[Q][Help]Nexus S major problems - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

SOLVED
Well I hope my Nexus S didn't brick. Well I will start off with what happened. I've been running ICS Slim for a while and I noticed it started to become very buggy. Been busy for a few days so I havnt had time to fix anything. Well today I had some free time so I was going to just connect my SNS to my pc to transfer important files and pictures. My PC (Windows 7) kept giving me "USB Device not recognised" errors. I have correctly installed the adb drivers and have connected my SNS to the same computer. I also tried another connection usb cable to see if my original was defective but no avail. I also tried my netbook with both usb cords becuase I also had this SNS connected to the netbook before (Win7 Also) with correct adb drivers.... still nothing. I then go to rom manager download codename android and successfully install the rom. Tried everything again and still no connection. After shutting down the SNS and strating it again multiple times and trying multiple things my SNS went into "safe mode". Curious I thought there must be something wrong with some system files that don't get written over when a new rom is installed with a factory reset. I decided to turn off my SNS and turn it on one more time and I get this screen which ive never seen before.

Samsung Nexus S i9020a Koodo
FIX:
had the same problem. DEFINITELY FIXED NOW.
Whenever, I connected my Nexus S to any OS a USB Storage Mode dialogue used to pop up and once I clicked Turn On, the PC would find the mass storage. About a week ago, this functionality has stopped completely. I plug the USB cable and nothing happens but the phone starts charging.
I have read many posts about this. I have tried the removing the battery, Rebooting, Trying the boot loader screen, erasing the USB storage, resetting to factory settings, Erasing and dismounting the SD Card from the Boot loader, cleaning the USB Port, trying different USB cables (nokia, parrot, original Nexus etc)....
What has worked for me was the NEEDLE trick. Get a needle and bend the USB hub beneath the phone towards to the top. (What I realized is that it was pushed all the way to the bottom, lifting it up about 1 mm has centered it). I plug the USB and pops up the USB storage mode interface.
So, it turns out a hardware issue, probably a doggy USB port on the NEXUS easily gets disturbed. Using different cables usually helps the problem, especially cheap cables tend to damage the port easier.
So, I would recommend every one to use proper USB cables; the original nexus cable, a nokia cable or decent quality cable. (Do not use the ones from cheap car chargers etc).
Secondly, do not reset your phone for nothing.
Thirdly, keep your phone clean.
I hope this information helps someone. Thanks.

[Q][Help]USB Problems
I just removed my simcard and reinserted it again and my phone started normally.... weird...
But still at problem #1. Cannot mount usb. Windows 7 Still says "USB device not Recognised". My guess is that the usb port is broken. Its quite common apparently so i'm gunna see if Koodo will fix it.
Before I send it in should I go to a stock rom, stock baseband, and lock bootloader. or can I send it in with CyanogenMod 9?

Charge won't connect to computer

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers several times and I have made sure my computer is set to automatically download drives for new devices. But despite all this I can not get my computer to recognize my Droid Charge. Every time my computer tries to instal the drivers for the phone it either stops with out doing any thing or it ends with an error. It keeps saying that the device has malfunctioned and Windows can't recognize it.
I'm also getting a code 10 error - Windows says the device cannot start
Try the basic troubleshooting methods..
Try different cables, Try different computers/laptop, Try different drivers (i realized i had the wrong drivers the whole time)
Eliminate possible causes of the problem.

