Hey guys,
As you all know, the reason for the limited development in the Infuse and many other Samsung device forums is Samsung's lack of care for developers. People here at XDA have created a petition for Samsung. Here is the OP by codeworkx: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23104279&postcount=9571
Here is the link for the petition - http://www.change.org/petitions/sam...t-achieve-full-potential-of-purchased-devices

Just curious: which manufacturers are notably supportive of developers? Because I only know of those which are notorious for lacking support

Not in the past year - in early-mid 2011 they started locking their bootloaders.
After the backlash - They claimed they would stop doing it, but then the Vivid launched in October with a locked bootloader.
Sony, however, have gone "above and beyond" in terms of supporting developers, as a result their 2011 lineup is fully supported by CM, and they are the ONLY manufacturer to release alpha and beta tests officially (no leaks, actual official releases) complete with kernel source code.
My next phone will be a Sony or a Nexus unless things change.

Actually, given Sony's traditional track record, them buying out Ericsson's share worries me.
Sony's handling of their mobile division (at least with respect to developer communities) has been, well... Very un-Sony-like, and it has been my assumption that Ericsson had a role in that.

I never took into account Ericsson's hand being the one reaching out to the developer community... i always just assumed Sony had started listening to their buyers. I guess I should have known better. Well this definitely doesn't help me in deciding what OEM to go with next.

I was screwed by Sony when I sent my Unlocked Xperia X10 in for repair and they sent me a Brand New phone, but it's locked to Rogers and can't get an unlock code anywhere for it. So I took the opportunity to get a new phone. I picked the Infuse up at Amazon last week for $129. I waited very impatiently to get it today and I have to say this phone is ridiculous! I can't get over the screen and how fast it is. I have no regrets at all and will be a proud owner for a very long time I'm sure. Next comes rooting it and throwing Infused on it possibly. Have a good one guys!

Yeah sony needs to think long and hard about their product road map. Their cell phones are so late to the game. Doesn't bring any UI that is truly exceptional. I was a hardcore SE fan, but the Xperia X1 was such a turn off.... I love the Sony build quality but avast the software is lacking.... ((
I really like their Design of the Arc, but probably updates are far and nothing in between.... sad....
But totally glad you joined the Galaxy S class!

The phone has been out less than a month. It is also possible we will not see as many developers as a more Samsung flagship phone like Galaxy S, Galaxy S II. But I am sure we will have enough developer support to make it much better than stock. It is already better than stock with the few ROM's we have now. Custom kernel's will be a huge bonus. One developer here already said he is working on that.

yeah they will likely release the attain before they consider gb on the infuse and captivate, it is a shame because samsung clearly can deliver it if they had control over the release schedules. hopefully the nexus s 4g and evo2/evo3d will entice them to release gb slightly earlier. att would be soo much better if they had some real competition in america. t-mo is too small in america and the nexus isnt a big enough seller, verizon doesnt get updates for samsung, they manage to be slower than att in that area and motorola doesnt have an official gb on any platform that i know of yet (driox2? maybe havent looked into it) i think for att to get there act together and deliver updates when they are available from the manufacturers it will take sprint to release gb on the evo/evo2 since that phone is soo well recognised. untill there is some outside competition they will hold back updates to artificially inflate the value of the next big phones

I haven't been following the for and against arguments for this but my first thought is that it will raise prices across the board. Eliminating the carriers that offer more inexpensive options can't be good for consumers.
I doubt it will raise prices for att customers, we'll just get better service, and an actual lte rollout. Tmobile customers are the ones who are getting screwed.

This is Samsung's proprietary filesystem, isn't it? I believe they use it on all of their devices that require a filesystem. It's sad that the software developers working for Samsung didn't stop to think that a FAT based filesystem (RFS) might not be the best option for their Android based devices.
I'm wondering what you guys think. Will the gingerbread update be the last official update the g2x gets? Or do you think it will get ice cream sandwich and beyond?

The alpha omega update? This was the case with the HTC shadow, just 1 update, it's first and last.
Any way what would be great and keep our G2x top of the line and extend it's life would be if nvidia were to release driver updates for the CPU/GPU, as they do for their PC graphics cards.
Nvidia is awesome at releasing timely updates of their video drivers, hopefully they consider doing it for their tegra chips.
One of the key points of doing a stock Android is to have a constant stream of releases. Once the bugs are worked out....updating to the most current android should not be a lot of new work.
The G2x has enough horsepower to run many more updates than just one or two
If not then it will be ported.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I hope we do get more updates.
The thing is that LG is new in this game and I really hope they start doing best practices from other businesses, maybe Nvidia can help them push a little as well as T-Mobile to keep releasing updates even though that T-Mobile is less than likely to push them since they want to sell the last new thing.
But yeah, if they wise they'll and really care about their customers and want to position theirselves as one of the smartphone companies then they'll have to have the updates coming.

