First, make sure you have flashed the latest cwm0302);
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804
then go into cwm and run "permission fix", reboot phone.
If that didn't fix your issue, then download superuser pack and follow instruction:
http://www.toms-world.org/android/page/rootinstructions
Good luck.
Same thing happened to me. Flashed 1.4 and lost root... Fixing permissions did not help. Is Odin my only way to get root back?

EDIT: make sure you mount /system before flashing. Also did you Odin the latest cwm and use this to fix permission??

Bingo... I forgot to mount system before flashing superuser
Thanks

I used to run custom ROM serendipity 5.11. Decided to give the official stock froyo a try. So, I flashed it to JF6 and installed I897UCKB1 on my captivate. Now, I miss the root privileges and also the stock ROM is still not smooth. There is a big improvement from 2.1 but not there if I compare with serendipity. So, is there any way I can root and install lagfix on my stock I897UCKB1 2.2 captivate? Please help

There are many many threads going on here that covers this. Either get a custom ROM from Cog4 or Torch 1.5. If not then use SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760 for lagfix

I tried rooting the phone the traditional way and it tells me the update.zip is not e_signatured (or some thing like that) verified. How do we root the NEW Froyo Stock ROM??
Greatly appreciate any assistance on this!!!

The assistance was in the post right above your own.
The reason the old update.zip method does not work is because Froyo uses 3e recovery, which requires the update.zip files to be signed. The SuperOneClick root bypasses that and directly gives you root. After this you can install CWM, and flash the supercurio voodoo kernel, which gets you the lagfix, and rids you of 3e recovery, all at the same time.

You can install the voodoo kernel via odin, but that can't be done straight from the phone. It is also packaged as a CWM flashable update.zip, so you could do it that way, but you still need a computer to root it first. Without root, you can't get into a non 3e recovery, and without that, you can't flash the package straight from the phone.

Prior to the current stock 2.2, i used serendipity custom rom on my phone. i used AIO toolbox for captivate to flash serendipity custom rom. can i use the same tool to root my 2.2 phone? i am very new to this whole stuff. i see that this particular voodoo kernel provided significant performance improvement on the stock I897UCKB1 captivate. If you can provide step by step guidance that would be great. thanks
I'm rooted and have the 3e problem....i go into recovery with CWM but update fails...tried the 3e patch that accepts unsigned but sbin recovery is read only won't let me delete/overwrite....tried an emu to chmod but says permission denied lol....i must be missing something.... I'm familiar with os but can't seem to figure this. Only thing stopping me from voodoo lagfix is damn recovery file not being deleted

ok well this should do it:
1. power off phone and take out battery
2. open odin on your pc
3. hold volume down button and connect to pc, should show download mode and should show up in odin, let go of volume down
4. put battery back in, uncheck 'auto reboot' and put the CWM file in PDA
5. push start and let odin flash the file, should only take a few seconds
6. unplug phone from pc, then remove battery
7. put battery back in
8. hold volume up, home button and power button until you see 'Samsung' then let go of power button
that should get you into CWM and you can work from there, since you don't have a custom kernel to make CWM 'stick' on your phone do not let the phone boot up or you will need to odin CWM again... you basically get one try with it
That must be my problem i will try

I am running DroidXcon's EE4 rooted w/ CWM voodoo lagfix recovery. It has worked great for many months. Had to replace phone and flashed to same ROM and it has been working. I have lost my root. Superuser won't get past the gaining root phase of installation, Titanium can't gain root access.
I still have CWM
Is there a zip file/kernel I can install via CWM to re-gain root? Or will I have to wipe the phone to stock and re-flash the ROM?
Just flash the kernel found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104634

Once your completely stock flash CWM in Odin one time then boot directly into it don't let the phone boot up our you'll have to reflash CWM. Then flash this file and you'll have root

I followed the instructions and gain root but it doesnt stay. If I do the anything I lose root.
What do you mean "you lose root?" Once you have flashed the Superuser Pack to the phone you have permanent root, it doesn't just "go away" like "poof" it's gone.
However, CWM (Clockwork MOD) does go away unless you load a custom kernel or deactivate (CHMOD to 000) "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh".
I dont remember which app I install but it will say you dont have root even though I just rooted and it said I did,I reboot and clockwork is gone. Now I am having a hard time getting back. Guess I might go back too EE4 take update and go and see what happens from there. Right now Im stuck on the samsung logo after I followed the directions.
Ok I just loaded the ep4d bloat rooted version and it started and will just freeze what I dont want.
Nope boot loop. Gonna check out the other thread then restart everything. oh well
I found that if I use the app Quick reboot and try to go into recovery it removes root.

I'm pretty sure you should be able to flash the SuperSU.zip from Chainfire and get it back. Not a 100% sure though.