I tried two different cables and three different USB ports and two different drivers and none of that helped.
I don't know what the problem was but it finally fixed itself. I booted into download mode and inserted the USB cable for about the 9000th time and it suddenly started working again.
No it started doing the same thing this morning. I tried connecting my Captivate & it's doing the same thing but my mp3 player connects fine. I think I might reinstall Windows and see if that fixes the problem.
I think you can only use the OEM USB to Odin the phone. I would also suggest using a USB port that is in the back of the computer. Make sure it's one of the motherboard mounted ones. Not an add on USB.
Also make sure the phone is in USB debugging mode. [settings/applications/development--usb debugging]
Also try installing the drivers as admin.
Sometimes virus scanner might interfere with software operation. Although I've never had to do this, try temporarily disabling it when trying to install drivers. Also when running Odin.
But what about download mode? Does Odin see it on a com port if you connect it?
Besides drivers did you install everything like the samsung utility? Did you check in device manager of windows to see if an error there appears and maybe a fix? Ive heard someone else post about this. Did you disable usb debug on the phone and make sure mass storage is set?
Instead of doing your computer it would be easier to do a factory reset on your phone or revert back to stock in recovery.

OK and one last thing to try as it is easier than re installing windows. Wipe cache and dalvik, fix permissions. re start.
I have used different cables besides the samsung and it worked. Also my phone isnt working all of a sudden. In cwm I went and mounted system . wiped all cache, fixed permission. Re started and it worked.
LOL after typing all this I see it does it for all devices. Could you try and restore windows to a previous date that worked then re install the drivers and see if it works?

It was just working a few days ago and I was using a different cable.
I tried using one of the back USB ports and it worked once & then when I tried it again it had quit working again.
The phone's in USB debugging mode.
I install everything in administrator mode
I'm running without a virus scan app right now (Yeah I know I know...)
I was using Bit Defender but the piece of garbage deleted a few files that were completely harmless like one of the files to root the Epic 4G.
The one really strange thing is that every time I plug the phone into the computer it has to look for ,download ,and reinstall the drivers for the phone and most of the time it fails with an error. I'm not sure why it's doing this but I really think that's where the problem is. If I unplug my printer or scanner Windows doesn't have to reinstall the drivers for them when I plug them back in.
My Cowon mp3 player works perfectly fine using the same ports so the ports are working...

Nope it isn't seen in download mode either

Haven't tried that yet

There's an exclamation mark in the device manager. I've tried telling it to update the drivers from there but Windows keeps telling me that the best driver is already installed
Ive heard someone else post about this. Did you disable usb debug on the phone and make sure mass storage is set?
I've tried disabling and re-enabling USB debugging more times than I can remember

I would rather not. That would delete some of the apps I just installed. If I'm gonna have to reinstall them any way I'd might as well just reinstall Windows. Also I might revert to a time when I still had Bit Defender installed and I would rather reinstall Windows than deal with that over paranoid crapware

Tried wiping dalvic cache battery stats & fixed permissions and it still isn't working. I tried uninstalling it in device manager and scanned for hardware changes and it still comes up as an "unknown device"
The only thing that happened was that Microsoft offered to install the software for my mouse that I had never bothered to install.
I'm really thinking that there is some kind of problem with my Windows installation.Something has become corrupted or broken.
I don't usually use Windows update and I have been using it extensively this go-round. Maybe Windows Update broke something (Wouldn't be the first time!).
Ok one last idea and might be crazy. Didnt see if you tried it or not. Cant hurt but do phone as factory reset of the phone and wipe the cache. Could something be installed on the phone that makes it not be recognized for some reason? Really just throwing stuff out there as it is easier than installing windows again.
That or like you said virus scanner or something is screwing with your computer.

Yeah all out of ideas. Atleast everybody tried.
This is almost related. I spent ten days trying to figure out how to make the AllShare app work. I finally got it done, but I tinkered with my computer so much that when I finished, I could no longer restore to a previous version.
I had never used that feature on this computer, but I figured that I could undo all the crap I did and start over from the day I started tinkering if I restored to the day I started. Every restore point failed!
I went to this forum and asked why restore did not work.
http://www.sevenforums.com/
I was ready, like you, to re-install Windows, but someone walked me through how to get it working correctly. I thought the phone was complicated, but Windows 7 leaves the phone in the dust when it comes to complicated.
Maybe if you go on there and post a thread about a device not being recognized you will get some help. Tons of good tutorials there too.

