[Q] Optimus 3D - HACKY Music quality. - LG Optimus 3D

Hey guys!
I have been a long time lurker in these threads and i just bought an Optimus3d very cheaply.
I love the phone and its sound quality is excellent for my taste.
It is even better than Iphone.
But one thing that is very very annoying is that ever 5-10 minutes, the music hacks a bit. Suddenly when im listening to a song, the phone just goes back 1 second or half a second in a very noticeable sound.
It really gets in my nerves and i just wonder if any of you guys knows more and want to help me with this ?
I have been searching in this forum for a long time without finding a thread about this.
Thanks in advance for any advise

It's your memory card it's too slow you need at least a class 6 for good music without hacking...

I have the same problem. I tried with all kind of memory card. Also a class 10 Samsung micro sd.
I use Power Amp as default player and I have problem with all my musics. I find out that the problem could be caused by a miss-management of ram or something else. For example, sometimes, when I simply unlock my phone, the music has problem. A sort of rattle.
I'm using Thiaiz clean version 0.2, but the problems persist on every rom..!
Please help me. I use my phone as my personal mp3 player.

Yes, i feel the same. And im sure its not the Sd card since i use the internat storage of LG phone.
So i have no Sd card for starters.
----
I also think that it is a ram issue. But i have no ide how or why.
Im one of those guys who also uses the phone as an mp3 player and so far i had iphone 4 and samsung wave (which is the best so far) .....But this LG is good in every aspect besides this little rattely hacky music playback.
I have used
poweramp
original music player
And the "twist" player.
All with no luck..
Hope for someone who is very knowledgeable ;(

I am not sure since I dont listen to music but have you tryed to disable the swap file? Maybe thats the cause of your problems. Look to another thread for the how to.

I am very bad at searching but ill give it a go, and if you can help me find the thread. Please do
EDIT: i found Swapper app and i i activated it and all that. Still i had the problem, it actually became worse....

Try this https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zZGluY3JlYXNlLml0Il0. and set it to 1024 or 2048.
It should do the trick.

What kind of music files are you playing?
I Use average 2-3MB/min mp3s and this doesnt seem to ever happen to me [i play it on the internal storage] on stock music player.

Ok, guys, I've investigated this issue for a long time as I listen music 2 hours every day (I work out of my city and I use public transport to go to job) and this crap annoyed me as hell.
First, some facts, second solutions and workarounds:
FACTS:
1. This problem IS NOT EXCLUSIVE of Optimus 3d. Google search "music skips android" and you'll see other Android devices having the same issue.
2. The music micro-skips happen *specially* from externalSD. Music played from internalSD also has skipping but much, much less often.
3. Swapping has nothing to do about it. Tested.
4. Formatting the SDCard has nothing to do about it. Tested.
I have two SD card, one Samsung class 10 and other Sandisk class 4 (which in fact is faster than Samsung even being of *theorical* inferior class!!!), different manufacturers, I formatted both extensively in PC and in Optimus, the problem persisted in both.
5. SDCard speed has *ABSOLUTELY* nothing to do about this. Let's see (credits to Beriaru for this explanation):
-a MP3 with ridiculous high quality is encoded at 320Kbps, kiloBITS!!!!
-a SD Card of only class 2 means it writes data at 2MBps MegaBYTES!!! = 16Mbps = 16.384Kbps so it should play music with *ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM AT ALL* (and as I said, this is the writing speed, reading is even faster!!!!).
And finally as I said, I have two SD card, one class 10 (10MBps) and the problem HAPPENED THE SAME IN BOTH... CLEAR ENOUGH?
6. In my case, glitches happened ~4-5 times for each song, not continuous, but very noticeable and very annoying.
SOLUTIONS AND WORKAROUNDS:
a. Put the music at internalSD (yeah, if you are like me and u have gigas of mp3 this is a crappy solution, I know),
b. Use PowerAMP as player with these settings (credits to Disruptor for this tip):
menu/More/settings/Audio Engine/Advanced Tweaks ->
-Thread Priority to +1 (or higher),
-Audio Buffer Size to 750 ms
c. THIS IS MY SOLUTION: Change SD Cache Size parameter to 128Kb *AND REBOOT* (you can use System Tuner, ROM Toolbox, or SD Speed Increase programs to change the value). If that value don't work for you, TRY OTHER VALUES *AND REBOOT* -and post here which one works for you to benefit the community. For me, 128kb WORKS LIKE A CHARM!
NONE OF THESE SOLUTIONS ARE PERFECT, YOU WILL NOTICE STILL SOME GLITCH HERE AND THERE, BUT THE IMPROVEMENT IS EVIDENT AND THEY BECOME EXCEPTIONS, INSTEAD OF BEING THE RULE.
Hope this helps...

