Samsung just released the first firmware update today... i installed it but cant find any info online anywhere about what all it changed/fixed? anyone have more info on this?
There's a post in general about it coming soon. I haven't gotten it yet, anyway to extract it and host it? just in case they release it in phases. According to the other post, you can install it via OTA, Store, or home computer, so it should be available to the masses soon.
Always the same first question... Does it kill root?

Sorry about the double post. Got an fc and then didn't show.
I got the update a bit ago. Phone rebooted to install...there was an error but I didn't get to see what it was. Phone rebooted again and is going fine now. Titanium backup still shows root. I went to about phone and it shows 2.1_update 1. I read media hub was supposed to be enabled but mine still says check later...I'm wondering if my phone didn't actually update. I will see what others say about their updates.
Oh and my specs...one click rooted with andromeda kernel and adw launcher...pretty much stock other than that

Firmware version 2.1-update1 has been out for weeks. It was on my phone when I bought it at the beginning of the month.

This is what I thought too. I knew I saw the update 1 on my phone when I got it...Well anyway, an update was pushed to my phone this morning and it looks like the installation failed. I try to update firmware again, but nothing. I wonder if root is keeping it from installing. I haven't done anything else to the phone that would stop an update. Might have to side load the update when it comes out on the website.

Probably the custom kernel. I haven't even rooted yet, want to wait to see of this blocks root, but probably won't, at least not entirely. May reset root, but it should be rootable again. I thought the root method was a general 2.1 exploit, not really specific to the epic.

That's what I figured...I could flash back to stock I guess, but might be moot if the phone can't find the update again. It was pushed to me to begin with and now it's like it never happened...

I still have dg27 so it seems my update just failed. It's gotta be the custom kernel then. hmm...what to do, ha
Well, update: I was trying to use Odin to flash the stock kernel back on and I bricked the phone, haha. It wouldn't boot after trying to flash with Odin. IT was stuck on a screen with a picture of a phone, a computer and a caution sign in between. I looked around and it seems the only option is to flash back to stock. That worked like a charm in Odin...dunno who the stock kernel wouldnt flash...oh well. So now everything works again. Took like 5 min to flash and reboot, then another 20 to put it all back like I had it. ADW, Dropbox, and Appbrain are my friends, ha.
Anyway, with the stock kernel the update pushed again and installed fine. I have access to media hub now and whatever else was pushed with this update. It seems the update didn't like the kernel. But all is good now, I just have to root again. I think I'm gonna leave the stock kernel this time though.

Samsung's build number is always easy to read.
A, B, C, D, ... : month.
January, February, March, etc. G means July, therefore.
27 means July 27th: the date of kernel/firmware build.
So DI07 means September 07, which is fairly new.
http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/213524
Here is a Sprint Admin talking about it. It is an official release as of today. He has all the fixes listed too.
it is a 2.1 exploit through adb actually so this shouldnt be of any worries to us
Just got a pop up on my phone about the update. Accepted it and told it to apply. Phone rebooted, then showed an error when trying to apply the update. Hit the Home button and phone rebooted. No further notifications now about the update. Went in and manually checked and it tells me none are available. So,..I guess you only get one shot at the update and then you're skipped??
anyone that is rooted with stock kernel able to update and keep root?
wait what update? i checked for an update but there wasnt one.
Hello, I have tried a few things, and so far have made no progress. Kies can't find any new updates, and now, after a reinstall, can't even find my device in the firmware update manager. Help!
EDIT: Kies can find the device, but under the Update Manager, it doesn't list anything needing an update.
If you have a US version of Captivate, it doesn't matter which version of Kies you use. Your phone reports its product id to Kies and it checks Samsung server to see if there is any updates. Right now, there is no update yet for US Captivate.

I'm using a Canadian i896 with Rogers.
how is it possible that rogers gets an update faster than att when att released frist lol
Getting kies to work is a huge hassle. Took at least a few hours to get kies to recognize on a friebds phone after trying so many methods. Kies just sucks, especially for the captivate. Try rooting abd flashing a new rom. It is much faster to get 2.2 or even 2.2.1

Since you've installed custom ROMs, the issue you are having is that the product code in your nv_data.bin has been changed to something other than what it needs to be for Kies to report that it's a Rogers I896 and should be eligible for the 2.2 upgrade. You can check what the product code it's reporting to Kies by using regedit. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\1 and look in the right hand pane at the Product Code entry. If it says anything other than SGH-I896ZKARWC it is not going to show that 2.2 is available to upgrade to.
If it is reporting another product code there then you need to either 1) modify your nv_data.bin to match the Rogers product code or 2) put a copy of your original nv_data.bin back on the phone and then try Kies again and it should detect that there is an update available almost right away. Have you restored to Rogers 2.1 stock, yet?

