Windows Tablet with GSM Support? - General Questions and Answers

Hello
I am desperately trying to find a tablet that runs on Windows XP or above that will allow me to insert my sim card and use 3G for online purposes when there is no wifi but will also allow me to make normal GSM calls through a bluetooth headset.
I visit clients and would like to de-clutter into ONE all singing device (plus the headset) that can do everything I need.
Needs to have minimum 1GB ram and screen resolution of 1024 x 768 to accommodate the software I use.
Does anyone know of something that will do all the above with or without modification?

BUMP
Any ideas guys or is it impossible?

What you want is a netbook. Forget using any current gen tablet for this. They would be like trying to take down a rhino with a bb gun.

A 13" 3G netbook or Ultrabook would be more than happy to perform the tasks you require. But remember if you get a Netbook, don't leave the store without buying a 4GB RAM module, as most of them only come with 1GB.

Slap on the wrists duly taken mod!
Update: The closest product I have come across to what I'm after is the Gigabyte S1080 Slate Tablet.
(can't post url link as newbee - check it out by searching)
It ticked all the right boxes including voice calling using 3G with a SIM card slot.
The screen resolution just let me down though, I needed 1024 x 768 minimum for the software requirements. Arggghhh - so close.
Any other ideas people?

What has the world come to?

I just got done reading a PM from someone who bought a used phone. And guess what they had on it, My Vanilla ROM.
Guys if you are going to sell your phones, please flash them back to factory. I dont think its smart to sell it with my rom or any other bleeding edge rom. These releases are still considered to be testing.
I understand your concerns and I agree...but I think that if we (as a community) are sharing ROM's...this is one of those things that is going to happen and we'll have to live with ya know...
agree with j3d1n4s7y (pain to copy out!lol)
and i agree with you nottoosmart.
if the seller didnt make it a selling point then, it shouldnt matter. but if the seller was saying 'oooo loooky here, wm6-rare!!!!!!buy me!' then the seller frankly is an idiot!
"What is the world coming to?" ?
Frankly, I don't see what the issue is. As long as the seller clearly indicates that the phone is running a third-party ROM, such as mUn's, then what's the problem? Undeniably, the person ought mention such information, but that's just an issue falling under the category of normal auction and commerce etiquette (i.e., that one should always disclose any major modifications made to a device).
Most people would be happy to get a phone pre-installed with mUn's ROM (regardless of what it's re-branded as). The functionality and stability of the mUn WM6 ROM you speak of are real and significant improvements over the OEM's ROMs.
This thread seems little more than public boasting.
cheers.

I know... If I wasn't worrying about M$ getting up my ass, I'd sell your rom at a lower price than that guy and we can split the profits...
Selling cooked roms
OK, I guess I have to disagree with a lot of you folks here. I think it is a bad idea to sell cooked roms. The problem is with people who are new to pocket pc's and to WM5 and WM6. If you will remember, there is a learning curve to these devices, and the extra complexity of many cooked roms adds to the confusion. Also, where are they going to get help for their questions about WM6? or where do they turn to when their comm manager screen doesn't look like the one in the picture? Is the seller going to offer support? Likely not, probably they will refer them to this forum and they will end up PMing the rom chef indignantly, expecting their help.
Leave the stock rom in place. If you want to unlock the device, fine, but put it back the way you found it. That way the people who buy them know where to turn for support. (Microsoft, or the carrier).
Regards,
Make it Factory!
Heck even if you update to the original carriers latest rom, thats fine. You are doing the next guy a favor. But just think of it this way.
If you DONT flash it back to a factory rom, can you really be sure that you have removed all your personal info from the device?
Ever hear about the 100's of HDs that are bought and sold on ebay without being security wipped? Phone numbers, B-Days, eww its ripe for the identity thief.
If you have taken the time to unlock it and play with it, have the common courtesy to put it back to a carrier supported format.
btw Great rom there NTS

Ok, let me state the issue with this......
I got 3 PM's through the forum about support of this. I know this sounds like me coping out on support, but I am not about to support someone who does not know anything or has not spent the time reading the posts here. Most of the PM's I get are from people who have done the research here and not just saying "BTW I bought a device with your ROM on it, can you help me do this or that"

I totally agree with this. Its very similar to the people that are seeing posts in PC Mag, and other places about WM6 roms for the wizard can be found here. They come here and start flashing before they even know what they are doing then start demanding (and yes I mean demanding) people to fix their phone they have now screwed up (I get numerous PM's from people that want me to be their personal support center and tell them step by step how to do things. Most of those PMs get deleted or I will point them to one of the how to threads and not answer further PMs from them. I'll continue to assist people that post in the forums, but am starting to ignore ones that its pretty obvious they haven't even tried looking before asking. I love the ones that ask for where to download a rom, and just a couple of posts above theirs is a link someone posted.

Which tablet I can buy for phone calls ?

I am looking for a tablet where I can make and receive standard phone calls.
No Google IP, no other apps, just the standard Android dialer like any phone.
Is there anything out there ?