awesome, thanks for help.
Ill try these steps and see what i come up with.
But first thing first, my PC wont even recognize my phone anymore. I am getting pretty pissed off now.

Please, better create a new thread for that problem: you'll have the benefit of more visibility about that concrete issue; let this one just for music problems (an organized forum is better for everybody). Thanx!

you are right! thank you.

thanks mrbandwidth. greatly appreciated!

Ok, the problem is partially solved, but as you said there are still some short rattles.
My question is: is there any possibilty that with an update this problem can be adjusted?
Thank you.

Well, as I said this problem seems to happen in other Android devices too, so I suspect we have to blame Android 2.x and its stock music player for this. Maybe it will be solved in Android 4.0 ICS but who knows... And if LG hasn't been capable till now of solving the ghost calls problem I don't think they even care about this.
Anyway the improvement factor with the fixes for me is:
-before: 4-5 glitches on each 5min song -> 60 glitches / hour -> unacceptable!
-now: 2-3 glitches / hour -> acceptable
so, it's a x20 improvement factor. Nice!

I'm running 2.1 rooted, the market app is 2.2 and above, won't show up for me.
u can try manually apply it.
/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/17:1/read_ahead_kb
change the value inside the read_ahead to 2048 or 3072
the italic, im nt sure its 17:1 or 17, something bout 17 im sure. inside got the read ahead
tis method however, change back to default after reboot
I tried the hack. Changed cache size from 128 to 2048. Write speeds stayed the same, but read speeds went up by about 5Mb/s. My SD card is crap tho, only a class 2. I also only tried the one cache size.
How big of a difference is noticeable between class 2 and class 6?........thinkin bout gettin rid of my class 2 16g if it makes a big improvement

Using the app i can set at boot
Sent from my X10i using XDA Premium App
there is no init.d on stock x10, so i set the file "99sdcardreadfix" to "run as root" and "run at boot" with "script manager" (free available at market).
The code working for me:
Code:
#!/system/xbin/sh
if [ -e /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb ]
then
/system/xbin/echo "[COLOR="Red"]3072[/COLOR]" > /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb;
fi
3072 was working best for me with the stock sd card.
read: 3,8
write: 73,4
If another value works better with your sd card, just change the red number to what you need

for 2.2 roms, you need to edit the script because echo is in bin, not xbin
download and use scriptmanager from the market, it will allow the script to run at boot.
works great on my 2.1 and 2.2 roms.
devs are not including this in their roms and no scripts are needed.
Thanks! That really did the trick for me, I am set at 1024 now, read speeds went up slightly between 6-7 mb/s while read speeds are around 25mb/s. I could get higher read speeds at higher cache but my write speeds would go down
thread carefully
Hi
I just wanted to point out that read ahead buffer is not a real SD card performance booster. It is the way how your OS handles card reading and buffering data. I agree that illusion of speedup is present and large data set can really benefit from big read ahead buffer (like video audio and some others).
If you try other SD speed test applications like "Sst" aka "SD Card Speed Test" changing read ahead buffer will not make a dent because software is not using buffers to test real performance.
In some cases big buffer can really degrade performance because OS is cashing something that was not needed.
So my advice is to thread carefully and make read ahead buffer bigger only if you suffer from dropped frames in video or audio players, games and if you use app2sd.
Real performance boost can only obtained with better SD card driver if possible (custom kernel) and better SD card class 6 if possible. (not all SD card's regardless of class will not work in your device as expected eg. Kingston SanDisc Apacer and others research before you buy)