Dealing with rooting & installing ROMs on the Charge on the other hand had me shaking in my boots. Nowhere nearly as easy or simple as it is on the Epic 4G!

Boot loop with usb malfunction error

Hi Guys,
I need some advice.
I bought a Skyrocket on eBay that was rebooting, I figured I would just flash it with odin to stock or via cwm and fix it but when I got it I noticed that the first owner already had CWM installed. 5.8.1.3
Let me list the issues and steps taken.
When booting to the preinstalled CWM it reboots as the logo pops up.
When booting normally it will reboot after the Samsung logo.
When in Download mode i receive a usb device malfunction error on my pc, I tried 3 systems 3 different drivers and 3 different usb cables.
My power button is not stuck as I can put the battery in without it turning if self on, I have to manually turn it on myself.
I took it apart and its clean no water damage.
I then read about the tooth pick fix and for the first time ever it was detected today on my pc but before I got to flash the error came up, usb device has malfunctioned.
I was wondering if maybe the first owner was flashing cwm and the usb port malfunctioned and caused the soft brick?
Do you guys think this phone can be saved? eBay has the usb module selling, my rev is 4.5.
Do you think if I buy that I will be able to fix it?
I'm in south America so if I do buy it I wont get until January as shipping from China takes time so I'm asking for advice before I waste time.
From the image attached you can see that it still has the official Samsung firmware but the counter has the number 1.
Could that have been from when the first owner flashed CWM?
Any advice is welcomed.

First off how long does it take for the actual on USB malfunction at a pop up
Second I would look into vincom method for updating without USB or is it dead USB 1 of them too
Third I would try flashing cwm in the recovery tar because it very quick and really simple try to find a way to make the USB stable
Anif a USB replacement you're more than likely that the solder to the board hopefully it might be something simple however I've found the it can very difficult
Good luck

It only takes a second before it pops up with the error, ill do a search for the dead or no usb method.

I was able to fix it, for future googlers.
The usb port seems defective and ad such gave the error usb device has malfunctioned when in download mode.
To fix it I took a shaved down match stick as I was out of tooth picks and gently pushed up the tongue of the usb port.
After that odin saw it and I flashed it back to stock.
Phone fine now, ill just order the usb module online and change it but for now I have a working S2

Silly question...are you in Download Mode now? Easy way to achieve is to pull and reinsert battery, then hold down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable.
If you are there and no COM port connection, then are you using a different USB port (or PC) since last time? It is said that Download Mode does not like USB 3.0.
Hope this helps.

No sir phone it is not getting in download mode.
Like I said last night it was going into download mode today it is not.
Some hardware is detected but com port is not being detected. No samsung port in device manager.
I think the bootloader is corrupted. As I said I opened the PDA file in bootloader section and then very very stupidly pressed the start button.
It flashed 17 percent and then stopped. I then again even more stupidly (like it is even possible to be this much if an idiot, but evidently I am) disconnected pulled the battery out and tried to get into download mode.
It did screen was messed up showing rainbows but Odin detected the phone.
Then I made this post after the first reply I tried to go into download mode so something is detected but not the com port.
So I think it is safe to say that the bootloader is corrupted. Now is there a way to repair the bootloader without the ort jag?
Thank you very much for your answer and your time.

Download mode is supposed to be independent of the bootloader, so if you still cannot get into Download Mode, you should luck out with a jig.

Wait you mean even if I have messed up the bootloader I can still get into download mode. Wow this is great news. Thank you very much.
Can you please tell me if I can create this jig thingie, do you know a guide because I am pretty sure I am never going to find one here in my country.
Thank you very much for your help
I have seen some videos looks pretty simple just put a 300 k ohm resistor between the 4th and 5th leg.
I will try and make the jig and post the result tomorrow.