My product code is correct, I repaired it earlier, but I'm having the same issue.
Awesome, that's a good start. Are you on Rogers stock 2.1? Does Kies detect your device? When you click the update firmware button what does it say? Does the Kies entry in the registry show that it detects it as that product code? Does it show I896UXJI2/I896RWCJI2/I896UXJI2/I896UXJI2 in the HIDSWVER entry?
have Windows 7 Ultimate and Hard time Kies Recognizing my Phone. I used the same method which used to fix an iPhone Issue ages back
1) Download Your Uninstaller 2010 ( Free trial ) and removed currently installed KIES - it removes it plus cleans up form the registry
2) Download everything from http://www.voidtools.com/ - it's like an interactive search and picks everything in your PC. Search for Samsung and Kies, delete all files and folders which say Samsung and Kies
3) Reboot PC
4) Install Canadian Kies Ver http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/de...ub_class_cd=P#
5) Open Kies (You have to be in TW Launcher, not LauncherPro or other for Kies to detect the phone and do a firmware update)
6) Plug in your phone with Kies firmware update On (in Settings/Application/usb settings)
7) Select Firmware Update in Kies
8) Click the Update button
9) Wait for the download to finish then you will see another Windows POP up, DONT PRESS OK
10) Disconnect USB | Power OFF Phone
11) Power Phone ON with VOL Buttons ON, it will come to Downloading... Download mode (Black/yellow screen with a shovelling droid)
12) Connect USB after 5 seconds
13) Press OK on Kies so it pushed the update to the phone
14) Kies will say Update Completed and your phone should be sitting on Galaxy S, diconnect cable and you enter Froyo

Yep, odin'd back to JI2. Kies connects no problem, but once I hit update firmware, and get to the list of devices that need firmware updates, it's empty. I've got 3 entries under DeviceDB, one of them has the correct info. Under HIDSWVER, I have I896UXJI2//I896UXJI2/I896UXJI2 instead. I'm betting I can't just edit it through there, can I?

Lol, unfortunately no, tried that myself for the product code and it just puts it back. One question, is your SIM installed when you connect it to Kies? Wondering because mine was and I'm wondering if maybe the fact that I have that 4th entry on HIDSWVER is related to that?

Ah, if SIM is in then that rules that out because I had mine in. It almost looks like a bad flash or something didn't get reverted quite right. Only difference is that I reflashed mine to stock with Heimdall and not Odin. A little more of a pain but worked great... You running Kies 1.53.something something?
Another question, when you fixed your nv_data.bin did you reset the ownership and permissions to the right ones in the /efs folder? Can't imagine that it should make a difference but...

Maybe. I didn't use the .pit file when using Odin, maybe that's it? I'll reflash. And yeah, i have the right Kies.
And I would assume, I did the same method as the other guy in the main thread.

No, don't use the pit and select repartition. The Rogers stock rom tar doesn't contain the dbdata partition and your phone will just end up stuck in recovery mode. You'll then have to flash the Odin 1-click to the AT&T firmware and then reflash to Rogers stock again. Learned that the hard way last night.
When you say the other guy in the main thread, which instructions? I'm only asking because there's a thread about fixing the nv_data.bin and the instructions are for the AT&T I897 version so it's not exactly the same for our I896. Very, very close but not quite. Obviously you've corrected the product code to match the Rogers one but wondering about the owner and group ownership settings + the permissions. The file should be owned by radio.radio and the permissions should be 700 (rwx --- ---) if you check with adb shell from a command line. Probably telling you stuff you already know, sorry if I'm going to far into the basics. Just want to try and cover that stuff to weed out potential issues. Took me almost 3 hours to fix mine last night because I had to search through many threads and places to finally piece it all together.

It boots to recovery, but if you clear cache and user data, it boots fine after. Trust me, I've bricked enough times.

And it suddenly works after a fresh flash, and master clear. Here goes.

Yea, that repartitioning things cost me big time last night. I really, really didn't want to flash the odin 1 click to AT&T cause now I have that damn white AT&T worldphone logo which I hate but my phone is now running stock Rogers 2.2.
So far I'm kinda meh with it. It works, couple wonky things with haptic feedback and the wireless doesn't seem very stable, at least for me. Think I'm going back to di11igaf's 3.0.2 rom. Loved that one!

