thank god, i just got this tablet today and imo its software isnt very good. Old release of kernel source is really nothimg to write home about.

No, unfortunately this is not what the devs need, because devs already have this. This has been out since November 2011 and hasn't been updated ever since I believe because it doesn't support the latest LA3 firmware. The problem is that samsung didn't provide the wifi driver in the source code.
I whis this was something new, but if I'm not mistaken this source code has been out for a wile now and only contains most of the code. But Samsung left out a few peices of the puzzle, mainly the kernel stuff that the devs on this form need to really get going on this tab.

well I downloaded it, and there is a modified date of 1/14 for the kernel. There is a whole bunch of files for wifi in /drivers/net/wireless/, they are b43 files. Maybe when I go home I will set vmware up on my pc and try to build this, but I will probably play Skyrim instead.

nooo...build it haha do you think its a new update all the devs seem to ignore it thinking its an old one but my friend who developed vegacomb sed its an update to the last with corrections or something haha they are very ignorant on here haha
The linked news articles both date back to November - completely worthless, they're announcing the original source release.
However there are now three source code drops, one of which appears to be China-specific. One of the others might be new source.
As to a bunch of b43 stuff in drivers/net/wireless - not useful. The b43 driver is for Broadcom's recent desktop chips. Useless for mobile devices, even ones with a Broadcom wifi chipset (which the Tab 7 Plus does not even have.)
Now if there's an AR6K driver - that would be interesting.
Also, this doesn't belong in Development, it belongs in General.
there is an ar9k driver, might that be backwards compatible with an ar6k?

There's an open source driver for PCI/USB AR6k chips - but I'm not sure if an open source driver for mobile AR6k chips exists. (Same idea as the difference between the b43 drivers and the drivers for mobile BCM4329/4330 chips)
Also, mobile wifi drivers almost always have customizations for the host hardware, like mapping the GPIO interrupts correctly - not knowing these device-specific GPIO customizations presents a challenge.
From what I am reading, that is for mobile ar6k chips. Don't get me wrong, I don't know anything about GPIO interrupts or anything like that. "Openmoko™ is a project dedicated to delivering mobile phones with an open source software stack." This is what it says on their website, it also has an image of some android device. "ar6k is the GPL driver for the Atheros AR6000 mobile 802.11bg chipset used on the OpenMoko." is what is says on the on the link I provided to the driver source. I am not a developer. I have written some applications, compiled and modified code, but I am not proficient at it. That being said, to me, all signs are pointing to source for a mobile driver.

Some of those might be useful - but won't have device-specific customizations which may prove important.

I have not returned kaiser in the hope of being able to install Google's Android OS on kaiser. Hardware is great, but software/drivers suck.
It should be fairly easy because its open source and the first phone that HTC is bringing out is supposed to have the same processor.
Your thoughts?
I'm hoping that becomes a reality. Open source development would open up the floodgates! Imagine TouchFLO with an OpenGL 3D environment.... can't wait to see what happens here.

If Android is open source, I don't see why someone with compiler knowledge couldn't make it run on any ARM based handheld...
Because booting an OS kernel requires extensive access to hardware specifications, wich is not what Androïd is about at all.
The Android SDK is now available. They have also announced that they're giving away $10 million to developers that build apps for the platform. More info here:

I would love to have beryl on pocket pc. I've been waiting for years since I first saw beryl on youtube. The closest thing we have is the HTC Cube. Can't wait .

I sure would like to see this happen. Since HTC is a partner in the open handset alliance I could see them releasing drivers for it. ... maybe...
Problem is - OS source or not, the hardware specs for many of the ICs in the Kaiser (esp. the Qualcomm MSM) are not publically available, which means that it isn't possible to write a driver for them.
This is why, for example, the Linux ports to previous HTC devices are (relatively) crippled - drivers for parts of the hardware can't be written because the hardware specs are not available.

cant see why you can't just take the msm7200 chipset specs off of the qualcomm site and build something. I mean it has generic arm processors and the other information should be able to gleaned from the windows app itself(radios,etc..)