The Unbrick package rescues half-trashed bootloaders (among other things) from what I read in other parts of the forum, so you should be fine. You may, however, need to flash a back to root package (my mirror has option C, albeit in an extracted mess) in order to get system working properly again. When I had my Infuse, it was the Rogers version, so I could never use the AT&T packages (so I never knew first-hand the difference between the unbrick and back-to-stock).
Can cross that bridge when you come to it. Hope this helps.
Okay I am having trouble making a jig. I could not find a proper 301 k resistor to I stiched 3 100k resistors. Somehow it is not working. Maybe the USB connector us faulty. It had four connectors on the main side and 1 on the other.
I will change the USB connector and try again.
Thank you very very much

Hmmm, that should work... 301K is pretty specific but there are a lot of variance with resistors, and unless the variance is being amplified by daisy-chaining three 100K's, there shouldn't be a problem. If you have a multimeter, you should check the resistance readout to see if it is off by much.
If not, then it comes back to my original theory. Jacked bootloaders can be modified/restored via ODIN or Heimdall, although the problem screen you have (in the end, a really jacked bootloader) isn't the same as what I was going on (which was the wrong, partially functioning bootloader).
I thought the Download/Odin mode was called off at the Modem level (before the bootloader), but I may be wrong. If so (that is, if your jig does not work), you may need a JTAG service after all.
Sorry for any wasted effort.
I could not find a 5 pin USB connector, I tore apart at least 7 USB cables and all of them ONLY had 4 pins.
I think I am going to have to tear apart the original cable of my S3 and I really really don't want to do that.
I will post the final results on Friday evening
Okay I found a 5 pin connector and made a jig but it did not work. Looks like I a going to have to pay for a jtag service.
Thank you again for all your help
Fixed my Phone
All right I have finally fixed it. The problem was I had some newer or I don't know older driver versions installed. I installed i997 Kies mini and installed the driver that came with that software.
And as soon as I connected the phone while pressing Vol Up + Vol Down computer detected it and odin detected it too. Then I installed your provided firmware.
It is okay now. It is working, there is a rainbow effect every time I turn it on but that is okay. Only recovery is not working. I can't go into recovery.
Everything else is working fine. Thank you very much for all your help.

OPO is Hardbrick and laptop doesnt recognize it what so ever... Please help!

Hi all,
I was in class today and put my phone in my bag. At the break when i looked at it it didnt respond to anything. I tried charging, plugging to my computer and nothing helped. I started reading online and there are a ton of guides that mainly use COLORS to recover from that situation.
My issue is that my laptops won't recognize OPO at all. I tried multiple times on both Win10 and Win7, plugging in and out, using the + button and all that. I get two errors. On the Win7 under device manager i see under Universal Serial Bus controllers - Unknown Device (with the yellow ! sign). On Win10 i see - unknown USB Device (device descriptor request failed).
I cannot even start using the color method before either computers recognize my device as HSUSB_BULK or Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
Please can you help? i dont know what to do next and i wasted like 6 hours today...
thanks in advance!
Ivy OPO has, a number of times, been working perfectly, had reasonable charge, and when I go to use, will not respond/wakeup. A few of these times the led was red, and plugging into power changed nothing.
I was able to get power back up normally, after holding both volume keys and pressing the power button and holding all three for about 8-15 seconds, after which the phone booted into the system.
I have no idea why it does this from time to time. Maybe 4 times now since January.

Plus that post!
It's a very very good thing you get the USB devices with the exclamation marks. On some USB3.0 ports etc it doesn't show up. Go for the windows 7 pc to recover as that was the thing that worked for me.
If you get the drivers sorted out you are in business. If it doesn't work try another USB port, preferably directly connected to the mainboard. Also take the original cable. I've had another broken cable last week, charge and sometimes data and this is something you do not want to happen during flashing
A lot of frustration and time loss, but when that is over you flash the device and you are set to go. Been there done that on the most difficult persons phone... my wife.

