[Q] brand spanking new - General Questions and Answers

so I finally got around to doing this - never owned a cell phone - though I've used them a few times and now I'm looking for something that will allow me to connect to wifi at any hot spot (quick & easy) have the features I need (browser) to log into to password protected wifi system - mostly for skype - and look up locations, phone numbers, perhaps check e-mail - absolutely nothing fancy, gimmicky or with the intention to impress.
would like a good product, built to last, at the most affordable price.
simplicity simplicity simplicity
I'm sure there are tons of other questions I could ask, but all I really need is something that will allow me to use skype via wifi, everything else is a plus.
suggestions?
thank you

Samsung Nexus S 4g, Sprint
Stock Android, unlimited data, no bs.
I would suggest an htc but they are gimmicky
Note: this post assumes you are USA and would want Android. You may choose iphone if you get it on Sprint, they are very simple and do their thing.
Conclusion: Sprint = best carrier USA, iOS or stock Android are the most simple UI's

[Q] How to switch a Samsung Epic 4G to Virgin Mobile

[pointless boring intro, feel free to ignore]
Hello everyone, I have been following this site for a while, and I recently made an account so I could give feedback while I beta tested some ROMs. Well I can't post in the developer section yet so I thought I would ask a question or two.
[question]
So I searched the forums (I tried to be thorough but I am on the app so I may have missed the answer to this) and after being unable to find my answer I come to you community!
Does anyone know of a way to get a Samsung Epic 4G to work on Virgin Mobile? I saw some small discussions but nothing concrete.
I am curious because I have Sprint on my dad's plan (for I am but a poor college boy), and he sometimes forgets to pay the bill. I would like to get my own plan, but can't afford more than Virgin Mobile's $25 plan, but I love my Epic and VM is lacking the high end devices I crave.
So if anyone has any information on this, I would appreciate it. A tutorial would be nice, but I also want to learn, so even if a feasible means is not available, perhaps an explanation of why not is available. Also, if this is possible, what would I stand to lose if I did this?
Thank you for any future help.

Are you using me to raise your post count? An epic is a CDMA phone, it doesn't have a Sim card. Anyone ACTUALLY know what they are talking about?

[Q] How much $ to switch to Blackberry?

I am starting a new job soon that requires I use a Blackberry.
It's a small firm with outsourced IT. When I asked if I could use my Android, they said "no, we're not technologically advanced" and that was the end of it.
Here are my options:
1) They will provide me with a Blackberry (and pay for it) to keep up on my work e-mail, and I continue to carry around my android for personal use. I hate the idea of two devices.
2) They will allow me to port my phone number to their account, buy me a blackberry, and pay for the phone and my minutes/data plan. So, I will save the $80/month I spend on my current phone/data plan.
I have read there are ways to make Android phones work with BES, but let's assume that is not a possibility here.
Is $80/month in savings *12 = $960 a year enough for you to use only a Blackberry?
I don't think that is a question you should ask public. You need to consider advantages and disadvantages of using Blackberry instead of Android. I've recently switched from Blackberry to Galaxy S2 (I will NOT use iPhone even if they paid me) and I don't think I could use Blackberry again.
of course, if Blackberry is able to do everything you need to do, $960 a year sounds like a good deal but are you going to be satisfied with Blackberry?

carry the two devices..
A blackberry is still by far and away the best pure communications device.. and the modern 9900/9930 phones are really excellent..in design, build quality and performance.
The drawback is that the fun/infotainment value is not there is a 2.6" screen so coming from android you may feel that its not much fun.. and it isnt..
Secondly, note that companies run BES for a reason, and understand what that means.. I recommend that you keep work & private separate.
Hmm, quite a conundrum. As the guys above said, it's really down to your personal choice but just like you I'd find it hard to decide as I'd also hate having two devices but would miss my s2 too much. However, that is a big saving over the year and that might be enough for me to make the switch. Only you can decide tho my friend!

[Q] Best phone for someone coming from the Nokia N9?

Hey everyone-
I recently purchased a Nokia N9 off of Ebay on a, in retrospect, misguided whim. I love the UI of the phone and how seamlessly the device allows me to switch from one app to another. However, despite my love for the phone, I still find myself missing Android and its ecosystem (I owned a Samsung Vibrant for a few years prior to this phone). Even though the N9 does the few core things I normally do on a daily basis really well, it's still missing of the basic apps I used to rely on for daily use; i.e. Tumblr, Instagram, Ebay, and Amason. So I decided to sell the N9 on Ebay but now I'm pondering which phone I should buy next. I probably want to stick with Android, but I'm not sure which device to go with. I'm leaning towards either the HTC One X or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, however, I'm certainly open to other suggestions. I'm certain I don't wanna go with Galaxy S III because I hate the Touchwiz skin. If anyone out there has any suggestions for me I'm more than willing to hear them. Thanks.
-Sincerely, bobofosho123
P.S. I know for a fact that I'm not looking for anything with a contract, and I know I'll buy it without one since I'm on a grandfathered T-mobile plan.
Nexus all the way bud. Always up to date and great community support!

[Q] iPhone 4 w bad ESN for development

I finally purchased my first MacBook Pro so I can start iOS development. I do not own any iOS devices, other than my fiance's iPhone 4. I would like to ease myself into iOS development, so I am looking at purchasing a used iPhone 4. iPhone 4's can upgrade to iOS 6, so it seems to be the cheapest way to get into the iOS dev game.
Browsing ebay I see a lot of iPhones listed with bad ESN's. I understand this can mean it's a deactivated device which cannot be activated on a network, but would such a device be able to suffice my needs as a introductory development platform for either PhoneGap or native app development?
Would there be any pitfalls that may prevent me from working on wifi? I would not be activating the device on Sprint or anything, so could I theoretically buy some cheap att or verizon iPhone with a bad ESN and just use it on my local wifi for development purposes?

[Completed] Tethering VS Hotspot (hardcore gamer here)

Hello and I am a bit embarassed posting here
I have been a pretty hardcore gamer more than half my life now, but recently the house I am living at is sold and the new house has no access to cable internet or DSL. The only option was Satellite which is pretty terrible.
Someone was telling me don't buy the hot spot gear but to use a tethering app (easytether). They said that it won't use my mobile phone data? So I am wondering if this is true or not because I am seriously contemplating not moving to the new location even though it is a beautiful area, I cannot live without my games. :crying:
Any insight on this would be great. Every company i've looked at does not offer an " unlimited" data plan. I currently am using the new google Project FI with the Nexus 5x device.