[Q] Music Player that can read off of sdcard in Dock

I'm at a loss. We have the internal 16 or 32gb ...mostly taken up by apps and data and pictures etc... Then we have the removable mico (whatever size) on the side of our beloved tf's ...then the dock. Has the capability of holding a full sd card. Well that is the one I have all my MP3's onto, bc the mico inside the tf was almost at max. But I can't seem to find a music player that will read off of the Dock's storage.
Does any one know of an app that could/does? I'm pretty sure I've tried the vast majority before posting this, but still ...I'm totally up for suggestions. Thanks in advance..
Have you ever tried PowerAMP? I contacted the dev months ago and he replied within 24 h and made changes. It's def. worth buying!

I think hive player does, no guarentees but it was updated with 'transformer support' so i would assume it does now. Its built for tablets. The developer is a friendly person so im sure hell either add support or let you know if it does.
Poweramp as said above does have that support. I personly hate its layout on tablets so i dont ue it. Its an excellent player however, i just think it needs a better tablet interface

Have yet to try hive, and poweramp didnt a while ago but haven't tried recently. Will give those both a shot. Thank you.
Have you tried mixzing? That should work just fine.
So I tried the PowerAMP trial, and whatdya know ...i was able to access the the SD card directory, not just the micro. So that was exciting. But then, I decided to try Hive Lite, no go. I emailed the dev, who swifty responded within an hour. He said that the lite version has the same scanning abilities as the paid, and that I should try a "media refresh" app. So I tried a bunch, and no go. And atm, am trying out Mixzing. It seems I'm able to access the folder, and play the song, but they will not show up on the main "artists, albums" etc ...ah well, time to fork up the cash flow for PowerAMP. Thanks everyone for your help/suggestions. cheers.
I suggest rebooting. Sounds stupid, but it works for me usually. I've had that problem on both the tablet and a phone.
well, thankfully there is that 14day trial period for PowerAMP. Because if I put a decent amount of songs on a playlist, as soon as I scroll down on the playlist...fc. tried fixing permissions, no go. ugh, maybe someday some decent app will do this ha

[Q] Camera / Video no smooth preview / video recording

Hello,
my girlfriend got her new HTC Desire S 2 weeks ago. I have one since it is available in our country. I rooted it and put the same ROM (the newest Galnet from MIUI) on both devices.
The first thing we noticed was the different color saturation of the devices, which is not that big deal (perhaps someone has a solution?).
But a really annoying thing is that on my girlfriends phone the camera app is not able to preview everything like it should. It only updates the screen if some user interaction is done. Touching the screen, ... . If i open the camera app the same thing happens, it even records only 1pic (or less) each second.
I restored the backup but with the original ROM everything is working. Reflashing of MIUI or using another version doesn't solve that problem.
I hope someone has a good hint or a solution for that problem?
Thanks in advance.
Hardware acceleration?!
We also found out that she is not able to watch videos. They look like a slideshow. 1 image a second or less....
It seems that there is a problem with the hardware acceleration?
I did a full wipe (i even formated system / data / cache) so nothing from an old rom can cause this problem.
Are there different chips build into our HTC Desire S. or what can cause these problems?
I hope someone can answer these questions. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Mike
I have same problem discussed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397883
there is no solution for it now ((
Did you had the same problem before you switched the ROM?
I had the problem with slow SD card. Video play was quite smooth but sometimes it was not synced with audio. When I changed SD card to class 10 from class 2 its muuuuch better.

