as stable as stock, so I've a bit hesitant to use them.

Try pressing volume down button when u receive a call
jyo1 beat me to it....
So if it is in my pocket, I take it out and put it face down on a table or press the volume down button? Thanks, I'll try it tomorrow.
I really wish HTC sense was a bit more intuitive. So far all it does is cause non-sense apps to crash and make me relearn how to use an Android phone. I've had two different alarm clock apps crash, as in the alarm didn't go off and I work up to a screen saying the app had crashed, because of sense. I'm really considering switching to a non-sense custom rom. It reminds me of all the problems I had with apps when I used MIUI on my U8800. I really really liked MIUI, but so many apps had problems with it.

WOW, you're really having a bad experience with Stock Sense. Non-intuitive I agree with, too much arcane knowledge but that's the same with all roms/apps. I don't think I ever had an issue with the Alarm clock on either Stock or Custom ROMs, although I tend to use the standard one that's built in, just swap to an analogue face for the clock.
The ignore call thing (flip the phone) I seem to remember from an early TV advert for the Sensation.
Can't comment on MIUI, I tried an early alpha/beta on my old Desire but gave up and went on a round robin of ROMs 'til I settled on CM6/7 for the desire.

At first I used the stock alarm clock. Then when I woke up I kept turning it off instead of snoozing, because I didn't know how the button/ring combo worked. The first few phone calls I got I also didn't understand the button/ring thing. I kept trying to drag the ring to the reject button and couldn't figure out why that was answering the phone. I then tried an alarm clock where you had to do a math problem to snooze it. But the hardest difficulty was just division with some subtraction. I was hoping for at least some algebra, or an option for some easy calculus. Having to do a derivatives/integrals first thing in the morning would get me out of bed.
I'm currently working on my MBA in international management, and one thing I've learned from some case studies is this: If an idiot can't figure out how to use your product without reading the instruction manual, your product has a problem. I'm an idiot and who has had the phone for about a week now and I still am having trouble figuring things out. That's bad product design. My first Android phone I had figured out in a couple of hours.
Don't get me wrong though, I love the Sensation XE. It is an awesome phone, I just really don't like sense. I like things very simple and direct, and Sense is trying to be all magical like a certain fruit phone. Unfortunately, this will probably be the one and only HTC phone I purchase, because of sense. I don't regret this purchase though.

LOL, maths first thing in the morning. Mind you I'm the sort of person that If I set the alarm I usually wake up before it goes off. (subject to beer consumption). Like the style though, just don't have too much Mao Tai (evil tasting drink).

Agree, Arcane knowledge, unfortunately that goes with complexity of the system in question. I'm, like you I suspect, not a great reader of manuals.

I've recently moved to CM10 (AOSP Jelly Bean), it's only in alpha/beta but it's still pretty slick given its status.
I used to be on Virtuous Inquisition on my pre replacement/replacement Sensation. Sense back end with AOSP look and feel.
