I have a Motorola Xoom that turns on but it only shows a black screen no Motorola logo or anything. I have tried the volume up and power button but that didn't work. The battery is dead now so I'm thinking of picking up a charger to see if I can get it working. Any ideas on what could be wrong. I think it was dropped at some point.

If you dropped it-> maybe a hardware issue like broken display-controller. If you boot into bootloader mode (from powered-down device, hold power + vol-down) and connect it to your computer (with fastboot set up), does fastboot devices show your xoom?

Yeah it showed some random letters when I plugged it in.

to clarify this: did your xoom show some random letters or did your command prompt show some random letters?
If your xoom worked correctly, this procedure would make the xoom show "Starting Fastboot protocol support" in addition to the Motorola Dual Core-Logo. >our command prompt/terminal on your computer should show your device's serial number (alphanumeric, like 359C338.....) followed by the word fastboot.
If your computer does show your devices serial number followed by the word fastboot while your xoom doesn't display anything (or just junk), that is a symptom of a hardware failure. I wouldn't try messing with it, instead just take it to your dealer... You should be able to flash the stock rom and/or erase your data using fastboot commands, though.

Well I was screwing around with my gtab, trying to put honeycomb on it, (I was on cyanogenmod) and I knew that I needed to put build 4349 on it. Unfortunately, I put that build on it, and installed my rom, but it didn't work. I decided to do the exact same thing over again, to see if it worked the second time. Halfway through the process, while restarting my gtablet, I had a serious problem. My gtablet will turn on after holding down the power button for about 30 seconds, but the screen is completely black and blank. Also, if I hit the (+) button, it says it will boot a recovery image, but it never does. If I hit the (-) to put it in APX mode for a NVflash, it simply turns off.
PLEASE, I have no idea what to do, because I really don't know what is going on with my tablet. I am just trying to put a honeycomb rom on it, but it seems I have completely screwed it up.
To put it straight: It won't go into APX mode
The screen is supposed to go black and blank when you start up in APX mode. Plug it into your computer and check to see if it is or not.
yea but supposedly it shows the viewsonic logo for a second. Mine when I hit the power button and hold the minus and just hit the power button are both the same. Also, I plug it in and nothing happens.
I tried holding the power for 15 seconds, nothing, if I hit the power for about 5 seconds it turns on that blank screen, if I hit + it says recovery key detected and booting recovery, but nothing happens after that
the black screen is the APX screen, it is blank and black.
You don't see an android symbol first.
my computer never says anything about a tablet without drivers or anything as stated in all guides
It's not unusual for the VS Birds splash screen to get lost during flashing operations that go bad. You also might not get a missing driver message for a number of reasons (especially if the driver isn't missing). So...
If the splash screen is missing, when you turn the tablet on while holding the volume down key the backlight should come on momentarily then the screen will go black. If that happens then you are in APX mode. If you have a linux box handy you can plug it into that and issue an "lsusb" command in a terminal window to verify that. There might be an equivalent for windows but I don't use it so I can't tell you what it would be.
If you are really having that much trouble with it I'd be happy to look at it for you if you cover shipping.
My power button failed on me (hardware, not the screenshot bug) so I completely removed it then went doh, I need that to turn the phone on! Anyways, other than adb turning the phone on, what kinda options do I have in order to get it to turn on?
Pulled from a Droid 2 thread, not sure if relevant.
3. So you need to SBF, but don't know how to get into the bootloader without the power button?
Simply plug the phone into your computer. Sometimes if the phone is already off, it will automatically boot into the bootloader. However if the phone is already on, just use the ADB command "adb reboot bootloader"
If your not good with ADB, simply pull your battery, replace it, and while holding the "up arrow" on your keyboard, plug the phone in and it will reboot into the bootloader.

Here's the link.
EDIT: Just experimented, the "adb reboot" does work! Just plug the phone into the computer, and type adb reboot into the terminal/cmd prompt!
EDIT 2: Just saw you didn't want an ADB solution.

I think you have to get back the powerbutton, else its a no-go on the sensation.
Send it back for repair will be a nice option
Lol, I guess I'll just wait until they start selling replacement parts for the Sensation. I can't go a week without my baby. /addiction to Robot Unicorn Attack
It's fine without one, just every now and then my phone crashes and goes into a reboot loop but I just updated my rom so I'm hoping for the best.
Hi There !
I have been using motorola xoom from the past 1 Year now , but yesterday night the tablet turned off automatically!
i tried doing a soft reset by holding the power button and volume up button , but it does nothing!
and when i plug in the charger to charge , sometimes it shows the white light for a minute and then it turns off , but now the white light shows and when i try to switch on the device the light goes away but the display is black , i dont even see motorola logo.
the device has no problems while charging , i mean the led light turns green when the device is fully charged but it doesnt boot up!!!
I tried connecting hdmi n tried switching it on , no result , same black screen!!!
Please help
Try turning on and then plugging it on your PC, try using adb devices and fastboot devices, if your Xoom has a screen problem, but is booting finely, then you will see something, but actually if it doesn't work it may be a problem and I will try to help you

