(Q) Error on the Samsung S2 // I give a reward! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi guys,
I followed some steps on xda and I rooted my Samsung S2. The program superuser is running on it and I installed Rom manager.
My cellphone runs the following kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKL1-CL809037
When I reboot my cellphone in recovery mode, then it gives an error when I want to install a rom from SD card:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I don't know what to do or how to fix this. I give a 5$ paypal reward to the one that can help me.
Greetings!

This might help you further:
When I go into recovery it sais something about "3e recovery" and that seems to be wrong...
Any idea's?

You'll need CWM recovery to flash custom roms.
AFAIK you are able to flash it through rom manager or with Odin. With Odin, just find proper custom kernel with CWM recovery. For rom manager, I can't really help, because I'm using SGS which aren't supported in rom manager.

Kurre is correct. Do not use Rom manager to flash a custom recovery to the Galaxy S2. I tried it once on a test build of ICS and was able to boot into CWM once but the next time I tried it booted into the phones stock recovery. It won't always stick. I believe the recovery you are looking at is the phones stock recovery and you cannot flash an unsigned Rom with it. That's why you are getting the error.

Thanks for the responses.
So what should I do exactly? Do I need to change my kernel or should "re-root" my phone again?
Total noob here .
Thx in advance!

What Rom are you running? Unless you flashed a bare Rom only, most of them are packaged up with a kernel and a custom recovery. The short answer is yes, you need a kernel with a CWM based recovery. You'll have to flash it with Odin and make sure you get a version that works with your Rom

Maybe I'm confused and not helping you. What is a Samsung S2? I thought you were talking about a Galaxy S2.

As I said, flash custom kernel with CWM support with Odin. For example this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838 has Odin package (tar). I'm still assuming you are using Samsung Galaxy S2 (gt-i9100)??
But before you flash anything with Odin, I'd suggest reading flashing tutorials..at least couple of times. So you'll know what you are doing and what to do if something goes wrong.

Indeed, it is a Samsung Galaxy S2, sorry for the misunderstanding.
i''l try your tips Kurre, i'll let you know something!

I have the stock recovery on my phone now running ICS while waiting for a new kernel to be released. It says 3e at the top like yours so that is definitely your stock Samsung recovery. You can't flash a new rom with that. Good luck and keeps us posted if you get it worked out. Search for Qbking77 on you tube. He has a video on how to flash with Odin. It's so easy even a caveman can do it.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, bout to go insane

Ok, so i have had a samsung captivate since last summer. I just did the official froyo update the other day and it was successful with kies mini. I then decided to root it using super1click which also worked successfully. I have superuser, titanium backup with busybox installed, and super manager and terminal emulator. I also successfully got clockworkmod flashed and working.
My problem is that ive got the new cognition rom on my internal sd card, but when i try to flash it with cwm, i get the 3e recovery failure message. Ive been reading various sites today on how to fix this problem, but every site seems to tell me something different. I ask this question here, because it seems to be the most knowledgeable site to go to.
How do i get my rooted captivate, with all the above installed and running, to allow me to flash a new rom and possible a new kernal down the road? Im about to go insane trying to decipher through all the info all the different sites have said. Sorry to write such a novel on a tired subject, but im going crazy. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

If you would have done a search here then you would have found that you need to do one of 2 things.
1. Flash back to 2.1
2. Replace the 3e recovery with one that doesnt check for the sig.
I dont know how to replace the 3e recovery. I think ill go with flashing back to 2.1. Once i dl Odin and flash back to 2.1, then i can flash a new rom or a new kernel? Will it undo everything i've done so far? Thanks for the help.

Here is a link to the replacement recovery.
Make sure you have the right odin and that your 3 button works right.
Yesh doing this will wipe out everything. Make sure to back up. Do not back up system data at all as when you restore it, it can lead to major issues. Once done with a custom rom it will be wiped clean. You will have to redo contacts, email, and all other settings
Thanks. Would it be okay to just flash a new kernel like speedmod kernal and just use the stock rom? Is that possible to do while im on rooted 2.2? I like the rom just fine, i just want it faster mainly. Thanks again.