You can get rid of the AT&T logo, eh? There's a thread in the dev section about it.
I haven't had any issues, other than z4 not working. I'll super one click tomorrow. I have yet to find a rom for me to stick with though. CM 6.x is too laggy, CM 7 isn't ready yet, neither is sense, and everything else is just modded i9000 roms. No offense to the devs.

Yea, going to look into the ATT logo replacement tomorrow. Too tired to take that on tonight.
As for ROMs, yea - tough call. I settled on Di11i's ROMs cause I liked the theme work and they are REALLY smooth and fast. I had a Galaxy S Vibrant before and one application I use - Touchdown for Exchange - was so damn slow on it I could barely stand to check my email. On the cappy with Di11i's ROM it's literally like butter. I coupled his ROM with the latest glitterballs kernel and BAM, wicked ROM with all the features I need, a nice theme and excellent battery life. Very happy with that.
I actually only upgraded to the stock Rogers 2.2 to do a /system pull for him to work with. Going back to it tomorrow, I think.
At least we have choices now, cause if it was left up to the carriers and manufacturer we'd suffer with whatever craptastic releases they come out with. To be fair, the Rogers ROM is really bloat free and actually pretty decent. With a change to Launcher Pro or Go Launcher I could probably deal with it for awhile.
Anyway, hope you find a rom you like or at least the Rogers 2.2 hangs on strong for ya!
After many issues trying to get phone working again, I was able to flash ED1stock and the phone will boot up to the android setup screen.
Problem is, I get an error message after I click Next. I have went to verizon and got a new SIM but the same message comes up. Verizon will not exchange the phone due to my wife taking the phone up when the phone would not boot and when they were looking at it, voodoo started talking to them so they Red Flagged my phone.
So now I'm stuck with a phone that will not finish the setup. At this point, I just want to get it back to stock working so I can sell it.
Here is the message that I am getting.
"Sorry, this SIM card is not supported or readable. Please contact your wireless service provider."
Any help would be great.

Please do. I did the same but it didn't work. Only thing is when I got home, I tried to re-flash the phone and I might have left the new sim in the phone that could have caused it to go bad.
Starting to think that its a radio problem. Wonder if there is a stock radio we can flash?
Well, the bad news is multiple new SIM cards did not work and many other members are experiencing the same problem. Keep your eyes out for a radio update to flash.

If that is the reason. Don't know any other reason. I even tried to flash a couple kernels but failed also.
Only thing I could think of is the radio being the issue.

I made the mistake of trying to run a backup from clockwork. That started it all. Then wiped the phone and tried to flash every rom out there to get it to work again. Nice that its booting up to android but sucks that it will not see the sim.
Can anyone point us in the right direction on this? The phone is starting to collect dust sitting here.
Has anyone been able to recover from this?

So far I haven't been able to get a dev really to look at the possibilities.

There is a known issue with sim cards being fried frequently on this phone that Verizon is aware of.
Some people are temporarily removing the sim prior to flashing.

I've a rooted G2X that's still running 2.2. Just over an hour ago I got a "T-Mobile Update Service." notification. Surprisingly there's no talk of a fresh OTA here so I'm not really sure what's going on. Not that an OTA would work for me since I'm rooted, but I guess it's going to keep bugging me until I do something about it.
2.3.3 was all the rage about a month or so ago.

Well, sure, but all news says that T-mobile stopped doing OTAs some time ago (started late July, stopped August 10). So why on earth is my phone just getting it now? I even do a manual check every so often and never got it. I didn't do anything special today that I can recall.
you should update it. you dont have nothing to lose. ifd your still rooted it will unroot but then you can flash nvflash recovery and go back to any rooted roms you want

T-Mobile removed the 2.3.3 update from their servers long ago. If you are getting something else it is new most likely. You can do an OTA if you are rooted as long as you have not modified any system files other than adding su and superuser.apk to get root..

Well, I let it update but of course it just booted into CWM instead of doing anything. I'm guessing I'd have to flash back to stock in order to apply any OTA. If someone tells me what to search for I can run logcat and see what it downloaded, but I didn't see anything obvious when I looked (and there's a lot of stuff in there).
I'm on froyo to and rooted but no clockwork mod recovery. I tried to check for an update and it said some kind of error i dont remember.

Check in the /cache directory for the zip file for tthe update. If you can, before you install it can you save a copy of the zip to a separate area on your sdcard and thn upload it to a file sharing site so others can download it? Once you install it, it gets deleted from the /cache directory but if you save it elsewhere those copies will be saved.