I am pretty sure it's not the sd because youtube videos are lagging too, and they are cached in the RAM (i think). Camera and video preview are also lagging and the preview itself has nothing todo with the sd card too.
But thanks

Clearing Cache

This really just occurred to me, and it's important to keep in mind if you're trying to manage your data usage - and it really only applies to people using Google Play Music frequently and who regularly clear cache either for flashing or for any other reason.
If those things apply to you, every time you play a song for the 1st time post-cache-clearing, your device has to re-cache the song(s).
Let's say on average each song is 4MB in size and is 3 minutes long. If you listen to 3 hours of music a day, that's 240MB of music played each day. Now, if it's already cached then there isn't any problem. But, if you wipe everything, say, 3x a month.. suddenly you have to re-cache all of that after each wipe and you've used 720MB of data just to cache your songs. You can see how this could get out of hand quick for a serial-flasher that listens to a lot of Google Play Music.. you can pretty easily use 1+GB of data without even taking into account other data use (apps, video, email, etc). The potential result of this, of course, is AT&T's cursed (and probably illegal) throttling policy.
Recommendations:
When possible, use WiFi to cache songs. Of course, this isn't possible when driving or in many workplaces, etc. But as everybody knows, WiFi can also be slower than LTE in most cases, which can be undesirable as well.
Please feel free to include your thoughts, Skyrocket specific workarounds, or anything else. And I'm quite certain someone will correct me if I'm talking out of my a$$.

Yea I keep all my music, movies and media on my external sd. Hell I learned that real quick cause I got really tired of moving it to the PC every time I wanted to flash a rom that required a full wipe. Now just pop that external SD out and flash away. Saves a tremendous amount of time. Also store my titanium backup files, roms, mods and various other zip files used for flashing.
Sent from my two cents which ain't worth much.

That would work fine if you have a small library. That's would equate to around 8,000 or so songs on a 32 GB sd card. I'm talking about people with a lot of music here. I know people with 25,000 songs, and I personally have 14,000 in my own music library. It's silly to carry around 2 or 3 sd cards. That's sort of the point of Google Play Music, no? True, all of the songs in that massive library aren't listened to very often, and the vast majority aren't therefore cached to the phone.
I'm not saying this is some critically important issue that the development community needs to address immediately, just making people aware of something that ay not have occurred to them if they're flashing away and wonder why all of a sudden they've used their 2 GB with 2 weeks left in the month.
But yes, for people with a relatively small music collection, an external SD card is the obvious answer.
/\
WOW you guys must be so rich to have all those songs or maybe website gurus lol

OK I've got a bit of a problem here. I have a d2vzw running CM 10.1.3 and run all of my music off of a 64gb sd card formatted for FAT32. It's becoming almost a daily occurrence that for whatever reason, Apollo (or any other music app) fails to immediately recognize that there is music stored on the card. The time it takes for the list to populate ranges from 5 minutes to never, and occasionally includes tagging multiple songs as "Unknown." I've never been able to produce a LOGCAT for this either. Plugging the phone into my computer however, will show all files present in explorer. I'm really starting to get sick of this as I bought the S3 to solve the problem of having to carry both an iPod and a smart phone. Any one know any potential reasons?

I can say that I've used 10.1.2 without any issues. I stopped using Apollo a while ago and switched over to PowerAmp which allows you to choose "select" folders that the player will ONLY scan. This prevents ringtones, downloaded voicemails, etc, from appearing in your library.
Yes poweramp is the way to go... Love it..

Power amp and player pro both allow you to select certain folders, I like the later as its a little less cluttered than power amp in my decision

It could be any number of things. First try another music player, if that doesn't work flash a touchwiz ROM. If that doesn't work either then it either has to be your phone or your card. This happened to me like a month ago in my case it was the phone.

Are you using the sandisk 64gb card? If so that might be the problem. My sandisk card lasted about 8 months before becoming locked (couldn't format, copy or remove files anymore). Within that 8 months my card would randomly become unreadable and would have to be reformatted. The 64gb sd card from samsung has been working great for me. The amazon page for the sandisk card says this "Reformat into file system other than exFAT may cause instability". Anyways you might just have to get another sd card.