To be honest I am not sure. I only had the stock on for a few hours as it was just not that great compared to the 2.2.1 rom that I have been used to running. I need BT voice dial and the added exchange options so 2.2 was not really for me. If you want a stock feel but faster then I would go with COG or one of the other roms based on the kb1 rom.
So I've come to the conclusion that I should just flash back to 2.1 and go from there. I have odin downloaded, but I'm not certain how to use it. Do you guys think I should flash a custom rom from stock, or just flash a kernel with lag fix and delete the bloatware? Thanks.
first flash 2.1 stock to get rid of the damn 3e. custom roms dont replace that always. also most custom roms dont flash with odin.
get a stock rom. read the instructions, flash

If you are getting .zip signature errors when trying to flash a rom (because you are using 3e recovery) you will not be able to flash a kernel.
Supercurio did make a KB1 kernel that is installable via Odin. If you install that, you will also get CWM recovery. Then you can flash anything you want.
Either way you will need an Odin program. Either Odin One Click to flash back to stock 2.1 or Odin v1.7 to flash the Supercurio KB1 Kernel .tar file.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the speedmod kernal is i9000 based which would cause a major headache/bootloop on the stock rom.

The problem is, the OP has no idea what he's doing. It sounds like he's wanting to flash to 2.1, then add a I9000 kernel. Since he's all over the place, it's hard to decipher what he's thinking.
To the OP. I'd HIGHLY suggest you look for the stickied "how to" video's by Connexxion. They will tell you what you need to do and show you EXACTLY how to do it. Invaluable info for the noobs.
Here is the link your looking for, download the installer zip file at the bottom of the first post. Extract to your fancy, use the install.bat file once extracted. Be sure to have the phone connect to the pc (DO NOT MOUNT) and have USB Debugging on.

ok no need to flash 2.1
get neldars kernel flashing app from the market
get a kernel for froyo without 3e recovery in the dev section. this one is great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=547852&d=1300708475
use neldars app (edit) "sgs kernel flasher" or something to that effect. to flash this kernel
then flash cognition
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and flash the same kernel placed in the pda slot.
when you installed keis mini, it installed new WRONG drivers (for odin)
reinstall the original other drivers.
BUT. in your OP all you wanted was to be able to flash COG or something.
ALL you have to do is fix your 3e recovery, SEVERAL people including myself have told you how to fix it. then CWM will work! you dont need a computer to fix 3e if you have root explorer (google it $) .
if you are going to flash a custom rom anyway dont bother going back to 2.1.
if you are going to stay stock, 2.2 is better anyway. (aside from 3e but staying stock dont matter)
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and the same kernel placed in the pda slot.

well that doesn't make my whole post irrelivent. if he is rooted and has busy box he can use neldars kernel flasher. sorry if i over looked something.
Ok, well i got the aio toolbox, and i flashed back to stock. Now im running 2.1-update1. How do i go about rooting now? I cant seem to find a root file. Thanks.

use Clockwork Recovery. Rom manager does not play well with galaxy s phones. It is covered in tons of threads, and is the reason that kernels come with CWM baked in. the recovery used in samsung phones is not like the recovery used in HTC or Motorola devices. rom manager very rarely works for anything with our phones.
basically, if you use it and it works, good for you. if it doesnt work, dont cry about it because its a known issue.
^^^ I agree Rom Manager stinks with the galaxy s. Cant believe I paid for premium The only thing I use with Rom manager is to fix permissions once in a while. CWM is the way to go IMO.