You say the screen is blank, but the PC recognized right? Try using any of the commands to see what happens. Probably your graphic card is broken or your screen, because as far as I can tell the system is alright, as your PC recognized it.
Guys!
This would be my 1st time here. I've never faced any sort of problem with any of my android devices but this one.
My phone got lost a week back. So, I used "android device manager" to wipe/lock the phone but I think it didn't as the phone was switched off all this while.
So, some gentleman found my phone and returned it to me just today. I put it up for charging. It popped up 0% battery screen and turned on after 10-15min.
As soon as the boot animation(earth/buildings) finished it jumped to a black screen that is not going away. If I press the power button for a few seconds, it reboots and come back to the black screen after boot animation.
It has been on charging for last 3 hours.
So my questions are
1) Can I make back up of the data without turning it on/formatting it?
2) How can I make it to work?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Okay, heres an update!
I let the phone idle for 2-3 hours. The battery got drained out completely. I tried turning it on. The LED blinked a couple of times and stopped blinking. I put the phone up on charging and the LED came up(stable this time).
0% battery screen come up. Phone boots up automatically after 5-10min and get stuck on blank screen after boot animation.
BACK TO SQUARE ONE.
Has anyone here, faced this problem yet?

Your phone might be stucking on a screen with blue coloured earth.
Looks like you have an locked bootloader. The process is really hard with that .
Try booting your phone to fastboot mode (press volume down+power key for sometime ). From fastboot menu scroll down to recovery option and long press volume up until the phone vibrates(here volume down works to scroll down and volume up work as OK button.) Now from CMD (adb) in your PC type the command "adb pull /data/apps/ C:\Moto/"without quotes, it should copy all your apps to the Moto folder in C drive. Then type the command "adb pull /data/data C:\Moto/data/"without quotes, it will copy all your apps data to given folder.
P.S. The whole process may take 2 hour so be patient .

Hey
Thanks for the reply!
So, now the problem I'm facing is that "when I type adb in the terminal, it shows an error message "adb server is out of date. Killing!"
And as for the phone, the phone goes blank after the blue colored earth. No response whatsoever!

Is your bootloader locked or unlocked. If you done nothing with your phone means it is locked.
Now coming to your point. The message "adb server is out of date, killing adb server" comes normally, no need to worry about that. Make sure when you type the commands when you're in recovery mode and not in fastboot mode, from fastboot you need to boot into recovery then only the adb will work.
If your bootloader is unlocked you should first flash a custom recovery then backup your phone from there. And you can get your phone working by doing a factory reset of it, in fastboot menu of your phone scroll to factory option and long click on volume up key and reboot your phone.
Got strucked in same problem.
Had to do factory reset to get it working.
Hey all,
First time I've posted here as I can't find anything on the internet regarding this issue.
My phone is not rooted and on stock rom I (stupidly!) changed the runtime mode to ART when reading an article on how to extend battery life. I did this and then since doing that my phone won't start up and when plugged in to an outlet or a PC the usual battery icon comes on and then drops out after a few seconds, and then comes on again, and then drops out and it just keeps on doing this.
Theres a youtube video available but I can't post a link here because I'm a new user.
When the phone is plugged in to a PC it doesn't recognise the device as the power just keeps dropping out so I can't flash stock ROMS and I can't get to recovery to reflash the phone to factory settings (it just turns off)
Any genius out there to help with this?! Much appreciated

Hi Lethargy, Thanks for posting so quickly, unfortunately I can't flash the factory images because when I connect the phone to a PC it doesn't pick up anythings connected because the battery just keeps dropping in and then dropping out every 5 seconds so the computer views it as not connected.

Be more specific please. Does it reboot out of bootloader, every 5 seconds, disconnect from your PC every 5 seconds, or..? Are you sure it isn't a driver issue?

When I get to bootloader I can select an option, it doesn't reboot out of bootloader every 5 seconds, the bootloader screen is absolutely fine once I get to it, when I click at option from the bootloader screen that's when it doesn't complete that action a message saying "Google" appears (the loading screen) and then the phone turns off.
I need to have the phone plugged in to get to bootloader, if I try without the power cable nothing happens.
Whether it is attached to a PC or a power outlet the same thing happens: battery icon comes up for 5 seconds, then it disappears for 5 seconds, then it comes on for 5 seconds, disappears for 5 seconds.
Any more info needed? Thanks in advance.

Lets check your battery level to make sure it is not gone bad or got deplated. Make sure your phone is off. Hold down volume_up key while you connect the phone to the pc. You should see the download mode screen after that you should see a next screen with the text "firmware update". Underneath that text in a textbox with white border you should see 3 characters. A "B" letter and 2 numeral. "B" means battery the two numeral means the battery level.
For example you see: B23 it means battery level is at 23%
Report me your battery level.
To restart your phone just hold down the power key for 10-15 secs
Thanks

Hi Bitdomo, when I do as you ask I can't enter download mode because it has a connection to my PC for 5 seconds and then turns off, then has a connection and then turns off.
If you go to you tube .com and then follow it with watch?v=ad7KDWp2y-8 you'll see the exact issue I'm having when connecting to a PC or on my computer (I can't paste links as I'm a new user so forgive me.) Thank you for looking into this.

You don't need to select any option to flash the factory images with fastboot, you just need to be in the bootloader. Read the thread I linked.

Hey all, just wanted to say to everyone thats posted in this forum so far THANK YOU for your help. For the people that have found this forum and are having the same problem with their Nexus 5 you need to replace the battery and everything will work fine so it was a hardware issue this one.
As soon as I replaced the battery I could access Recovery and just reset the device with no problems.