I tried this but still stuck on loop in Win10. in Win7 i get RELINK-...Qualcomm 9008 which is the modem only and not the phone itself. whenever I try to flash with the Oneplusrestore toolkit or the Mdm chinese toolkit on WIN 10, that wretched 8974_msimage_mbn just keeps on looping and looping over and over, it just disconnects and reconnect the usb. I'm already using admin rights, still the same. I followed the instructions step by step. Drivers are installed(the same drivers people who successfully unbricked their phones used).I need a solution for the loop.

[SOLVED] Lenovo TAB 2 A7-20F Hard Brick (Dead)

I wanted to update Lenovo TAB 2 A7-20F trough SP Flash tool since Android 4.4.2 is really old and kind of useless. I started flashing Lollipop update but after some time flash tool showed error that I can't remember. The device got bootloop. I have seen that I have putted to "Download Only" mode in flash tool instead of "Firmware Update" or "Download Only + Format All", so I tought that's the reason why my device got bricked . Now Instead of just flashing ROM again I used Format Tab in SP flash tool and formated Tablet. And now it's hard bricked. It's not charging or turning on. Not detected by PC when pluged . I tried opening it and removing battery and trying different key combo to put it in META mode since I think preloader is formated as well. If anyone has any idea how can I fix it please replay. I watched youtube tutorials that didn't help . I probably missed something so send help . I guess I have to learn hard way.

Ugh...
I think I have problem. I know for kcolo and gnd method but just take a look at this picture.
This is motherboard of my tablet. Most of points aren't labeled and bruteforcing them could damage motherboard. And there is this big heatsink I guess so , maybe it's under there...
I did find stock ROM, only problem is that it's not detected in device manager at all.
Here is the image the closeup image without heatsink.
These are all contact point I could find. There are 9 total. 4 of them near USB port , 3 near battery plug at bottom that you can't rly see but they are unlabeled , and 2 more that I am not sure about what they do. One of them is near camera and other near sd card reader. Not even sure if these are possible test points.
I was able to find and join kcolo ( volume + and volume - points in my case). Now the problem is that after installing driver and trying to flash I get error 4032 in sp flash tool. I tried older versions but they don't support it;
I tried different drivers but didn't help. If anyone can help pls replay.

Can you provide a picture or explain what you did? I cant seem to find the kcolo/colo and ground pins i need to connect. I would aprechiate it a lot if you gave me an explanation on the process!
You kinda destroyed the whole software by using the format tab. If you didn't, you could've still reinstalled the stock ROM. I have a Lenovo Tab 2 A7-10F that was bricked itself, but I have no idea what's going on

Im in a similar situation, i flashed a Lenovo Tab 2 A7-10F rom at Lenovo Tab A7-20F. Tablet wont get recognized by a computer, nor boot nor show any signs of life. Its like this for 1,5 year. Is it possible to bring it back to life?

It’s complicated. The Lenovo Tab 2 A7-10F and 20F are different tablets, so the ROMs compatible with either won’t be compatible with the other. First, make sure the battery is somewhat charged. The energy transfer should depend on the hardware, not the software. I did unbrick my 10F recently but I was able to power it on and the PC recognised it, although it took some time to find the right drivers. Assuming you’re using Windows, have you checked in Device Manager to see if the device is present? I had the same issue where I couldn’t interact with the tablet from the PC but that was because of the absence of drivers. I don’t know precisely what can be done if it doesn’t even turn on, but it could just be a dead battery (that is, if you haven’t tried to hook it up to the charger).
I was able to completely fix and update tablet to Android 5. The golden points are located at back of the motherboard:
The two points at the bottom when connected should make your device recognized in device manager.
After that you install mediatek drivers onto that device and flash stock rom with SP Flash tool.
I unbricked it more than 2 months ago but I was lazy to write this so sorry for waiting.

Thanks for the help but unfortunately I've already lost all hope. Ive tried everything. I don't really care about the device that much so it doesn't bother me.

Have you tried the method I showed above? Maybe your drivers are not installed correctly. Windows should detect device even without drivers and you will hear the connected sound, just like you pluged your USB in.