Honestly I don't understand why this phone couldn't get multiple updates. I thought the whole reason for it having basic Android was so that it could be easier to udate. As well, rumor mill has it that later versions of Android are going to require a dual core, well this phone has everything under the hood for it to have a long shelf life. I hope they do right by this phone.

I think it remains to be seen if this phone is even a viable product. Will the phone ever be back in stock and saleable from T-Mo?
If a jillion more G2xs are sold then we will see many updates and a bunch of dev support. But, if the phone is never brought back then we are stuck in a dead end with a failed experiment.
I believe LG's future as trusted top-tier brand is at stake, but I'm still not certain they'll ever get it right.
If this update fixes all the issues and allows tmobile to resume selling their stock, than it will probably see more updates.
If after all this time they still can't get it right, and tmobile refuses to sell their stock? She'll be dead Jim. Of course this is all speculation... Nobody knows.

Crack smoking dreaming. The G2x is still being sold, that the actual web-store of T-Mobile does not have any instock is meaningless. They still are supporting their distribution channel, so those partners are not feeling left out in the cold. Amazon, Wirefly, Costco...they all still sell them. It is lame, very lame to define selling the phones from T-mobile as just via their webstore.
If you were selling phones for T-mobile as a third-party vendor, would you be happy that T-mobile hoards the supply? Or would you raise the price to make your vendors prices seem much better than they could do directly.
Thinking that LG that makes lots of phones, is going down by the simple fact that a backlight turned up to max brightness shows some bleed. Turning to max brightness in a darkroom even to watch movies is not likely.
Users already report that custom ROMs fix most if not all the software caused problem.
So your theory is that LG can not duplicate, or even outright use as basis other coders solutions to fix the problems. What are you 15?
Actually I'm 48, I've been working in IT since the early 90s and I haven't smoked any crack in months.
People keep fliping out on the G2X and calling it a failure. Here's a secret. Less than 1% of all the G2X's sold have been returned to TMO, I would say that's pretty awesome and does not signify any major issues. People are not screaming about the Sidekick 4G being a major flop even though you can't get it in stores or on the web right now either. It's called product shortage. The manufacutrer produced to little to keep up with the demand and that is unfortunate.
As for the long term upgrade viability of the phone, being a stock Android phone I see this phone having a nice healthy span for at least the next 18 months whether by Tmo and Google or through the Developers. The hardware can support it so there will be nothing stoping it.

But seriously, I hear you Dani, I love my phone and can't understand why since the SG2 and Nexus and Atrix are out suddenly people call ours ****e? It is annoying. Our phone is top quality.
Besides, after reading the discussion in the leak threads about how the video issue came up with all of the modded kernels and most importantly the assumption that AT&T developers care about what we do here at the forums so much that they use us as guinea pigs(in a good way) they stopped releasing leaks until they were ready for the official, I just took those words for GOLD and decided we are waiting. 1) Yes, AT&T Doesn't give a damn about firmware updates.
2) The Infuse sold extremely well.
3) I've seen very little advertising on the Skyrocket, yet continue to see ads for the Infuse (as recently as this past week on TV and yesterday in a target flyer.)
I've decided I can live with the ROMS in our forums here and AT&T can kiss my shiny metal arse.
Well, not sure if this is any indication, but my local Walmart is selling infuse cases, as well as screen protectors, while there is nothing on the SGSII or Skyrocket. Honestly I think Samsung is spewing out more expensive versions of practically the same phone, and the Infuse is the OG in this siuation. *thinks of carbon copying phones, and sees a conspiracy theory!*
Since I follow these forums as well as the Xperia Play forums, my hypothesis is:
-They were testing GB
-They LOLragequit and decided to make all newer android phones upgradeable to ICS
-they plan on releasing ICS in January or February.
I know these are some out-there speculations, but AT&T tends to send firmware updates in batches, and it has been confirmed by Sony Ericsson that they are planning on ICS for the Play by February 2012.
Just my 2 cents on the matter.
What I think is that as usual att is behind schedule. Maybe Samsung put us off while developing a whole new line. Either way I doubt we will see official this month. but the idea we will never see it is just ignoring the evidence. They wouldn't be working on it so aggressively if they didn't intend to release it. Also since att probably only wanted one update the wait is kinda a good thing since we'll get at least 2.3.6 and not 2.3.3 like Rogers got.
I honestly don't think we will see gb officially. Bit I have had gingerbread on my phone for a while now
E3D
I think the Infuse is a decent phone.
Already fast.
Dual core means didily squat...to me, it a phone. If you want fast, get a tablet or netbook or laptop.
4.5" is just right in my back pocket or breast pocket.
GB leak is prob near completion.
I'm expecting a OTA within a month or two.
If it doesn't, UCKK4 stock is fine for me as well.
Some of the tweaks added to CatyROM (acid, thunderbolt or adrenaline) or some we can add ourselves may be better than the release....unless samsung has been follow the threads and incorporate them into the new release.
my2cents...
my next phone should have a neuro connection I can jam into my brain. It'll be instant like my thoughts. It'll run off my stored fat. And I will be assimilated