In fact the radio processor (ARM9) already runs a linux like rtos: L4 micro kernel and Iguana embedded OS. See here and here.
I think the chances might be relatively good:
1. HTC has announced they are building android based phones.
2. For the next year or so, chances are that available phone hardware is gonna be pretty much the same as what is available today (give or take).
So it follows that there are good chances that HTC will do most of the work for us. They introduce a new P4551 running Android, you guys do your ROM ripping magic, and take all the various drivers and introduce it into a generic Android ROM. Voila! Android on the Kaiser.
That said, who says Android hardware support on HTC devices is going to be any better than hardware support for WM6? HTC has already proved you can release a phone for a mature platform, with plenty of history, using almost no hardware acceleration for anything. Who says Android phones from HTC will be any better in that respect?

This is a very cool OS. I'm sure some of our great coders around XDA DEVELOPERS can come up with all kinds of ways to use this on many different phones. If they get the money more power to them. They deserve it. At least in my nubee opinion!

I think we do is enumerate the components of G-tablet using the kernel source info.

One thing to note though, is that he said this:

I'm sure someone tried the same thing, and the harmony kernel didn't work on our Vega tablets, either. Hopefully this should work with little changes to implement.
But, it saves us having to wait for Advent to try and create a honeycomb rom in the future.

Work is not being done at the moment as far as I know, for 2 reasons
Google AOSP has not released sources for Honeycomb yet
And its likely that a lot of backporting will need to take place for it to work on the vega (this will be assisted if the vega or a clone get an official honeycomb rom soon). Backporting is hard work and can take a lot of time.
It is likely we will see Honeycomb, but don't expect anything soon.
I must say I rather thought the AOSP would have been released by now. I wonder what the hold up is....

So I came across a Tegra driver package "Linux for Tegra release 12 alpha 1" that was released on June 29 2011, within this zip file were files with the word "Harmony" slapped all over the place..
I guess I'm just curious to know if this driver package is related to the Tegra 2 drivers that we've been anxiously waiting for.
It would be wonderful if one of our fantastic developers here on XDA would be kind enough to browse through this package and weigh in as to whether this is what we're needing to make the G Tablet unleash its full potential.

I took a look at both the drivers and the Linux for Tegra release 12 Alpha 1 Release page date 29 Jun 11 http://developer.nvidia.com/content/linux-tegra-release-12-alpha-1-released. The release notes clearly state that is supports the Tegra 200 series soc:
"Tegra Linux Driver Package supports development of platforms running:
NVIDIA® Tegra™ 200 series computer-on-a-chip"
The driver package scripts have code for flashing the system and bootloaders for both harmony (ours) and ventana (newer) tegras. The tegra drivers appear to include numerous codex and the libs contain libnvmm_video.so, libnvmm_videorenderer.so, libnvmm_graphics.so all dated 29 Jun 11.
I don't know enough about linux/android to tell if these are newer drivers or the same as our curent Froyo drivers, but now that we know that these support both harmony & ventana, I'm hoping someone who knows more about linux/android drivers/libraries/kernals could look & tell us if this is what they need to continue development on HC!!!!

Has there been any progress on this? Its seems as though just as I received my gTablet the devs enthusiasm towards it has declined drastically(understandably).
I remember reading a few days ago about a project that was having quite a lot of progress with writing their own drivers, but since then I was unable to find it.
Can anyone give me some info, or at least point me in the right direction, about this project, or any other current Honeycomb project. I know I saw another project on a parallel device with working camera, I wonder if its the same one as the original.

I want to port it to my hannspad, but with kernel.org down its a bit tricky getting a vanilla .38 kernel to diff against.
You know the Dell Streak 7 has Honeycomb 3.2 fully functional and they use the same CPU. Why not pull the driver files from their rom?

Use case
Ignoring free hardware for a moment, I'm looking for a phone (for daily use) where I can build almost all of the firmware/software (no binary blobs apart from the baseband firmware) running on (at least) the main processor from source. My interest lies heavily on the driver side of things.
Devices considered
Apart from the GTA04 (no BLE) and Neo900 (early prototype phase), Samsung's Z1/2/3 devices seem most promising. (If I missed anything that can be used on a daily basis, please correct me.) I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (i9505), but have only seen old blog posts about Tizen having been spotted running on it.
Questions
Has anyone looked at the source code provided for these devices and determined how much of a workable image can be built from it?