Anybody has an idea about tablets and phone service ?
Hi valv507,
If you want to make phone calls on a tablet, more commonly known ones include the original Galaxy Tab and the Dell Streak (the 5 inch one, NOT the Dell Streak 7), but.
You can get the Verizon Galaxy Tab for $300 from Amazon now because of Black Friday so better get it soon if you want one!
The Dell Streak will set you back for at least $400 though, but that's on Amazon. It would be cheaper if you bought it with a contract somewhere else.
Edit: Just realised you used T-Mobile. You can purchase one for $150 with a contract on their website. Calls cannot be directly made, but some modifications need to be made

Hope I helped.
Any other suggestions on phone tablets ?
I believe HTC Flyer can make phone calls too, and there's Galaxy Tab 7 Plus
personally I'd wait for Galaxy Tab 7.7, or Asus Padfone if uniqueness is a matter to you
Just the Viewsonic Viewpad 7, that one runs on Android 2.2 and you can insert a SIM-card, so you can make phone calls. Really fun to see, someone calling with a tablet 7"
I think the htc flyer also requires some tweaking to get the calling functonality in America

yeah , sorry for my bad english too , i don't understand your 3rd question
1. i didn't paly Dead Space , so i don't know , but i do have some 3D games which is running fine.
2. i think so , for year 2012 you can count on it , at least there will be some final stable ROM and Kernel left. , anyway , phones are upgrading very fast ...
3. don't understand it...
the nexus s is a good buy, especially with some carriers offering it for free, so if you are getting it subsidized it's likely the best deal for the dollar. It still has at least another good year of developer support for it as well, maybe a little longer. However if you are buying unsubsidized I'd look at the galaxy nexus or even the galaxy note instead.
The nexus is still a solid phone to have, I wouldn't use my upgrade on it, though, of course
I recently purchased my i9023 in December 2011. I had a HTC Desire, this is a good phone but only has 384MB of RAM for the OS, cache and Apps.
The Nexus S's CPU isn't much faster but it has 512MB for the OS, 512MB for cache, 1MB for Apps, and 14MB of 'sdcard' storage onboard. This will enable the Nexus S to run future upgrades for quite a long time as devs will keep supporting it!
Also even a rooted pure google phone will always get official updates since devs will jump on it!

First Time Smartphone user

Hi
Are there a list of things that a first time smartphone user should know. i am asking this cause i have never used a smartphone ever in my life. in fact i have never spent more than 50 dollars on a phone.
so please if you could please give me a headstart on what a smartphone noob should know
Well, first thing is what device now graces your eyes and hands? Second thing would be to read a little bit about your device.
Not saying that you will want to jump straight in and ROOT your phone but there is tons of information that might help you like what case or maybe different apps that help with battery life.

Do your research on each phone your looking into. Get to know your phone before trying to do any ROM/Kernel changes. Also be sure to research and do your homework before attempting any changes at risk of damaging the phone.
Be sure to know what you want in a smart phone as they can be very expensive, play with one at local best buy / see videos / reviews before you purchase. Depending on your carrier know if your looking for a 4G phone that you know it is a 4G phone. Research the specs, hardware, software. There isn't much flagship advice one can give you about using your phone that you cannot find out by just playing with the phone and seeing whether you enjoy it. Just know there is tons to do and with time you will easily learn the OS/Phone you enjoy.
Best advice is: Research and know what device you want before getting it, save money if you don't like it & play with one to learn / see if you enjoy that OS or phone.
I am using the HTC one x
Your best bet would be to do your research. Read, read and read some more. Learn what your device can and can not do. Most things you will not have to worry about depending on your needs.

Most people use smartphones as a portable entertainment platform.... so learn how to download music, videos and games to your device and enjoy it
Learn power management , these phones can use a lot of power if you do not control it, when i got my first smart phone the battery would die in 8 or so hours, now i can get a day an half out of it maybe two without recharging it...
Example set your screen brightness down to50 % or less, email retreival to once a day and then check it manually. put a data off short cut on your main screen , turn it on/off as needed...

You are using a Smartphone for the first time and you had never used phone above $50. So I will not make you confuse by giving a list of Smartphones. I have choosen a Samartphone with every great feature and choosen as seeing you as a first time Smartphone user. Today most popular Smartphones are Android devices so you should by an Android Smartphone and you will have to spend at least $300. You need a phone with good camera, good music Input and Output quality and a touchscreen with a good touch response. So my suggestion is you can buy HTC Wildfire S its cost is about $300 maybe below $300. It has a 5 Megapixel camera with LED Flash, 3.2 Inch Capacitive touchscreen,3G, WiFi, GPS, HTC Sesnse User Interface 2.1, 512 MB ROM, 512 MB RAM, Android 2.3 and it has every feature that you think about a good Smartphone.
HTC one X is a brilliant phone. Read this

That should be a good start.

[Q] Decent ARMV7 device for £130

EDIT:: Sorry for the misleading title, I just used ARMV7 to separate phones which would be useless to me, as they are generally unsupported by many applications, although ARMV7 is not a specific requirement to me.
EDIT2:: The price range has been updated to £150 max.
Hi I'm new to the forums, but I wanted to know if you guys could help me out.
I'm looking to purchase a decent device (at least 1ghz processor, decent RAM, preferably at least 4inch screen) for under £130.
It can be in used condition, this frees up the criteria also.
So far I've checked out the Nexus S (£120-150 used) the Galaxy S (£90-110) and the Desire HD (£100-120), but I'm having trouble finding out which is the best choice.
The phone should also have an active community so I can install the latest CM or stable ROM, and be viably supported in future. Also I would like to know which phones are the most easy to port to, modify, etc. Along with any other important aspects I should take into consideration.
Looking for suggestions, please!
TL;DR: Need good device for under £130 used, active community, long-term, other important factors.
Thank you very much!
Please use the sticky in this section for all phone decision questions, thanks. Thread closed.