Right after the iPhone, and it would still be if it weren't for the new models.
What people don't seem to get, is that AT&T is also deving for the phone, they encounter the same issues that our devs encounter. Bluetooth issues, HDMI output, the only difference is that they are "Official Updates" because they are carrier released.
The only good conclusion about no leaks, is that it got it's kinks worked out and its in the final stages of testing to make sure no kinks were left untreated.

This could be very true. remember the backflip, that thing got its update to 2.1 like 4 months after it was planned. and to be honest, AT&T never said by years end. it said is 2011 android line will expect to receive gingerbread.
I quote
Upgrade Details
Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivate™ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread.

I keep hearing that Sammy's perspective is that there is no "financial incentive" to provide updates to old phones. Well here is one. I will never buy another samsung android phone so long as they have this policy. I will also tell everyone who will listen to do the same.
I know that if they do not support devices as recent as the SGS4G, it is only a matter of time before their new devices are unsupported.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Heh, Raver and I were talking about why they would wind up not giving ICS to the Vibrant and it was for this reason. They're a capitalist company, and updating older phones would not be good for business. People wouldn't have an incentive to upgrade if they got the latest software all the time.
I am a little mad that they're not going to update the T959V to ICS since it falls within the 18 month time window that they're supposed to provide upgrades for. Go figure.
Yeah Sammy really wiped it's ass with the pledge it made to Google about the 18 month window.

I agree with you. Hardware is a good enough incentive, but samsung is too greedy and cheap to provide the software updates for their older device. The SGS 4G is still relative new too. This is why there are people still buying, using, and praising Apple. Their support and service put samsung to shame.

Upgrades come once every 2 years unless you drop 600 in a phone. The bs is that a new phone with better hardware comes out every 4 months and all other phones no longer get supported due to " hardware" or some crap. The galaxy s3 is coming out in a few months. Wanna bet my galaxy s2 won't be able to run android 5.0 due to hardware limitations. There are phones with weaker specs than my sgs4g that are getting ics. It's corporate greed on Sammy's part really. This is the one area, in my opinion, that apple does right. They support their devices for a good couple years. Samsung could, they just don't.

The sad thing is, by the time to you drop 600 on the latest phone, it's already outdated.

Samsung failure to provide future support - opinion
I for one, have always liked Samsung phones, since my Captivate, then Vibrant, when I switched to tmobile, to the SGS4G. It was a blessing to see Gingerbread release and source for the SGS4G. Especially since it is so different from the other Galaxy S cousins. The Vibrant is still waiting for Gingerbread, and they have a petition to hopefully convince Samsung into at least giving a Gingerbread update.
I would be satisfied if they would release their Driver source or at least the driver API and associated libs so we as a community ( or on your own ) can build ICS or any other version for our phones after they drop support.

But we are indeed getting the "value pack" mentioned in the article after all; it should be a nice start, allowing for new features without necessarily offering a full ICS release.
Still, it's frustrating that the Nexus gets the full 4.0 but the Galaxy doesn't.

I would also like to know this. I have read several articles where Sammy says nothing will be released afterall.

They made mention of a value pack, but scrapped the idea 2 days later.

The nexus line will always get the update first after all base updates comes from google then google will give the source codes to the other company.