Yes, you need to be on stock recovery and your phone's system partition must be stock. LG stores some OTAs very differently than other vendors.
Do a backup of your phone first to preserve the OTA image. It might be in the cache but it might be elsewhere. If you wouldn't mind giving me a link to the system and cache images I can try to find the OTA and see what it is for.
I just got the 2.3.3 ota update about 2 weeks ago which i thought was real late also. I used to check for the update and i would always get an error too. i was rooted in stock froyo for tmobiles g2x (LG P999DW). I didnt have to re-root the phone and last night i just flashed clockworkmod recovery and flashed the 1.55ghz overclocking kernel on to the 2.3.3 that i got from the ota update.

Did you flash roms and then restore an old backup? That backup could have had the OTA on it and you did not notice it before. T-Mobile pulled the OTA months ago (was available less than two weeks). Doesn't seem likely it was pushed to you recently.
Recently tried to unroot due to issues with the vibrate motor not working for any notifications or anything. Also, apps started to fail more frequently it was all just becoming a big headache. I had thought for sure I enabled OEM unlocking but at this point its obvious I did not. Currently I can not get phone to boot besides to the encryption page and no idea what pin code would be. I have tried everything imaginable under the sun. In adb I ran the oem unlock string which caused all these issues. If I try to boot into recovery I get the message "Your device is corrupt. It cant be trusted and will not boot". If I try to boot normally i get the message "Your device has loaded a different operating system" then boots to the encryption lock page. I have placed the RUU and other files and attempted the SD card way of running the files to no avail. Does anyone have any other advice to getting this thing back on?
Edit: this can be closed. I flashed nearly every file I could find but nothing would take. Doing it both the adb and SD card method. Finally, I found the zip that the phone finally liked and it finally flashed. OH man cant be any happier to finally have my baby back on. Anyone else become stuck in this issue, just do as others have said, find the correct zip, flash it, and all will be ok.

I'm in this predicament at the moment. I am not able to find the zip file with the same OS as my phone (2.42.617.6)
I am looking at this spreadsheet to locate the correct zip file. Could anyone help me, please? Thanks.

38 or 39 should work. The last octet doesn't matter as that is just sub version. So long as the first 3 octets match ie 2.42.617, your good to go.

Thanks shivadow for responding to my post. So I downloaded one of the one of the latest versions (from the zip variant link) and renamed it "firmware.zip" I am using ADB to do the process (https://forum.xda-developers.com/u11/how-to/collection-htcu-u11-ruu-firmware-t3612048) and I get this error:
C:\adb>fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
target reported max download size of 2399200000 bytes
error: cannot load 'firmware.zip'
I renamed it a couple other times and I still get that error above. My phone (U11) is in the download mode. Just for giggles when I type in on the command prompt "fastboot oem rebootRUU" I get to a screen that has HTC on it and says and the warning "Security Warning. If you flash this phone with any ROM that was not officially released by HTC you take the risk of releasing...." When I give the command to flash the zip file I get the same error as above.
I am hopeful that I can get this phone back to normal running status. I just need to get the right commands and files to do this.
I appreciate any and all help to get my phone back to normal again. Aloha.
Sorry just saw all the updates. Notifications turned off apparently. Since I was able to get phone back on I can say it's not like it used to. I've tried to run the RUU which fails every time. And my signal has turned to absolute crap; constant dropped signal and barely any LTE. So, I'm no help since all I've done is get the phone on but not working properly lol.

Aloha and thanks for taking the time to respond. Well you got farther than me as I was not able to get my phone out of trouble. Tomorrow will make two weeks since I sent my phone out to HTC. I just got the new HTC U12+ yesterday as I can't go without a reliable set because I need one for my jobs.
Next time if I do unlock the bootloader on any phone I will figure out how to do the process of rooting, updating, and not bricking the phone.
I hope you sort things out with your phone.

I'm not sure about getting further when it feels messed up still, ha. Yeah I get ya though, had the same experience freaking out that I wouldn't have a phone for work. Fortunately I had my cracked screen m10 that served as a backup until I was able to get the u11 to boot. I swear the last phones I rooted were less hassle than these more complex devices. Hope HTC can get it figured out for you.

I agree that the past phones were not so hard to unlock, root, update, and tweak. Now with the U12+ dual A/B slot partition and multiple files that are needed to root the phone it can be overwhelming.
I'm sure HTC will be able fix the phone but at what cost? I'm just waiting it out and hoping for the best.
Aloha!