ODIN is only usable if someone has created a ROM specifically FOR ODIN. ODIN is generally used only for flashing stock roms. a few people have made ODIN versions of their ROMS
CWM is the defacto. the only thing ROM manager does on other phones that it actually works with, is boot you into CWM and run a script that basically just pushes the buttons for you. it is IDENTICAL to just booting into CWM and flashing yourself.
I dont know what you need to manage on ROMs with ROM manager though. its just a GUI to your CWM. you can make backups/restores from CWM directly, and you can flash roms, fix permissions directly from CWM...rename backup jobs through a file manager...i have no need for ROM manager on my galaxy s phones.

[Q] About Rom Manager

Hi guys, after reading the ten commandments for my SGS 4G. i noticed that we shouldn't install a ROM manager and well, you guessed it right, I installed the dreaded rom manager. Fortunately, I havent used it to flash my phone because I cant get to CWM recovery mode. But I have a few questions:
1. I used the rom manager feature to flash CWM. does this affect my phone in any way if i will use the correct way to flash my phone using odin?
2. I tried to reinstall the update.zip in 3e recovery. It failed and I didnt tried it since then. same question with #1 (does this affect my phone in any way if i will use the correct way to flash my phone using odin?)
Lastly, do I need to flash my phone again to stock if i decide to try using a custom rom?
By the way, I have the T-Mobile SGS 4g T959V, 2.2.1 firmware, 2.6.32.9 kernel and KD1 build number.
Thanks in advance... I would really appreciate the help because I want to learn to customize my phone in the right way...

need help with getting cm7 from kk4

Have a friend with the kk4 rom which is 2.3.5 . He wants cm7 but the instructions are vague, when he loads up rom manager it doesn't show captivate mtd but only shows the regular galaxy s i900 . What should I do from here ?
ROM manager really needs to die a horrible death and be erased from public memory.
Flash a custom kk4 kernel with Odin that has cwm built into it. Then flash cm7 from there.
No need to even root the damn thing let alone (attempt to) use crappy ROM manager that doesn't work on galaxy devices running over Android 2.1

You may need to flash CM7 twice - A lot of times, the first flash just sets up the MTD file scenario, giving you the CWM you need. The second flash should finish installing it.
Yank battery and replace...hold Vol up Vol down and power til you see the boot screen and let go.
The button combos should work.
got it to work now just trying to load the gapps which seems to not be installing and for some reason it won't recognize the gapps arg this is the weirdest thing.
Just to clarify, if I'm on stock KK4 I can just flash a KK4 ROM with CWM and then CM7? I don't need to be on Froyo, as the CM wiki says?

What is the filename of the zip you are trying to install for gapps?
When you say it isn't installing, does it say it completed and nothing happens, or is it failing? If it's failing, does it give you an error?

Forgive me if you already know this, but it only installs apps that can't be downloaded from the market. If you have the market, it worked and you just have to download the rest of them. If you don't have the market, it definitely didn't work and, short of flashing back to stock and trying again, I don't have any other suggestions to troubleshoot it, unfortunately.

[Q] Signature Verification

Hello folks I have the US Verizon version of the Galaxy S III and when I try to install a rom from either Rom Toolbox or Rom Mananger I get sent to the recovery screen. Once I navigate to the selected rom I set a Signature Verification error and the little Android fella drops. What can I do to fix this. Not all roms act this way but this Miui rom doesn't seem to install. As a matter of fact, any rom I install via the recovery acts this way.
Please help. Thank you.
What recovery are you using? Instead of Rom manager use ez recovery and flash either cwm or TWRP and then flash the rom. Check the md5 of the rom to make sure it matches. I also think there is a setting in a custom recovery for signature verification
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
You cant flash roms from stock recovery...you need cwm or twrp recovery.
Being that I'm a newbie with this particular phone, I need help in terms of the method you guys are suggesting. I either use Rom Manager or Rom toolbox for flashing but was only successful with Rom Manager for at least two roms but were unstable. Please get back to me on steps on how to get around the Signature Verification where the little Android falls with a red error message.
Thanks.
Thank you for all the advice. I just installed Goo Manager which works with TWRP. I hope it works. I'll update as soon as possible.