Sammie's loss, 'cause all I can say is, I'm stuck with 14 months left on this contract, and looks like I'm going back to HTC after that.
This also helps me to decide on my new tablet... and the brand won't be Samsung now.
I love my phone ... but I hate Samsung.
They are a bunch of capitalist bastards. I understand that everyone is out to make money, but as it was mentioned, many people have 2 year contracts with their phone company. I for one refuse to pay $600 for a phone. That is utterly ridiculous in my opinion. And personally I know many others who feel the same way ... we wait until our upgrade is available and then upgrade to the best possible option.
For those of us that feel the way that we do, not supporting their older devices just drives a knife between Samsung and us. Whether they support our phone or not... I will have this phone until my contract is up. If Samsung does not support my device I can assure you this will be my last Samsung device that I will ever purchase.
I always found that odd, like simple math escapes the masses or some lol - kats refuse to pay 600 for a phone outright, but those same kats are cool with taking it in the ass for 2 years and paying 2136 in that time frame (basic Tmo 89 a month unlimited/limited plan)
...which means you're paying a **** ton more than 600 for that phone lol
OT;
I completely understand everyone's frustrations with capitalism, but Samsung is no different than any other large or small corporation blatantly raping our asses for cash (car insurance is a great example) - that's what we're all born and bred to do, become consumers, nothing more, nothing less - everyone on this god forsaken planet epitomizes insanity with their 9-5 lives of compliance, mediocrity and consumer slavery, don't do a damn thing about it, but then expect the slave owners to listen when they have a problem with the dirty spoon they're forced to eat with - lol wake the [email protected] up ..meh, better yet, simply continue to live your life in a dream world thinking you're unique and special ..just like everyone else - yeah, it's much easier that way lol - c'est la vie
Sigh. Official ICS came out on 11th Oct. Its been 5 business days and counting and still no sign of kernel source anywhere. Why oh why, LG? Isn't the torture for the past year enough. Even Optimus black got their source the next business day.
Is there a slightest of slightest chance that the kernel source might never see the daylight?
I bet you they are doing this on purpose to screw over all the "non" korean 2x users. They are trying to force us to get a new phone!
They could care less about us. Lemmings will go out and buy more LG products... I don't care if the next Nexus is gonna have specs that rival high-performance gaming machines capable of playing Crysis at 120 FPS. If its made by LG, I'll pass...

You won't find your happiness with othee brands, it's the same with every single one of them. Two of my friends have the galaxy s2 and the sony ericsson xperia ray, both of which received their ICS update almost 6 months ago, and both of them just got a notification to update just the other day. You've been waiting for 5 business days? Pfff, patience, yound Skywalker...
Screw LG.

So, Galaxy s2 and Sony Ericsson Experia Ray got ICS update 6 months ago, and they just got an update notifaction the other day. That's more than the Canadian Optimus 2X (which is a clone of the G2X) which never got an Android OS update from Froyo and, according to LG, never will. I'd say that puts the last nail in LG's coffin in Canada as far as owners of that LG phone, including me, are concerned. U.S. owners of the G2X will probably never see another update for their phone from Gingerbread either. Owners of the Optimus 2X, other than those who own the Korean SU660 version which just got it's ICS update, are still waiting for ICS and, if it does become available, may only be available in some markets. LG is also stalling on providing the source code for the Korean SU660 version of ICS. Consequently, I think we've been much too patient.
Please explain me a thing: if there's already drivers for everything work in the ICS, why do we still having problems with 3D acceleration?
Okay, there is no official ROM, but CM9, CM10 is so well developed that, in my mind, is not such a big deal to get the drivers from SU660 and cook a new ROM, or am I wrong?

Without the source code showing the "hooks" into the driver(s), it would take an extreme amount of talent and work to reverse engineer the code which virtually no one is willing to expend on a phone which is, in tech time, ancient history.
You guys are acting like a bunch of babies. The kernel sources are coming and we all know it but complaining won't expedite the process. How about exercising a little patience? Who cares if they don't work on our schedule? Even if it takes a month, that's fine with me. At least we will get it...

Yeah, but if it's a Nexus phone, then that means Google would be in charge of the updating process, correct? If so, then why hate on their next phone if they won't even have control over the updates?

Why hate? I'm of the belief that I'm not going to "reward" a company for bad business practices. That's why!
So now I'm impatient and a "cry baby" for having a harsh opinion of a hardware company?? Wow... Just... wow....

I'm just saying, crying about it isn't going to speed up the process. We've waited this long what's another week?

everyone needs to get angry at each other. seriously guys, stop complaining. Mods are going to start locking threads if you keep this up.
Hopefully we wont have to see the people who create such threads over the LG Nexus forum. That way it can stay clean. :fingers-crossed:

My anger is directed at the LG corporation. There's no anger towards other members having their opinions and feelings. The members that frequent these forums (majority of them at least) are here because they care about the product they currently have, or just flat out like to help. My anger at LG isn't going to make me stop helping whenever I can, with whatever I can. If you're in this forum, more than likely you're a G2X/O2X owner. We're here for each other to lend a helping hand.
Guys, Guys, Guys.
The intention for this thread wasn't to start a flame war or so on. This is the "so near yet so far" syndrome, atleast for me.
It was/is killing me inside that we are just one hurdle away from getting a stable ICS/JB ,which all of us who have this device are dreaming about for an year, and yet again the kernel source isn't out even thou for a phone from the same company it was out the next day. I hate it to be a deja vu. Waiting another year for the kernel source. lol.
